.

FUENTE

Seguimos con The Last Days Of American Crime, que contará entre su reparto con nada más y nada menos que con Sam Worthington, el actor de moda (Terminator Salvación, Avatar, Furia de Titanes…). El comic es publicado por Radical Publishing. Rick Remender, creador del cómic (y de The Man With Screaming Brain, entre otros) escribirá el guión de la película.

FUENTE

FUENTE

FUENTE

Y con esto y un bizcocho…

.

10. Brave New World Aldous Huxley Huxley’s future world where genetic engineering dictates the

10. Brave New World
Aldous Huxley

Huxley’s future world where genetic engineering dictates the laws and structure of society is truly haunting and full of foresight. His tale is the struggle of individualism in a world where people are are literally born and raised to be a particular person and everyone is kept in line. Values are the opposite of what many may believe them to be; monogamy is forbidden for example. This is one of the greatest dystopian novels of the last century, showing the consequences of a constant pursuit for happiness which sacrifices the spirit of the individual.

9. The Forever War
Joe Haldeman

One of the great advantages of using the science fiction and fantasy genres to tell a story is that the author can take a relevant theme, such as war and humanity, and can take it out of its natural setting of this world which allows us to see them from a different perspective and break those themes down and examine them further. This is what Joe Haldeman does with the Forever War, taking the current relevancy to the Vietnam War of that time and putting it in the setting of a war with an Alien race.

8. Nightfall
Issac Asimov

One of the most influential short stories ever written for the science fiction genre by one of the genres great masters. In Nightfall, Asimov describes a solar system with 6 stars, where darkness is a virtual unknown. Nightfall has been called the greatest sci-fi short story ever and helped build the foundation of modern day science fiction.

7. Ender’s Game
Orson Scott Card

Ender’s Game is the story of a young genius who is being groomed as the commander of Earth’s space fleet against an invading alien race. The book follows the boy’s training while describing a world which has been very loosely united through the threat of a common alien foe. This story does come with some critical controversy; some are highly bothered by the fact that Ender’s actions have no consequences, while others describe Ender’s Game as ‘geek porn’. However, only literature with the kind of substance and magic that Ender’s Game has would be able to stir up those controversies. It is a highly engaging story and a solidly constructed piece of sci-fi storytelling.

6. Stranger in a Strange Land
Robert A. Heinlein

Stranger in a strange land was able to use science fiction to explore themes of alienation, culture clashes, and individual freedom. Heinlein’s story of a man who was born as a Martian and returns to Earth transcended the the science fiction readers and brought in readers of other literary genres. Now it is aconsiddered one of the most popular classics sci-fi has to offer and one of its greatest achievements.

5. Nineteen Eighty-Four
George Orwell

In a futuristic world where the government controls everything and Big Brother is always watching you, a man struggles to maintain individual freedom and creative expression. Orwell’s masterpiece plays upon the fears of mankind concerning higher powers and state control in a way that it has become ingrained our very thinking about these issues. It is a haunting look at a world set in the not-so-distant future, all the more haunting because the possibility of that world coming into being is within the realm of believability.

4. The Time Machine
H. G. Wells

H.G. Wells is often considered the father of science fiction, and The Time Machine is perhaps his most acclaimed novel. Wells uses the concept of time travel to explore the future of mankind, which has actually evolved into two different races. The reason for this may seem obvious to some and up for debate to others. The future that Wells describes and how things got to be that way is a feast of scientific speculation. The Time Machine is one of the first science fiction novels and still one of the greatest.

3. Rendezvous with Rama
Aurthur C. Clarke

Science fiction has varying degrees within the genre, and many fans describe sci-fi as being either soft or hard; hard meaning that there is a lot of emphasis on the actual science involved in the story. Clarke was a master of hard science fiction and perhaps never showed off this mastery more than with Rendezvous with Rama. The story describes Earth’s encounter with a mysterious spacecraft, delving into the mysteries of the universe beyond our own knowledge. It has been an influence on countless sci-fi stories since, the most obvious of which are the first Star Trek movie, Alien, and Michael Chrichton’s Sphere. However, most sci-fi writers have been influenced by Clarke’s genius, which shows up very strongly here with Rama.

2. Dune
Frank Herbert

Dune is the Lord of the Rings of science fiction. Herbert’s world is intricate in its details and extensive in its scope while the story is layered in themes. The world of Dune is rich with individual cultures, mythologies, and customs and is so descriptive it’s as though Herbert actually visited the world and recorded what he saw rather than created it from his mind. Dune deals with politics and socioeconomics as well as the depths of the human soul and how one man deals with his fate and how to cope with losing all you once had. Dune is a rich novel which will last in the higher echelon of sci-fi for many years to come.

