“Gayby” is yet another portmanteau word (one that combines two words into one) of the words “gay” and “baby” and refers to the little tykes that are adopted or conceived by a gay, lesbian or LGBT couple.

While this word might not yet have caught on in wider circles, there are already “gaybys” being featured on primetime television, as on the ABC sitcom, “Modern Family“.

Ex: “Chuck… Larry!  Your little Fuschia is just the cutest little gayby I have ever seen!”

Este truco realmente no es de muy utilidad, pero es un truco que quien sabe si puedas necesitarlo un día.

En cualquier version de Messenger al tratar de poner como apodo o nickname nada, este no nos lo permitira.

Pero si mantenemos presionado  ” Alt ” mientras tecleas 0160 y sueltas “Alt” se creara un espacio blanco que este si nos permitira poner como nickname.

Creo que uno de los temas de los que más se ha hablado en ChilenoMac es de Adium. Doy por hecho que es la aplicación de mensajería instantánea que casi todo el mundo maquero usa, y nosotros los switcher hemos tenido que acostumbrarnos a vivir sin Windows Live Messenger y Messenger Plus! (a decir verdad, la única cosa que extraño realmente de mis días peceros) y reemplazarlo por soluciones como Adium, que no es malo… pero no es lo mismo. Más para uno, que es un poco adicto a chatear y tiene contactos que usan iconos personalizados y nicknames de Plus que en otros clientes de mensajería se convierten en un calvario para entenderlos. Por todas estas razones es que hoy volveré a hablarles de Adium.

Resulta que hace poco fue lanzado en el sitio de Xtras de Adium un plug-in que ha venido a recordarnos en parte lo que hacíamos en Windows con WLM + MP!. Este plug-un se llama MSN Plus Adium, y lo pueden descargar desde acá de manera gratuita. Está en su versión 0.8, fue desarrollado por Tiziano Carotti, y promete dos cosas muy interesantes: filtrado de los códigos de color de Messenger Plus! para no ver sólo símbolos, y capacidad para agregar y enviar iconos personalizados a nuestros contactos. No podía quedarme indiferente con tanta maravilla, así que me dispuse a probar el plug-in para mostrarlo a todos. Acá vamos.

Lo primero es tener la última versión de Adium (hasta hoy, la 1.3.8) que pueden bajar acá. Una vez que han descargado el plug-in, tienen que instalarlo haciendo doble clic sobre él. Se les pedirá que reinicien Aduim, así que ciérrenlo con la combinación ⌘ + Q y vuélvanlo a abrir. Saldrá una pequeña ventana preguntándoles si desean activar el plug-in, que obviamente tienen que responder afirmativamente. Adium se abrirá como de costumbre, y podrán ver la ventana de contactos así:

Lo primero que saltó a mi vista fue que no hay más códigos de color: todos los contactos que ven acá ocupan Messenger Plus! y sus nicknames eran incomprensibles; ahora los puedo leer bien… pero no veo ningún color. Claro, el plug-in prometió filtrar los códigos de color, pero no mostrarlos como colores. Me hubiese gustado verlos, pero no se le puede pedir tanto a la vida. Una cosa que me gustó es que filtra los códigos a todo nivel: en las ventana de contactos y de conversación, en las notificaciones de Growl y en los avisos del Dock:

Estas ventanitas antes no eran de mucha ayuda en los largos códigos, y ahora puedo ver quién me habla o se conecta. El trabajo con los códigos de color está bien hecho, aunque espero que el desarrollador avance en el proyecto y añada los colores al plug-in, para dejarlo casi perfecto.

