At last, news of a release we’ve been anxiously awaiting for over 6 months – Norwegian singer-songwriter and recent Wears The Trousers cover star Ane Brun will gradually roll out her first ever live DVD, Live At Stockholm Concert Hall, across Europe from September onwards. The epic 25-song concert film captures a very special show at Stockholm’s Konserthuset in September 2008 and was directed by Magnus Renfors, the man behind all of Ane’s recent music videos. Each of her albums is represented, from 2003’s Spending Time With Morgan to her most recent release Changing Of The Seasons, alongside covers of Cyndi Lauper (‘True Colors’), Alphaville (‘Big In Japan’) and St. Thomas/Thomas Hansen’s (‘Falling Down’). Hansen was a Norwegian musician who tragically died of an accidental prescription drug overdose in 2007, aged 31, and later commemorated on a tribute album.

The 1400-strong crowd at the Konserthuset were treated to a rather spectacular performance as Ane brought along several of her friends to form what she describes as “a singer-songwriter choir” – keep your eyes peeled for the likes of Anna Ternheim, Lisa Ekdahl, First Aid Kit, Nina Kinert, Tobias Fröberg and Elin Ruth, among others – and a nine-piece band including two pianists, a symphonic percussionist and an extra guitarist. It’s definitely Ane as you’ve never heard her before! And you won’t even need to be next to a telly to hear it, as Ane is releasing the film with an accompanying 18-track CD of selections from the show plus a bonus studio version of ‘My Baby’s Arms’, previously only available on Ane’s demos album Sketches. The double-disc package first arrives in Scandinavia on September 16th, followed by Germany, Austria and Switzerland on September 25th. Release dates for all other countries will be announced shortly.

Love Affair

As with all music festivals you have to make your call and pick who you want to see and forget that anyone else is playing. The three choices we made were Nina Kinert, A Camp and 2 Many DJS.  With The cardigan’s Nina Persson fronting A Camp I was telling everyone I was going to see 2 Many Ninas followed by 2 Many DJs.

And sadly the night turned out to have one too many Ninas and 2 too many Djs for my liking.

Nina Kinert and her band were magnificent. Playing songs mainly from last year’s wonder album Pets & Friends she won the audience over within the first two minutes. The band were wonderfully arresting with two drummers (playing facing each other and jumping up and down), cellist and guitar. Nina herself had her piano from which she produced spectacular arrangements for her haunting melodies. The two new songs she performed were among the highlights which bodes very very well for the next album. Loving Pets & Friends as I do I had very high expectations for the gig and I was blown out of the water – she is stunning live - a strange sweetly dark performer – not to be missed. Sigh!

A Camp were next and within minutes of them beginning I began to make shopping lists in my head. Nina P is a stunning lady with a sweet voice and it surely shouldn’t take much to stand out. Unfortunately the music they made sound woefully uninspired and generic. At one point Nina walked off stage for two minutes or so while the band played an epic intro. I can honestly say that was the most boring two minutes of live music I have ever witnessed. You could sense the disinterest from the audience and at one point Nina even remarked on how quiet everyone was. There’s a reason for that I thought as I remembered to put fresh milk on my list. Both Ninas performed in The Rotterdam Schouwburg which is a surprisingly great venue for live music.

I was quite excited about 2 Many DJs being somewhat different to what I would normally go to see. I loved the CD they brought out finding it deliciously fun, quirky and funky. I was looking forward to finally seeing a DJ play good music rather than just a boring repetitive beat over naff remixes. Unfortunately there were just like the rest – a boring persistent beat that rarely changed over unoriginal dance music. Why oh why? What’s the point? I also think it’s a bit of a scam as they were just playing CDs. Really, can’t anyone do that? And why does it take two of them to do that? It couldn’t have been further from what they presented on the CD – shame really. In addition the venue was Watt which is the old Nighttown. The dance floor was way too packed and despite a €30 fee for the festival ticket they charged €1 every time you went to the toilet. How anyone can justify that is beyond me.

Anyways, I thought I had to do a music entry for once and why not use it on teling y’all what has been in my ears lately.

The reason why I write three nordic Sirens, is that one is from Sweden, one is from Denmark and the last one… yes, you’ve guessed it, is from Norway.

From Sweden we have the lovely Nina Kinert – it’s actually 3 months since I started listening to her, but I rediscovered her when I put my ipod on shuffle. “I shot my man” and her new track “Bad Hands” are my favourites.

From Denmark it’s Oh Land – She’s been a Major hit in Denmark and hopefully she’s going abroad soon. She has potential and charisma enough to go international. “Audition day”, the hit, is the one to check out.

From Norway we have Rocketotthesky – I discovered her 3 days ago, and I havent been listening to anything else lately… it’s weird, it’s haunting and it’s fragile… I like it… ALOT! Check out “a cute lovesong” and ” the dead dead water lily thing”, Adore them.

What is great about all three is the femine nordic sound they all attack and caress… they are nothing alike, but you sense that there is something alike about them.

