While there are some things about Miami that I find disconcerting, different, or just plain don

While there are some things about Miami that I find disconcerting, different, or just plain don’t like, it is undeniable that the beautiful, gorgeous, glorious surroundings go a long way in making up for those things.

For example, rush hour traffic. Rush hour in Miami is awwwwwfullllllll. (I know…I walk to work. What am I talking about.) But the times when I do have to drive anywhere between the hours of 4 p.m. and, ohh, 6 p.m., it just makes me want to bang my head against a wall. (Read my previous post for some lovely musings on Miami drivers and horn-honking.)

But then, you are sitting at a stop light, and you look up, and see this.

It just brightens up your day and relaxes you…as you drive home after a long day at the beach. Or whatever.

I took these this past Sunday on the way home from the symphony. The first five minutes I was in my car, I kept thinking, I should get a picture of them. Finally I pulled over, and took a couple.

The one with the palm tree silhouette is my favorite.

Every sunset photograph should have a palm tree silhouette in it, don’t you think?

This past weekend, I went to see the Miami City Ballet perform The Nutcracker at the Adrienne Arsht

This past weekend, I went to see the Miami City Ballet perform The Nutcracker at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts with several of the gals that I work with.

Cheese.

This is the performing arts center building. I’m sure you will recognize it from my pictures, its pretty distinct, what with the crazy fans and all. It’s even more impressive inside!

This is Kristina and I! Kristina, as well as another girl who went with us, had never seen The Nutcracker before!

This is the roof of the valet circle at the performing arts center. Isn’t it amazing?

There are actually two main halls at the Arsht, one is the Ballet Opera House, and the other is the Concert Hall. (You know what was playing at the Concert Hall the night we saw The Nutcracker? The Messiah. Ahhhh. Good thing I didn’t know about that…it might have presented a very difficult decision.)

Sidenote: this road that the sky bridge is crossing is Biscayne Blvd., which is the main drag that I take to get…pretty much everywhere. It’s other name is U.S. 1. (Or at least the part of U.S. 1 that goes through downtown Miami is called Biscayne Boulevard). Sometimes I call it Highway 1, and everyone in the office looks at me like I’m a nutter, even though it is a U.S. Highway, the way I would say Highway 16 or Highway 18.

The Arsht Center is the third-largest performing arts center in the United States! Fun fact: the Arsht is built on part of a Burdines department store building from 1929, which was built in the Art Deco style decades before the Art Deco buildings sprang up on South Beach.

This is the Ballet/Opera House.

Isn’t it beautiful?

I love all of the tiny lightbulbs all over the building. It seems so glamorous, like Hollywood in the 1940s.

That’s Kristina in the picture looking back, wondering where I am because I am taking so long, taking pictures.

Speaking of a million tiny lightbulbs…

I love the candy cane-striped columns! Isn’t it festive? I can’t even imagine how magical I would have found this if I was a small child….to be honest, it still feels pretty magical. These pictures don’t even come close to capturing the massive space in the building. It really is just simply huge.

These are the mezzanine and the gallery, so when you walk up to them, you lean wayyyy out over the foyer.

And this is the theater! It wasn’t as ornate as some other theaters I have been in – for example, it doesn’t have the Paramount’s gold leafing. But the seats were very comfortable and everything was extremely functional.

This is me and Camille. Camille was the one who orchestrated this little adventure – she is done working in February and I don’t know how I am going to get to do anything when she leaves! Camille loves dance, including ballet. She and Tania spent the entire night after the ballet doing their own *ahem* ballet steps to The Nutcracker music at my apartment.