La otra promesa era la de agregar iconos personalizados; hasta ahora sólo podíamos ver los que nuestros contactos nos enviaban, sin posibilidad de copiarlos. Inicien una conversación con cualquier contacto y esperen a que les envíe algún icono que les interese agregar. Hagan clic derecho sobre el icono, y busquen lo siguiente en el menú:

Hagan clic allí, y aparecerá una pequeña ventana para que elijan el atajo del teclado que usarán para invocar el icono personalizado que están agregando:

Una vez agregado, ya está todo listo para que ocupen su icono nuevo. Sólo escriban el atajo tal como lo agregaron, y al presionar retorno se enviará al contacto con el que conversen en forma de icono. Esta promesa del plug-in funciona a plenitud de capacidades, y en lo personal me alegra mucho poder volver a usar iconos personalizados… no ocupo muchos, pero me gusta tenerlos a mano.

Es importante añadir que pueden administrar sus iconos agregados, yendo al menú ‘editar‘ de Adium, y buscar ‘insert custom emoticon‘ para allí abrir el submenú ‘open custom emoticons panel‘. Se abrirá la siguiente ventana:

Acá podrán ver qué iconos tienen, qué atajos del teclado les asignaron, y podrán borrarlos a voluntad. También pueden crear sus propios iconos agregando imágenes desde el Mac (haciendo clic en el botón + de la esquina inferior izquierda). Si manejan muchos iconos y no siempre los recuerdan todos, esta ventana les viene bien.

Bueno, esta ha sido la re-revisión de nuestro querido Adium enchulado con nuevas características a lo WLM + MP!. Fuera del detalle de la traducción de códigos sin colores, me parece que con esto Adium cobra nuevas fuerzas y se vuelve una opción más que interesante para chatear en Mac OS X frente a otras soluciones… cuando le den soporte para videoconferencias, será perfecto. Espero que la revisión les sirva, y que se decidan a probar Adium los que aún no lo han hecho.

Yesterday I was riding in a car with my friends Ty and Chris. Everyone knows Ty and has called him Tito since high school. One time his dad f*cked up and called him T-Bone. Luckily it never stuck. In college, Ty proclaimed himself as the Spoon and then eventually the Mayor. This came after he Youtubed three hours of old McDonald’s commercials featuring Mayor McCheese. He loved it. These days, I call him Ty D but he prefers T. Jackson or The Hate F*ck (it was his facebook name until it was censored) or The Ol’ Boy. Whatever you call him, he is a lovely and fair skinned gentleman.

Chris, who was also in the car, was once known as Dolph Lundgren after his uncanny resemblance to the Siberian Bull from the movie Rocky IV. Recently and unknowingly he was nicknamed Carrots by my wife, J-Dubs. J-Dubs has been called Wooten or Hot Pants and J Maz.  She has a myriad of friends like Skirt Steak and Droopy Nipple. Droopy Nipple used to work at Applebee’s where she rated highest in customer satisfaction. Apparently, her tips reflected her performance and she became known as Boosty Tipple or BT for short which evolved into Burny Tits and then Swink.

My other friend is Sizzle Bok who dressed as a Mexican named Johnny Gomez for a costume party. My brother is Milhouse, Milkill, Milshoe, Shoe, Shoehouse, Millie and, from a misspelling on his high school letter jacket, Millhouse.  I know Jim Jam and Rik.  I have a friend Jake the Snake.  One named J. Pa. and Blum (sounds like bloom).  Blum hangs out with Nelson and Steve B.  Gary is one.  Teens is another.  Goldy, Chesty and Slitty Wrists.  S Mas and his son, X Mas.  J Leezy for sheezy.  Drary.  The Boss, Champ or Curty.  Petey and Wheels and Lamby Poo.  Jay Nev. Teddy Po.  I saw J.R. Swish on TV.  Oh, and for me…they call me Wolsamnoraa (not really, though) which is part Russian and, as I found out today from my mother and her husband, Papa Paul, part French which translates as Special Boy.  And that’s all I can think of right now.  Did I miss one?  Fill me in.

This is where I got the name McStainy. My dry cleaner, Mr. Wong, is such a goof.

four days and three nights

Today was my third day in Albuquerque.  Save that first lunch on the way home from the airport, I’ve only been out of the house once, to take a 20 minute walk with my mom in the nearby canyon.  Well, they call it a canyon, but it’s more of a wide dip of open space between a housing development and her neighborhood.  Other than that, I’ve only left the computer for naps, the bathroom, and to eat… though I’ve been eating at my machine a lot.