El pasado mes de diciembre, Informe Semanal emitía un reportaje acerca de la creciente presencia de los medios digitales en nuestras vidas. En éste se incluían algunos casos de músicos que han obtenido gran parte de su fama gracias a una adecuada presencia en Internet. Mediante el uso de este medio, el mundo está hablando un nuevo lenguaje y el ciudadano medio ha adquirido un especial protagonismo en el ámbito de la comunicación en la Red. La ‘revolución 2.0′, basada en la interactividad, ha dado voz, en definitiva, a quienes no la tenían, y ha amplificado la resonancia de contenidos que, de otro modo, no habrían llegado a un número tan elevado de personas. El mundo digital influye en nuestra vida, en nuestra forma de pensar y comunicarnos y, cómo no, también en nuestra música.

A modo de ejemplo, he aquí una lista con 10  casos significativos de canciones y músicos que han alcanzado  la fama a raíz de su aparición en Internet:

1. Russian Red

Como ya apunta el documental al comienzo de esta entrada, Lourdes Hernández, cantante de Russian Red, alcanzó la fama a raíz de unas simples grabaciones caseras y el uso de la red social Myspace para promocionarse. Actualmente, sus canciones han servido de banda sonora a las películas El rey de la montaña y Camino.

2. Nina Kinert

Esta joven sueca  inició su carrera musical en 2004, pero no alcanzaría notoriedad hasta el año 2007, cuando la compañía automovilística Saab lanzó una campaña publicitaria a escala global que incluía una canción llamada Through Your Eyes. Desde ese momento, la presencia de Nina Kinert en la Red se disparó, con el consecuente beneficio tanto para la autora como para la imagen de la marca anunciante.

3. Ok Go

La agrupación musical Ok Go consiguió hacer de su tema Here It Goes Again un verdadero hito en la historia de Internet. Todo comenzó en el verano de 2006, con la puesta en circulación de un sencillo vídeo en el que la agrupación musical realizaba una coreografía sobre cintas andadoras. Actualmente, el clip cuenta con más de 44 millones y medio de visitas en Youtube, número que no deja de ascender. El fenómeno se ha extendido a lo largo de todo el Globo, y ha generado numerosas parodias e imitaciones. En España, el programa de televisión El hormiguero (Cuatro) realizó en directo una versión de la coreografía, a la que se puede acceder aquí.

4. El Koala

Manuel Jesús Rodríguez, conocido actualmente como ‘El Koala’, es un malagueño que hasta hace poco trabajaba ayudando a su padre en un cortijo familiar. En el año 2006, el canal 40 Latino emitió un videoclip de su canción ‘Opá, yo viazé un corrá’, que inmediatamente pasó a la Red, desde donde se articuló la verdadera difusión del tema, con más de 18 millones y medio de visitas en Youtube.

5. Amo a Laura

La agencia publicitaria Tiempo BBDO, trabajando para la MTV, lanzó esta conocida campaña viral en Internet en 2006, consiguiendo cotas de notoriedad inesperadas. El tema ‘Amo a Laura’ pertenecía, supuestamente, a un grupo de música llamado ‘Happiness’, que actuaba por cortesía de la ‘Asociación Nuevo Renacer’, una asociación ficticia que luchaba contra medios como la MTV. El sitio web de la campaña, actualmente inactivo, llevaba por nombre ‘NomiresMTV.com’.

6. Canon in D is everywhere

Rob Paravonian es un modesto músico y cómico estadounidense que frecuenta los clubes de comedia de Nueva York. Alcanzó la fama en Internet tras aparecer un vídeo en Youtube en el que realizaba una parodia en torno al Canon en Re de J. Pachelbel. Actualmente, continúa trabajando como cómico, sin que el fenómeno que se desarrolló en torno a él haya afectado a su carrera profesional.

7. Alex Mitchell

Armado con un violín eléctrico y un generador de efectos, el músico Alex Mitchell realiza composiciones que actualmente han dado la vuelta al mundo. Algunos vídeos de sus recitales fueron colgados en Internet, superando en apenas unos meses los cientos de miles de visitas. En 2007 grabó su primer album, después de que varios internautas contactaran con él para pedir versiones de mayor calidad de sus temas. En la actualidad estudia en Fordham University, Nueva York, compaginando sus estudios con su actividad como músico.

8. Stringfever

Stringfever es, tal y como reza su eslogan, el primer ‘cuarteto de cuerda genéticamente modificado’, que une la música clásica con instrumentos eléctricos. El vídeo History of music marcó un antes y un después en la historia de la agrupación, dada la enorme fama que alcanzó en la Red. Su ’show’, una mezcla de humor y música, da ahora la vuelta al mundo.

9. Por una cabeza

Es quizá el fenómeno más reciente de los listados. El tema Por una cabeza, de Carlos Gardel, ha aparecido en películas como Esencia de mujer o Mentiras arriesgadas, incluso en una versión del español Andrés Calamaro de dicho tema. Actualmente, se ha recuperado su vigencia gracias a Internet, con la puesta en circulación en Youtube del anuncio emitido recientemente para el nuevo Seat León. La música que aparece en dicha campaña es una versión del tema original de Gardel llevada a cabo por la agrupación Gotan Project.

