Cuando se viaja suele ser para constatar que lo que imaginamos merece existir. Para que no exista la lógica decepción al llegar a nuestros desconocidos destinos favoritos, preparamos durante cierto tiempo nuestra mítica de rutas y visitas, y ahí es donde el verdadero viaje empieza. Después sólo hay que tomar un vehículo locomotor cualquiera, y viajar para constatar qué pizca de verdad hay en todo aquello que hemos imaginado.

El Chelsea Hotel es esa mítica elevada al cubo. Mencionado en la obra de muchos artistas, y visitado después por artistas que querían conocer a esos otros artistas que lo cantaban, y sabían que el Chelsea a esas alturas no era un mal sitio para hacerlo.

Allí debieron estar también, pues, cientos de wannabes haciendo lo mejor y lo peor para estar en primera plana del mundo cool de la bohemia, o al menos del prometido desenfreno orgiástico, o al menos, lo mínimo, de los escándalos relacionados con la droga. Todo ello añadido a que la caja que contiene al Chelsea es la mismísima caja mítica de Manhattan, que además está dentro de la caja mítica de Nueva York. Y ahí tenemos al Chelsea metido en el imposible fregado de ofrecer correspondencia entre deseo y realidad al viajero.

La realidad, entonces, puede pasar por que el Chelsea sea un sitio agradable, que aprovecha bien su pasado para atraer a unos cuantos curiosos por ésta ruta poco frecuentada en los paseos turísticos que atraviesan la Gran Manzana. Medias frases con un simpático recepcionista, dar una vuelta por el legendario hall… se hace difícil imaginar que realmente ocurrió allí todo aquello que cuentan las crónicas. Principalmente porque lo que ocurrió (dicen) allí es lo mismo que está ocurriendo en cualquier lugar del mundo en éste mismo momento. Y eso debería ser todo.

¿Le quita ésto encanto a la visita? ni un ápice. Por eso éste artículo se escribe en ese mismo hotel, y pasa a formar parte de esa otra mítica, la que se pretende desmitificadora de cualquier lugar o hecho. Poner un pie en el hall del Chelsea da significado a la imposibilidad de desmitificar nuestros deseos, por muy estúpidos que sean. La razón es simple: los necesitamos, para que el Chelsea no sea un hotel más. O para que nuestra vida merezca desarrollarse en esa habitación en la que nuestros muebles encajan como una semilla en la tierra húmeda.

We call ourselves creeptones. We have been waiting for some time now to play and perform live. That time is still a ways away. Working on a large collection of songs. Will perform a long run of local summer shows. Will be exciting to play shows after a band has rehearsed and essentially, been a band already for two years. All the songs will be free. With kids answering to names like Riley and Madison, it might be hard to see why Cohen courts controversy.

Except.

As Nameberry’s Pamela Redmond Satran wrote in her Daily Beast article last May, Cohen isn’t just any surname.  It’s from the Hebrew kohen – priest.  That’s more than an etymology.  The Kohanim are considered direct descendants of Aaron, big brother to Moses and first High Priest of the Israelites.  For generations, the Kohanim performed specific duties and formed  a priestly class within Judaism.  Even today, you’ll find communities where the Kohanim observe specific rules and receive certain privileges in return.  Lest you think that’s just an old tradition, it turns out that genetic testing bears out the idea that the Kohanim share a common ancestry.

Not every Kohanim is a Cohen and not every Cohen is a priest.  Names like Kaplan, Conklin, Kahn, Coen, Kogan, Cahen and Caen have all been used as equivalents.  George M. Cohan was Irish Catholic.  Koen is a diminutive for the Dutch and German equivalents of Conrad.  It’s perfectly possible to argue that your boy Cohen has nuthin’ to do with the Torah.

Plenty of parents do.  In 2004, Cohen entered the US Top 1000 at #650.  By 2008, he stood at #356 – a quick climb.  (Though even at #356, fewer than 1,000 newborns received the name.)  Koen ranked #877 is 2008.

If you’re flipping through the phone book to find a baby name, Cohen seems like a logical companion to Carter, Carson and Cooper, as well as names like Colton and Cody.  And, of course, all of those names and more are sometimes subject to respelling with a K.  (I’m guessing that very few of the 238 Koens born last year are wearing the name as a nod to their German or Dutch heritage.)

