This year I embarked on one of the most important trips of my life: Japan. I was off to find my people. I was also traveling with my boyfriend and his family. The ultimate goal of the trip was to climb to the top of Mt. Fuji, and since we were climbing a little off season, we had to pray for good weather. We toured Tokyo, Nikko, Hakone, Kyoto and Hiroshima with GAP Adventures and then spent the last couple of days on our own in Osaka. Now what can I say other than this was the most amazing trip EVER. I absolutely love Japan and felt at home. I loved the big city vibe and style of Tokyo, the quiet shrines of Nikko, the food in Kyoto, the history in Hiroshima and the youth of Osaka. We made it to the top of Mt. Fuji, where my boyfriend proposed by the crator. The journey was surreal to say the least. I found my people, and I can’t wait to go back.

I haven’t titled a post with parentheses in a while… felt like it might be time again, for no real reason. We’ve been busy today as usual. We both have so many things and projects in various states of completion that we’re working on – I sometimes miss the feeling of working on one thing from start to finish and feeling that clean timeline of completion at the end.

Our landlord also called today, asking us to renew our lease. I’d prefer having the option of renting month to month since we’ve already been here a year now. What if something happens next spring and we’re able to buy a house while the government is still giving away $8,000 to new homebuyers? I know it’s a stretch, but it’s possible. Wow, I can’t believe how big of a difference in coloring there is between those two photos. Yikes! I’ve gotta get better at adjusting the curves and being more consistent. There’s such a huge difference between our house’s artifical lighting and the camera’s flash (I used a flash on the top pic, but didn’t on the bottom one). I did learn something neat about curves accidentally the other day though while I was trying to figure something else out: making the curves line into a gentle “S” shape on that screen usually makes things look better. And it’s true! It’ll really be a happy day when I learn enough about photography and editing to know why that is though, lol.

I woke up at about 5:00am and prepared sandwiches for my husband and I.

I asked my parents in advance, whether they would also want some sandwiches.

However they said that they had their own bread.

The sandwiches looked very delicious, however I forgot to add mixed mayonnaise with the fillings, so the taste was just bread flavor. I think that I must have been half asleep at that time.

My husband and I picked my parents up at their hotel in Shinjuku, because they are unfamiliar with big cities.

By the way, how to get to Nikko from Shinjuku is very easy. The train which connects the two cities started operation 3 years ago and the required time is only 2 hours.

When we reached Nikko, we boarded in a bus which we had reserved in advance.

The first destination was Shinkyo bridge, which stands at the entrance to Nikko shrine.

The bridge is ranked as one of Japan’s three finest bridges, however it was only constructed recently,so it was not so interesting for us.

After we visited Shinkyo bridge, we moved to the next destination.

The next destination was Kegon waterfall which is located in Okunikko.

Kegon waterfall was very beautiful, however it was too cold in Okunikko. I heard from a local person that it was the coldest day so far this Autumn.

After we appreciated Kegon waterfall, we saw a man who was selling apples in a parking area.

We tried to eat some samples. They were very sweet and delicious, so my mother and I suddenly wanted to buy them.

You may laugh, but the apples were our first souvenir.

The schedule of the bus tour was a bit tight, so the bus moved to the next destination before long.

The next destination was Futarasan shrine chugushi. We saw a traditional sacred dance which is called “Yaotome-kagura“.

Two women who appeared to both be called “Miko“, came into the sacred room and danced in front of us.

To tell the truth, I wanted to take pictures, however, nobody was taking pictures, so I gave up to take pictures.

I think that since the ceremony seemed to be sacred, the audience felt guilty about not only making noise, but also taking pictures.

After Yaotome-kagura, the shrine’s guide urged us to worship at their shrine, and all members obeyed the recommendation.

I felt strange, because nobody refused to do it.

I imagine that such a custom in which we worship at a shrine, is very common for most Japanese.

The way worshiping by all members was also correct.

The next destination was Chuzen temple, where we saw a wonderful “Tachiki-kannon” which had been carved from a still living tree.

Tachiki-kannon was very big and marvelous, so I recommend you to see it, if you haven’t already been there.

Regrettably, taking photo was not prohibited.

By the way, the temple’s guides were good salespeople. Not only their explanation about Tachiki-kannon including the history of their temple was very comprehensive, but also their sales pitch to inspire customers to buy their special charms, was excellent.

Their explanation about the benefit of the charm was very detailed, for example, someone, who had bought one, had won 630,000 yen in a lottery.

