Nina Nesbitt is the Scottish songstress who is taking the country by storm and has had one incredible journey since this time last year. We are only 2 months in to 2013 and already Nina has been announced as the winner of the ‘Virgin Media Next Big thing Award’, completed her next EP ‘Stay Out’ and is busy selling out headline shows all over the country. So what is next? well..festival season of course! Nina Nesbitt has announced her first ever festival appearance will be at T in The Park.

It took me more than enough listens to make my mind up on this single, but eventually I found the thought. To Kill A King are a folk rock band based in London and formed while studying at the University of Leeds and by the middle of October 2011, they released their first EP, My Crooked Saint. The release features the single I’m reviewing here, Bloody Shirt.

The song features some catchy lyrics but it’s the melody that brings to my attention the most. The chorus, ‘Get out and get gone, this town is only gonna get worse,’ reflects slightly on a more personal level, but putting that aside, there’s nothing. It’s a little repetitive and monotonous but like Only Love by Nina Nesbitt, it’s a great playlist breaker but I can’t imagine myself listening to it often.

So just in the last week various news stories and exciting announcements have been made involving Glasgow’s music scene.

Firstly, as many of you may already know, Scotland’s long-running music festival “T In The Park” is celebrating its 20th anniversary this July and have confirmed even more acts to their already outstanding line-up. German electro pioneers ‘Kraftwerk’ have just been confirmed to headline the festival this summer. The German legends will join other major headlines – Mumford & Sons, Rihanna and The Killers – at Balado along with Scotland’s very own musical talents Calvin Harris and Emeli Sande.More acts are still to be confirmed and like most, I can’t wait to find out what other global megastars plan to perform this year!

Emeli Sande also hit the headlines this week when the chart-topping singer/songwriter announced her plans to start up her own record label. The “Read All About It” star is hoping that she will be able to help young aspiring artists following her own struggles to get a record deal when she first started out. Could this be the beginning of a world-wide Scottish music domination? Let’s hope so!

Now for this weeks chart hits…

Achieving the number one spot this week was new-comers Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ “Thrift Shop” featuring Wanz, taken from their album which was actually released two years ago in 2010.

This track was closely followed by another club-smasher “Get Up” by the Bingo Players featuring the already successful hip hop quartet Far East Movement. In third position is Scotland’s answer to Alicia Keys, the increasingly successful Emeli Sande, with her self-written ballad “Clown” which she performed during The X Factor Final back in December. The next song, claiming forth place in its first week is “My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark” by Fall Out Boy, followed by another mega-hit from Scotland notorious Calvin ‘borrow-a-beat’ Harris, featuring Tinie Tempah, “Drink From The Bottle”. The Queen of Pop, Britney Spears, returned to the top of the charts this year when she teamed up with The Voice judge Will.I.Am, creating the hit  ”Scream & Shout” which is still standing firm in the top ten. Rihanna’s “Stay”, featuring Mikky Ekko, shows a much more vulnerable side to the  mega-star, claiming the sixth position, followed by two pop-friendly hits, Taylor Swift’s “I Knew You Were Trouble” and Little Mix’s “Change Your Life”. And finally in the tenth spot another dance track following the collaboration of Disclosure and Alunageorge with “White Noise”.

And now for some new music…

Rising Scottish Singer, Nina Nesbitt, released her new music video this week after filming in several clubs in Glasgow. The new single, titled “Stay Out”, will be released on the 8th of April, however the video is on her YouTube Channel now. Check it out…you might recognize the clubs! (Hint – The Garage!)

Scottish singer/songwriter Nina Nesbitt gave us Only Love as part of her The Apple Tree EP in April last year. The EP reached #6 on the iTunes downloads charts and #1 on the singer/songwriter charts after being played on BBC Radio 1.

The song is acoustic, with some excellent vocals from her too. There’s a sudden introduction of instruments in the chorus that randomly disappears afterwards, however I couldn’t fault it anymore. There is a gentle rhythm that is held continuously by soft percussion and a mesmerising melody.

This is a great playlist breaker, bridging a gap between the favourite songs and albums that are constantly on repeat, but unfortunately this song is only that, it’s not one that I would chose to play.

As usual, Im still up at 2AM and still in my owl mode… not sleepy I guess or just telling my mind not to. Anyways, catching up with me… hmmm where did I stop last time? Oh yeah, the “Snake Year”. It’s almost Chinese New Year here and we have this celebration in my city, it’s a little like “Maskarra Festival” but the difference is instead of mask we will going to have a “human snake”. As I heard, they are attempting to break some record for the Guinness for the “longest human snake”. Well let’s see for that. Looking forward for CNY! **Chinese lanterns** YEY!

As for my blog title tonight, I just want to post some birthday wishes to my dear friends who just celebrated their bday last time most especially to Laura-Lisa where I prepared a simple birthday message for her with the special participation of Nina Nesbitt. It was nice and sweet of Nina saying “yes” to my request. I still can’t believed it. We actually talk through DMs in Twitter. Nina is such a darling. Back to the bday vid, Laura-Lisa  indeed love the video. Im so happy that she love it. She actually tweeted several times and linked me too. It was the birthday of Martin Cox too, and on the next day Nina Nesbitt’s manager Vicky celebrated hers. Lots of birthdays. My wishes to you again guys.