Factor in our continued preference for two-syllable, ends-in-n names for boys, and Cohen was almost sure to surface.  The Cohen family – including Adam Brody’s appealing character Seth Cohen – on TV’s The O.C. fueled his rise.

To complicate matters, plenty of popular choices are heavy with religious symbolism.  Keeping company with Cohen in the US Top 1000 are:

• Nevaeh (#34) and Heaven (#275), both for girls;
• Trinity (#70 for girls), Genesis (#95 for girls) and Messiah (#704) for boys;
• Zion (#699 for girls and #233 for boys).

That’s without considering virtue names, saints’ names and names culled from obscure Biblical figures.  You could argue that calling your kid Messiah is a heavier burden than the possibly-priestly Cohen.

But why bother?  If Cohen appeals, surely you could choose Colton or Nico or Colby or Kohl.  (I’m a big fan of Crosby myself.)

Odds are that parents picking Cohen mean no disrespect by choosing the name.  Some probably like the idea that their son’s name carries a religious connotation.

Assuming you’re reading this before signing Cohen on your child’s birth certificate in permanent marker, think twice.  It seems unfair to your child to saddle him with a name that – rightly or not – will be viewed by some as an insult.

Dear Blog,

Believe it or not (I certainly don’t), my time in Costa Rica is up. I have my bus ticket that will leave at 5:30 in the morning tomorrow, taking me from Tamarindo to the airport in Alajuela. I won’t get home until around 11:00 pm tomorrow (if I am lucky), so I have a full day of travel in front of me, without a doubt — and that is only with the help of my two wonderful parents coming to pick me up from DIA (hopefully bringing with them a sweater).

I think the snow that will be on the ground is the least of my concerns with coming back home. I’m going have to see how the broad culture shock effects me. It might strike in strange ways. For instance, I was thinking the other day about dishwashers and my thought was, ‘Wait — machines exist that wash all of your dirty dishes for you? And everyone in the United States has one?’ If something as mundane as dishwashers can blow my mind, I don’t know what else will be in store for me.

Overall, though, I am looking forward to it. The thought of being back in my home with my family and friends warms me up inside (unnecessary given the current temperature in Tamarindo). But what really warms me up inside is the thought of a little Chipotle burrito in my stomach…

Sorry — I was briefly distracted there. I suppose there is a part of me that feels like I need to make this blog somehow more epic and comprehensive than the standard fare. After all, it is my last blog from this corner of the globe. But, the truth is that I would be better off spending my last hours here saying goodbye to the beach, rather than writing about it. All of you can expect a more conclusive blog about my experiences soon (though my next few weeks will certainly be busy ones, they will also give me a chance to take a step back from my experiences here and put them in perspective).

Brief update of what I have been up to:

I went surfing again, by myself this time, and while the waves definitely spent more time riding me than the other way around, it was a lot of fun and definitely something I will try again the next time  I have a chance.

Adrianna gave me a really amazing first yoga lesson. I’m not ready to say that I am a believer just yet, but my eyes were opened by an experience that challenged me both physically and spiritually.

Mostly, I have just been taking it easy here. There’s been lots of time on the beach, either walking, swimming or reading. I have been taking in some culture, eating at various restuarants and speaking with various people. I went to watch the Broncos game on Monday night in a sports bar and a man brought a gigantic, beautiful parrot into the bar with him. He ended up joining Michele and I at our table and was quite the character. I also ran into a new species of monkey last week, around town. I have also been pleasantly surprised by the reaction of people who I have spoken with in Spanish, many of whom have complimented my ability to speak more than I think that I deserve.

Overall, it has been a darn good last two weeks to a darn good little adventure. Like I said before, I will need some time to put everything in perspective, but I am sure that when all is said and done and I look back on my time in Costa Rica, I will have no regrets.

Now I’m off to swim in the Pacific one last time…

Q. Are you treating this as your last race for Williams?

Nico Rosberg: It is my last race for Williams. And that is it really. It is a bit strange because for four or five years it is the only team I have worked with, so it has been a long time. I get on with everybody really well, obviously, and a lot of respect has built up – with the mechanics and everyone. So it will be quite strange to leave.

