As promised yesterday, here’s a look at the new setup to my room.

This is the main wall which overhangs my couch. The left is my Lawson commission of Leonardo, Middle is a Dan McCarthy Serigraph (screenprint), and the far right is my Michael Dooney Leonardo Commission.

Here’s a close up on the Dooney Commission. This sucker is so neat! Although, I did notice, and commented about it on Dooney’s blog, that Leo’s missing his across-the-shoulder strap. So, his sheaths (sheaves?) are being held up by magic… possibly because Splinter taught him more mystical arts stuff than we ever could have known!

Sure, this picture’s kinda bare, but I wanted the little picture painting by Turddemon to accentuate some color on the side while not taking away from the three art pieces on the main wall.

I put this near my closet doors so that when I set at my desk it’s like the eyes of the heart are looking into the back of my head. When I first got this off of eBay, I wasn’t much of a fan of his work, and just was happy that it only cost me a little less than $10 including shipping. Now, after seeing this in person, it’s artistry is top notch and I would really like another one at some point.

Here’s a look at my desk. I have my screen at an angle because it’s big and I really need a flat screen monitor, but working at an angle actually is a lot nicer than I expected it to be. I keep all of my movies in easy reach.

Sabretooth’s been having a field day with my desk because it’s not completely organized so she likes to bat stuff off of it while I’m trying to sleep.

I had to have my “Your Ship Sank” Serigraph above my desk because it brings me such great, unexpected joy whenever I look at it.

Here’s another look at the main three.

For updates, I’m hoping to come up with a Christmas shopping recomendations list this week.

I would also like to update “1000 Things We Hate” as well as the other tabs, but that may come during winter break.

I’m staying in Tacoma for all of break, and will probably be bored out of my mind. But, at the moment, I have to focus on finals.

Ninjas

Bio
Slapstick Tortoise are highly-trained Moshlings. Unfortunately whoever trained them was rubbish because all their good at is messing up their moves, falling over and getting stuck on their back. And that’s bad because they’re supposed to be ninjas. If only they stop watching kung fu movies and started training, they might not be so useless. Hi-yaaa!

Laying belly-side up and jogging.

Habitat
These gormless Moshlings hibernate under the boardwalk at Groan Bay but often gather to compare (and then mess up) new fighting moves at the Whailing Wharf.

I meant to upload these before Halloween… Oh well. Yeah, I even did shading on it.

Yeah, I’m pretty sure my pumpkin was better than your’s… or, at least (I hope), most of yours.

This design stemmed from a doodle/sketch all the way in September, and I knew as soon as it was drawn that that was my pumpkin carving design. My pumpkin patch search was meant to find just the perfect one (which was quite large and heavy for my skinny body…)

The most difficult part was probably making sure that the one piece representing the forehead and eyes did not fall off because the structure was weak at that point. So, I had to shave the back of that area off in order to lighten the load. Megan and Arista laughed at me while I was talking all of the logistics behind pumpkin carving. My sister was a bit too preoccupied. Here’s a picture of everyone together with our pumpkins:

Appearing on just one teen drama? Psht. Two? Forget that. If you’re Matt Barr, you have a trifecta going and will settle for nothing less.

Barr is perhaps best-known for playing Ian “Psycho Derek” Banks on One Tree Hill, but has two other teen drama roles under his belt: a young Keith van der Woodsen in Gossip Girl’s 80s flashback episode and Wes, a college student on The O.C.

What could make it even better? This: Barr couldn’t have been nicer–or funnier–in our interview. See for yourself below.

TeenDramaWhore: When you were cast on One Tree Hill, were you aware of all the twists in store for your character? Specifically, did you know you weren’t really Peyton’s brother and did you know you were going to go down the ’stalker’ route?

Matt Barr: I really did go into it pretty blind. The only information the producers shared with me in the beginning was that Derek had a dark side. What that meant, I really had no idea. Little did I know I was going to have time of my life! I had no clue it would escalate the way it did, and to the degree it did. I remember, towards the end of that wild character arc, I told creator Mark Schwahn, “Man, you’re really not afraid to go for it!” Loved every minute of it.

TDW: How did you channel all the craziness you had to display?

Barr: Ha Ha. Good question. You know, truth is we all have this instinctual dark side to us. I’m not saying it’s evil; it’s just this raw survival technique that, when placed in extreme circumstances, or faced with desperate measures, we are all capable of some pretty crazy things. Ha ha. I remember when I was like 6 years old, it was my birthday, and as my mom brought my birthday cake to the table, my little brother jumped up and blew out all my candles. I was so mad; I screamed and said something like, “I’m going to kill you, Luke!” Needless to say, I didn’t kill my brother that day. He’s now 22, and bigger and stronger than me. But you could say as I tapped into that angry craziness of Derek, it all started with my little bro. I guess you just have to reach down inside yourself and pull it out. Thanks, bro.

TDW: What goes in to coordinating fight scenes like the ones you had on the show? You had ones with Chad Michael Murray (Lucas), Hilarie Burton (Peyton) and Sophia Bush (Brooke). Is it different to do them with female costars versus the males?

