If they are going to attack him for bowing to foreign leaders, they really need to work on getting rid of all the photos and video of Republican President’s doing exactly what they are accusing President Obama of doing.

Ultra-right wing internet news outlet Newsmax had a screaming headline “No American President Ever Bowed to a Foreign Leader — Until Now”. TheFoxNation brays “Should a U.S. President Ever Bow to a Foreign Leader?” Fox News has been questioning bowing all day, with Fox and Friends anchor Steve Doocy, idiotically parroting right-wing blog Hot Air, that “in 230 years since the country was founded in 1776, that no other U.S. President has ever bowed to a foreign leader“.

Come on now! These right-wing folks are making it way too easy. My Google and Wikipedia are in for some fun. I’ll start chronologically, and leave President Bush for last.

A September 2, 1959 Associated Press photo shows President Dwight Eisenhower bowing his head while meeting French President Charles De Gaulle. The caption of the photograph read: “President Dwight Eisenhower bows as he acknowledges speech of greeting by French President Charles De Gaulle on his arrival at Le Bourget near Paris on Sept. 2, 1959. Between the two chief executives is Ludovic Chancel, French Chief of Protocol.”

We also have a photo of President Eisenhower and First Lady Mamie looking pretty chummy with Nikita Khrushchev and his wife Nina at a state dinner in September of 1959. Khrushchev’s US visit resulted in an informal agreement with President Eisenhower that there would be no firm deadline over Berlin, but that there would be a four-power summit to try to resolve the issue, and the premier left the US in general good feelings.

This February 1972 photo shows President Richard Nixon bowing to Japanese Emperor Hirohito. You know, the guy who ordered the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor? Under his orders, on December 7, 1941, Japan struck the US Fleet in Pearl Harbor and began the invasion of Malaysia. At the end of the American occupation of Japan, Hirohito was prepared to apologize formally to U.S. Gen. Douglas MacArthur for Japan’s actions during World War II – including an apology for the attack on Pearl Harbor. MacArthur refused to admit him or even acknowledge him.

In February 1972, President and Mrs. Nixon traveled to China, where the president was to engage in direct talks with Communist Party Leader, Mao Tse-Tung. Yes, the same Mao who is Glenn Beck’s favorite boogy-man . Here is a photo of President Nixon shaking hands and grinning at Mao on February 29, 1972.

Last but not least, we have the hand-holding and cheek-kissing President George W. Bush. On a April 2005 visit to the President’s ranch, Saudi Prince Abdullah is greeted with a kiss on both cheeks and taken by the hand to the house. Como sabeís los primeros dias no fueron mal del todo, Nikita hablaba casi todos los dias por teléfono con su madre y aunque esta le explicaba que volvería y trataba de consolarlo, era inevitable que llorara. Seguía con su rutina a la hora de irse a la cama, doblaba el pequeño pañuelo que le había dado su babuska, abuela, y lo metía debajo de la almohada. Le daba un beso  al pequeño crucifijo que tenía como colgante y por supuesto seguía sin querer cambiarse de ropa…

Así fueron pasando los primeros dias hasta que llegó, creo recordar que fué el segundo fin de semana, el viernes que era el dia en el que ibamos a ir a pasar el fin de semana a Oiartzun. Era una de las actividades que organiza la asociación Chernobil elkartea con el objetivo de juntarnos las familias y que los niños puedan también reunirse y jugar entre ellos. Ya por la mañana Nikita se despertó con algo de fiebre, pero no parecía preocupante. Como no se le bajaba le llevamos por la tarde al ambulatorio y la medico nos confirmó que tenia anginas. Le preguntamos si podíamos ir al albergue de fin de semana y nos dijo que sí. Le dimos el antitérmico y nos fuimos para Oiartzun.

LLegamos un poco antes de cenar y Nikita no solo seguía con la fiebre sino que esta iba aumentando y no paraba de llorar. Entre el dolor que sentía y yo creo que tambíen la angustia que tenía de encontrarse en un sitio extraño y faltandole su familia, la cosa iba cada vez peor. Preguntamos a los veteranos y nos tranquilizaban diciendo que era normal… que todos habían pasado por esa situación y que no nos preocuparamos…. Pero nosotros nos poníamos en el lugar de Nikita, con cuatro años, fuera de su casa, en sitio extraño, con una familia desconocida….. y tambíen nos angustiamos.

Aunque habíamos pasado por situaciones parecidas en cuanto a enfermedades con nuestras hijas y sabíamos que no era grave, para Ana y para mi fué una de las noches más angustiosas en mucho tiempo.