1. The Foundation Trilogy
Issac Asimov

From the master of science fiction, Asimov’s massive and epic Foundation series has become the cornerstone of science fiction literature. It is the only series to win the Hugo all-time best series award. The story deals with the link between science and civilization and the struggle to retain and preserve knowledge. Foundation has had a huge impact and influence on all science fiction to come after in books, film, and television. It is the best and most important work of science fiction by one of the genre’s great writers.

Not much science fiction (or much fiction in general) involves archaeology. The first one I read was Nightfall. It was originally a long short story by Isaac Asimov, which was later turned into a novel co-authored with Robert Silverberg. The idea of the prehistory of other worlds is fascinating, but it doesn’t really go very far here. On the other hand, there’s also some psychology, propaganda, journalism, mythology and cult religion, so maybe there wasn’t room.

The only other archaeology / science-fiction book I’ve ever read was Engines of God by Jack McDevitt. In both cases, archaeologists discover some past periodic destruction, which turns out to be coming back their way soon. Very dramatic; not something that comes along too often, even in fiction.

A big story over the past few days has been the Staffordshire hoard, possibly the biggest collection of Anglo-Saxon gold and silver ever found. Discovered in July, the hoard was declared treasure on 24th September; BBC reports and a Wikipedia article were created the same day. An exemplary official website was set up, with reports, a catalogue, links to photos on Flickr, and even an educational game to see an Anglo-Saxon village. When part of the hoard was put on show in Birmingham, there were long queues. Discussions have already begun to find the hoard a home, and this is where it get really fascinating.

The hoard is thought to have belonged to a Mercian king. The capital of Mercia was at Tamworth, so should the treasure live there? The current council is based in Stafford, but the major modern regional centre of Mercian lands is actually Birmingham. So where should it live? And that’s before they’ve pulled the funds together to buy it! The find has sparked imaginations: some interviewees even referred to themselves as the heirs of Mercia.

Archaeology does have an impact on modern life and modern people. It’s not just for foreseeing impending destruction.

Elizabeth (Erzsébet) Báthory was known as The Blood Countess because of her sadistic abuse of servants and probably others in her quest for youth and beauty, and probably sexual thrill. She was a countess in Transylvania in the late 16th/early 17th century during the time when nobility was considered to be a species apart from mere humans.

I recently completed a 2-day documentary workshop with legendary documentary photographer Donald Weber.

He gives you a week to complete an assignment series and helps to sequence and edit it at the end of that week. It was a truly enriching experience and fascinating to watch him think. My topic was “what emerges from the woodwork when darkness falls.” It was a challenging experience but I think I walked away with a new lease on storytelling. Here is a taste of what I did last week…I plan to continue this project in the months to come, but with a tweaked focus.

The dryer quit working. Okay, so it didn’t exactly quit working. More like it made a funny cla

The dryer quit working. Okay, so it didn’t exactly quit working. More like it made a funny clanking noise and produced a burning smell, so I purposely stopped and unplugged it so it wouldn’t burn down the house while we were sleeping.

Of course this happened on the eve of Labor Day weekend, which meant that any repair shops I’d want to call wouldn’t be open anyway. Laundry, however, doesn’t stop piling up simply because the dryer is on the fritz. A solution was in order.

This solution …

Clothes hanging on the line.

We have some heavy-duty metal clothesline poles that haven’t seen much use since we moved into the house, mostly because the clotheslines that were strung were metal and rusty, but also because Minnesota winters make it more convenient to use a clothes dryer.

I purchased some synthetic clothesline, which Hubby helped me string, and some clothespins, and we rigged up our old-fashioned clothes dryer. Love that fresh-air scent!

Until I started hanging the laundry, I had forgotten that we did this regularly when I was growing up. All throughout the summer, we’d hang clothes on the line to dry. We also had clotheslines strung up in the basement so we could hang clothes up in the winter. Dad was loathe to spend money on the clothes dryer much of the time.

There were a few other details about line-drying clothes that I had forgotten, like how the clotheslines sag under the weight of the clothing, how jeans take forever to dry, and how stiff the clothing becomes while drying. (Although on this latter point, it could have been that I used a little too much soap with my first load. The subsequent loads weren’t nearly as stiff.)

When you line-dry clothes, weather becomes of utmost concern, as does nightfall. Of course, trying to dry clothes outside when it’s raining is an effort in futility. Thankfully, it was gorgeous all weekend – perfect clothes-drying weather, sunny with a slight breeze. Nightfall is of concern for two reasons. Dew will develop overnight, hence extending the drying time, and someone might get the bright idea to swipe clothing in the darkness.

As you can see from the photo above, we strung to clotheslines. The poles allow for us to string four and I was itching to get at least one more in so I could have more than one load of laundry drying at the same time. Trouble was that those bushes you see in the pic had grown over to the clothes-drying area and we couldn’t get another line in without removing them. Also note the pile of wood below. That, too, had to be moved. Hubby and I got to work, hacking out the brush and loading it in the trailer. We removed the scrubby stuff and buckthorn all the way back to the fence line, leaving only the lilacs.

