First off, yes, finally I am getting one of my reviews out of the way! Secondly, reviewing this album was interesting because I really have no business listening to Panic At The Disco as the new American Emo scene isn’t really my niche. Now the record itself; Pretty. Odd is an interesting title when trying to gain a larger fan base. When Panic At The Disco came out I really could not stand their music at all. “I Write Sins Not Tragedies” is one, too long a title, and secondly this is not guitar, bass and drums. Half of it strings, which is nice, but lyrics and the placement of them all is just bad.

Now the lack of lyrical talent carries over to this album. However there are some bright spots in this record. First off, the opening of the record with the song “We’re So Starving” is nice to start off. I immediately liked the guitar riff and the song was short and simple, it was a nice interlude to “Nine In The Afternoon”, which in my eyes is probably the best song on the record. Not just because it appears on NHL 2009 and I’ve heard it a thousand times, but it is good, a consistent rock song. The horns along with the piano are simple, as the lyrics in this song are smooth to listen to.

Pretty. Odd

“She’s A Handsome Woman” is good, but once again lyrical content is really lacking in this album. “Do You Know What I’m Seeing” is okay, it has a nice acoustic sound and carries on well. “That Green Gentleman” was also a very nice song, it is uplifting and can really cheer you up, one of the other clear stand outs in the album.

Now this record takes a turn it shouldn’t have. “I Have Friends In Holy Spaces” is another song I feel is really irrelevant. There is way too much going on in this song, I had no pleasure reading this song. The horns, guitar, were going too fast for this song, and strings really doesn’t help. “Northern Downpour” is another weak tune, the lyrics to me in this song are the worst I have heard in a while, maybe these guys should take a writing class or something because it is quite weak.

Once again, we turn in another direction. I was met with a smile when I heard “When The Day Met The Night” because this song is just consistent again. The vocals are nice along with the horns, which are used effectively this time. “Pas de Cheval” is another upbeat nice song that I really enjoyed listening to. Now I was surprised. How could I be enjoying Panic At The Disco? It was a new experience for me. It was different. And I found that the horns really made me happy. “The Piano Knows Something I Don’t Know” is another effective song that changes its tone towards the end with a nice string arrangement that I really liked.

Now, I always seem to make a comparison between the band I review and a band I really like, and with the next song, “Behind The Sea” I was really reminded of Duran Duran. It was really nice, the chorus and overlapping singing was really nice. It was just a very 80’s pop happy song.

But wait, we were going so well, and then we went back down again. “Folkin’ Around” was another irrelevant song that I really did not like. We were changed from a nice 80’s pop theme to this orchestral-pop-emo brand that I can’t stand. “She Had The World” is following the same path. I asked myself “what is this?” because I really don’t get it, is this supposed to be the deep lyrical song that is just so smooth sounding because of excessive sting arrangements? Well they did a bad job. Again bad lyrics.

“From A Mountain In The Middle Of The Cabins” was silly. Why do I need FLUTE in an indie pop album? I was expecting some great guitars, not a Broadway show tunes album from the fifties. Chanting at the end was a little nice I guess. But listen, I really don’t like this song, it is like they are trying to add a rock feel to a Disney movie; it just can’t be done, well, unless you get a train wreck like the Jonas Brothers, but don’t get me started on them.

Now to close out the album, which I was glad to do, “Mad As Rabbits” was a nice closer. Great upbeat feeling, chanting and some horns again, which always seem to make me happy, but again the lyrics could use some lyrics.

Lead Singer Brendon Urie

So, with this album over, I was not at all sad that it ended. Most of the times I am really satisfied if I am left wanting more. But this time I wasn’t. Panic At The Disco obviously has no problem making a great sound that is unique, but now, there has to be a boundary. On the line with flute and too many orchestra incorperations the lyrics also were weak through the record, which disappoints me because lyrics you are supposed to remember and keep singing, but I don’t want to remember any of these at all.