We saw the George Balanchine version of The Nutcracker, which is different than the version that the Pacific Northwest Ballet performs. PNB performs the Kent Stowell choreography, and MCB does the Balanchine choreography, which is the more traditional version. Also, PNB uses Maurice Sendak’s costumes and sets, so the whole ballet seems more fantastical. The Miami City Ballet had the more traditional (depending on which way you look at it…perhaps I should say, more well-known) version of the ballet, in which Marie and the Prince travel to the Land of the Sugar Plums and witness the performances by the different candies (Arabian Coffee is always my favorite…although in this performance, it was a four-way tie between the Coffee, the Marzipan, the pas de deux between the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier, and the Waltz of the Flowers, which is always beautiful but I have only ever seen it with pastel costumes and these costumes were bright orange and yellow and red chiffon, with dark green bodices like stems…oh such beautiful dances!). I think that the last version I saw, prior to this one, was one where Clara and the Prince traveled by sea to another land and there was much more dancing about the Prince and the spell he had been put under to become a Nutcracker…this ballet pretty much skipped all of that.

This is Tania and Kristina! We are all very excited for the show to start!!

Even the inside of the theater is a more Art Deco style. I think that is why I think it is less ornate than a typical theater – it is because Art Deco has pretty clean lines, as it is.

Another thing – our entire section was completely full of adorable little kids! There was one little cutie about ten seats down that made several loud comments about the show…but they were cute, rather than annoying. She said, “Ooh, look…they are LIVE dancing dolls!” when Herr Drosselmeyer brought out the life-size dolls. It was kind of nice to hear it through the eyes of the child. It also reminds me of the Ballet School books I used to read when I was in elementary school, and the one book where one of the characters (Megan, I think her name was?) played Marie in the school’s version of The Nutcracker and the boy she liked, Dean, was the prince, and the whole story was about how they liked each other but they were shy because the boys teased Dean for being a ballet dancer. I think they were in like the fifth grade or something. Anyway, in the book, Megan can’t throw, so she is embarrassed when she has to throw the slipper at the Mouse King, and Dean has to teach her how to throw a softball so she can throw her shoe. And that is all I kept thinking about while watching the ballet. Well, during the Mouse King-fighting scene, anyway.

This little girl was sitting in front of me, and she was just too cute the entire time. It reminded me of when my mom used to take me to see The Nutcracker and I got to wear my little taffeta dress and patent leather shoes. Oh, those were the days!

This afternoon I went to see the New World Symphony on Lincoln Road (on South Beach) with a group of girls I work with. We got free tickets to the performance because a couple of the girls had met some guys at a bar (always a good start to a story…) and it turned out the guys were bass players in the symphony! My friend Sairah, apparently, had yelled at the guys for being so loud in the bar that she couldn’t talk loud enough to be heard over them…somehow this translated into them giving them six free tickets! I, of course, invited myself along because I can’t pass up anything good and free.

Just kidding. They invited me.

Anyway, we went to see “Tales of Two Cities: Paris and Vienna.”

The New World Symphony is a fellowship program that prepares graduates of major music programs for leadership roles in orchestras around the world. The playbill listed the majority of players as being between ages 25 and 30, and probably 95% of those had a Master’s degree in music. Most were graduates of conservatories.

We got to the theater a little early, so we were waiting outside…for no particular reason, now that I think about it. This picture was taken before I adjusted the settings, so it is over-exposed, but I love it because it perfectly captures the craziness of the gals I work with!

Ahh…that’s better.

This is the lovely Olga…she works with me and is in charge of replication…that is, replicating our organization into what I think of as franchises, kind of, although I’m sure she would have more accurate terminology for it. Basically setting up different branches (?) in other cities around the United States. Doesn’t she have pretty eyes!

This is Camille. Camille likes to make funny faces when I take pictures of her, so you probably won’t see very many non-joking pictures of Camille! Camille works in “Special Projects”…a little bit of everything. She does a lot of HR stuff, as well as planning our events, and lots of other things. Camille’s dream is to start a non-profit (or just a community group) for regular people to become ballerinas. (Read more about this coming up in “The Nutcracker” post…)

This beautiful lady on the left is Kristina! Kristina is married to one of the guys we all work with. She’s a sweetheart! She also is a published author! Woohoo. We are all getting her autograph now so we can have copies when she is famous.

This is Tania! Tania is an EMS (educational mentoring specialist) at the organization where I work. She does absolutely everything…she runs a handful of different programs, from training mentors, to running life-skills camps, to going to court with the foster youth. She literally does it all. And she has the biggest heart you will ever find. Oh, and she’s super goofy. She always makes me laugh. And wherever you go, people flock to be around Tania.

