Mi-am descoperit cel mai nou bun prieten, Nicorette. Nu e ăla din poză, că nici pielea aia nu e a mea – la mine arată mult mai sexi. Acest bun preten şi tovarăş m-a făcut să dorm toată ziua, cum ar veni 12 ore. Asta e toată ziua a doua. Se pare că lăsatul de fumat e mai uşor decât îmi imaginam.

Singurele probleme pe care le-am întâmpinat până acum au fost sfaturile. Toată lumea are o părere despre ce să fac când am chef să fumez, despre ce muzică să ascult când nu am chef să fumez. Am o agendă întreagă cu numere de telefon la care pot să sun în cazul în care simt că cedez. În aceeaşi agendă am notate cel puţin două moduri diferite în care să reacţionez în fiecare situaţie posibilă.

Trebuie să beau multă cafea şi să dorm mult; să nu ies din casă sub nicio formă şi să îmi ocup cât mai mult timp cu plimbări lungi; în ceea ce priveşte mâncarea, toată lumea a căzut de acord.

Quitting smoking is the future!

It’s been an interesting forty-plus hours sans cigarettes. I’ve mushed my mind flat and flotational, selected more than one straw for my iced coffee to go, had near-pornographic, violent thoughts about what I’d do to my next pack of Parliaments, and I’ve gotten some nice encouragements and helpful advice—even some free medicinal help along the way. Deemphasizing, hopefully, all the personal pity and self-obsessed rituals that crop up every few hours to be forgotten or strictly followed or later supplanted, here is a brief incomplete account.

First, after my morning flurry of emails to friends and loved ones announcing my intentions, meant to steal my resolve, well, to burn my resolve into a steel sconce that I might wear upon this broken frame in the place of my usual puffy scruffed smoker’s face, to make the little devils all the more difficult to stuff, continually, at every five-minute interval between laundromat, subway, meal, beer, and bed, my father had this to say, simply: “No Cigs is Real Man.” No Nonsense here. The capital letters, the eschewed articles. Powerful language. A confidence from a man that has done this a few times now. Solidarity, pop! I’ll become a Real Man yet!

Later that morning, after a flurry of see-me tweets, one of which requested one of my “followers” (there are twenty-seven) to “send me that surprisingly moving article/interview with that great author where he talks about quitting cigarettes ‘the buzz of not buzzing’”, quailty came through with the following link, and a pull-quote: “I have in gum, a mint, and three Australian tea-tree toothpicks that a Wiccan friend swears by.” I had, in my cigaretteless stupified state, forgotten that I even had a specific author/interview in mind, which I had read years earlier. Solidarity, and a really great interview to read, but yeah, as he sez, I have the “attention span of a toddler.” Thanks, q!

At some point yesterday afternoon I decided to get totally jacked on iced coffee as some kind of “reward” for my (as yet basically totally unfulfilled) new life-affirming, noble decision. Bad choice! Immediately felt completely untethered from reality. Mentioned this to Jawbone in an email, would beer help? Jawbone, having been a big daddy smoker for years, some of which I witnessed myself, nobly quit recently. J. and I have spoken at some length of our shared struggles to keep sleep “regular,” attain a stable mental state, etc., and he has—he should know—advocated time and again for quitting coffee and cigarettes. Well. Here’s Jawbone’s confidence, printed with permission (haven’t really had the opportunity to follow most of this yet, but it’s appreciated, and reveals a clinical understanding based on experience I hope to pass on, whether or not I make it out of the woods, etc):

Then I was off to break bread with a certain West Villager who had, it seems, put the fool thought in my head about quitting smoking just days earlier, amid our correspondence over these bread-braking plans, he mentioning having been c-less for 5 days and feeling so good, no cardiac arrhythmias, better than ever, it’s a slippery slope from a mooch to 1/2 pack per (and far beyond that I was!), etc. Well, feeling positively batty from the caffeine and sorry for myself from a long day of tweeting and announcing and jonesing and treating myself, I of course commenced straight to self-pitifying over a cold Saporo. Finally with my bitching and moaning M.S. had no choice but to break out his medicinal gum, Thrive. Apparently you can just dial 311, press 2, and if you are in New York state, a big box of this valuable stuff with show up at yr door. I had done my dalliance with Nicorette in Echo Park in 2006, investing quite heavily in the stuff. It still gives me a bit of a burn, bc I can’t help swallowing, and a bit of a tummy upset, but it helps to have the physical displacement thing going on. Even tho he prob. didn’t need one, M.S. had a chew with me as we capped the evening off. What a guy!