Barr: So much coordination! But I have a blast with that suff. Although I did feel the pressure at times. I remember the stunt crew and the producers saying, “Please don’t injure or kill the stars of our show!” So we practiced plenty. Funny story, though: at one point in a fight sequence, Sophia jumps on my back hitting me and I’m supposed to slam her into the wall [ed. note: Episode 4.16, You Call It Madness, But I Call It Love]. Well, during filming, I’m trying to be extra fragile with Soph; I’m really acting here. But Sophia was really selling it, because she was just beating the living crap out of me. She’s so physical and athletic. So finally on one take, I got really into it, and slammed Sophia into that wall. We fell down, and as I was checking to see it if I had accidentally killed Sophia, the director runs over and says, “Looked great guys. So real! Yeah, do it like that. OK, let’s go again.” Sophia and I laughed. We were pretty bruised by the end of the day.

TDW: Everyone always talks about the “tattoo” of Peyton you had on your back. How long did it take to apply?

Barr: You ready for this……like 2 mins. It’s basically like the ones you get out of a pack of bubblegum. Just stick it on, wet it, and peel it off. Well, a really big one of those. Does that ruin the magic?

TDW: Are you recognized often as “Psycho Derek”?

Barr: All the time. It blows my mind. One Tree Hill fans are most loyal, hardcore fans on the planet. They’re great.

TDW: I don’t know if this is too ‘out there’ but has the “Psycho Derek” rep affected your–let’s say–romantic life at all?

Barr: Ha ha. Now that’s a question! Lets just say the the whole “is that tattoo real” debate has come in handy a few times.

TDW: Are you still in touch with the cast?

Barr: I am. Love those guys and gals. They really made me feel like part of the family during my time on the show. Lee Norris [Mouth] really took me under his wing. Showed me the One Tree Hill ropes. He’s probably the most genuine guy you’ll ever meet. In fact, I owe him a call. (Note to self: call Lee back.)

TDW: You’ve actually guest-starred on 3 teen dramas: The O.C. (Episode 3.22, The College Try), One Tree Hill (seven episodes in season 4) and Gossip Girl (Episode 2.24, Valley Girls). Any interest in joining one of them, or a similar show, for the long-term?

Barr: Well we actually shot the GG episode as a spin-off pilot. Had the network picked up the series, it had the potential to be long-term. But yeah, if the right opportunity presents itself, I’ll jump at it.

TDW: Everyone expected your GG episode to lead to the spin-off. Alas, that’s not happening. Do you know what they had in store for your character and the show, had it been picked up?

Barr: Van Der Woodsen was going to be introduced as a relatively trivial character, but there was more substance to him than we perceived. I was looking forward to going back to the 80’s. My experience in the 80’s pretty much consisted of Ninja Turtle underwear, and threatening to kill my younger brother.

TDW: Any chance we’ll see more of you via flashbacks? Or any chance Ian will come back to Tree Hill to taunt Brooke?

Barr: Hey, this is Hollywood. There’s always the possibility! There’s worse things in life than taunting Sophia Bush!

TDW: You also starred in the serial killer mystery show, Harper’s Island, which was one of the “it” shows this past spring/summer. What was it like working on a show where you have absolutely no idea what’s going to happen in future episodes?

Barr: It was such a unique experience. We, the actors, as we read the scripts from week to week, really experienced the show “in the moment.” Just like the audience does. Made it exciting and scary. We had no clue who was going to live or die week to week. I think it served us as actors, because just like our characters, we were living moment to moment, fighting for survival.

TDW: You also recently starred in Pedro, the made-for-TV film about a former Real World cast member who died of AIDS. Was that just another acting project for you or did it have a special meaning/impact?

Barr: It was both. I play this character named Puck. One of the most colorful characters you’ll ever meet. An actor’s dream. I really wanted this part. But also, Pedro Zamora’s story is important. Even as the antagonist, I wanted to help tell the story of this real-life hero.

TDW: What projects are you working on now?

Barr: I’m heading to San Francisco in a couple days to work on this new show Trauma, for NBC. [Ed. note: The episode will now air Nov. 2] But I’ve also been producing a movie called Twelve Mighty Orphans, based on the book by Jim Dent. I optioned the film rights a year ago. A true story, it’s a Depression-era story set in an orphanage in Texas and this visionary coach/math teacher genius comes there and creates this football program, and inspires a sense of pride and excellence. Similar to Seabiscuit, and Jim Braddock, this team of underdog orphans goes on to dominate high school football during the 1930s, and in the process, inspires an entire nation that was looking for heroes. It’s the greatest human interest story I’ve ever read. It’s going to make a fantastic movie.

TDW: Lastly, are you on Twitter or any other social networking site, such as Facebook or MySpace?

Barr: I’m not. I’m a face-to-face kind of guy.

Come back next Sunday for another exclusive interview.

So, I finally got a digital tablet! I’ve been wanting one of these for at least a year, and have been interested in them for probably three.

The timing came down to it, and I decided that it was “now or never.”

Here’s the tablet I got:

I got a pretty damn good deal off of Amazon which made me really happy.

To give you an idea of its ease of use… that drawing I did up there in Photoshop was only the second time of me playing around with the drawing tablet… and I did it all with the pen! No mouse needed.

