Marion Koogler McNay Art Museum is an excellent museum and a real gem in San Antonio. The art collection is outstanding and the grounds are very beautiful. Unlike a lot of other museums it is a perfect size – I got through the collection in about an hour and a half and the whole grounds in two. This museum is known as the first modern art museum in Texas. Founded by Marion K. McNay, an heiress, collector, artist, and patron in so many ways, I not only love the museum itself but also the story of its founder. San Antonio is second largest city in the united states of Texas and most popular for its sightseeing, attractions, destinations, nightlife, and accommodation listing like cheap hotels. There is a lot to do in this city include fine art museums, historical missions and plenty of amusement parks in addition to great dining, drinking and hotels in san antonio.

Let’s face it. The typical a la carte fashion show in the Windy city is really more club promotion/publicity stunt to get folks drinking at some of the most notable swanky digs. The models aren’t real and the fashion is barely believable. The only thing you can count on is the buzz from the alcohol. That is just what I expected Sunday night at Cubby Bear for the Bryan K. Osburn Collection of Holiday evening wear. But I must say wholeheartedly that I was pleasantly shocked. What the audience got was high-end couture worn by professional runway models at the most surprising venue.

Brian K.
Osburne presented evening gowns with clean classic lines and party dresses with bold distinctive prints. He is far from a neophyte, having studied with Vera Wang, and being featured in French Vogue.

This man of the ‘cloth’ has styled a roster of Hollywood divas including the Grand Dame Diana Ross, actress Lynne Whitfield and singer Natalie Cole. More than a rising star, Bryan K. Osburn is perched firmly atop the fashion food chain. Not half bad when you’re a block away from the beer guzzling bleachers of Wrigley Field.

Here’s a Thanksgiving conundrum we face every year: after starving ourselves all day, we finally get to chow down on a huge family feast at about 4pm, finish at 7 (or 8 if you help clean up), and then…nothing. What are you to do for the rest of the evening?

Sure, there’s a little apathy-inducing tryptophan coma to overcome, but after all that food, sometimes you just want to get out and move around. Or hang out with some people you’re not related to (or married into). Only there’s nowhere to go and no one to go with—unless you end up calling people you used to hate in high school in the hopes that they too have been dragged home for the holidays.

So you end up stuck watching reruns with your family as everyone starts snoring around the TV. Until now.

Both locations of the Standard Hotel in Los Angeles are offering Thanksgiving activities so you can eat as much as you want and stay out as late as you want. They’ll even cook you dinner if you’ve left plans to the last minute, and both are charging a remarkably reasonable rate for their prix-fixe menus.

At the Standard Downtown LA there will be a rooftop party starting at 9:00pm with Oliver Chico (aka DJ Twist) headlining the musical entertainment. You can catch up with all the other hipsters and loft-dwellers who didn’t make it home for Turkey Day this year thanks to soaring airfares…or family dysfunction. That doesn’t mean you have to miss your turkey dinner, though. You can get a traditional Thanksgiving meal with all the fixings and a pumpkin pie dessert for $40 per person before heading to the roof to party. Planning to make an entire evening out of it? Stay over at the hotel with rates starting at $120.

The Standard Hollywood is also getting in on the turkey love with a three-course dinner going for a bargain $25…and they’ll even be serving it out by the pool. How L.A. Unfortunately, we haven’t heard about a similar party taking place here, but you can throw one back in your room later that night. Rates at this location start at $160.

PLAN A: Japandroids, Surfer Blood @ The Casbah (early show-7:30 p.m.). Canadian fuzz-rockers Japandroids have had a pretty good year on the strength of their debut, Post-Nothing (check out CityBeater Sammi Skolmoski’s cool article about them), but it’s worth showing up extra early to this early-evening show for Surfer Blood (above)—south Florida youngsters that somehow combine ’60s good vibrations, garage-rock and even Dinosaur Jr.-style indie rock into something all their own. Expect them to be headlining this time next year. PLAN B: The Old In Out, Shapes of Future Frames, Sus Hijos @ Radio Room. Sweaty garage-rockers The Old In Out have proven to be one of the hardest-working bands in the local scene (check out some of that cool video below). Both opening bands feature members from the headliner, and judging by the Future Frames show I saw a month ago (featuring Gary Hankins from Scarlet Symphony on vocals), these guys know how to spread the talent equally. PLAN C: Linnzi Zaorski @ Bar Pink. For those of you who want a more mellow Thanksgiving Eve experience, check out this gorgeous jazz chanteuse from Louisiana. We did a story on her not too long ago (you can read it here) and I’ve been thanked by many a person for turning them on to her. Hopefully, the True North douche runoff will stay in their designated douche areas. BACKUP PLAN: Immovable Objects, The Hundred Days, Mexico City Rollers @ Ruby Room. I have a feeling every San Francisco hipster worth his fixed-gear mettle shuns The Hundred Days for sounding just a bit too much like The Killers and U2. Don’t be afraid. Pop wants to be your friend.