Fué en este momento cuando aparecieron los demás niños y niñas,ucranianos y vascos, le arroparon como si fuera un hermano suyo. Para nosotros fué uno de los momentos de solidaridad más preciosos. Trataban de consolarle regalandole sus juguetes preferidos y es que además eran todos haciendo una piña a su alrededor, tanto niños mayores como pequeños. Allí estaban Irina, Nastia, Iratxe, Vladimir, Antxon, Alexei Uxue…y muchos más. A todos ellos: Mila esker !

Como se suele decir ” después de la lluvia sale el sol “. Al dia siguiente la fiebre ya había remitido y pudimos disfrutar de una bonita excursión  al monte.Os dejo el video

En realidad solo  fué angustiosa una noche pues el resto del fin de semana fué magnifico, además Vladimir consiguió convencer a Nikita que se cambiara de pantalones.

Remember when Jean Reno was ultra cool? Back in the days of Nikita, Leon (The Professional) and maybe a bit of Ronin. Then he went on to make films such as Godzilla, The Pink Panther and…well after the Pink Panther I need say no more.

Well it looks as if he is heading back to the good times with L’immortel, or 22 Bullets, a cool sounding gangster revenge style film.

Richard Berry is directing the story he adapted with Mathieu Delaporte from Franz-Olivier Giesbert’s novel.

After a long, brutal and successful career in the Marseille mafia, Charly Matteï has gone straight. For three years, he has lived a quiet life devoted to his wife and two young children. Then, one winter morning, he is left for dead on the docks of the old port with 22 bullets in his body. Somehow he survives. And goes looking for Tony Zacchia, the only man who would dare to try to kill him. Zacchia made just one mistake: he failed.

Sounds good doesn’t it. Fingers crossed we get to see Reno being balls nasty to those who deserve it.

Do you like the sound of 22 Bullets? Has anyone read the book? Will it make a good film?

Who is this jolly green giant of a man who has romanced Bali for nearly twenty years and is now falling in love again, this time with India where he had earlier spent many years hitch hiking across in the days of hippie hype, dharma bums and chillums (apologies to Jack Kerouac)?

John Pettigrew’s pedigree is unknown to many of his friends and clients and it was by accident that he let it slip the other day while we were nursing tipples and watching the sun set behind palm trees at his home in Nyuh Kuning, Ubud, Bali.

“My grandfather Professor Bell Pettigrew was a pioneer of the theory of flight and authored/illustrated many books on the subject (before the Wright Brothers). Today there is a museum dedicated to his memory at St. Andrew’s University, Scotland. The other ancestor of mine, Henry Bell, invented the first steam ship called The Comet. I wish we could do a book together on my family; I have all the original manuscripts of my ancestors’ works. What do you think?” he asked me.

The evening slide into night as the two men, one Indian and one Irish spoke passionately about preservation of cultures, languages and the environment.

Two days later we met over breakfast with his wife Anindra Novitsari and their petite six year old daughter, Nikita, to talk about his life and work. After the mandatory photo session which was gate crashed by a bevy of Bali street dogs that have adopted the family, we talked the talk.

John built the house in which we were sitting with his own hands. In the first five years there was no electricity and the toilet was a hole in the ground. Transportation then was by bicycle. His days traversing India had taught him how to survive the elements.

This green fingered Irishman’s completed works (landscape designing) as well as ongoing projects reads like a who’s who of Bali, India etc.:

Four Seasons Resort (Ubud/Jimbaran/Maldives/Singapore/Jakarta), Begawan Giri Estate (Ubud), Bulgari Resort (Bali), Bali Reptile Park (Singapadu), The Huguenot Cemetery (Ireland), Napa Valley Estate (California), Jose Grace Estate (California), Glenair Estate (Ireland), Infosys (Bangalore, India), Kabinkad Estate (Coorg, India), Ashtamudi Lake Resort (Kerala, India), Janice Girardi/John Hardy/Chris Gentry/Mark & Josie Mak/Ian Batey (Bali) are just some of the examples.

“What feeds your insatiable urge to consistently create, mould, sculptor and reenergize the environs of a given area?” I asked.

“My father, Stanley, is a well known landscape (oil) painter. In fact his work has often been auctioned at Christies. And my mother, Vera, is an author of children’s’ books. As members of the ISPCA both my parents have shared with me their intrinsic love for Nature, the outdoors and respect for all living things. I remember our home in Ireland was a shelter for stray/abused cats, dogs and donkeys. My wife and my daughter share this passion too.

My philosophy is to design the landscape of a proposed site by using as much indigenous plants so that the garden is not divorced from its surroundings. Water in the form of pools and streams is incorporated to sculptor the garden into a living, breathing entity that is fundamental to the aesthetics of Nature,” he replied.