And this would be…..me. But you guys already know everything about me. Camille took this. Actually, Camille took all of these little portraits…I was busy taking off my sweatshirt so she took control of the camera momentarily.

The New World Symphony plays their concerts at Lincoln Theater, on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach. Its a strong Art Deco building, and its not what I was expecting at all. The building itself is actually quite simple (especially in comparison to the Adrienne Arsht Performing Arts Center, where we saw The Nutcracker last night…more on that coming up).

Perhaps you’ve noticed the amount of grey hair in these pictures…because we went at two o’clock on a Sunday, the crowd was definitely more geriatric than the typical South Beach performance. But I loved it. It was all blue hair and cardigans. It was very sweet.

Camille took these, too. She’s a fan of taking pictures while you are getting reading for her to take pictures.

The results are…interesting.

The symphony played four pieces: Darius Milhaud’s “La Création du monde, Op. 81″; Maurice Ravel’s “Suite from Mother Goose“; Alban Berg’s “Seven Early Songs”; and Richard Strauss’ “Suite from Der Rosenkavalier, Op. 59″.

The concert was supposed to vaguely symbolize the span of human life, from the creation of the world, through childhood fairy tales, through the poetic musings of young adulthood, then looking back on one’s life and relinquishing one’s grip on remaining youthful.

The first piece, La Création du monde (The Creation of the World), depicts the Creation myth of African cosmology, and incorporates Harlem jazz with baroque stylings. The composer, Milhaud, had spent time in the jazz clubs of Harlem and was one of the first to fuse the two musical styles together. Only 17 musicians played in this piece, so it was pretty little. It used a lot of saxophone and less string, so it was more “jazz-bandy” than the rest of the pieces.

The second piece was my most favoritist of favorites! Ravel wrote it originally as a piano duo for the children of some of his friends, based on Perrault’s fairy tales – Beauty and the Beast, Tom Thumb, Sleeping Beauty. The year after he wrote it, he rearranged it and expanded it into a ballet score. I loved this one…it was so moving and you could just hear the stories the music was telling (birds as violin’s squeaking, the “voices” of Beauty and the Beast talking to each other using different instruments…it was gorgeous.

The third piece, “7 Early Songs,” first of all made me think of my friend Nicole Early, who just came to visit me in Florida! But it also featured a singer, Measha Brueggergosman (try spelling that in the first grade!!). She kind of reminded me of an operatic Jill Scott. Alban Berg, who was a student of Arnold Schoenberg, had originally written the songs separately, and then later arranged them into a symmetrical arrrangement. The 7 songs were all different poems set to music (“A Crown of Dreams” by Rilke, “Night” by Carl Hauptmann, “Song Among the Reeds” by Nikolaus Lenau, “Indoors” by Johanne Schlaf, etc.) and Measha sang the lyrics. It was really beautiful.

This is Measha Brueggergosman. Apparently she is quite the celebrity in Canada (she’s Canadian…in case I didn’t mention). She has been on “MTV Cribs Canada” and the Canadian “Project Runway.” She was also wearing this amazing dark bronze lamée dress with necklaces that came down to her knees. I was jealous. Very jealous.

Isn’t she fierce?

The fourth piece was my second favorite. Ehhh, maybe it ties with first for my favorite. It comes from an opera, “Der Rosenkavalier” by Strauss, that’s basically your typical eighteenth-century romantic comedy. It’s about a young man (Der Rosenkavalier, named Octavian) who is having an affair with an aging married princess (the Marschallin), who falls in love with a lovely young thing named Sophie, and then competes with this obnoxious lout, Baron von Ochs, for her affections. The selection we heard was from the perspective of the Marschallin, as she realizes that she has to let Octavian go because she can’t offer him a future like Sophie can. It was quite moving actually. It reminded me sooo much of this book I read for my Humanities class in college, Colette’s “Chéri”.