MORE COOL STUFF:

Rifat Ziadeh @ Voyeur. The last time this guy gigged at Voyeur, he played an electro remix of Dire Straits’ “Money for Nothing.” I didn’t really know I wanted to hear that until I did.

“My, What Big Cans You Have” feat. DJ DeVoy @ Side Bar. OK, OK. Despite the name and the location, this is a pretty cool event for a Wednesday night. They’ll have a hosted bar from 9 to 10 p.m. for anyone who brings in two canned food items for local food banks, and DJ DeVoy will be on the wheelz of steelz. If anything, a fantastic and altruistic way to start the night before heading to…

“Jivewire” @ The Casbah. This every-month-or-so dance party featuring DJ Atari is probably the only night when non-scenesters are tolerated and Casbah bartenders have to make something more complicated than a vodka and tonic. In any case, it’s sweaty, it’s dank and if you can’t hook up here, then you must not be a good dancer.

“Fall/Winter Drink Menu Unveiling” @ El Dorado. The El-D wants some feedback on their new cocktail menu and everything on the list (and there are some goodies–check out the menu here) is only $5 all night long. The “Buster Brown” certainly caught my eye.

DJs Gabe Vega, Adam Salter, Saul Q, Shark Attack @ Beauty Bar

Café Tacuba @ House of Blues

DJ Mario Orduno @ Whistlestop

Buckfast Superbee (acoustic show) @ Vin de Syrah

The Dickies, Systematic Abuse @ Brick by Brick

Buck-O-Nine, Skanic, High Tide @ Belly Up

I have yet had a chance to publicly thank those who were a part of Phantom’s Republic team while I was online, but before I do that, I am pleased to announce that Fiona Haworth, owner of PrimPads furniture and our Home and Gardens coorespondent will be continuing this blog as owner and blogger. Her posts on prefabs, unique furniture, and just fun items you could find around SL were a breath of fresh air … considering that most SL blogs have to do with clothing and fashion. The bulk of her contributions made her one of our top producers, and among all of the latest posts on the blog, hers generally outperformed everyone else’s … including mine.

So, for those of you who relied on Phantom’s Republic for the latest and best in House and Home … Phantom’s Republic blog will still meet that need, and I’m more than proud to hand over the reins to a person I trust, admire, and respect … Fiona Haworth.

Before I go, I want to thank all who have been involved with Phantom’s Republic over the last year. About this time last year, Fiona agreed to jump on board, and she’s contributed consistently since then. Not too much later, Aristoteles Allen – manager of Cheerno (formerly a.C Store) joined our team, and became our lead men’s stylist – giving our presence in men’s fashion a much needed lift. Since then, several have joined the team — some have stayed or gone their own way: Italiyia, Coldfusion, Xavier, Laya, Autumn, and Jenniferr.

I would also like to thank Giancarlo Takacs for our time as part of his team at Costa Rica Sims. I really enjoyed my time there, and wish him – and all of the residents of CRS – more years of fun and sun in SL!

Thanks to all of you for our wonderful time together! It was a great ride

Fiquem espertos! Vai rolar ESTILINGADA nesta sexta, no Rio Vermelho.

It advertises itself as falling somewhere between a bar and club, but I would call it more of a bar that knows how to cut loose. They host DJ events every Saturday night, as well as a number of other events and parties. They also have a Fussball table (no longer for free, unfortunately) and celebrate foreign holidays such as Halloween…speaking of which, Zerro offers “roast dinners” (turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, etc.) on Sunday nights, so if you are an expat sad about missing your Thanksgiving eats this year, drop by next weekend! The drinks are not cheap here, but the customers are always varied and friendly, and the bilingual bartenders help create a great atmosphere.

Zerro is conveniently located near Dotombori, Shinsaibashi, Minami’s Hub Pubs, and other bars such as Blow and Balabushka. The closest stations are Shinsaibashi and Namba subway stations. Zerro can be contacted by phone at 06-6211-0439.

So I’m in L.A. for an indy film premiere—a film I acted-in, and I’m feeling kind of cool, jetting-in

So I’m in L.A. for an indy film premiere—a film I acted-in, and I’m feeling kind of cool, jetting-in for the weekend, staying at a posh hotel, wading through schools of tourists amassed on Hollywood Boulevard.

