Eric Burdon började som frontman i Animals och förde namnet vidare även efter 1966, då originaluppsättning skildes åt. Burdon började då allt mer att nära sina drömmar om psykedelia. Bort från House Of The Rising Sun och beatlesfrisyrer.

My Boyfriend’s Back, Hang On Sloopy).

Eric Burdon & War – Paint It Black (The Black-Man’s Burdon, 1971)

Bangkok Post

The first item on the agenda is to fill in the gaps between September 2008 and September 2009, before I will start writing about more timely stuff, as and when it happens. I will be concise, because 12 months is a long time to chronicle, and will perhaps return to certain points in more detail at a later date.

I work for the Bangkok Post, the leading English-language newspaper in Thailand. I edit the stories, which are mostly written by Thai reporters. They write in English, to varying standards, but require native speakers to polish their work to native quality. It’s essentially the same role as a sub-editor on any newspaper back home, but with the added task of dealing with non-native English. Sometimes it’s easy, sometimes it’s difficult, but it’s a rewarding job with nice hours on a publication that has a good reputation and a nationwide readership. In that regard, it’s the best job I’ve had so far.

I started out on the national news desk. This is the “front end” of the newspaper and therefore the most prestigious. It was a great start and also an invaluable experience for me in my formative months in Thailand, as it helped me get up to speed on Thai politics, business, geography and so on. It was a nightshift, which a lot of people don’t like, but which suited me because I’m not a morning person! Also it was nice to have the majority of the daytime to myself.

But six months later I was asked if I’d be interested in a move to the features department. The Real Time supplement, which covers arts and lifestyle, and Database, which covers IT, were short-staffed, so I agreed to the move, because while I did enjoy the newsdesk, I figured experience on other sections would further boost my CV. Furthermore, it’s a Monday-Friday role during normal office hours, which means I get normal weekends and evenings off. No, I still don’t like getting up in the mornings, but the upside is that my social schedule now falls in line with most other people’s – including my girlfriend’s.

Director: Ragnar Bragason
Year: 2007

Næturvaktin is a very pleasant surprise indeed. 99% of the world’s sitcoms seem like Xeroxed updates of shows that were pretty dull back in the Seventies or, almost as bad, are progressive thinking in concept but rely on the same base attributes of canned laughter, implausible set pieces and plain banality.

Therefore, how will a relatively low budget comedy from Iceland – a nation that seems to have its own very distinctive sense of humour – fare?

The cast of Næturvaktin

The basic premise feels like a rough hybrid of Ricky Gervais’ The Office with Clerks. It revolves around the every day (well, night) antics of a disparate collection of Shell petrol station employees. Georg (series co-writer Jon Gnarr) is the station’s dictatorial superviser whose left-leaning politics and overly pedantic management style causes much strife to colleagues and customers alike. Despite his evident education, Georg’s academia has failed to translate to efficient business management.

The bulk of Georg’s domination falls heavily on the shoulders of Olafur (Pétur Jóhann Sigfússon). Olafur isn’t the brightest or most dedicated of employees yet he has big dreams; most notably to take the local band that he “manages” to international stardom.

Completing this motley crue of minor misfits is Daniel (Jörundur Ragnarsson). Capable, personable and quick to learn, he’s the best of a dubious bunch but why exactly is he working there? An estranged girlfriend and a disapproving family suggest a bigger story…

Awesome advert for the show, plundered from Ragnarsson's Myspace

On first impressions, Næturvaktin is almost too uneventful to work as a comedy. Little happens and when it does it happens slowly, with the station’s lack of custom matched only by the inactively of its staff. The dull buzz of the shop’s strip lighting dominates the still atmosphere. Barely a single scene across all twelve episodes escapes the triumvirate of regular sets; the forecourt, the shop, the back office.

And yet slowly it somehow works. It’s not generic comedy by any stretch yet neither does it push conventional boundaries. The average episode starts with a philosophical quote and builds into a succession of low key scenes. Thankfully elements of the narrative gradually interweave to create that ominous, dreaded sense that something farcical is about to happen – better still, it’s usually crafted with enough skill to provoke surprise rather than ignite disdain at its sheer predictability.

As with any great comedy, the strength of the secondary characters is almost as vital as the strength of the leads. Georg’s ex-wife and son, for example, both feel like full rounded characters rather than mere tools utilised to accentuate Georg’s curmudgeonly nature. Throughout the series the sense of characterisation is acutely constructed with each role a stereotype delicately crafted into an individuality that builds a palpable feeling of reality.

