“Ninja Assassin”. Enough said, right? It’s such a fantastic title and paired with an “R” rating, the action must be fair to say the least. What about the plot? I don’t know it. I usually make it my business to find out as much as I can about a film I’m going to see in the theater. For this one, the poster was it and that never happens. We’ll see how it goes. Box office revenue is not a sign what’s best. Still, number 6 behind huge holiday extravaganzas and “New Moon,” it’s impressive.

Over on the English Shonen Jump page, you can find two new videos from the Jump Anime Tour in Japan – one is a Naruto short done in all CG, set back when Sasuke was still on the side of Team Kakashi. Another is the very first anime ever made from the Toriko manga, which is an odd little story about a hunter who tracks down exotic wildlife for the tables of gourmets.

Meanwhile, the Japanese version of the Jump video page is streaming a trailer for the One Piece Strong World movie, which comes out in theaters in mid-December. The page also promises a Yu-Gi-Oh! movie trailer in the near future, for the upcoming crossover between the original Yu-Gi-Oh! and its successors, 5D’s and GX.

It is a truth, not universally acknowledged, that zombies are really, really funny. I, for one, have been laughing at their shambling undead antics ever since I sat wide-eyed with delight, back in 1992, watching Peter Jackson’s Braindead – a masterpiece of splatstick zombie humour and gore. In much the same vein is this entry in the ever increasing publishing sub-industry of Jane Austen fan fiction: Pride and prejudice and zombies by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith. The Pride and prejudice stuff – all Jane’s own work. The extra added zombies, vomit, gore and ninjas – attributable to Mr Grahame-Smith, I believe.  

I blogged about this novel back in June, but while six months have passed, I have to say that the memory of Elizabeth tearing the heart out of Lady Catherine de Bourgh’s ninja’s chest can still make me smile. I don’t think that it would be as much fun reading this novel, if one was not already familiar with Pride and prejudice, but in this I may be wrong. I’d be interested to hear the opinion of someone who has read P&P&Z who has never read Austen’s original.

Ninja Assassin is a balls to the wall movie that follows a character named Raizo, who just happens to be one of the deadliest assassins in the world. Taken from the streets as a child, he was transformed into a trained killer by the Ozunu Clan. He eventually becomes haunted by the merciless execution of his friend by the Clan, Raizo breaks free from them and vanishes. When (as we learn in flashbacks) he parted company after refusing to kill someone who tried to leave the clan, he became marked for death. He has been pursuing vengeance ever since. The key with a film like this is finding a lead actor who can carry the role with finesse. Rain is no Oscar-worthy talent, but he does have the charisma and presence needed to carry the film. One thing I really want to stress to those who haven’t seen this film yet is do not take it seriously. This movie isn’t over-the-top, it leaps over the top and continues to ascend to the point of pure lunacy, and that’s just within the first 10 minutes.

One thing I heard a lot of people complaining about in the theater was the use of dark light during action scenes. Yes, the dim lighting made it difficult to see what was going on in a few fight scenes; however, this darkness served the purpose of the concept, unlike the shaky cam trend, which is done for no purpose other than to convince you that what is going on in the scene is more interesting than it actually is. I was able to see more action in one of the “dark” scenes in Ninja Assassin than I did in the last two Bourne movies combined. Audiences are getting exactly what they pay for with Ninja Assassin, an unrelentingly violent and over-the-top action film that makes the most out of the fun it can wring out. My only complaint with this aspect was that Ninja Assassin’s script never clearly defines what a ninja is actually capable of at any given moment.  There was some supernatural things going on in the movie that had me scratching my head often times.

What we do know is that the ninjas in this film are a force to be reckoned with. True to the myth, they move silently in the shadows. They can also be found clinging to the ceiling like something out of Aliens. And once they arrive, no one is safe. The filmmakers have said that they wanted to update the ninja movie for the 21st century, and there they succeed.  After that first kill, none of the action is brought to life with any extended originality. Not to knock the films’ action right after I praised it but therereally is no fun, no fresh new ideas. Torrents of CGI blood and limbs lead to an easy comparison to the films of Ryuhei Kitamura, but the big point of comparison is energy and attitude. Sure, Kitamura’s Versus is an amateurish movie, but it has buckets of ideas and boundless energy, and just a little of each would have made Ninja Assassin infinitely more entertaining.

I mean, the only real reason to make this movie is if you have a notebook full of ideas for shredding the human body. So if you’re in the mood for action supported by a dull plot or stupid characters, Ninja Assassin might make for a bloody good time. I left the movie with my memory of it being largely a big blur. Ninja Assassin is a genre movie with accomplished, impressive fight choreography and visual effects. But the most important thng to remember in all of this is if we learned anything from Indiana Jones, it’s that bullets trump sharp objects every time. It good seeing ninjas getting some love instead of vampires nowadays but this isn’t the movie that is going to propel them into a statewide phenomenom.

Just when I thought ninjas and dance shows were all played out, I spot these funky ninjas dancing to James Brown on America’s Best Dance Crew. Sending the message out to the ninja community that violence is not the solution. Dance is.

What were the inspirations behind this image?
I was inspired by Zen gardens and other Japanese garden elements.

It looks like LEGO Universe will be full of plants and trees – and in their recent poll they show some very interesting ones. The trees will range incredibly in size, with the pictures below comparing the minifigure with the tree to help get a good understanding of how large some of them are.Your LEGO person can interact with trees, as well as many characters such as pirates using the trees as masts and other trees can camouflage ninjas!