This sordid tale ends tomorrow.  Whether it’s done or not, I’ll be through with this project, this documentation, this employer, this seven year chapter of my life.  I’ll definitely miss some of my coworkers, but I don’t need the job to stay connected with them.  I’d rather kick it when I’m relaxed, not venting about dumb work shit.

Auf “Fluch der Republik” hat die Forschungstorte sich mit Namen und Nicknames beschäftigt und kurz angedeutet, inwiefern das Internet und seine freie Namensgebung sich auf die Gesellschaft und auch die Politik auswirken könnte. Sie sieht darin viele Chancen und einigen (Er)Klärungsbedarf. Ihr Beitrag ist alles andere als erschöpfend, regt aber zum Weiterdenken an. Spannendes Thema, über das ich bisher noch nicht viel nachgedacht habe.

Insofern absolut lesenswert.

Along with the rest of the world, I am on Facebook. I first joined Facebook because a family member asked me to. At first it seemed okay. Another way to keep in touch with family and friends. Some of my family began asking me to join them in using certain applications on there. The first time I accepted  I was puzzled as to why the application needed not only all  of my details in order to work, but also requested that I  include a certain amount of my family/friends details as well. Why? Why does an application, whether it be a game or anything else on Facebook NEED all of your details and those of your friends before it will work?

If I download a game to my computer to play, it doesn’t need to know my life history before it allows me to download and play it? And more importantly, what do these applications do with all of the supplied data that they insist that they need?

You could of course argue that they need all that data in order to spread themselves around Facebook (sounds like a virus doesn’t it?) thereby ending up being used by more people. I would argue that if your application or game is good enough, then your users would tell their family and friends about it anyway. What’s wrong with simply relying on ‘word of mouth’ to increase your usage?

Then following the build up on Facebook of these applications such as games and the like, we are all now inundated with  the downright annoying ‘nags’ about them in our feeds.  Despite posting to my feed countless times that I am NOT interested in joining ‘Farmhouse Families’ or ‘Mafia shoot up’ or anything else for that matter, I still get pestered to join this or that. So I block that particular application. Problem solved? NO! Because no sooner do you block one application than along comes another one in its wake! Grrr! There must be one new application born every few minutes on Facebook, or that’s how it seems to me!  I can’t keep up with the blocking and hiding!

 There are other niggles I have with Facebook. How you can’t use your nickname for example or the fact that it doesn’t use RSS feeds so that I can check any updates in my desktop email program.

I would close my account on there in a jiffy but most of my family also use Facebook  regularly and I also have some long term friends from Live Journal on there as well. Hmm. Think I might have to do some serious culling of contacts on there especially those who are always nagging me to join this or join that.