10. Alamedadosoulna

Los 10 miembros de Alamedadosoulna practican una mezcla de ska y reggae, una suerte de ‘música espectáculo’ que también vio en Internet un filón que aprovechar para su promoción. Esta agrupación es, en realidad, la unión de dos grupos de música madrileños: Cabeza de Canoa y Güernika, que definen sus actuaciones como un “espectáculo con corazón”. Su llegada a Internet se produjo mediante un vídeo que inauguraba un nuevo formato llamado trainacting, consistente en una grabación llevada a cabo exclusivamente entre dos estaciones de tren o metro. Se pretende así generar cierta viralidad, haciendo que otras personas suban sus vídeos, basándose en esta práctica, al correspondiente canal de Youtube.

Anna är ju alltid bra.

Det är overkligt när någon som man lyssnat otroligt mycket på plötsligt står framför en och sjunger. Scenen var kanske inte den bäst, alldeles för stor och “scenig”, svårt med publikkontakt när publiken inte syns.

“Förbandet” Nina Kinert var en positiv överraskning (och det enda jag lyssnat på sen dess).

Annars har helgen ägnats åt fortsatt fixande. Den där att-göra-listan är som ett svart hål. Den äter upp tid. Hela januari till exempel. Men nu börjar det närma sig slutet (har svarta hål slut?).

Dessutom har jag gjort mitt bästa för att inte ramla. Hela stan (byn?) är glashal. Vågar inte skriva att det lyckats eftersom helgen inte är slut ännu.

Fast det är fint. Med snö. Som pepparkakshus.

Anna Ternheim recently invited some of her fellow Swedish songsters to record a wonderful acapella version of “Summer Rain”, off her new album Leaving On a Mayday. Featured in the clip are Ane Brun, Nina Kinert, Ellekari Larsson from The Tiny and Johanna och Klara from First Aid Kit. It was filmed Christian Haag in Decibel Studios, Stockholm:

Ja och Nej. Självklart finns det, och har alltid funnits flera namn på kvinnliga tonsättare och musikaliska genier av kvinnligt kön att tillgå, och under århundradena har proportionen kvinnliga komponister ökat undan för undan, så onekligen förstår man att det mest handlar om det gamla fula kvinnoförtryckets tryne som bökar kreativa kvinnor tillbaka. Spännande är också att många kända tonsättarinnor vuxit upp i skuggan av sina manliga bröder eller män, och männen i sin tur i skuggan av dem och till viss del fått hjälp av samspelet. Fanny Mendelsohn under brodern Felix, Clara Schumann under maken Robert och Alma Mahler under skuggan av maken Gustav Mahler.

När det gäller Clara S och Alma M så var dessa ordentligt uppskattade i sin samtid för deras kulturgärningar både som musiker, kompositörer och kulturinspiratörer. Att de inte räknas som genier är nog för att kvinnor förr i tiden haft större problem att komma fram och finna en bra mylla att utvecklas i. Att Alma Mahler. var begåvad finns inget tvivel om däremot är det mer eller mindre omöjligt att hitta bra skivor eller youtube-citat med henne. Det som finns är ju  fruktansvärt och bedrövligt, om ni ens orkat lyssna färdigt på det. Se där! Trynet är tillbaka. Varför är inte folk nyfikna på några av våra främsta kulturbärare bara för att de haft fel genus på sina förnamn? Clara Schumann var enklare att hitta.

Samma gäller Ane Brun och Nina Kinert. Jag bevistade deras konsert på Storan i Göteborg. Hur begåvade de är ligger väl kanske på om vi låter dem utvecklas till sina individuella gränser, men nog finns det grunder för att släppa fram dem…..och njuta även av deras alster.

Texterna är underfundiga och musiken som är vår tids samtida “Lieder” dvs lugnare Singer/songwriter-pop, är kul behaglig eller medryckande.

Genier? Kanske – Vi får se!

Göteborgskör
prisad i Italien

Dirigent Ulrike Heider och Haga motettkör är profana mästare. De hade i helgen stora framgångar i en internationell körfestival i Venedig.

Under den internationella körfestivalen Musica in Venezia övertygade Haga motettkör i båda de kategorier den tävlade i. Kören från Göteborg kom etta i klassen profan musik och tvåa i sakral musik. Dessutom utsågs körens ledare Ulrike Heider till bästa dirigent.
I tävlingen medverkade ett fyrtiotal europeiska körer i flera olika kategorier. När domarna räknat samman poängställningen för festivalens samtliga klasser slutade Haga motettkör trea. Festivalens totalmästare blev den tjeckiska damkören Foerstrovo Komorni Pevecke Sdruzeni.
Under Kulturnatta på fredag ska Haga motettkör framföra delar av sitt vinnande program i Hagakyrkan.

This gig was incredibly loud. During the first ten minutes, I honestly thought my eardrums would pop. But it got better after that.