Panic At The Disco does have some learning to do, and yes, I give them credit, they are reaching out to the music industry and giving us something different. However, it think it is too much at one time. They should be taking it in moderation and slow it down just a little bit, take it back to basics and give us some good old indie pop with a touch of rock guitars and then some horns and strings, just not all in one, slowly but surely these guys will develop, I am sure of that.

2/5

I decided that since I keep seeing music videos and going, “hey, I like that,” I’m

I decided that since I keep seeing music videos and going, “hey, I like that,” I’m going to make a list! These are just five off the top of my head and they’re not deep insights or choices, since comps drained my brain sludge. I lie, I barely had any comps. They’re probably all in the same sort of weird style…Not in any special order. I know that disappoints some people.

1. “Grace Kelly” – Mika (the best party ever, I think)

2. “Nine in the Afternoon” – Panic At the Disco (Probably a ripoff of the Beatles, but still weird enough for me to like it.)

3. “Relax” – Mika (Someone climbs into a cake skinny and pops out fat!”)

4. “Ur So Gay” – Katy Perry (Just…vengeful barbies. And the fact that guy barbies are eunuchs like Will. Huzzah.)

5. “Foundations” – Kate Nash (The stop-motion toothbrushes make me laugh.)

Honorable Mention: “Love Love Love” – James Blunt. I don’t like the song and they just sit there and do closeups of James Blunt’s face, but the painted instruments are cool. That’s all.

I hate music videos where people perform or sing deeply in separate shots that don’t fit in the video. It’s like in “Womanizer” where Britney Spears is randomly lying on a block with all this steam stealthily hiding her lady lumps. Why? What does that have to do with anything except to be scandalous and have a few guys think your hot? Except for “Grace Kelly” and “Relax” because Mika’s performances are always weird, and there’s a party with old Lebanese ladies. Huzzah. And he doesn’t lie on blocks with steam blocking his butt, right?

On another note, in the video for “Lovebug” …Jonas Brothers…there’s this one shot where Joe Jonas looked like Johnny Depp for like, a second. And I hated them a little less. Oh crap. I’ve just realized what I’ve started. Fangirls are going to cling onto this moment of weakness. I can hear it now. “Oh yeah? Joe Jonas looks like Johnny Depp!” Um…sure.

Professor Plum in the library with a candlestick!

Although I noticed in the comments that “Lovebug” ish shtarting to confushe people becaush although they hate the Jonash Brothers, along comes a shong that’s tolerable, and maybe even likeable (at least until that need to prove their rocklinesh at the end). And people don’t know what to think about themselves, afraid even to utter the words, “I like a Jonas Brothers’ song.” Yes, I did just go all Sean Connery on you.

Also, Hilary Duff’s newest video, which is scandalous, makes me laugh because when she’s doing it with the guy she’s the only one moving. He’s just standing there. Scandalous, yes, but it’s funny. It’s a pretty bad video. There’s the close up singing and head grabbing. Well…Mika does that too in “Grace Kelly” but because he is a man we are so shocked by a man singing and head grabbing in a close up that we do not care.

Teddy Geiger gets props also for “These Walls” because of the burning piano. I wish I could burn my piano, but then I would be sad that I had burned my piano. However the blatant ipod jeans product placements is a fail. Who wears ipod jeans?

I also have to mention the video of that one screamy song of Ashlee Simpson’s where she wears a Sleepy Hollow t-shirt. Song sucks, t-shirt is awesome, although not that cool. It’s only merit is having Johnny Depp on it.

Odd. singen, was natürlich alles nicht stimmt…

Nein! Es ist mittelmäßig.

Das hat gar nicht umbedingt, mit dem Wechsel von Electro-Synthie-mit-Zungenbrechergesang-Gedüddel zu … ja, was ist in Pretty. Odd. eigentlich alles drin? Also warum nur mittelmäßig?

Don’t worry- it’s time to get freaky.