And just to bring my ego down below the smog line, I’m reminded that my hotel was paid for with reward points, the film premiere is actually part of a horror convention—not a bona fide film festival and, the picture I’m in had a working budget of somewhere around 84 pesos.

Suffice it to say, I’m not exactly attracting a gallery of paparazzi as I saunter along the strip.

Heading back to the hotel, I spot a cozy little dive bar across the street and decide to venture in for a nightcap.

Once inside, my non-descript Midwestern attire makes me look positively milquetoast among the motley rogues’ gallery of Hollywood Bohemians. There are: wispy, musician-looking guys with tattoos on every inch of their spindly arms. Girls aping Betty Page with the shimmering comic book hair and guys in retro ‘50s shirts with thick-framed glasses like your high school shop teacher wore back in ’79.

The bar was packed with people lounging on beat-up old sofas and probably would have been choked with smoke had it not been in L.A. where even the edgy and hard-assed apparently draw the line at sucking-in second-hand smoke.

So chock-one-up for Flyover Country where I hail, at least in our alternative bar scene, you can still show a little derring-do when it comes to breathing in noxious cigarette fumes. How edgy is that?

But again while I take it all in, I keep reminding myself that this is L.A., where new trends and style are constantly redefined for the rest of the country.

As the rare Tubes opus “White Punks on Dope” blasts thru the tinny speakers, I sidle-up to the bar, trying hard not to let my elbows touch the ripped part of the arm rest where the Styrofoam is exposed. I motion to the wiry, female bartender for a drink and I must confess, as she walks toward me, I notice she has more pierced fleshed than Pinhead from Hellraiser.

She asks me what I’m drinking. As I survey what’s on tap, what do you suppose I see?

Stella Artois? Guinness? Bass Ale? Pilsener Urquell? Sierra Nevada? Sam Adams? Freaking Blue Moon?

No, sir. As the barmaid curtsies backward, she waves her hand a la Vanna White as if to unveil the featured house beer. It was none other than….

Pabst Blue Ribbon.

Not one, but two large beer tappers dispensed the plebian suds that

Dennis Hopper immortalized in the film “Blue Velvet.”

While over 20 years ago, I suspect that Hopper’s famous utterance was the beginning of what has now snowballed into the anti-premium beer movement.

So much for the hand-crafted micro-beers that were all the rage just a few years back, or the six dollar-a-pint foreign beers that wrested market share away from the domestic beer brands. Today’s urban hipsters thumb their noses at the effete beer snobs of recent years and proudly side with Joe Six-Pack when it comes to quaffing suds.

Although PBR is drinkable and to their credit they did earn a Gold Medal for their brew—albeit in 1896, the new taste in beer is on a downward spiral. Cheap swill is suddenly chic. The more devalued a beer brand you drink the more street-cred you earn amongst your peers.

It’s too bad the once mighty domestic beer brands didn’t see this contrarian trend coming. Despite all their resources, their best response to beat-back the microbrews and imports was to make commercials that basically said something like: “despite what your taste buds tell you, we actually do make a quality product.”

Instead, to better corral new legions of beer drinkers, what the domestic brands should be saying is:

“Do you value your hard-earned money over your brain cells?”

Do you long to spend your day seated on the porcelain throne instead of the La-Z-Boy?

Do you prefer a hangover as excruciating as a closed-head injury?

Then it’s time you took a step down and enjoyed some Milwaukee low-end.”

Once, the dichotomy was fairly fierce: high-brow or low-brow. If you wanted low you did Jalan P Ramlee’s many … institutions. Beach Club, Rum Jungle and the like. And if you wanted something higher end you did the hotel bars, Zeta Bar or Luna. Where is the god of moderation and subtly here?

Then came Asian Heritage Row and changed that equation by giving a whole handful of great clubs that a slightly more sophisticated clientele could choose from and yet a good healthy dose of what matters, wink wink. While CBB (Changkat Bukit Bintang) has stolen a bit of AHR’s thunder, there are a few places that come in and surprise. Think Sebastian Haegel’s Space or William Ng’s Asian Heritage Mansion.

In that tradition of (possible) surprise a new venue, Blanc Le Club, has come in (taking over from failed Atrium) and fits a cosy niche for EDM lovers, something that works very well as a weeknight club and delivers good music.
Though the music policy is still trying to find its feet there are some encouraging signs that bode well (bring back Ray Soo!) as does the overall interior, a coolly lit space of white that works. But alas the city is very much awash in similar venues, Blanc Le Club will have to work hard to get their footing. But if they do provide that very French idea of weekday clubbing – going down at 10pm and hanging with friends for a few hours while listening to some groovy tunes – they could secure a spot in the clubbing hotspots of the city.