I can also use this opportunity to thank the team, because all in all I think they have done, for my career, a lot of good. Especially Sir Frank [Williams], Adam Parr, Sam Michael and Patrick [Head], they supported my career all these years. So it is a big thank you to them.

Q.So is your future settled then?

NR: I don’t want to talk about my future. I just want to say that I won’t be at Williams, because that is for sure.

Q. Do you know where you will be?

NR: I don’t want to say.

Q. Looking at your season this year, if you had to give yourself a grade of 1-100 on your performance, what grade would you give yourself?

NR: 101! Is that on the scale? No, I’m just kidding! I would say it has been a good season. I would say that the team has given me a good car this season, which has been important for me because it has given me the opportunity to raise my share value, and gave me a great opportunity for next year to have a chance to get a winning car to win races – which is what I would like to do. For me it has been a good season, and the team gave me a good car.

Of course, it was not as good as we wanted it to be, because we wanted to be on the podium winning races, but it was consistent. We always knew what we had. We knew whichever track we went to we would be up there, finishing top five for a series of races, and seventh in the world championship is okay. From my point of view, I got the best out of the car this season because I could not have beaten [Lewis] Hamilton or [Kimi] Raikkonen, I don’t think there was any way of beating them, so I got the best out of it. So I am quite pleased.

Q. Both you and Williams made a good step forward this season. How difficult a decision then was is for you to leave?

NR: To say it clearly, Williams is a great team. And there is no reason why they cannot be just as good as this year, next season – which is running quite close to the top. But I am not sure they can win races at the moment. With budgets still being rather free, and an engine change coming up which will not help, so I am not sure they can win races at this point of time – although I am convinced that they can do very well. But I would like to win races. That is what really encouraged me to push for the next step.

Q. So that was your priority – to be in a race-winning car from race one next year?

NR: You never know, but I would like to try and get into a car where I think there is a very good chance of winning.

Q. So will you announce your future after this race?

NR: No. It is going to take some time.

Q. Why will it take time? Is there some reason?

NR: Sorry, I can’t say.

Q. There is some talk that your affiliation is to Mercedes-Benz next year, and they will decide where you go…

NR: Sorry…but it is looking good.

Q. When will you able to say something?

NR: I don’t know. That is quite honest actually.

Q. Will it be a big surprise, or is it something that people already know?

NR: Sorry!

Q. You ran on the Abu Dhabi track this morning. What do you think of it?

NR: It looks great. It looks very good. It is very exciting also. The track should be good. With overtaking I am not sure, because the straight is very, very long. It should help overtaking I guess, but I am not sure. We have to wait and see. All the surroundings are spectacular.

What is very nice is the enthusiasm all the people have here. It is quite different to Bahrain, where it still needs to grow in terms of the enthusiasm from the people who live there. Whereas here, it is already very, very big. I was in Dubai for RBS, doing a sponsor day, and everybody was so enthusiastic which was great to see. It should be a very nice event from that point of view.

Q. Have you done the track in the simulator?

NR: On the simulator I did three hours of running. It was very accurate, so I know the track inside out already. When I go out there, I know exactly what to expect.

Q. And the pitlane exit tunnel?

NR: I hit the wall three times! And I heard the McLaren drivers did a couple more than that. It was the outside wall.

Q. So do you think it will be a problem this weekend?

NR: It should be fine. I don’t think there will be any problem.

Q. The fact that Abu Dhabi has made such an effort, do you think it could be a problem for the future of the European races?

NR: You don’t necessarily need that [effort] to have a great grand prix weekend. Most European standards are okay now. F1 needs the grands prix in Europe. The home of F1 is Europe, so I think we need to keep our base there. But it is also nice to have some new races across the world – and to spread F1 a little bit.

 “Two Doves” has a sophisticated, compact form. An introduction gives us a finger-picking guitar in F# major, which motors along throughout, providing the song’s only real rhythmic action. Along with a string section, the key of F# punctuates the form at important points and at different levels of relative strength (indicated in the lyrics above with an asterisk). F# major provides brief respites (see if you can hear them) from the shimmering, somewhat unpredictable chord changes that surround it.