Forget Gaga and her ‘Little Monsters’, Justin and his ‘Beliebers’ and even Jessie J and her ‘heartbeats’, 2013 is going to be dominated by ‘Nesbians’- the self-named super fans of the lovely Nina Nesbitt who she chats to in a special Nesbian code via her website. Cute or what?

Nina has already wowed the crowd in her homeland of Scotland at T in the Park, racked up 50,000 Twitter followers and thanks to chance meetings, twitter convos and a lot of determination she has already supported Ed Sheeran, Example and Rizzle Kicks on their sell-out tours.

The 18-year-old half-Scot half-Swedish lass with an enviable blonde mane of hair that frames her signature red lips and eyeliner flicks is truly an artist of her generation – she started her career by uploading videos of covers on Youtube, writing songs and teaching herself how to play guitar at the age of 15, all whilst staying in direct contact with her fans and finishing off at school. Phew!

Her debut EP, ‘The Apple Tree’ reached number 6 in the ITunes chart and track of the name same name was Fearne Cotton’s single of the week on Radio 1. She also released track, ‘Boy’ online which has received a cray amount of Youtube hits.

Skip forward to 2013 and Nesbitt is on the brink of releasing her debut single due early Feb with an album to boot in the summer which has been produced with Jake Gosling [He’s worked with the likes of Paloma Faith and One Direction FYI].

 

I was lucky enough to catch up with Nina for a quick chat recently where she told me that the album would be “like The Apple Tree EP but with a bit of a grungier feel too.” It’s set to be a mix of ballads and upbeat acoustic tracks with lyrics that touch upon adolescence, love and break ups.

Fans of 2012’s golden boy, Ed Sheeran will undoubtedly love Nina and not just because the pair have already worked together. Nina offers the female perspective of confessional and relatable lyrics with catchy melodies- something that Ed cracked when he initially debuted last year.

When I asked Nina if she was nervous when touring with the likes of Ed Sheeran and Example, she replied in her typically nonchalant yet understated way, “I don’t really get nervous, it was good practice I guess”. Unfazed or what? A confident young woman who has defied the rules, loves her fans and broken into the industry in her own way is just what the chart needs – she has the talent to back up the bravado too…We officially want to be a part of the Nesbian crew!

Nina Nesbitt is a singer that I have only recently become aware of, but I think it’s safe to say after a YouTubing the half-Scottish, half-Swedish singer-songwriter it won’t be long before she’s making an even bigger name for herself. At the tender age of eighteen the singer experienced success when her self-released EP The Apple Tree travelled straight to number six on the iTunes download chart, and then number one on the singer-songwriter chart in April.

The exposure lead to a label deal with Island Records and the artists is currently working on her album with Fraser T Smith, who has also worked on songs such as Adele’s Set Fire to The Rain and Taio Cruz’s Break Your Heart. Nina’s album is said to be a break-up album forged from experience, following in the footsteps of Adele’s phenomenal albums 19 and 21. One of the songs in the album is Headlights co-written with Smith, and if his previous work is anything to go by we should definitely be keeping an eye out for that song!

If Taylor Swift and Ellie Goulding were to have a love child, and that child had the ability to sing the vocals would bare an uncanny likeness to those of Nina Nesbitt’s! Her songs have a quirky country sound that brings something fresh to the music industry. My personal favourites from the Nina Nesbitt archive are Make Me Fall and Noserings And Shoestrings, but that’s just my preference the singer has also uniquely covered versions of David Gray’s Babylon and Example’s Stay Awake. Example was so impressed with Nesbitt’s beautiful rendition of his song, that he tweeted her YouTube channel to his followers and also invited the singer to join him on tour.

The singer-songwriter has since been on tour with Ed Sheeran and Rizzle Kicks. You may also recognise Nina from her cameo role in Ed Sheeran’s music video Drunk, which consequentially brings me on to the fact that the two have been romantically linked.

2012 was a spectacular year for Aberdeen’s Emile Sande, however at the rate Nina Nesbitt is going 2013 is set to be another year dominated by the Scott’s.  So keep an eye out for this young lady and her new album which is expected to be released at some point this year.

I knew 2 stores that would provide the perfect stock. Godiva, an independent boutique situated in the Old Town of Edinburgh which stocks quirky Sottish brands along with a great vintage section and Goodstead, found in Edinburgh’s busy city centre stocking some of the coolest and on point brands around including several northern European designers which would do nicely as Nina is half Swedish (her mother is from Stockholm).

And so the shoot began, the location was a friend’s house which had woods, an out house and even chickens (which I later discovered were crazy). Nina loved all the clothes so choosing the right pieces was easy and she was a natural in front of the camera. The shoot was relaxed, Nina had no desire for a make-up artist or hair stylist, she just got on with it and a month later the issue was released. (Slave, issue 5)

Lessons learned on this day….Nina Nesbitt loves a good hat and I seem to have an irrational fear of chickens.

Many LA Nesbains turned up on her free gig too, some Nesbians prepared gifts for Nina like tortoise soft toys. See, how amazing Nesbians are!