But don’t let your hang-ups prevent you from checking out Bayernhaus. In spite of being relatively new in the Klang Valley (it only opened in February), it’s already set to introduce its brand of Oktoberfest in mid-September, and you can enjoy the ‘seasonal’ Oktoberfest beer offered here only once a year. Isn’t this incentive enough for drinkers who’re constantly seeking the novelty of the new to count the days and look forward to an orgy of boozers merrily toasting away in unison? Or if you’re the sort who lives to drink for the moment, make your way here pronto, and enjoy the all-day-long happy hours (11.30am-11.30pm, daily except Sun). Just as well that Bayernhaus does not offer entertainment, as drinkers wouldn’t give an arse about music; instead copious amounts of golden liquid can be had on the cheap(er) and that’s what matters.

As Bayernhaus is the only outlet specialising in offering Paulaner beers (made using well water running underground the brewery in Munich, which explains the clear, distinct and crisp taste), I’d recommend the Wheat Beer Natural with a smooth taste. It’s one of the few varieties served on tap (RM25+ per glass) from five-litre barrels (most other beer choices here are served in bottles). Notably, after downing it the brew doesn’t leave bad breath as compared to the aftertaste of mass-produced lagers. Among all the Paulaner beer choices available here, the most potent (at 7.9 per cent alcohol content) is the Salvator (RM18+ per bottle). Don’t let its light taste fool you; after the second round, it’ll surely bring the red on the faces of unseasoned drinkers.

Another must-have is the ‘seasonal’ Hacker Pschorr Animator offered here once a year in March. Not many nightspots in Malaysia offer this, which is just too bad, as seasoned drinkers will surely enjoy its strong roasted malt flavour.

Open time: Mon-Sat, 11.30am-11.30pm

Who would have thought that wines and the pool bar concept would go well together? Well, for this, you have to give props to this nightspot. Thankfully not a greasy, stained, hole-in-the-wall joint, this place is rather clean and well maintained. The interior – lit by fluorescent lights – has no fancy decor or fixtures; instead all you’ll find are five well maintained American pool tables (and some bar tables and chairs for customers to kick back) occupying the space within. Like a typical pool joint, the pace here is laid back where customers bond over shooting balls. Games can be had for RM21++ per hour. Unfortunately, if you’re intending to spend hours playing pool, don’t expect to get any discounts or rebates off the hourly going rate. Tough.

Where does the wine element fit into the scheme of things? Just head to the back section of the outlet where the small dedicated wine section is located. Over 50 wine labels from France, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina and Chile, among others, are available for enthusiasts. Do note that you’re only allowed to order by the bottle (costing RM80 upwards), and not glass. The exception is the house pouring (RM18++ per glass), with the variety of labels changed every two months to offer the novelty of the new. And on a monthly basis, you can also have the wine of the month deal at a special price (which varies according to the type of wine). Whatever it is, it’s just as well the wines are sold by the bottle, as you can enjoy them with your friends over rounds of pool. Just make sure you stay sober enough to aim right when hitting the balls.

If the drinks are more your concern than the game, perhaps you’ll want to take note of this deal: buy two bottles of wine and enjoy a five per cent discount when ordering the third bottle. For those who reckon that playing pool and having wine at the same time is just wrong – too fancy, or for pansies, perhaps? – be heartened to know that beer is also served here. If you use some common sense, you’ll choose the right time to head over and enjoy the happy hours deal (daily, 4-8pm): RM70++ for two jugs (normal price RM40++ per jug). With the spare change, you can pay for an extra hour or two of pool. Besides, this is the main reason you’re coming here in the first place.

Open time: Open daily, 4pm-12midnight.
Address : Wine @ Nine, C-1-9, Plaza TTDI, Jalan Wan Kadir 3, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur

Fancy a hearty old fashion English fare? Then don’t give The Green Man a miss. Named after a legendary English character that is said to bring luck, it is one of the most popular local pubs Kuala Lumpur. The Green Man offers a wide range of British pub cuisine with much of its ingredients being flown in from around the globe on a weekly basis. And it’s all affordably priced. The old tavern like atmosphere will certainly make you stay there longer than you really meant to.

The former Regent Hotel’s architectural styles may have looked outdated, but the edifices themselves have not been rendered redundant. Instead, carefully renovated, refurbished and renamed recently as the five-star Grand Millennium Kuala Lumpur — Millennium & Copthorne Hotel’s flagship property in Malaysia, and the first ‘Grand Millennium’ hotel in the world.
Located in the heart of KL’s Golden Triangle, guests won’t have to look far to find shopping and partying at various entertainment outlets in the area.