Look at these pastries that they offered during intermission…I guess they came from a French restaurant down the street. Camille and Kristina knew about it. All I know is, they looked pretty darn good. Although I’m still trying to figure out what that green pastry is supposed to taste like. Is it pistachio? Lime? Umm…avocado? Knowing Miami, it’s probably guava. Everything here is guava flavored. Sigh.

But seriously. Look at the strawberries. Mmmmmm…

This poor little girl was super sick. She slept on the seat in front of us the whole time with her sweatshirt on backwards and her hood on her face. It was so sad. She woke up at intermission and was just hacking up a lung coughing and sniffling. I felt so bad for her! But it also reminded me of a time when I used to get dragged to “culture events” and I would be bored to tears and sleep through them. I guess some things you just have to be a grown-up to appreciate.

I been here about 10 days and have seen all the sites in and around Kathmandu. Going up the Nanakot and seeing the Himalayas was amazing. Can’t wait to fly around Mt Everest and when I return in January to finally do some traveling around.

Had another mishap with a big client the other day. So tired of not being able to switch off. It’s always there and makes me feel so un-free. But then I shouldn’t complain I have it much better than many people.

Yesterday I had dinner with the other partners of my outsourcing company. They are great guys.. I really like Nepalis. They are so heartfelt. The main business partner asked me a lot of questions about my sexuality. About being gay (or bisexual).. if I have a girlfriend or boyfriend, why not, when will I, why am I alone… it went on and on. Not judging though, he was genuinely interested in my situation and full of wonder how different I am to what they are used to.

Still, after all this years I am not comfortable at introducing my self or coming out to certain people as completely gay. I tell them I am bisexual as if this will ensure some familiarity. I guess it’s not lying since I have had a lot of girlfriends.. though, I don’t intend to have any more.. so really, it is a lie and I am not right about it.

After the dinner I went out to a couple of bars and nightclubs and got myself completely smashed. Met some travelers, a Nepali guy tried to crack onto .. fairly forcefully actually (surprising for this culture) he didn’t want to take no for an answer and ‘hovered’ around me.

So funny, I went to 2 clubs, the first one, they suddenly turned the music off and the lights on and just threw everyone out because the police had arrived. This was about 11pm…???WTF?? The second club I went to was pretty big with lots of security. A frisking for weapons felt more then heavy petting in .. all.. the places.. then same thing happened, 1am, police in full combat uniforms and guns come in, turn off the music and tell everyone to leave!! So my rigshaw driver takes me back to the first place I was earlier and it was open again and packed.. stayed there till about 5am.. such a strange place!!

Of course today I am very hungover and spend all day watching DVD’s.. that’s ok, I am on HOLIDAYS!!!

R and I have decided on the costing for the new company yesterday. I am getting very excited about it.. the potential is fabulous!! ahhh… a new life looms outside my Apartment.

Myrtle Beach is already a pretty exciting place. With fantastic beaches and some of the country’s most amazing condo developments, Myrtle Beach combines great living with perfect scenery and amenities. Well get ready for another addition to the Myrtle Beach picture that will add a musical note to the city. In the Spring of 2008 The Hard Rock Park is set to open in Myrtle Beach. This is planned to be the world’s first rock ‘n roll theme park and will cover more than 140 acres and is the first major U.S. attraction to be constructed in the last decade.
From the Gibson website:

Two generations of blues greats — B.B. King and Joe Bonamassa — have recorded a duet together in Las Vegas, according to the Facebook page of producer Kevin Shirley, who’s worked with Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Journey and The Black Crowes.

The song, a rendition of King’s “Night Life,” is said to be included on Bonamassa’s forthcoming album Black Rock, due out in March or April 2010 on the J&R Adventures label. The original cut of “Night Life” was included on King’s 1967 live disc Blues Is King.

32-year-old Bonamassa and 84-year-old King certainly aren’t strangers to one another. Bonamassa got his first big break at the age of 12 when King invited Bonamassa to open a summer tour for him.

Of Bonamassa, King has said, “This kid’s potential is unbelievable. He hasn’t even begun to scratch the surface. He’s one of a kind.” In turn, Bonamassa has named King as his “biggest traditional influence.”