“And your family, where do they fit in in the scheme of things?”

“John”, interjected Anindra “is a family man. Although he travels frequently to India he rushes home as soon as work is over. I first met him while working in Sales and Marketing at Begawan Giri (Como Shambala). He was the landscape designer. We feel in love but I was not too sure whether he would be a suitable husband until I met his parents in Ireland. Vera (his mother) narrated the story of John’s return to Ireland in socks after a long sojourn hiking across Europe. Apparently, he didn’t have sufficient funds to buy a much needed pair of shoes and Christmas presents for his folks. So he bought the presents and returned home wearing only socks in mid-winter. This changed my mind and I married him. But I still cannot get over the way the Irish drink (liquor). Aduh, I have never seen so much drinking on any given night. What is surprising is that everyone gets up next morning sober and are off to work as if nothing has happened. Hahahaha…”

“And you dear Nikita what do you want to do when you grow up”.

“I want to be an architect and build my own house. Also I want to have a big place to keep all animals that are hurt. To give them medicine to make them better. And to feed all those which are hungry,” said Nikita hugging her three legged Bali street dog.

“So what food do you like?”

“Soto Ayam (traditional Javanese chicken soup) and Irish apple crumble. They are so yummy,” replied the little girl.

“How do you get on with your mother in law, John?” I asked hesitantly.

“Hahahaha…when Nikita was born we had our differences on how to handle the newest member of the family. It’s the same in all cultures, there’s always a bit of sparring with the mother in law but then things settle down to a tentative truce.”

“Anindra, you and your family have been living for a long time in Bali…will this be your permanent home now?” I asked.

“No, we have been thinking of setting up another home, in India and probably Australia too. The fact is that 80% of John’s work is in India therefore it makes sense to check out these options. But Bali will always be an important part of our lives.”

“John, what are your future plans?”

“My dream is to get back to my painting. Many years ago I held exhibitions of my work in Ireland and Scotland. The other idea I have is to form a loose knit association with architects to design and build holistic centers that truly adhere to the natural elements. Presently, holistic centers in existence are not accurately harmonized with the environment i.e. architecture, building materials, landscaping, recycling, solar or wind power etc. But most importantly I want to spend quality time with the family. After all isn’t that why I am living – to make this world just a little bit cleaner, greener and wholesome?” he replied

This morning, September 19, 2009, an earthquake of the magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale hit Bali. No apparent damage has yet been reported. May be this is a wakeup call from Nature reminding us as to who is really in charge of this beautiful blue planet. Fortunately we have people like John Pettigrew in our midst who can help us in understanding the importance of preserving our environment by not polluting it with non-bio degradable waste. Ultimately it is our choice whether we want to make this planet a garbage dump or a tranquil paradise for our children.

So being home again means more blog posts, hooray! I stopped at Xtreme-Adrenaline on my through Regina the other night and Eldon passed along a copy of the new Snowboard Canada Women’s Annual to me (Thanks Eldon! ) and I’ve got to say I was super impressed by this issue compared to the past ones. There wasn’t a huge change in the amount of content or the appearance or anything, what impressed me was the actual article ideas and most notably the Step Up section. You might recall me whining about the problem’s with women’s snowboarding a while back with my post Good for a Girl. The inspiration behind that post was the SBC women’s annual trick tip, which was a 50-50 on to a rail. In this issue the trick tip (Step Up)  is a Cab 540! Hooray! Finally a trick that brings us a little bit closer to the level of trick tips that the men are always getting. Jess Kimura is the “teacher” in this one, and it’s pretty much perfect… thanks SBC for giving us something awesome this time around, I love it!

Another one of my favourite articles in the new mag is called “Defining Style.” It takes a look at the riding style of five female shredders in five different photos. Cheryl Maas, Marie-France Roy, Laura Hadar, Hana Beaman, and Desiree Melancon are all the ladies featured in this one. I really liked the idea of this one because in snowboarding your riding style is just so important. If you have a messy or sketchy style it will come through in shots or in video parts and make you look like you have no idea what you’re doing. I can think of a million examples of bad styles that I’ve seen over the years, there are lots of girls that are good riders but they just have bad style and it makes them look out of control all the time. If you don’t know what I’m talking about go watch some female video parts (think la la land, ro sham bo, or stance) and you’ll definitely be able to see the difference between the riders who are really solid and have good style and the riders who are definitely talented but are lacking in the style department. For example, when you see a shot of MFR or Laura Hadar you don’t need to see a name to tell who the rider is. Their style shows through in the shot right away! Okay anyways enough of that rant for now…