They continued to explain that if we were to rub a charm and the color changed, yellow was a lucky color.

Their explanation was too fluent so I didn’t buy it, however some participants might buy it.

The next destination was a hotel where we had lunch.

To tell the truth, the hotel’s atmosphere and the taste of the lunch was not so interesting, besides it was expensive. We had to order this lunch before we started the bus tour.

If we had the choice for our lunch, I would have researched a more interesting restaurant.

The following image is of our lunch.

After we had lunch, we got back on the bus.

On the way to Nikko shrine, we took a very famous mountain road which is called “Iroha-zaka“.

The bends of Iroha-zaka are very dangerous.

The number of the bends is 48, and the number of Japnese hiragana, for example いろはにほへと(i, ro, ha, ni, ho, he, to) is also 48, so the mountain road was named “Iroha-zaka”.

The following image is a photo which I took through the window of the bus. You must realise that Iroha-zaka is very dangerous.

To my regret, we couldn’t enjoy seeing the colored leaves, because this autumn is colder than usual, so the best season to enjoy the colored leaves had already finished.

Soon after we reached the final destination, Nikko shrine.

That area was very crowded, because it was the first day of the long weekend.

First, we visited the famous temple called “Rinnoji temple“.

Rinnoji is the most important temple in Nikko, and is the main temple of Chuzen temple.

Rinnoji is also part of the group of Nikko shrines and temples which are National Heritage listed.

Rinnoji was very big, beautiful and magnificent. However there were very persuasive staff selling the temple’s wares, wearing Buddhist outfits.

Many visitors were buying various charms.

By the way, all bus’s guide not allowed to explain about Rinnoji or Nikko shrine, so our guide was just waiting for us at a the parking area in the bus. I imagine that there must be some strict rule as to why they cannot give explanations.

After we appreciated Rinnoji, we moved to Toshogu shrine which is the most famous sightseeing spot in Nikko.

It appeared that the number of the visitors was increasing. As a result, we needed to wait for our turn to see some famous buildings and sculptures.

After we enjoyed looking around Toshogu shrine, we walked to the next destination which is called “Futarasan shrine“.

When finally the bus tour was finished, all members of my family were very tired.

Our bus guide was professional, because she had memorized all explanation of each sightseeing spot, however my father said that her explanation was a bit too much on the return journey, because many members were tired.

All members got off the bus at Kinugawa station, and went to their hotels.

By the way, I highly recommend our hotel which is called “Isshinkan“.

The dinner and breakfast were both very delicious, just as the staff of the travel agency had said they would be, when we had reserved our trip.

However the service was not so sophisticated, even though the hotel’s staff were very friendly and their hospitality was excellent.

In addition, Isshinkan is the only hotel in Kinugawa, which has “kurhaus” where people can recuperate in a hot spring.

One of the hotel’s concepts was for the guests to be able to enjoy the atmosphere of the hotel including displays of the many handmade crafts which have been made by the hotel’s staff.

We really enjoyed staying at Issinkan. It might be in my top 1 or 2 hotel in which I have stayed until now.

The following image is of the welcome tea and sweets. We could take a rest in the lobby for a few minutes.

Female guests could select one yukata and obi, and receive a tabi. This type of service is not common. If it had not been so cold outside, we would have enjoyed strolling around the hotel.

My father said that the flavor of the fish was very delicious and I agreed with him.

To tell the truth, he does not like usually fish, so it was very rare that he ate fish, even more so that he said it was delicious.

My father and I ordered some kinds of local Japanese sake, and enjoyed comparing the flavors.

Not only the fish, but also local beef and the dessert were also very delicious.

My husband and I planned a short trip with my parents, to go to Nikko and Kinugawa which are located north of Tokyo.

To tell the truth, it was our first trip to travel together as a group.

In addition, it was also the first time for my parents to travel in the Kanto region.

Since my father retired from his job this spring, my parents sometimes travel together.

However, their trips are usually just one day trips near Tokushima, where they live, because they have a dog.

Due to various reasons, my parents couldn’t stay at a hotel for more than one night for a long time.

Last Friday, my parents visited Tokyo Disney Land without me, soon after they had arrived at Haneda airport.

I remember that when I was a child, my parents and I once visited there.

However, because of heavy rain, we couldn’t enjoy it very much.

This time, the weather was fine, so my parents appeared to enjoy Tokyo Disney Land very much.

By the way, actually it was me who decided to go to Nikko, because I hadn’t been to Nikko yet.

Most people who have grown up in the Kanto region, have been to Nikko at least once.

