Australian investors are also hoping that some of the local banks’ write-downs will prove excessive in the face of a shallower than expected recession, meaning that there may be the chance of extra dividend payments to shareholders.

The ASX 200 finance sub-index added 1.4 per cent, while raw materials producers added 1.3 per cent, and retail stocks picked up 1.1 per cent.

The Commonwealth Bank was the biggest gainer among the big four, picking up 1.9 per cent to $53.65 after receiving a broker upgrade from Merrill Lynch, becoming the broker’s preferred Australian banking stock.
Gold producers also continued their rise as gold hovered around record highs – Australia’s biggest gold producer Newcrest gained 2.6 per cent, while Lihir Gold climbed 1.9 per cent.

Crown built on yesterday’s strong gains, rising another 2 per cent after the company confirmed that it was indeed James Packer that had bought an additional 3 per cent of the company, taking him to the limit he can own before launching a full takeover offer.

US shares also forged higher as the market was energised by an earnings report from aluminum maker Alcoa showing a surprise return to profits.

The Alcoa report, the first from a blue-chip firm for the third quarter, offered hope that companies are regaining health as the economy improves.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average at mid-day had risen 1.04 per cent to 9827.15 while the tech-heavy Nasdaq advanced 1.00 per cent to 2126.35.

Patrick O’Hare at Briefing.com said Alcoa’s report late Wednesday “ceremoniously kicked off the third quarter reporting period. At the same time, it kicked more than a few short sellers in the mouth as the aluminum maker said mostly all the right things.”

The company said its net income was $77 million or eight cents a share in the quarter ended September, after three losing quarters.

O’Hare said Alcoa also offered an upbeat outlook for aluminum consumption, another sign of an improving global economy.

The market was also encouraged by news that initial claims for US jobless benefits in the week ended October 3 fell to a nine-month low of 521,000, another encouraging sign.

The report “reaffirms that labour market conditions are improving,” said Michael Bratus at Moody's Economy.com.

Among stocks in focus, Alcoa rallied 3.31 per cent to $US14.67, extending its rally of more than 10 per cent this week.

PepsiCo, which also reported earnings, fell 1.67 per cent to $US60.15 after the beverage and snacks maker reported a better-than-expected profit of $US1.72 billion but said it is “still feeling the pinch of the global recession.”

In London mining companies were among the day’s big winners on the back of rising commodity prices. Vedanta gained 4.04 pencent to reach 2.190 pence.

The auto sector led the way in Paris, with Peugeot adding 4.68 per cent to end the session at 21.585 euros while rival Renault gained 3.897 per cent to close at 33.625 euros.

In Frankfurt steel makers ThyssenKrupp and Salzgitter drew strength from the Alcoa results, the former adding 4.04 per cent to 23.96 euros and the latter 2.71 per cent to 68.30 euros.

Earlier in the day in Asia Tokyo’s benchmark Nikkei-225 Index closed up 0.34 per cent to 9832.47 points on Thursday after the strong yen took some of the shine off the positive lead overnight from Wall Street.

www.endhivaids.com

In the event Joe Stern-McGovern, President of Universal Artists, International, hasn’t made this point clear, in the name of the betterment of mankind, it is his intention to guide UAI into even further ventures of charity through the medium of the arts.

Coming early in 2010, please look for the World Mixtape, brainchild of Joe Stern-McGovern of UAI and Pure-Records of Tokyo fame, as well as various contacts throughout Western Europe. The agency’s coalition of sorts intends to release the mixtape, an American phenomenon which creates not only entertainment for the common man of the streets, but a vehicle for the next generation of hip hop artists to display their wares at an affordable price in the name of world health and the relief of the human condition.

www.myspace.com/blackflockgang

For further clarification of the definition of a mix tape, such as those which helped launch the careers of heavyweights such as Nelly and Ludacris, look for postings which clarify the concept from several of Universal Artists, International’s own top acts such as Mouf Piece of da City, one half of Dem Hardheadz, blood brothers, and the notorious lyricist and frontman, Mr. Hood Shuttlesworth of the FAM Boy$ out of Birmingham, Alabama.

Such concepts, as defined by authentic masters of the game, should help apply validity to Universal Artists, International’s product as one of genuine quality and true to the game. Along with the products defined, our guests to the major charitable site under construction, www.endhivaids.com, will find educational links to help increase awareness of HIV/AIDS, as well as methods of prevention and sites which to donate or participate in the uphill struggle against the disease.