What to expect from my new investment:

- A running web comic which I’m currently developing.

- Starting up my graphic journal again for now you all to see.

- fun drawings.

- more original artwork!

I’m super excited.

If you had met me when I was in first grade, I would have told you I wanted to be an illustrator for Disney. I’d spend hours doodling, thinking I was going to envision the next Disney princess or dashing hero.

In second grade, I wanted to be April from “The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.” I’d run around the yard with my brothers holding one of my mom’s compacts pretending it was April’s walkie talkie. We even dropped sticks down the sewer cover just to see how far the Turtles had to jump.

In third grade, I decided I’d rather be an author and spent hours writing and writing, most of it childish but still interesting, at least to my 8-year-old mind.

I never had a teacher phase or an astronaut phase or a stay-at-home mom phase. I did, ironically enough, play “office” with my babysitter instead of playing “house.” Yeah, that was me.

At 16, I toiled in a grocery store, pretending I had a clue what hearts of palm and wheat germ were. For the remainder of high school and part of college, I worked in a hardware store. I had a stint in office furniture during college (becoming a full-fledged furniture snob in the process) and came full circle to work in another grocery store – albeit an online one – as an adult. Funny how life works.

I’ve hoped of changing the world in publishing and dreamed of affecting the change as a project manager in youth ministry. Believe me, there’s a difference between hoping and dreaming.

And here I am, mid-20s, still wondering what in the world I want to be when I grow up. It’s a question I’ve tossed around since I was a doodling, Turtle-wannabe, author kid. I’d wager it’s a question I’ll toss around until I’m a doodling, Turtle-wannabe, author (and quite possibly aged) adult, too.

Bern, being her usual cheeky self, asked me for a topless pic of Matt so she could gift him an, erm, unconventional birthday pressie.

And with Bern’s photoshop genius, she came up with the below since my bunch of BADSPY pals had taken to calling Matt ‘Ninja Turtle’ because of his washboard abs, which does remind one of the underside of a turtle. Hahahahaha

He Who Shall Not Be Named’s only commitment is to taking a shower, and his education = that of a 10 year old.

Ninja turtles fight crime. He Who Shall Not Be Named fights the forces that fight crime. Electing You Know Who into power would be like electing Shredder. Or worse, that Brain thing (Crang?), but without the brain. Just the tripod.

“It never happened. There are no facts, you just find a mess of popular misunderstandings”, so Davies.

Davies: “Without time, we can´t do our job anymore!”

Every American male over the age of five knows what happens when you go to see an action movie, part

Every American male over the age of five knows what happens when you go to see an action movie, particularly a kung fu movie. You spend 90 minutes watching Jackie Chan, Jean Claude Van Damme, or a Ninja Turtle battering the bad guys bare-fisted into pulp and then you walk out of the theater thinking, without a shred of irony, “I could totally do that. In fact, I hope there’s a ninja hiding near the theater exit so I can prove right now that I could totally do that.”

After all, the action hero character is usually pretty humble. Most of Jackie Chan’s early characters are peasants, or sons/nephews of poor shopkeepers, and of course, hundreds of warriors must be fought to protect the family tea shop, and who better than Jackie, who up until now has been a shiftless layabout? Heck, the young viewer thinks, I’m a shiftless layabout, therefore logically, I could fend off hundreds of thugs/ninjas/pirates/soldiers with my bare hands, if I really had to.

Luckily, the action movie effect (AME) only lasts an hour or two (it grows shorter as the male ages), and it really only seems to work when the movie is watched in a theater. Otherwise, nothing would ever get done because all the men would be too busy posturing and giving each other dirty looks, glaring at traffic and wondering how many flaming cars they could leap over in one jump, and attempting to catch bullets in their teeth.

Which would probably end badly.

I can only guess that the AME is an artifact of the modern male existence clashing with something older and deeper. Once upon a time (the media teaches us), we were all feudal warlords and mercenaries (“Maybe other guys were farmers, but not me!”) and we did nothing but fight all day, and the AME just brings that ancient genetic identity to the surface, just for a moment.

Do my female readers have any idea what I’m talking about?

Ok I know this is my design blog but I feel this is still relevant. I ran with a team this weekend in the first annual Market to Market relay in Nebraska from Omaha to Lincoln, a total of 86.2 miles. The team I was on had 8 members all of knowing we were just not going to win the race but we could still make an impact and I feel we did just that. We were the Just Us League. Yes nice play on words to the ever popular comic Super Heros the Justice League, and for you diehards out there I know not all of the members of our team were from the Justice League. We were very excited to participate in this event and cannot wait to do it again next year. We did not win the Race but we sure did put up an extraordinary effort in running the distance in 11 hours and 12 minutes, also we did win the costume contest and are already concepting ideas for next year.

Big big shout out to the Market 2 Market organization commitee, outstanding job overall was a great event and well thought out and put together. Thank you, and can’t wait for next year.

Aym leyt por wurk, as yuswal! (I’m late for work, as usual!)

The ninja in the making and the bold star in the limelight. WwWWAAAWWW nindot ni nga mobi (movie).