Bonamassa is currently on a world tour that will last through May. See his website for all dates. His latest release is a double DVD called Joe Bonamassa: Live From Royal Albert Hall, on which he is joined on-stage by childhood idol Eric Clapton.

King has 30 U.S. tour dates scheduled through 2010. His most recent album is Live at The BBC: B.B. King, which captures two decades of performances from 1978 to 1998.

She’s been a writer and editor for five years, and acted as the music editor for Knoxville’s Metro Pulse. Ellen recently wrote the next great American novel but has yet to put it down on paper. The same goes for her guitar skills — they’re mostly in her head. She lives in an East Nashville bungalow with her husband Nekos and their two dogs, Garp and Hattie.

Well I had lunch here with an old friend not to long ago. First off the service was good our server was real friendly and nice. The decor as if your walking into Quentin Terantino’s kitchen and dining room, his movie posters adorn the walls and tables. So the atmosphere is cool and the music I’m sure is good….But I it took me about 20 minutes to get over the thick smell of cigarette smoke, the food took a long time to get to the table and our burgers were unique not only in the sense that they were named after Pulp Fiction characters but they were hot dog shaped burgers, not the usual. The fries were small, thin and greasy so that was no good they looked like the little fries that come in the can. I left felling like I should have ordered something else so I guess ill give it a second try but this time order something different. And the prices were not bad at all.

#tastyconclusion: great place if your a night owl good food I think?! I would defiantly go again and try something different.

One of the things about my job working for a not-for-profit organization is that in addition to work

One of the things about my job working for a not-for-profit organization is that in addition to working with those who have nothing, we also spend time with those who have everything, trying to convince them to help in any way that they can – time, money, energy, in-kind donations, etc. Personally, I never know what the heck to wear to anything, because you never know if you will be overdressed wearing jeans and a t-shirt (not that I wear jeans, anyway…so leggings, I guess) or if you will be underdressed wearing sequins and heels.

Recently, Educate Tomorrow had the chance to participate in a ball called A Black & Red Affair. It was hosted (put on? sponsored? given? thrown?) by Jim Berry, who is the local CBS anchor in Miami. (http://cbs4.com/bios/jim.berry.cbs4.9.375565.html). The event was thrown by the South Florida Steppers, which is a Chicago-style step dancing organization that Berry is a major participant in. How does this relate to my job, you wonder? Well, I guess a couple weeks back (before I got here…this even happened the weekend after I got to Florida), Jim Berry made it possible for several of our foster youth to come and take stepping classes with the South Florida Steppers, and then invited them to this event so they could show off what they learned.

That is me and Jim Berry below.

The event was thrown at the Ten Palms restaurant at the Gulfstream Park, which is a race track/casino/hotel/conference center in Hallandale Beach (North Miami). It was decorated for Christmas (more pictures of that to come), and the building was lovely.

This is Jim Berry dancing with one of the foster youth we work with.

That’s me. My self-tanner has all worn off. Sigh.

This is Christianne, a Haitian woman I bonded with over the fact we were both short and couldn’t see the emcee when he was speaking. We got to talking and she told me about her life in Haiti and moving to the United States (she moved in with her daughter, who was the one who brought her to the event that night). She was a fascinating, beautiful woman. And just the sweetest lady ever.

This is Virginia, the executive director of the organization that I work for. She’s amazing!

So far, there’s been a three day weekend for each month that we’ve been here. Remember during the first one, I went on a roadtrip with six other friends to a very beautiful part of northern Spain called Asturias? Well, this time, we decided to go on another road trip, and to drive south.

At first we had planned to go to Granada (one of my must-sees while I’m here this time.) Unfortunately, everyone else in the universe wanted to go to Granada, too, and planned further ahead than we did. There were no tickets left for La Alhambra online, and no hostels. We decided to change routes and go to Cadiz.

Unfortunately for us, no one else wanted to go to Cadiz because everyone goes there for Carnival (Mardi Gras). So the hostels all close this time of year to prepare for the busy season.