By the time we were done, we had opened up a nice section of yard and were able to move the wood pile out from under the lines. We also strung one more clothesline, which enabled Daughter to wash and hang a couple of loads of laundry. Quite the day’s work.

While I do miss the dryer, especially for its ability to remove cat hair, I like being able to hang clothing outside. I’m hoping it will save on the electric bill and I can’t wait to see how our sheets smell using this drying method.

On a related note, here is an article from MSNBC on people and industry using less electricity, which may result in lower electric bills.

Lots of stuff to talk about, but only so much room and time. I’ve read a lot of books, seen a lot of movies, and haven’t talked about any of them.

Isaac Asimov’s Nightfall:

Its about a planet named Kalgan (Aeon in the movie, guh) that has six stars in its system. Onos is the primary, a large yellow one like the Sun, there are two blue ones, two white ones, and one red one. The pairs of blue and white move together while Onos and the red one move seperately. They consider it to be day time when Onos is in the sky, because the other are fairly dull. The story follows some academics as they discover that Kalgan has suffered a horrible disaster many times in the past, and – like clock-work – it is about to happen again. That disaster is Nightfall. The idea is to concieve something totally foreign to terrans, perpetual light, then to present the society that knows nothing else what we take for granted, darkness. I was able to suspend my disbelief about the astronomical situation, mainly because I believe that due to the size of the universe that anything that is possible, no matter how unlikely, MUST exist somewhere in the universe. However, the madness that overcomes these people is a tougher pill to swallow, even though it gets easier as the story goes along. What I simply could not take was the presence of a laser gun in that society. They haven’t even left their own planet, but can make laser guns? I can’t follow that.

Overall I liked the book, despite some of its flaws. The movie adaptation, however, was un-watchable. It merely takes the name and basic concept of the book and throws out the rest. Not even the presence of an acting great like David Carradine could redeem it. They had some kind of super psychic in the movie, which was NOT in the book. When they revealed that character I saw red. Anyhow, if you like Asimov, read the book. But stear clear of the movie.

Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen:

Fans of the old cartoons probably won’t like it, but the only Transformer cartoons I watched were Beast Wars (awesome) and Beast Machines (not awesome). I thought it was great. Kind of a shallow action movie, with some romance and worship of self-sacrificing heroes thrown in. Fans of the old show also seemed to be upset when a Linkin Park song was chosen for the main theme, which I didn’t understand. They argued that the original theme (from the cartoon) should have been used. I think they are being bitten by the nostalgia bug because that song sucked ass. The Linkin Park song isn’t great, but its good. This coming from a guy who hasn’t liked Linkin Park since he was 13.

Black Sky:

Black Sky is a video game project about having your own space ship and roaming about the galaxy doing missions, improving your ship, getting new ships, etc. It is still in alpha, and from the stuff being posted on the official forums it may never be finished, but those of you who like that kind of thing (like myself) may want to check it out. Linky.

Remember when I promised to do posts on the Maxim issues? Remember how I posted only one of them then didn’t do it again? Well, that is coming back and I promise to try to do it. Also, I have more book and movie reviews coming in the next week or two.

Once upon a time, many years ago, I journeyed to the land of Tyria for the first time. Tyria was a land free of subscription based play and featured a unique content delivery system. Guild Wars was new, fun, and graphically impressive.

The recent stirrings of Guild War 2 news has me wondering, what has happened in Guild Wars since I left? Besides the three expansions (Factions, Nightfall, Eye of the North), does anyone still play this game?

Intrigued, I decided to download the client, install the game, and log in. I was then greeted with the the familiar load screen. Only this time, 24,408 files were in desperate need of download. Admission to Tyria was denied over my lunch hour. At least for today.

Nightfall Sweet ECA Edinburgh Fringe Festival **** 4 STARS An intriguing play by the Hurtwood Theatr

Nightfall
Sweet ECA
Edinburgh Fringe Festival

**** 4 STARS

An intriguing play by the Hurtwood Theatre Company, Nightfall charts the change of seven separate relationships as each undergoes major changes.

The structure of the play is adorable. After a catwalk style presentation of the different sets of characters the first half is played out in silence, with all storylines and emotions played out with exaggerated actions and facial expressions. Midway through, the jilted groom speaks up and before long words have spread to the other stories – the single parent family with an unbalanced love ratio, the awkward love triangle of friends, the first time parents and the ladies of the night bemoaning their hand.

While the play could easily have continued in light comic mode, the addition of dialogue helps add depth to the emotions in each of the stories and shows another side to each of the actors. The speech, although a bonus, appears a bit shallow in places and tweaked slightly could add even more to the stories and while all the performances are top notch, some of the characters seem superfluous and serve to add more breadth rather than depth to the show.

Nightfall is close to being a very, very good play and if Hurtwood Theatre Company can build on this they’ll be a name I’ll eagerly look out for in the future.