Last night I downloaded some music on my iPod, and I cannot get this song out of my head. Panic at the Disco has invaded my mind with their catchy beats and tantalizing lyrics. For the past two hours I have been tapping my heels under my desk to this ridiculous rhythm, swaying my head to the sounds in my mind, and I can’t seem to shake it.

Immerse yourself in song, slam a diet coke, and join me in rockin’ out:

Back to the streets where we began
Feeling as good as lovers can .. you know
Well, now we’re feeling so good

Picking up things we shouldn’t read
It looks like the end of history as we know
It’s just the end of the world

Back to the street where we began
Feeling as good as love .. you could .. you can

Into a place, where thoughts can bloom
Into a room where it’s nine in the afternoon
And we know that it could be
And we know that it should
And you know that you feel it too
Am I who you think about in bed?
When the lights are dim and your hands are shaking as you’re sliding off your dress?
Well Then think of what you did. And I hope to God he was worth it.
When the lights are dim and your heart is racing as you’re fingers touch your skin.
I’ve got more wit, a better kiss, a hotter touch, a better fuck
No, no, no you know it will always just be, me

Now I guess we’re back to us, oh cameraman, swing the focus!
In case I lost my train of thought, where was it that we last left off?
(Let’s pick up, pick up)

Oh now I do recall, we just were getting to the part…
Where the shock sets in, and the stomach acid finds a new way to make you get sick.
I sure hope you didn’t expect that you’d get all of the attention.
Now let’s not get selfish
(besides)Did you really think I’d let you kill this chorus?

Odd. singen, was natürlich alles nicht stimmt…

Nein! Es ist mittelmäßig.

Das hat gar nicht umbedingt, mit dem Wechsel von Electro-Synthie-mit-Zungenbrechergesang-Gedüddel zu … ja, was ist in Pretty. Odd. eigentlich alles drin? Also warum nur mittelmäßig?

I need an outing with my girlfriends. Please? Anywhere except Bugis, I need to watch a movie. Like seriously. We haven’t gone out since valentine’s day. And it’s the march holidays. And I am bored at home. So I’ve started writing a Fic to keep myself busy. I’m enjoying writing it a lot. Haven’t written anything in ages.

Anyway…Currently addicted to Nine in the Afternoon by Panic! At the disco. Ryan Ross has that whole good looking face; agreed? But he kinda looks a bit like a girl. But yes, he is pretty good looking. Not really my type, but yes. Brandon Urie is pretty good looking too. Well; that’s bands for ya!

Now we’re feeling so good.

Picking up things we shouldn’t read,
Looks like the end of history as we know,
It’s just the end of the world.

Back to the street where we began,
Feeling as good as love, you could, you can.

Into a place, where thoughts can bloom,
Into a room where it’s nine in the afternoon ,
And we know that it could be,
And we know that it should,
And you know that you feel it too,
‘Cause it’s nine in the afternoon.

And your eyes are the size of the moon,
You could ’cause you can so you do,
We’re feeling so good,
Just the way that we do
When it’s nine in the afternoon .

Your eyes are the size of the moon,
You could ’cause you can so you do,
We’re feeling so good.

Back to the street,
Down to our feet,
Losing the feeling of feeling unique,
Do you know what I mean?

Back to the place,
Where we used to say,
Man it feels good to feel this way,
Now I know what I mean.

Back to the street, back to the place,
Back to the room where it all began,
Back to the room where it all began,
‘Cos it’s nine in the afternoon.

And your eyes are the size of the moon,
You could ’cause you can so you do,
We’re feeling so good,
Just the way that we do,
When it’s nine in the afternoon.

Your eyes are the size of the moon,
You could ’cause you can so you do,
We’re feeling so good,
Just the way that we do,
When it’s nine in the afternoon,

Your eyes are the size of the moon,
You could ’cause you can so you do,
We’re feeling so good,
Just the way that we do,
When it’s nine in the afternoon.