We finally decided to go to this small town in Portugal called Lagos. I had heard good things about it, and it fit Marcus’s requirements which were that it was in Portugal, in the south, and on the coast (come to think of it, Marcus sounds pretty demanding.)

This time, there were only five of us. It was Stacy, Marcus, Horti, Asa and me. Asa drove. Since we only had five people this time, it was easier to get a car that had seats for all of us plus room in the trunk; as opposed to the car we had last time where the trunk turned into two more seats. Therefore, the ride was relatively more comfortable.

Here’s a photo of the gang, minus me, the one taking the photo.

The trip started out pretty good…after it took us about a half hour to find our way out of the rental car parking lot.

Following this pattern, an estimated 7-hour drive from Madrid to Lagos took us about 10 hours (and we didn’t even hit that much traffic.) We got there late in the evening on Saturday and immediately settled into our awesome hostel and went out on the town. We paid 10 Euros and got a huge meal of bread, soup, a giant main course (some opted for fish, I opted for chicken) and the most delicious chocolate mousse in the entire universe.

We were stuffed. So what to do after you eat a meal so huge you can barely walk? Oh, the same thing I do every weekend in Spain: go out and drink a ton of alcohol.

The next day, Stacy and I awoke to the news that the boys had already gotten up, gone to the store, and bought us things for breakfast. It was music to my ears. Marcus cooked us some eggs while Stacy and I got ready for the day.

Then we ventured out into Lagos to see the sights.

Lagos is famous for these rock formations called Grottos. I won’t try to explain them, I’ll just show some photos:

We had a good morning wandering around the beaches and things. We stopped for some much-needed coffee, and I was sad to see that the Portuguese have the same “get it over as quickly as possible” philosophy about coffee as the Spaniards do. I really just wanted to stop and sip a giant coffee, instead, this is what we got:

Lagos was a nice change from the hustle and bustle of Madrid. However, we decided to go to Lisbon next. I had been there before in 2005 for a very short weekend.

It was nothing like I remembered it! I’m not sure if it’s because we stayed in a different area, or what, but it had so much more character than I had remembered from before. While it had some wide streets and plazas, it also had a ton of small ones where cars barely fit and it felt really European. It’s so hilly and big. We got lost over and over again trying to find a hostel. We didn’t have a reservation so we had to just try our luck with a bunch in the area, which wasn’t incredibly difficult once we found a place to park the car!

The language in Portugal wasn’t too big of an issue. Stacy knew a little Portuguese, my guide book had some phrases, and because we know Spanish, we could more or less communicate with anyone who didn’t speak English or Spanish. Portuguese people actually speak a lot of English, perhaps because all their movies are subtitled instead of dubbed. I’ve heard that’s one of the reasons that Spaniards speak English so poorly: because they dub things instead of just putting subtitles. The historical context of that is two-fold: for a long time, many Spaniards were illiterate, so subtitles wouldn’t have done them any good. Also, it was easy for Franco to censor movies if they were re-recorded in Spanish and he could decide what was said.

We also ate a really good meal when we got there. It was a typical Portuguese dish of cod, garbanzo beans, onions, and olive oil. It was really good, and again, cheap.

Some photos of Lisbon.

The streets of Lisbon were beautifully and tastefully decorated for Christmas. Someone seriously knew what they were doing when they put those lights up.

Lisbon is a maze of streets and hills and more hills and did I mention hills? So after we trekked to the top of the hill (pretty much the highest point in the city) where the castle is, we discovered it was already closed. We did, however, get to go up on a ledge and watch the sunset. It was beautiful and peaceful and wonderful. The colors were amazing, and with the river and the bridge and the lit up statue in the distance, I loved it. I tried to capture it with my camera but it never worked (why have a night scenery setting at ALL?!) so I told myself just to sit there, enjoy it, and commit it to memory.