Of course, my husband has also been to Nikko several times.

So he recommended me to reserve a bus tour, especially if I wanted to visit both Nikko and Okunikko in one day.

As a result, our trip became very enjoyable.

The next article is about our first day in Nikko.

I’ve had a hard time finding the opportunity to blog over the last couple days, and today is no exception. So, here are just a few pictures from the last 24 hours. It’s kind of hard to find interesting things to blog about when we spend 90% of our waking hours either in the shop or trying to answer emails, since I really want this blog to be more about our life and not so much about our work. Uggh – it’s frustrating!

Quick Overview

Yugawa

A nice and easy walk along a river from Lake Chuzenji 中禅寺湖 to Lake Yu 湯ノ湖. There is a lot of beautiful scenery to look at along the way like waterfalls and the marsh. It’s very popular when flowers are in season or when the leaves change in autumn. Suitable for families, as it is mostly a walk up a gentle slope, and there are many places to stop for a picnic lunch. The area also has a number of other walking trails so it’s worth picking up a map (in English) at the Tourist Information Center in Tobu Nikko Station

Distance: 8km
Duration: 2 to 3 hours
Difficulty: easy
Season: All year, however in winter the area does have snowfall.
Starting point: Ryuzu Falls/ Ryuzu-no-taki 竜頭ノ滝 bus stop
Finishing point: Yumoto Onsen

Maps

My map of the hike can be viewed at GPSies

The Mapple 山と高原地図 map series number 13, which includes Nikko and it’s surrounds, can be bought on Amazon.co.jp. Note, these maps are in Japanese, but have some English and furigana.

The Hike

Ryuzu Falls

This hike follows Yugawa 湯川 to Yunoko 湯ノ湖, and is very popular and well signed. From the Ryuzu-no-taki 竜頭ノ滝 bus stop, turn right and cross the road to get to Ryuzu Falls 竜頭ノ滝. Here there is a small restaurant and souvenir shop from where you can take a picture of the bottom of the falls. To the right is a small shrine. Take the path on the left of the shrine to follow the falls to the top. It’s not a very tall waterfall, and it should only take about 10 minutes to reach the top.

From the top of Ryuzu Falls 竜頭ノ滝, cross the road and follow the path that runs along side the river. You will be walking in a lightly wooded area for about 10 minutes, until you reach another road. Cross this road and stick to the path that runs along the right hand bank of the river. There are a couple of alternative routes from here (on the left) if you want to go to Oshirogahara Continuing on, you will walk for another 10 minutes until you reach another alternative path to Oshirogahara 小田代原 (over the bridge). Follow the sign pointing to Akanuma 赤沼 for a short distance, and you will reach another sign post.

Entrance to Senjogahara

If you turn towards Yudaki 湯滝 you will enter the Senjogahara marsh 戦場ヶ原. This portion of the walk is all board walks, and is really easy with a number of bench seats and tables along the way. It’s also super pretty! You’ll walk along the boardwalk for about 45 minutes until you reach a more wooded area and another sign post indicating another route to Oshirogahara Keep headed towards Yudaki 湯滝 and Yumoto 湯元, and after 10 minutes there will be a sign post pointing to Kotaku Pond 光徳沼. Again keep on to Yudaki 湯滝.

From this point you are leaving Senjogahara 戦場ヶ原, but will still be following the boardwalk alongside the Yugawa river 湯川. 20 minutes along the river you will reach Odaki Falls 小滝. From here you can take either path to Yudaki Falls 湯滝. The path to the left is 15 minutes, and 10 minutes to the right. At Yudaki Falls 湯滝 there is a toilet and some small shops with food. Walk up the stairs on the right side of the falls to reach the top. At the top of the falls is Yunoko 湯ノ湖. You can walk around either side of Yunoko 湯ノ湖 to reach Yumoto Onsen 湯元温泉. Both paths take 30 minutes.

Yunoko

In Yumoto Onsen 湯元温泉 the bus terminal is 3 blocks back from the lake on the largest road in town. Just turn away from the lake at the Nikko Yumoto Resthouse 日光湯元レストハウス, and you’ll see it on the right.

To and From

From Tokyo 東京 to Nikko 日光, the easiest and cheapest way is the Tobu Nikko line 東武日光線 leaving from Asakusa 浅草. The Limited Express (reserved seating) costs 2,620 yen and takes about 1 hour and 50 minutes. The Rapid train (no reserved seating) is a little longer, but cheaper, at 1,320 yen and 2 hours and 10 minutes.