Inside the Grand Millenium itself there is the recently opened high-end Pulse club. Guests can choose from enjoying the club’s al fresco section’s cool ambience, or unwind to dance beats at the bar, lounge area or dance floor, which can accommodate up to 200 people. Word is clearly spreading as even though it is a new venue, this capacity has certainly been appoached in recent weekends.

Guests enter Pulse via a see-through elevator surrounded by a seemingly endless line of wine racks, providing a spectacular if confusing backdrop.

At the bar and lounge area, the main stage is set against a backdrop of LED panels. Scans, moving heads, and special lighting effects are everywhere. A projection system also assaults your eyes, whether you are visiting or even down on Jalan Bukit Bintang. And if you haven’t got a headache already, there are also glaring neon tables in the club.

There is, thankfully, an option for those not so keen on neon lights and glaring edifices. In the corner of the club is the Champagne Lounge — a more intimate venue for private dining. Younger guests will doubtless enjoy the loud, bright bar and lounge, but the Champagne Lounge is indisputably for a more mature audience. There is also a cigar lounge for connoisseurs to indulge their habit and sample the fine range of single malt beverages, the largest in Kuala Lumpur.

Top bands, celebrity DJs, and live comedy acts provide entertainment and there is also a handful of in-house DJs that spin during happy hours.

I had been there several times before I actually knew the name of the place. It didn’t seem important. All that mattered was that I could get a good chicken dinner there. So I called it “the chicken place.” I would usually wander over with my friend, Nick after spending time next door at The Bourgeois Pig. We’d sip our lattes and cappuccinos, futz around on the net and then when it was evening, walk over. There was no plan, it was just understood.

This rotisserie chicken place on Franklin Avenue in L.A. is usually crowded, both for indoor and outdoor seating. The low-lit dining room with its tables, booths and red and black decor is inviting. Those who stop in to drink more than eat like to cluster around the bar… especially while rooting for their favorite football or basketball team on the overhead television screen. Nick and I prefer an outdoor table under the white Chinese lanterns, if we can get it. The curb side patio is less crowded and has a laid-back feeling, even with street traffic whizzing by.

One night as we sipped our dirty martinis and dipped our chicken parts into our respective chipotle and garlic sauces, we realized exactly where we were. We were sitting at Birds Cafe. Okay, I had seen the name above the bar, but thought it was just something kitschy. I had also never noticed the name right on the outdoor awning. When it’s late and you’re hungry, trust me, that’s the last thing you’re looking at. We also never saw the name on the menu. Who needs a menu when you order the same thing every time. But that particular night I decided I would write about this hipster cafe. So I did some investigating. I asked our server.

Birds Cafe. Of course, the name made perfect sense now that I thought about it, and not just for the obvious reason. There were hints all over the place… a poster of Alfred Hitchcock from the movie, The Birds hangs on one wall while a poster of a large chicken hangs on another. The restrooms are labeled, Hens and Roosters and there is a human-sized bird cage dangling from the ceiling to the right of the bar.

I could have been just as happy in my oblivious state, but I have to admit, it’s nice knowing the name. It makes the restaurant that much more interesting with its kitschy Asian-bird decor. So if you’re looking for an offbeat place to go for dinner, you might want to try Birds… the place I still fondly refer to as you know, the chicken place.

When CityNorth opened about a year ago in north Phoenix, it had upscale shopping, hip cutting-edge people moving into the loft spaces, and the anticipation of larger shops. But the most exciting things were all the new restaurants. One of the most exciting was 25 Degrees, an ultra-glam-vintage-modern burger bistro that mixes gourmet techniques into the best comfort food around.

They have four burgers that they’ve crafted brilliantly, ranging from their “number one” (caramelized onion, gorgonzola, crescenza, bacon), to the “number three” (mezzo secco jack, green chili, chipotle, avocado), and their “number four” with yellowfin tuna has sent people swooning.

But those daring to create their own are rewarded with the best-of-the-best choices in meat (sirloin, turkey, veggie), and their cheese selection is more extensive than most wine bars, and is from all over the world. Paired with one of their 14 homemade sauces, you really can’t go wrong.

I will mandate you to get their onion rings, though, which are hand battered and dipped and yes, there is a difference. My main problem when I go is deciding burger or non-burger, since their grilled three cheese sandwich or their fried egg sandwich really rocks my world.

For the beverages, a man from Chicago said it was the best Guinness milkshake he’s ever had anywhere. I was too glued to my chocolate malt to pull myself away. Another option is their PBR on-tap, a patron’s favorite.

All-in-all, it’s a must-go. (And a must-stuff-your-face.)