Coco Chanel's cigarette: night-thoughts on tobacco

Hong Kong authorities have required the promoters of a new movie about Coco Chanel to airbrush out her cigarette, and the result is above and to the right.

The idiotic libertarian/anarchist position would be that Hong Kong “city fathers” are being a bunch of old fuddy-duddies in requiring Coco Chanel’s cigarette to be removed from posters in our MTR (subway), as if “censorship” had a single meaning.

However, with some reluctance, I think they acted right.

I started smoking at the age of 16 for two reasons. The first is that it was “cool”, and expressed Bohemian resistance to muscular Christianity of all sorts. The second, background reason was that it couldn’t, in the final analysis, be all that dangerous, because I was surrounded, in 1965, of images of glamorous normal people lighting up.

The second reason seems naive. However, the normal commercial law (that products sold in a free market must be “fit for use”, not causing death and illness when used as directed and as expected) expresses a subconscious feeling which is “naive” only in being unexamined. People in market societies in fact need to have some assurance that the Coca Cola drinks they buy at McDonald’s won’t contain a dead mouse at the bottom.

The macho “alternative” view is a cynical caveat emptor, which sniggers at the naive expectation, but whose cynicism manufactures the phenomenon it pretends to oppose in a Foucauldian manner.

The software industry, with its overtly macho demographic, was able to infect commercial software vending with caveat emptor by means of those famous disclaimers which we never read but always approve when we install software. The result? Because software creation companies aren’t under “fit for use” discipline, actual software coding in commercial software companies is always under enormous amounts of unrealistic deadline pressure…while offline, “open source” creation is nothing more than the theft of intellectual production and its subsequent transformation into intellectual “property” by traders who deal in virtual time-slices of slaves: the slaves being the creators of the “free as in free speech” software.

The effect of macho fantasies about caveat emptor on software is of course worthy of a separate blog post. But the tobacco industry was able, in the 1890s and attendant on the birth of the US Food and Drug administration, to gain a very lucrative exemption from regulation in the same thug fashion as the software industry.

As a result, and owing to hatred of working people (whose drug of choice is, properly speaking, not tobacco but its active and addictive element, nicotine, and who use this drug to survive boring industrial and office work), the delivery system for self-administration of nicotine is a murder weapon: globules of “tar” (concentrated soluble carbon, and various other poisons including plutonium) carry the nicotine into the blood stream, and then accumulate carcinogenetically.

This mass murder of working people was aided and abetted by advertising which showed glamorous actresses smoking.

My late Mom grew up poor in New York City of the 1930s and 1940s and was surrounded by imagery of glamorous, wealthy and upper class actresses smoking in movies and promoting tobacco in advertisements. As a direct result she died young for an American woman, at the age of 72. I was not thereafter able to talk with her about my kids. I wasn’t able to share with her my publishing a book or my son’s top SATs. Today, I am unable to speak with her on the uncaring, to me, behavior of my kids.

I started smoking in 1965 and soon graduated to a pack of Gauloises a day as a philosophy major, in love with the romance of Picasso and Sartre. But owing to the expense of Gauloises, I switched after graduation to Camel unfiltered cigarettes.

When I was in Paris in 2004, I found myself buying a pack of Gauloises owing to nostalgie de la boue, and smoking one. I became violently ill. Today, the packet is obscured by bold-faced warnings, and these warnings kept me from buying Gauloises in the tabac even as images on Hong Kong packets of the consequences of smoking prevent me from backsliding.

In the idiot, macho, libertarian, anarchist narrative, my manhood is in question: in the idiot, macho, libertarian, anarchist narrative, I’m supposed to fantasize that I’m a monad or a god uninfluenced by society. But (Kant again) true freedom comes from the acknowledgement of true limits.

Unfiltered cigarettes were more Authentic than the “lite” cigarettes of the scared bourgeois “clutching their spectre of repose”, and unfiltered cigarettes went better with the dark beer I discovered in London in 1972. I also figured that I smoked fewer, and indeed, this is confirmed both by studies and my experience when I switched to filtered Parliaments and Kools in 1976.