On October 16 1869 the ‘remains’ of a ten-foot tall giant were discovered on the property of William C Newell. Workmen, digging a well behind Newell’s barn, in Cardiff, New York, made the discovery. News of this incredible find soon spread and thousands of people literally queued to view the ‘giant’. Newell started charging 50 cents a head admission to view, and they still kept coming. Speculation grew as to who or what the giant could be. Some believed that it was the petrified remains of a giant man, one of those mentioned in the book of Genesis in the bible. Others thought it was a stone statue from ancient times. Of course, it was neither of these; it was in fact what has been called the greatest hoax of all time. The hoax was the brainchild of George Hull, a tobacconist from New York. Hull had concocted the scheme after an argument with a minister over a passage of the bible (Genesis 6:4) stating giants once roamed the earth. The minister thought the passage should be taken literally, Hull disagreed. He then thought of creating a man from stone and passing it off as the real thing. As well as poking fun at religious types it would also enable him to make some money. Newell and the stonecutters who carved it were also in on the hoax. Costing Hull some $2,600 (£1,592) to make, he more than recouped his money when a group of businessmen got together and paid $37,500 (£22,968) to buy the giant before moving it to Syracuse for it to be exhibited. It was and was soon exposed as a fake when a prominent paleontologist examined it and pointed out that chisel marks could still be seen on it and that it was an obvious fake. Realising the game was up, Hull confessed. However the truth did little to damage the giant’s reputation as people still flocked to see it, rechristening it with the nickname ‘Old Hoaxey’. Well-known showman P.T. Barnum stepped in. He’d heard of the giant’s popularity and offered the businessmen $60,000 (£36,753) to lease it from them for 12 weeks. When they refused Barnum hired men to construct an exact copy of it. He then placed the copy in his museum in New York, where it was soon drawing larger crowds than the original. Today both the original and the replica are still on display at the Farmer’s Museum (Cooperstown New York) and Marvin’s Marvellous Mechanical Museum (Detroit) respectively, where they still attract hundreds of visitors a year. Today’s Afternoon Inquisitor question on Skepchick today was about nicknames and how you got your nickname.  This made me realise  that I don’t have a nickname. My name Meg is already the shorten version of my legal name and besides the horrible Megsy, which I won’t tolerate anyone calling me, there is not much one can do to Meg.  Also I haven’t done anything, embarrassing or otherwise, to earn myself a non-name related nickname.

Is there anyone else out there as boring as I am who doesn’t have a nickname or do the rest of you live such exciting lives that you have not only one nickname but a whole host of them??

A Saudi woman filed for divorce after discovering by chance that her husband gave her name “Guantanamo” on his mobile phone, reports newspaper al-Watan.

The newspaper said the woman, aged 30 and living in the city of Jeddah, saw this after her husband left the phone at home.

The furious wife filed for divorce, arguing that by assigning such a nickname, the husband saw her as a tyrannical person and she could no longer continue to live with him after 17 years of marriage

Hands of the Ripper (1971)

 

Hands of the Ripper is a 1971 British horror film directed by Peter Sasdy for Hammer Film Productions.

It is set in London in Victorian times, and stars Angharad Rees as Anna, a vulnerable young woman who is exploited by her guardian (Dora Bryan), a medium, and haunted by the subconscious memory of her mother’s murder by her father – Jack the Ripper. She is taken in by a Freudian psychiatrist (Eric Porter), who is determined to find out the cause of her by-now-murderous impulses.

I’ve been back in Aus for a few days now, but it’s been hard to wrap my head around the fact, and I’m still figuring some stuff out. So I thought I’d get back into the swing of things with a story about another nickname I’ve accrued. Kirabo (pronounced: Chirah-bow).

I’ve been in Uganda for the past three weeks and at the moment you can read (most of) what happened on here. But  there’s a story I want to tell you about my new name. And it’s not on there. See, on my last day at work before I went away, my boss gave me a few warnings. He told me I’d better not get eaten by lions, warned me that afros probably won’t suit me, and that I’d better write my “tribal name” down when I came back, so he’d know how to pronounce it. Well, I only saw one lion (a lioness to be precise) and there was no way that she wanted to eat me. Nobody in Uganda has a ‘fro, if you don’t have a shaven dome, you most likely have those small tight plait-type braids, and I didn’t get those done to me. And the name. While we were having breakfast on a Tuesday on the last week (in Gulu, Northern Uganda at the time) I asked our guide Bonny if he could give me an African name, so that I could tell my boss when I got back. He called me Kirabo, it means gift. The other team members who were with me also were given names (although two of them already had names from last year) and I cannot spell them, so I’m not going to try, but they meant Boss, Grandfather, Peace and Comedian. Very suitable we all thought.

So that is how I earned another nickname. Kind of cheating, asking for one, but… well, who could resist?

I will be getting some photos up here soon (hopefully) but with over 2500 to sort through, it will take me a while. And they are just my photographs, wait until I get a copy of everyone else’s!!