If you are travelling on a JR pass, catching the Shinkansen to Utsunomiya　宇都宮, and then the JR Nikko line 日光線 to Nikko Station 日光駅 would be faster.

From either the JR or the Tobu Nikko Station 日光駅, catch the Tobu Bus that’s headed towards Yumoto Onsen 湯元温泉. The hike can be started from either the Ryuzu-no-taki 竜頭ノ滝 bus stop (as described here), or from Yumoto Onsen 湯元温泉 if you want to walk down hill. To Ryuzu-no-taki 竜頭ノ滝 it takes 70 minutes (depending on traffic) and 1,350 yen. To Yumoto Onsen 湯元温泉 takes 90 minutes and costs 1,650 yen.

If you want to spend some time in Nikko 日光 and see the sights or do more hiking, the Tobu All Nikko Pass covers the return trip from Asakusa 浅草 and all Tobu buses in a set area. It’s valid for 4 days and costs 4,400 yen. See this site for more information.

The scanner is back from the dead, so here is another older post beefed up with new pictures. Cyclin

The scanner is back from the dead, so here is another older post beefed up with new pictures.

Cycling buddy Nigel and I did a couple of rides from Tokyo over the years (if you just can’t get enough of him, fret not! He is prominently featured in Flashback #5), starting with a 400 km loop up to Nikko.

Tip#1 – if you want to ride for any distance in and around Tokyo without traffic, find a river. If you are lucky it’ll have a cycling path. We were, and this one did (Tonegawa), which was nice but it kept stopping, then starting up somewhere further down or even on the other side of the river. Anyhow, it got us up to the relative quiet of the hills on the edge of the Kanto plain. Here is Nigel at lunchtime, proving he can use chopsticks.

And our bikes at the noodle stall.

This is Toshogu shrine , part of the UNESCO-protected temples and shrines of Nikko, and the one with the ‘hear no evil, see no evil, say no evil’ monkey carving, if you’re into shrine trivia.

And a bunch of sake barrels at the same temple. I’m sure they’re used for religious purposes…

The following day we threw ourselves at irohazaka, a winding climb of 38 hairpin turns (I didn’t count…it just seems to be a well-known fact) that is steep and full of cars, but makes it all worthwhile by selling soft ice cream at the mid-way point. Here we are sweating – proof of the struggle this hill demands.

Thinking we had the worst behind us, Nigel and I relaxed at Lake Chuzenjiko, even taking time out to photograph some of those ridiculous Japanese swan boats you can find on just about any lake in the country.

But it wasn’t over. We still had another few hundred vertical meters to go up, but luckily after the lake the traffic thinned out and it was a really pleasant ride to the pass. The rest was a fast downhill to Numata City, and some re-hydration.

The following day, our last, was insane. This was a 3-day weekend and we had to get back home for work the next day. But there was a slight problem; we were very, very far away. I can’t speak for Nigel, but I was afraid to know how far exactly, so we just got up real early and blasted off towards Tokyo.

This is one of the only shots I have from that 200 km day. I look quite fresh, I think, at least when compared to the crumpled heap of jelly I was at home some 12 hours later.

Tonight Paul is working on making some keychains that we’ll be using very soon to teach a class on how to replace a wh1p’s fa11. In the picture above, he’s greasing up some brand new half-completed fa11s, and in the picture to the left he’s greasing up a long piece of lace that he’ll make into the mock keychain “points.” I’d be helping, but I still have another 2 1/2 feet left to bra1d on a ten footer I need to finish right now. I’m hoping to take some good pictures soon of a fa11 replacement (maybe even at the class) so that I can make a series of pictures with instructions for our Wh1p Blog too.

Also below is a pic I took of Nikko earlier… poor guy could barely keep his eyes open, he was so tired. When I took him for his walk this evening, we ran into another woman with a 9 month old 10lb puppy. So the pups got to play with each other for awhile while the woman and I talked dog shop – which includes bully sticks, nylabones, wheat gluten, corn, socialization, vaccinations, etc. Hahaha, it’s a good thing I can laugh at myself!

By the way, I’m still struggling with how reddish-orange everything is in pictures that I take indoors in poor lighting (like in this picture of Nikko that I took in our living room). I’ve adjusted the “curves” a bunch which makes a huge improvement over the original, but I still can’t get the color quite right that way. Maybe I need to start figuring out how to mess with the ISO settings, or maybe the lighting in our house really is just extra warm between the brown couches and carpet and wood ceiling.