Naeturvaktin issues are minor and indeed barely noticeable. The celebrity cameos are unlikely to mean anything to an international audience and Georg’s make-up isn’t entirely convincing – although admittedly Gnarr is a good ten years younger than Georg. Consequently they fail to distract from a series less like the preconception of a Clerks / Office hybrid and more like a clash between the social inadequacy of Peep Show and the master crafted narrative of Fawlty Towers.

And just like Jar City, Næturvaktin has been picked up for the American remake treatment.

It’s been a while since my last post. I just didn’t feel like making a new one. For some reason I actually still don’t, but just because I have nothing else to do at the moment I’ll make a quick one =)

I could tell a lot about my time in Turkey, but I’m not gonna. Not this year. The holiday was great. Best time ever but that’s all I wanna share.

After the holiday I had a course about documents and stuff. It was quite cool and I learned a lot. I also had an exam, but I don’t know the result yet. I should hear it next week I guess. The course was 4 days and after it I had to work 2 days again. In other words… I had to work 6 days in a row. I just had 2 days off and tomorrow I have my first out of 3 Nightshift =)

Well for now that’s basically all I have to say. Maybe later when I’m the ‘old‘ Lisa again, I’ll add daily posts.

Good Night,
Peace x

I am still busy working on Igi’s TV. I will put it on the server tonight and tomorrow the site is to be indexed at Google. For sure, I would like to launch a lot of pages already, but it is better for the search engines to add every day a page, so the site looks as developing step by step. During the next two weeks (until the next new moon ) I will add all the articles and partner pages so the whole site can do its job. Means today is kind of silent beta test pre-launch and in two weeks we will blow the horn to let everybody know.

Gotta go to continue – Tonight I am on a night shift… this actually recalls one of my favorite songs of the eighties (unbelievable this song is already 24 years old – it feels like yesterday)….
A couple of nice reviews from our recent performance at the Oxford Punt festival… there’

A couple of nice reviews from our recent performance at the Oxford Punt festival… there’s also a half page feature on us in the new issue of Oxford’s music magazine Nightshift.

‘From Light To Sound might have an Oxford track record between them that rivals Roger Bannister’s, but that’s no guarantee of greatness. Except tonight it is. The Cellar’s engineer has given them a huge sound and their music simply soars across a packed venue, all Explosion in the Sky grandeur, Billy Mahonie twistiness and Stereolab intelligence. And they have some proper bleepy noises – when the keyboards aren’t coming on like ELP filtered through Battles, that is. Despite a few mistakes and technical glitches their set flashes by in an instant and the euphoric effect of it stays with us all night.’ – Nightshift

‘A successful gig is as much about right-time-right-place as it is the technical merits of the music, and although in conversation afterwards From Light to Sound reveal they aren’t entirely happy with what they produced, their enormous sound gave a much-needed boost to some flagging reviewers. Their music is as rich, textured and guitar-heavy as the members’ reputations would suggest, and is burgeoning with playful and intelligent ideas. It is at turns brutal, ethereal, and bludgeoningly funky – a stunning and uplifting mixture of intimate soundscapes and ballsy bombast. Never, however, does it stray towards pomposity – all the tunes are just too enthusiastic and exuberant for that. Tonight’s set was a genuine Punt treasure.’ – www.oxfordbands.com

The weekend was good in a relaxed way. On Friday I went to a meeting with the manager of Jet nightclub which bombed btw then proceeded to get moderately trashed at The Manor. I was with the nightshift guys (making-out-with-a-girl-guy and his friend) and after watching them exchange glances all night and basically treat me like crap I decided to leave them to their negative selves and just get loaded with the manager. It kind of hurt that they were being so blatantly rude.. like they were entertaining eachother by putting me down. What can I do though? I chose to fuck off.

On Saturday Matt and I went to a few garage sales and picked up a stack of records for $10 and a bunch of fabric and craft supplies. I ended up making earrings. They took me four hours and six thousand beads all over my hardwood floor but in the end it was all worth it. I’m addicted to jewellery making. Unfortunately I’m allergic to everything. Metal, dust, apples, peaches, nectarines, STRAWBERRIES, dogs. Yeah.. you know that loser kid in kindergarten with a runny nose and the asthma inhaler? That’s me.

Time and money must be the same thing. Think about it: if you’ve got more money, then you can

Time and money must be the same thing.