The Australian share market gave up early advances to end just under 1 per cent lower.

In early trade, the market defied last night’s falls on Wall Street with the ASX 200 rising as high as 4,758 at 10:49am (AEST) before following a regional share slide this afternoon.

The benchmark index finished the day 0.9 per cent lower at 4,701, with the All Ordinaries index down 37 points to 4,702.

However, today’s falls are small in comparison to the Australian share market’s 20 per cent rise over the three months to September, and 6 per cent rise during the last month, as local equities recovered some of the massive losses incurred during the global financial crisis.

Major movers
Fortescue Metals fell 3.7 per cent to $3.68 after the company failed to meet a financing deadline, however analysts remain optimistic Fortescue will secure the billions of dollars in Chinese investment it wants to rapidly expand its iron ore output.

Industrial maintenance provider Transfield Services fell 4.5 per cent to $4.06.

Shopping centre giant Westfield slipped 4 per cent.

QBE Insurance led a 1.5 per cent slide in the financial sector – it was down 3.2 per cent.

World markets

Regional markets generally fell, following the negative lead from Wall Street and Europe. However, communism showed it can still shut down financial markets, with the Hang Seng and Shanghai exchanges closed to mark 60 years since Chairman Mao created the People’s Republic of China.

As TV Tokyo’s World Business Satellite late night news program was drowned out by the sound of my washing up, I picked up the words “Australian Central Bank” – and turned to see that the 0.25% consecutive rate rise by the Reserve Bank of Australia had indeed been picked up by the late night news team on the TV channel affiliated with Japan’s ubiquitous financial newspaper, the Nikkei (Nihon Keizai) Shimbun.

And the presenters quickly showed why – a graph of central bank (official) rates in several countries showed that Australia was well higher than Norway, the EU, and the US, which had flatlined to the same level as Japan. Hence, whether the typical reading for such a macroeconomic policy movement be to curb spending, increase investment, or prevent deflation, for investors, Australia clearly offers one of the highest cash rates among OECD countries, and one of the first to begin raising rates (at least so the WBS graph seemed to indicate).

And, while there macroeconomic policies – or at least the policies on controlling official rates – may differ, it seems that Australia (HT political fiend) and Japan may well have in common a massive blowout in the public budget. On Monday the Hatoyama Cabinet was being subjected to questions and patronising remarks by LDP lawmakers as I tried to recover from jetlag after a delayed flight from Copenhagen. I only imagined the same thing was happening in Canberra, if only I could get off the couch to switch on the live feed from parliament…

Again, the difference is that Australia’s blowout is real; the Hatoyama blowout is still only on paper, for now. But let’s not forget the LDP has rung up public debt in the neighbourhood of 200% of GDP before the DPJ took power last month.

Nikkei 225 należy do najważniejszych indeksów giełdowych w Azji.

(CFD.net.au – Contract for Difference, Share, Forex, ETFs, Commodities Traders) – The Australian share market has taken a breather to end a strong week of gains.

The All Ordinaries closed 9 points lower at 4,755, and the ASX 200 lost 0.3 per cent to end the week at 4,753.

But investors have taken heart from the interest rate rise and Reserve Bank’s upbeat analysis on Tuesday, the fall in unemployment figures on Thursday, and a report today from the World Economic Forum naming Australia as the second best financial centre in the world – although with the UK at number one and the US still third, despite subprime, it does make you wonder about what criteria it was using.

Telstra was in the news again today, submitting its response to the Federal Government’s plan to forcibly split its retail and wholesale businesses. Unsurprisingly, it is opposed to a separation, but its a battle shareholders seem to think Telstra will lose, with its shares down more than 2 per cent.

There have been reports in Fairfax media outlets that major shareholders have agreed on former Woolworths boss Roger Corbett as the company’s next chairman. Fairfax shares have closed 1.8 per cent higher, on hopes the deal will end the boardroom battles that have racked the company in recent weeks.

Financial stocks have had a pretty good day.
Gold is still hovering just under its record highs, and Australia’s biggest producer, Newcrest, has picked up 1.6 per cent on speculation that it is a takeover target for the world’s biggest goldminer, Newmont.

“The market sentiment here is likely to remain positive in line with recoveries in global markets,” said Katsuhiro Kondo, an analyst at Tokai Tokyo Securities, on Friday.

“The chances are high that the Nikkei will stay above 10,000 points as there must be more room for a rise in Japanese shares, …

“The market sentiment here is likely to remain positive in line with recoveries in global markets,” said Katsuhiro Kondo, an analyst at Tokai Tokyo Securities, on Friday.