Each of the first two verses, A and A’, splits roughly into two halves followed by a short chorus (“Call on me, call on me, call on me”).  The first verse (A’) is symmetrical in that the second half repeats the music of the first with new words. Melodically, the singer leaps unpredictable all over the place with the first two lines (“Geranium kisser / Skin like silk and face like glass”) only to come back down to earth with a step-wise melody for the third (“Don’t confront me with my failures”). What’s interesting at this point is that the arrival of the first “rest stop” (after “failures”). Its arrival is somewhat surprising; we expect continuation, but we suddenly get the F# major chord (at the first asterisk). We want more, but she is done with this haiku-like thought (“Don’t confront me with your failures”). The confrontation, whatever it is about, ends there; the strings punctuate her statement, and the obedient, motoring guitar obliges her with a F# major chord.

Throughout the song, it should be said, the strings provide the emotional backdrop to the singer’s words, while the guitar remains steadfast, constant in the face of conflict and turbulence. It’s too simple to say that the strings are the female voice and the guitar is the male; rather maybe we can say there’s three-way dialogue going on: the singer, the guitar, and the strings. They interact with each other in ways I am only beginning to get a handle on.

The second half of the first verse (“Kiss me with your mouth open / For your love, better than wine”) gets back to the kissing. The strings are slightly more active here than previously, and the second resting point (after “fragrant”) is a little weaker, allowing for the stronger conclusion after the refrain (“call on me, call on me, call on me”). The leaps in the melody now are even more dramatic, but the comforting, pentatonic melody over the lush strings and non-threatening [nerd alert], tonic – subdominant (I-IV of various sorts) harmonic accompaniment in the guitar adds a folksy, satisfying close to the section.

The second verse follows a similar pattern, again with the idea of “failure” ending the first half of the verse. It’s really intriguing how the ideas of family, youth, and conception get tossed in here all of a sudden. Things that don’t often mingle well together and uncomfortable, but honest: she’s showing the chamber where the singer’s parents conceived her to the object of her own sexual desire. After spending the day with her family, young lovers have to sleep somewhere, right?

The “geranium kisser” of the first verse is now a “geranium killer” in the third, where the symmetrical formal pattern of the first two verses is finally broken. Rationality, with which the singer played fast and loose throughout the song only to be brought into line unexpectedly, is tossed out the window: what was previously a single “half” of a verse is extended, and even given its own strong, conclusive resting place (after “never-ending,” ironically). But of course, the guitar motors along, unobstructed. The strings go haywire in this verse as well. It’s really well done. The final refrain gets extended long enough to contain some extra “thoughts” expressed by the strings.

The fact that it recalls like this Nico song (written by Jackson Browne), also in F# major, which was featured and introduced to the public at large in the Wes Anderson movie, The Royal Tenenbaums, is bonus. That movie’s chock full of family, sex, youth, etc.

σκηνή από την ταινία the doors με μουσική υπόκρουση το venus in furs.
η πρώτη φορά που το άκουσα ήταν εδώ.
δεν ξέρω πόσο βασισμένη σε αληθινά στοιχεία είναι η ταινία αλλά για έναν έφηβο, είναι μάλλον μεθυστική.

στο τέλος του video ακούγεται και το heroin επίσης από velvet underground. enjoy. you have to.

Nieuw en onbekend! Gisteren had ik het genoegen om samen met Nico een nieuw ding in fotografie te doen.

PARTYFOTOGRAFIE!

‘Vreed’ onderschatte vorm van fotografie! In’t begin lukte het eigenlijk van geen kanten maar naarmate de avond vorderde ging het beter en beter (misschien ook door de drank bij het feestende volk ;o) )

Jammergenoeg zat ik met mijn Nikon D80 op het randje van de ISO-waardes te werken (en soms zelfs een beetje erover).
Opzet: Ik wou zoveel mogelijk de kleuren van de fuif laten overheersen maar toch met een oog voor de gefotografeerde personen.

Op enkele technische mankementen na, viel het eigenlijk nogal mee. Ik bekijk dit als een leerschool voor de volgende keer…