I switched to a pipe in the later 1970s. Today, pipe smoking marks one as a complete loser, dork and potential pedophile, but back then it had a certain academic glamor. It forced me to be more conscious of my smoking as I had to clean the pipes carefully, and fill them properly. I became a pipe gourmand and with some limited fondness remember some of the beautiful, sturdy briars I owned in the 1970, and Balkan Sobranie tobacco.

But following my divorce, and when I started running marathons, the idea of smoking seemed to become completely inauthentic. I was also amazed to discover that a really hard run (San Francisco to Sausalito) not only removed all desire to smoke but gave me the feelings of wholeness that I was seeking in smoke.

However, life went on and became more difficult. I increasingly backslid, and by the late 1980s I was nipping out about once a week for a smoke at the loading dock at the Princeton information center on Prospect avenue. I was joined at times by John “A Beautiful Mind” Nash who like many recovering mental patients smoked rather heavily, and he’d occasionally ask me questions about the mainframe and the Internet.

But I was in crisis, because I’d started smoking to concentrate on dreary or exacting tasks including programming, and could no longer smoke at my desk.

In the Nineties, as my readdiction increased, Nicorette gum was introduced and it has saved my life despite its expense, since I could self-dose while working hard. Today I am gradually (and after many more years than I’m am supposed to) reducing the use of the gum and am looking forward to freedom from nicotine.

But, as Shakespeare’s James Tyrell cries after murdering the Princes in the Tower at the behest of the old monster,

When I was without money during the writing of my book, I used Copenhagen spit tobacco.

This is known to cause fatal mouth cancer and trashed my teeth, but it was affordable and “helped” me to endure near homelessness. When I became fully employed again, I returned to Nicorette, which is increasingly available in “generic” and house brands.

In Paris this month, I could use the more civilised Nicorette pastille and reduced the dosage significantly.

I am very absent-minded concerning most trivial tasks and demands of everyday life, but I note that I never “forget” to smoke, and I never “forgot”, or even mislaid, my nicotine paraphernelia, from Gauloise and matches, to tobacco and pipe, to Nicorette flat.

But when the dose is reduced I start to forget to self-administer. I read recently of a high-tech brain operation which claimed to “cure” nicotine addiction, but with the usual gross medical brutality of such cures; it is the destruction of brain tissue so the smoker “forgets to smoke”.

I think as a layperson that it is possible that nicotine, unlike other drugs, may be a completely “self-reflexive” drug. Other drugs have a twofold effect. They provide social and personal gratification (the camaraderie of the bar, the gemutlichkeit of the opium den) as well as physical gratification followed by physical dependence (the morning after the night before, the shakes for the peecee pipee).

If nicotine is purely self-reflexive it may create a strong memory “you must smoke, or administer Nicorette”, and this memory will disappear once I reduce the dosage to a minimum.

Whereas nicotine may simply redefine, through dopamine rewiring, what it feels to be normal as opposed to what it feels to be out of it and weird by being present in the system. The state of nicotine “normality” not pleasant in particular, just temporarily, and falsely, reconciled with objective social conditions that are unendurable, such that its presence becomes demanded even in objective conditions that are easier.

You can take that as read. “Objective social conditions that are unendurable”: children who travel to SE Asia without even apologizing for not stopping in Hong Kong. Thirty years of 16 hours a day writing compilers that solved business problems, and making strangers rich thereby, but ending up nearly homeless in Asia because the kids grew up in a town I wanted to grow up in. The things I’ve done wrong, too.

But: what if the very phrase “original sin” expresses a guilt and responsibility that was God’s in the original story? He created Adam and Eve knowing that they would fall, and in the “Gnostic heresy” this means that beyond “God”, a flawed creator, there is a meta- or supra- God, or Goddess who will wipe away the years we hide when we say “smoke gets in your eyes”, by saying, “you did not sin: you shall now Forget you smoked and return to the Garden, you who have so long, so long, sought Me”.

Heaven would be somehow forgetting the pain we have caused and that we have endured. Or, as I felt when free of nicotine and smoke in the early Eighties, a remembering like a painting by Poussin, who so distanced himself from life in order to love the world: to recreate the light that surrounded Adam and Eve, or that was sought by Blind Orion.

However, in terms of policy, nicotine has a known effect in reconciling people to stressful lives as they are, en masse and with so very few exceptions, shoveled by armored bulldozers into the pile of bodies contemplated by Walter Benjamin’s “angel of history”, who cannot see Zion. Nicotine should be permanently delinked from tobacco and available in pastille form world-wide as it is in France. It has been made available historically only in lethal forms because of hatred of the working class and Puritan hatred of pleasure.