“The chances are high that the Nikkei will stay above 10,000 points as there must be more room for a rise in Japanese shares,” which have lagged behind overseas markets recently, Kondo said.

In the week to October 9, the Nikkei-225 index gained 284.52 points, or 2.92 percent, to 10,016.39. The benchmark indicator ended above the key 10,000 point level on Friday for the first time in more than a week.

The broader Topix index of all first section shares gained 23.16 points, or 2.65 per cent, to 897.83.

“Attention will be paid to earnings results of key US firms, including Intel, to be released next week,” said Kondo.

This week’s recovery in Japanese shares was also due to a slowdown in the rapid rise in the yen’s value against the dollar.

“Players are relieved to see a stability in the dollar-yen rate, but if the yen advances further, a cautious mood may spread among Players,” said Hirokazu Fujiki, a strategist at Okasan Securities.

The market will also look to a monetary policy meeting of the Bank of Japan on Wednesday and governor Masaaki Shirakawa’s news conference.

“There won’t be any rate change this time, but we need to watch Shirakawa’s remarks on his prospect for Japan’s macro economy,” Fujiki said.

“Players will also start paying attention to the corporate performance of Japanese companies as another earnings season will begin later this month,” Fujiki said.

Gold trimmed some gains but hovered near the all-time high of $US1043.45, compounding the dollar’s woes after the US currency was hit the previous day by a report that major countries were looking for alternatives in oil trade settlement.

Oil prices rose 50 cents a barrel to $US71.38, holding on to broad gains scored the previous day as commodities surged on hopes that global demand was picking up.

Australian miners and Japanese trading houses were among the big winners, with shares of Rio Tinto up 3.8 per cent amd Mitsubishi Corp gaining 5.3 per cent.

“Resources on the whole … are leading the way on what seems to be the ever-weakening US dollar,” said David Barrett-Lennard, commodities dealer at CMC Markets.

Some investors also took heart from Australia’s central bank lifting interest rates the previous day, the first of any Group of 20 nation to do so in a sign that the emergency measures put in place to stem the financial crisis are gradually being unwound.

The move fueled gains of more than 1 per cent on Wall Street, underscoring for many that the global economy was on the mend.

However, analysts noted that Australia is a special case because its economy and banking system were mostly sheltered from the global crisis and has benefitted from China’s aggressive efforts to Stockpile resources and kick start growth.

Central banks in the West are unlikely to raise rates for some time as the strength of their economic recoveries is far from certain.

Federal Reserve officials remain cautious about unwinding emergency measures. Kansas City Fed President Thomas Hoenig said late on Tuesday that the US economy is clearly recovering but that it is too soon for the Fed to withdraw its massive support.

The MSCI index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was up 1.1 per cent, with the material sector the biggest gainer on the day. The Thomson Reuters index of regional shares edged up 0.7 per cent.

Japan’s Nikkei average gained 0.9 per cent, with financials getting a boost from a rise in US counterparts the previous day after Goldman Sachs upgraded the sector. The banking sector on the Tokyo Stock Exchange first sector rose 3.6 per cent.

Dollar on the backfoot

The dollar edged up slightly after getting hit the previous day by the combination of a surging Australian dollar, gold and commodities.

The dollar index, a gauge of its performance against six major currencies, drifted up 0.2 per cent to 76.459 but is still near a 13-month low of 75.827 hit in September.

The dollar edged up 0.2 per cent against the yen to 88.95 yen but has slid back near an eight-month low of 88.23 yen hit last month. Those levels are seen as painful to Japanese exporters by slashing the value of their overseas revenue.

Japanese Finance Minister Hirohisa Fujii told the Wall Street Journal that current yen levels were consistent with acceptable market activity and were not “extremely abnormal,” the latest signal Japan’s new government is taking a more hands-off approach on currency policy.

Fujii and other officials have made remarks suggesting they could intervene to stem yen strength, though many market players believe such intervention is unlikely unless the yen’s rise becomes more volatile.

The Australian dollar hovered near 14-month highs against the US dollar in the wake of the rate increase on Tuesday, which sent the Aussie up nearly 1.4 per cent.

Government bonds slipped on the gains in Stocks and prospect of central bank rate hikes in some countries.

Korean bond futures slipped 3 ticks to 108.72 after Australia’s rate hike was seen as paving the way for a move in South Korea where its central bank is worried about a rebounding property market.