Think about it: if you’ve got more money, then you can buy more time, and if you’ve got more time, then you can make more money. I think there is a direct relationship here that could lead to the conclusion that these two concepts mean the same thing. Time and money could just be two different terms for power.

I’m in a position to hold this belief because I’m running out of these things these days — or nights. When I whip out my wallet to buy “budget meals” at Balog’s carinderia, I notice the thickness of paper bills there getting dangerously thin. After such instances, I usually remember that I have to work on my “freelance articles” immediately to make more paper bills next time; but then I remember that I also don’t have much time because I’ve got other priorities; sleeping and love life, for example (and I won’t compromise those easily).

And then there are also times when I need more time to work on the Web comic that I’m drawing for ages, but I can’t fit it anywhere in my schedule. Concentrating on two different things at night is really difficult, thanks to the unnatural settings of my body clock. Then I realize, if I were filthy rich right now, I can quit all my jobs and just go nuts drawing this Web comic forever. I could invest in something ambitious and put all my energies developing my art. But that’s not possible since I only have enough money to buy a short period of time for leisure and creativity.

Working hard for money also means working hard for time. Now that I’m trying to be a Senior Writer by writing ridiculously difficult stuff, I have to throw away all inhibitions and just accept my dark fate as a night shift employee. I don’t have “tomorrows” anymore, just a couple of hours before work starts again.

I’m crossing one day to another, pushing the night to its death and the day to its birth while hoping that I’m also pushing the contents of my wallet to grow overnight.

When you’ve got so much of these two resources, they eventually disappear from your life. People who have so much money can buy so much time that the pressure to fit things into schedules evaporates in the air. Money ceases to become an issue, as well as time. Of course, there’s always the issue of how to make that money grow, but the funny thing is, you can buy people who will worry about that issue. Curiously, you set yourself free from time and money only when you have colossal quantities of them.

Indeed, the most powerful men don’t feel power at all. Power is natural to them, like their noses and eyes. Only people who don’t have enough are sensitive of power. To add another metaphor, beautiful people don’t feel beauty. Only people who are not beautiful enough are aware of its existence. Freedom means excess.

Time can be bent by money through various means. Rich folks pay for vitamins, good food, clean environments to live in, cosmetics and surgical procedures to bend time to their will. I bet when cryonics becomes possible, the wealthiest on earth will be the first ones to achieve some kind of physical immortality, erasing time altogether.

But that’s stretching the possibilities a bit too far. Right now, I can only observe that I need more time and money in order to keep on living sanely. Which reminds me, you can also set yourself free from time and money through madness and death — another identical concepts.

it’s not really banging type loud, just a continuous whooshing sound but i did work last night and they pretty much right under my bedroom window…i woke up at one point wondering about what her water bill is going to be this month…

despite it all i did sleep really good, and she is such a nice lady…and most of her 9 sons are really nice..although i think i’ve only met 4 or 5 of them…can you imagine 9 sons…no daughters??? she still signs her christmas cards from “tess and the boys” …cute!

night shift was quiet and relaxing two nurses are just back from holidays all tanned and relaxed. one went to new zealand and the other barbados….lots of people have died at work so it’s kind of nice to have new faces. i am really not up to the futility of this job anymore. i know a lot of people do survive,….well, survive ITU but for what really?i saw a former patient on the ward yesterday and he looked as depressed and miserable as ever… i wish we had a crystal ball and could see who really has a chance to have good quality of life, concentrate on them and stop torturing the rest…because don’t fool yourself most of what we do is torture.

like sleep for instance, basic function of life, right??? a notoriously hard thing to come by in the ITU. lack of sleep, real natural sleep is common in ICU…and it leads patients to all kinds of craziness…..it even has a name, ICU psychosis. imagine that just as you finally fall asleep, someone presses a loud buzzer near your head…and then 30 minutes later when you finally calm down and doze off again….repeat the buzzer…hour after hour, night after night….no wonder the patients get anxious and paranoid

Torture

Sleep deprivation is used as an interrogation technique (for example, in Pinochet-era Chile[citation needed], the Soviet Union[citation needed], or by the US on Guantanamo-held prisoners[28]).[29] Interrogation victims are kept awake for several days; when they are finally allowed to fall asleep, they are suddenly awakened and questioned. Menachem Begin, the Israeli prime minister from 1977-83 described his experience of sleep deprivation when a prisoner of the KGB in Russia as follows:

In the head of the interrogated prisoner, a haze begins to form. His spirit is wearied to death, his legs are unsteady, and he has one sole desire: to sleep…Anyone who has experienced this desire knows that not even hunger and thirst are comparable with it.[citation needed]

In 2006, Australian Federal Attorney-General Philip Ruddock argued that sleep deprivation does not constitute torture. [30] In rats, prolonged, complete sleep deprivation increases both food intake and energy expenditure, leading to weight loss and, ultimately, death.[31] Nicole Bieske, a spokeswoman for Amnesty International Australia, has stated, “At the very least, sleep deprivation is cruel, inhumane and degrading. If used for prolonged periods of time it is torture.”

i rest my case…and that’s without the lines, tubes, underlying pain and discomfort, loneliness, lack of familiar surroundings and human touch….it’s no wonder some patients just want to hold my hand and not let go….

i’m off next week and planning to concentrate on this interview and other things…i have a small glimmer of hope…not great confidence…just slightly hopeful~~~~

As I’m writing this sentence, I still have three more hours to go before I can finally go home

As I’m writing this sentence, I still have three more hours to go before I can finally go home. It’s 3:00 in the morning here in Ortigas.

It’s my first night ever as a lucky, employed guy on a night shift. This is the joker card that I lay on the table in this poker game with the devil of global recession. I couldn’t do night shifts before but I’m doing them now. Yeah, f*ck recession. Here’s my card. Read it: “night shift.”

One can’t be too choosy nowadays — or nowanights. It seems that the company can’t get day shift clients for me, so they sent me to the dark. Now I’m on the dark side, the shadows, the eerie, scary, bone-chilling graveyard shift.

Forgive the flowery language. It’s the only thing that my mind can manage at this level of sleep deprivation. This shift is hard. My body is only supporting my soup-like brain because I’m energized by an unworldly fuel of mush. If not for these transcendental feelings of lightness and optimism, my face would now be scraping this greasy keyboard.

The keyboard’s greasy because my mouth is automatically gorging on PeeWee, an all-Filipino junkfood. Went to the bathroom two hours ago and noticed that my left eye was already bloodshot. My thoughts are as sharp as a chubby chin and my body feels like Baguio beans. I don’t even know what that means. Who cares? I’m a sleepy bastard on a night shift.

Did you know that it’s both acceptable to type night shift and nightshift? Bet you didn’t.

Do you know that you’ll also go on night shift if it means that you’ll probably get promoted and earn a much higher salary? I bet you do.

This body is but a tool to make itself survive. It will choose to punish itself if it means it’ll have something in its hungry belly tomorrow morning. Night shift is nothing because I need money. I can’t allow myself to become a part of the mass of people roaming jobless on the face of the earth. There’s no doubt now that this is a dog-eat-dog world. I’ll be living on my own carcass in the near future, feeding on my fluid-drained, double-dead, tired meat. Blunt eh? Told you my mind is as sharp as a chubby chin. Whatever.

If I pass the day-time client’s interview tonight, then I’ll be writing resumes for people I don’t know. That, by the way, means big bucks.

The client hasn’t yet replied to my e-mail as the hour comes to a close, however. This could mean that I’ll be back to being a normal daytime wanderer soon. Of course, that would also mean I’ll be jobless. I’ll be hunting for jobs again, figuring out how to send people to school, how to maintain the KFC fries addiction, and how to support my money-munching romantic relationship (all romantic relationships are money-munching).

Too many possibilities. My soup-like brain can’t process them.

It’s 3:50. Cocks are crowing in our backyard. Gotta get up and eat lunch.

The delightfully beautiful and charming Michelle Doherty who hosts the Channel 6 music show Nightshift will no longer be sending men into a stupor on their couches telling us about new bands in her soft Malin accent. Channel 6 are axing the popular show.

C6 which has been bought by TV3, is being strangled to death. Shows like Nightshift are what most people consider to be well produced worthwhile home produced TV, giving aspiring presenters, researchers and producers a step up and a way into the industry. TV3 will most likely take the freshness and creativity out of C6 and stick it in the green bin out back. The founders of C6 may have planned this along for all I know but it’s still a real pity.

So what’s Michelle to do now? Well there’s only one thing for it really. She may as well settle down, marry me and pop out a couple of sprogs. I can even speak Irish in a Donegal dialect, that’s got to count for something right? And I can also say “wild craic”. I even went to college up there for a bit and have been on the lash in Glenties a few times and had pint or four in the Cope bar. That’s got to be enough to win her over!