It’s different now. I still “want”. But I had a strange experience ten years ago.

I was getting ready for a run along the old Illinois and Michigan canal near Joliet, Illinois. I found that some folks had had a beer party that included nappy changing, and the muddy, beautiful flat next to the fast-flowing Illinois that parallels the canal was littered with beer cans and shitty diapers.

Cheerfully I cleaned up the mud flat to restore it, without resentment of the party hearties. I felt like the “hands reaching down”. This is the (rare) feeling you get when you yourself change a nappy, as I got when taking care of the kids…and as I get in some way in my wonderful, wonderful job, where I am actually paid to teach all sorts of marvels to cute-as-a-button Oriental rug rats and adolescents.

The element of pure eleemosynary Duty as found in Kant is a necessary part even of a teaching “job”: the employment contract cancels the eleemosynary if you’re pushing bonds at Hong Kong and Shanghai bank, producing toxic exchange value exclusively. Starting smoking falsely reconciled me to “concentrating” on narrow and diminished goals such as learning IBM 1401 assembler programming so as to be either employable, or being able to work in the rear with the gear at Tanh Son Nut air-base as opposed to humping through the combat zone.

It made me sick, and less hungry, and with the diminished need of the sick: of ghosts. My parents found need a threat, and I was anxious to please.

But then, in the dark months of 1981, I went out for a run…around the block, and then around two blocks, and so on. This was a vision of a pillar of fire.

I haven’t stopped running, or working out with swimming and indoor aerobics and the Dance, since 1981 for more than a week or so at a time, very rarely.

Idolatry, in my fat pal Adorno (and blessed be He, a latter-day prophet), is trusting to a graven image of Resurrection in time. But somehow, running-and-working-out never betrayed me. It has been like the little angel guy on Elmer Fudd’s right shoulder as opposed to smoking, the little devil on the left.

Opting to save for tuition instead of buying designer jeans is a good example So is opting to stick with your crappy-looking buy efficient cellular phone, instead of getting a shiny and sleek iPhone. So is the decision to stop smoking to prevent medical complications from happening to you, and costing you tons of dollars; not to mention preventing you from living a healthy life.

If you’ve been following the logic of the foregoing, then you already have a clear picture of what it takes to stop smoking. The best way to do it is to fully understand giving it up costs you, what not taking part in that hip and addictive habit will end you up with, and how much discomfort, for a time, quitting would mean, physically, emotionally, mentally.

Will power is the best way. The problem is this method requires your soul to understand, to want to stop smoking altogether. A pregnant mother decides to quit drugs when the medical checkups showed her baby was declining in health while in her womb. A father goes gambling-sobber after his eldest straight-A daughter failed to pay her student loans. A single mom decides to devote more time at home, and leave her night life, when she notices how much her son needs her.

We just need to find a reason. Our will power will provide the strength to get us through our nicotine addiction. It will not be easy. Different from the person that emerged from the addiction. Like it was all a bad dream, or memories of a person just trying to make do with her naive worldview.

The thing about quitting smoking through willpower is that you need no rationalizations. You stop smoking because, insert reason here. And you see that reason as inevitable, as true regardless of anyone else who listens to you. Like a mathematical fact. True, regardless how much you rationalize against it, whine about it.

You will receive all sort of discouragement. Most people have smoking buddies and the media is filled with ads encouraging a life incomplete without a puff. But these will not hamper you if you know in your bones you want to quit because you have to. Not want to. That there are compelling reasons outside one’s selfish circle of reasons that demand you to be better than who you are.

So if you want some non-hypocritical reason to stop smoking. There it is. Find a reason. The methods won’t matter as much as long as you will is convinced you have to quit. You will emerge a better person for this.

Non aggiorno il Blog da oltre dieci giorni. Forse è uno dei tanti giocattolini di cui mi sono stancato. I quattro lettori che mi vengono a trovare tramite i motori di ricerca sono interessati al fumo: smettere di fumare, danni provocati dal fumo, ecc…; oppure al sesso, argomento di cui questo blog non si è quasi mai occupato.