Here’s one of my attempts at a photo, anyway:

We sat there for a while and then decided it was time to walk back. We had a brilliant idea to take the cable car to our car (we had to put money in our parking meter.) We paid a Euro forty so that we wouldn’t have to walk, but after 30 minutes of sitting on the cable car, we had only gone about 6 blocks because of traffic. We got out, and started to haul ass to the car because it was about a 40 minute walk and our meter expired in 20 minutes. Unfortunately, some of the weaker members of our party had to “pee” so they excused themselves to go to the hostel while the rest of us (me, Horti) took care of business.

We were about 20 minutes away when Horti and I realized that neither of us had the keys. So Horti continued on to guard the car, while I went back to the hostel to get the keys. Then Marcus and Stacy manned up and came with me to meet Horti at the car. Phew. The walk back was awful (uphill).

When we finally made it back to the hostel, we were exhausted. We’d gone out in Lagos the night before, gotten up early, driven to Lisbon, walked around the hilly hill hills, and were now all laying on our beds in our shared room. Someone said to turn off the lights, and I knew it was all over.

Three and a half hours later, at 11:30pm, we awoke from our deep slumber, got dressed, drank a bottle of gin, and went out on the town.

Spain thinks it has the monopoly on drinking in the street, but, I’ve got news for you. Portugal has got it down (and is not even trying to make it illegal like Spain is.) We went into bars and they gave us Mojitos for 2.50 in plastic cups so we could walk right back out onto the street again! Not that I wanted to be in the street, especially. I really wanted to be inside somewhere warm. But we wanted a fun bar with good music and a good crowd, so we began to search for one.

After lots of wandering, we never did find any place. Oh well.

Stacy, Horti, and Marcus look happy to be out in Lisbon anyway, don’t they?

The next day we grabbed some Portuguese pastry (rumor has it that Portugal has the same amount of pastry shops as Spain does tapas bars) and drove home. We were all very tired after a long and eventful puente.

Everything is geared toward sports, outdoor, year-around sports, people get out and enjoy the beauty that is Denver. I have never seen sporting goods store so big, as I have here.

So lately I’ve made a greater effort to do more of one thing I’m absolutely wild for – Going out, and seeing Local bands perform live. Sure, I could creep around facebook, and find out the names of a few bands that are from my area… then I could myspace them and sort of bob my head along while curled up at home…

Or I could realize that most of the gigs are just down the street from me, and I could go.

Seriously, there’s nothing like the live experience, it makes me feel .. well.. alive! And free, and like there’s truely nowhere else I’d rather be.

They’re all young guys, passionate about music and trying to kick off something great… so I thought I’d make this post just to let the world know that whoever you are, and wherever you are you ought to get off the couch for a few hours on a Friday or Saturday night, and go find out what the live music scene in your town is like. (Trust me, if THIS small ass little town’s got live music that’s worth listening to, yours does to!)

&While I’m raving about live music here, I think I’ll post some myspace links… I’d call it free publicity but I don’t exactly seem to get very many readers on here… D= So I’m not sure how much good it actually does.. but, erm, at least I tried. =D

So, one of my favourites: Amnesia Amnesia.. http://www.myspace.com/amnesiaamnesia <– If you’re into Hardcore/Screamo then check it out, but be aware that as of right now, if my understanding is correct they have plans to launch a new myspace/new promotions etc in the very near future… so watch out for that!

And also: Hero for The Weak.. http://www.myspace.com/herofortheweak <– Not as hardcore but still rockin’, and very good. =)

For more, try these. =D

Zombie Riot: http://www.myspace.com/zrpunk

Silence The City: http://www.myspace.com/wearesilencethecity

Ready For Impact: http://www.myspace.com/readyforimpact

Shauna Irene: http://www.myspace.com/shaunairenemusic <– HUGE talent, but NOT hardcore, acoustic and Beautiful – All her material is her own. =)

Brandon Stacey: http://www.myspace.com/brandonstaceymusic <– Another huge talent, and particularily Lyrically Talented. =)

I’ll mention I’ve seen Mooost of these acts live, but not all, the ones I’ve seen are Excellent live… so if you get the chance to hit up a gig they’re doing, Go for it! Other then that, leavee your comments on the links here at the blog as well as on they’re myspace if you want to – I’d love to hear your thoughts on Everything! <3