Allora torno ad occuparmi del fumo. Il mio fedele counter mi dice che non fumo da ormai sei mesi e mezzo, quasi 200 giorni e solo adesso molto lentamente la voglia sta passando.
Continuo a masticare le nicorette, ma ormai in dosi omeopatiche e presto mi sbarazzerò anche di quelle. Mangio un po’ di più e soprattutto con più gusto.
Sono ingrassato: decisamente. Sono almeno 5 chili più di quando ho smesso e da un mese a questa parte ho incominciato a dimagrire, quindi sono arrivato a pesare anche 6 – 7 chili in più.
Corro, di più e più velocemente di quanto abbia mai fatto in precedenza.
Anche mia moglie a finalmente smesso di fumare, ora siamo in minoranza alle cene con gli amici, ma siamo una coppia il che aiuta a non sentirsi soli.
Sul peso mi riservo di scrivere un altro post. Intanto mi metto le scarpette e vado a farmi i miei 5 Km.

I did not vote for Mr. Obama (went with the always stylish Bob Barr for moral reasons), but I will say this however, having an addiction to nicotine or tobacco by products is not as unhealthy as some of our previious presidents’ habits. I was combing the internet for information on Nicorette when I came across a forum where people were talking shit about Obama. “Do we really want a president whos in nicotine withdrawl”..

Time for a reality blast. Our last president was an adrenaline junky, often spent his time inebriated or “coked out” as the kids put it and couldn’t even phrase a complete sentence. “Working hard to putting food on your family”, deserves a double take and a whacky sound effect.

Never mind that, what about ol’ honest Abe, his addiction to fine theatre led to his untimely demise. What about Taft and his affinity for hot water holding devices, he started a trend in the White House that still hasn’t left the building. Damn bathtubs. What about Franklin Delano Roosevelt? He always had a lit up fag in his hand!

In addition to the fact that I’m in one of my periods of “not interested in the internet,” I’m also busy with some stuff these days…

Because I am insane, I’m working on three major things right now – dieting (I’ve got to get rid of about 35 more pounds), quitting smoking (by means of phasing out), and cutting out caffeine (also phasing out).

The dieting is going pretty well. When I get momentum with something like that, it’s not so hard. Exercising is the difficult part because I HATE IT. So being active is happening in baby steps.

Brief walks at the Richland Creek Greenway with the dogs, time on the Wii Fit (I bought it last summer – it’s about time I start using the damn thing), a little yoga, etc. Next month, Dr. Frankenfurter and I will be joining Sportsplex – the time we spend working out versus the time we spend drooling over Preds practices is still an open question.

I haven’t had success quitting smoking in the 11 or so years that I’ve been doing it (obviously), and cold turkey just doesn’t work for me. I’m taking it very slowly and replacing strategic cigarettes of the day with nicotine gum.

I bought a giant package of the Nicorette White Ice Mint Gum at Costco (it is NOT fun to spend $60 on a pack of gum!), and you wouldn’t believe it, but it tastes like … drum roll, please … GUM! I guess if this doesn’t work I’ll try Chantix, but that’s not covered by my insurance, so I’m trying this method first.

I’ve made progress with the whole caffeine thing. It started out as me just wanting to cut out soft drinks, but with money being tight, I figured I should probably cut out the daily trip to Starbucks also. Although I only drink diet sodas (I LOVE LOVE LOVE Cherry Coke Zero), that shit isn’t good for me, either, and the price just keeps going up. I’m still having a couple of sodas most days, but I’ve quit keeping it at home (I could come home from work and drink 5 or 6 of them).

I have had no success cutting out the daily venti iced coffee (unsweetened), but at $2.84 a day, it’s going to have to go. Eventually, I’ll just cut down, but I’m not sure that I’m ready yet. Apparently I consume enough caffeine that, if I go without (or when I first cut out the massive soft drink consumption), I get headaches. Ahhhh, addiction.

Hopefully in a few months I will be thin and not smell like coffee and cigarettes.

Wow, this suddenly turned into a boring self-improvement journal. I can’t see anybody caring about any of this stuff – if someone else wrote this, I wouldn’t have even read this far – but I just felt chatty.

On an unrelated note: since I’m not a tween, I don’t really understand/know about all of this Twilight stuff, but that boy’s hair really bugs me. However, I can’t really talk – I was bummed this week that I didn’t get to go see NKOTB. I guess we all had our boy bands or Hannah Montana type of stuff at one time or another.