“The other day, I walked into my chemistry class. I hate chemistry, so I’m usually pretty bored. But when I looked down at my desk, to my surprise, someone had drawn a dinosaur. Amused, I drew a ninja next to the dinosaur throwing death stars at it and wrote ‘Ninjas beat dinosaurs.’ The next day I went to class and saw that the person had drawn a pirate stabbing my ninja. Next to it was ‘Yeah, but pirates beat ninjas.’ Not to give up on our little war, I drew a zombie eating the brains of the pirate with ‘But zombies eat pirates.’ The day after that, I went to class and was awed to see that the person had smeared all the previous drawing away, and had drawn Voldemort with a wand saying Avadra Kedavra. Next to the drawing it said ‘The Dark Lord defeats all.’ I didn’t draw anything else. Touché, mystery drawer, touché. MLIA.”

This MLIA almost made me kill myself.

I think they’re onto us. All the crazed MLIA sadists out there are purposely doing this just to make us mad. That has to be it. They can’t think that people actually believe this, can they?!

With a movie sporting the most redundant title I’ve ever heard, I didn’t really expect much from it but of course I had to see it… I mean, it’s got ninjas. Not any old ninjas but ninjas who assassinate people which makes them ninja assassins(Isn’t that what a friggin ninja is anyway?). When I saw the trailer I pretty much decided that it was a sack of shit because the CG looked ridiculous and… well, it just looked gay. For some reason, the closer it got to the release date, the more I yearned for some corny, gory, martial arts action and I must say, I was not disappointed.

For fans of the movie Shoot ‘em Up, you must watch Ninja Assassin. They are both crazy ridiculous action movies. The difference is that this one is full of Asians, swords, throwing stars that apparently when thrown, move at the same velocity as a .50 round of ammunition and did I mention… ninjas? Oh yeah, and about a swimming pool full of blood distributed evenly throughout the entire movie. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a movie with this much blood. In one scene, a guys head gets slammed into the wall and it literally looked like he got shot with a fucking cannon when his face made contact with the wall. It gave me a boner. Not to mention, when is the last time you saw a cool ninja movie? Never? Exactly. Because there weren’t any before this one. And I don’t mean good like, “Hey, this movie has stellar acting and a superb script.” Are you fucking kidding me? I mean good like, “This movie gave me a huge erection due simply to the fact that it was probably the most violent movie I’ve ever seen and it was full of fucking NINJAS!” Actually, if you can imagine the violence from the video game Prototype transformed into a ninja movie then you probably have a decent idea of what to expect.

If that sounds cool to you then I recommend watching this film.

If that doesn’t sound cool to you then you’re probably like care bears and anal beads and should KYODT*.

Do I even need to say what’s wrong with this one?

Now, this MLIA actually IS average! I know, I know, I was shocked too. It’s average because licked a Fruit Roll Up and seeing that fortune could happen.

But that’s not what makes it stupid.

I know what you’re thinking; you’re thinking that the stupid part is the ninjas. Well, you were close.

The stupid part is that last repeat phrase. Will these MLIAers never learn? What is the one thing we don’t like at the end of a post? Class, can you tell me the answer?

Good! Hopefully these MLIAers will finally learn, that repeat phrases don’t make you cool, average, witty, funny, other, or all of the above. They just make you seem stupid.

If you are a fan of fantasy martial arts films, then keep reading, but if you like your martial arts to be realistic, then you may want to stop here. Ninja Assassin falls into the realm of what I call fantasy kung fu, which includes extraordinary feats of prowess, phenomenal leaps, mystical fighting skills and the ability for one person to take on a minimum of twenty guys at one time. I am a fan of fantasy kung fu, and during the 80’s, I swore I was a ninja. I even went so far as to have my mom dye my dad’s old karate outfit black, so my buddy Ken and I could do ninja style commando raids against each other and others. Yes, just like Star Wars, Star Trek and Godzilla, kung fu movies have helped shape who I am.

During the 80s, ninja movies swept the USA, and were frequently shown on HBO and I soaked them up with a passion. Movies like, Ninja Scroll, Chinese Super Ninjas, Wu-Tang vs. Ninja and Revenge of the Ninja are some of my favorite ninja style movies of all time. Each one of these films falls into the realm of what I label fantasy kung fu, so will Ninja Assassin rank up there as one of my favorites in the fantasy kung fu category? Yes and no. Ninja Assassin is short on story, but filled with some special effects fighting action scenes that will have you clinging to the edge of your seat. This film is rated R for a reason. I shouldn’t have any problem with horror films after the blood, guts and limbs I saw flying all over the place. Although it was filled with some cool action scenes, the fights weren’t as memorable as some of my favorites from the past. The kill moves were great, but the fights themselves just didn’t stand out to me. The coolest part to me was how they showed the ninjas appearing out of the shadows. What I would love to see would be a scene by scene remake of Chinese Super Ninjas using today’s technology now that would be a movie. The story itself was a classic revenge tale, but some aspects of the story didn’t make too much sense, and could have been tweaked with very little effort. Regardless, I will probably buy this one on DVD to increase the size of my kung fu collection. The movie is good, but not one of my all time favorites.

Sorry I missed yesterday’s newspaper. We had to leave early for Thanksgiving. But there’s a lot to do today. The newspaper is bursting of stuff to come! Who knew that for once it would be this way?

The recent “chill” on the island has gotten the island excited. To celebrate winter’s coming, the Ski Village is hosting a Snow Maze for members!

Coins for Change will be coming back on Dec. 10th! Get your bells out and get ready to help!

There are a lot of things going on today, but what about everything else?

OKAY! Putting yesterday aside, now for today’s news!  The snow maze has started, but before you go, take a lift up to the Ski Hill. There’s a free blue touge there, and a new sledding catalog!

Pretty sweet, but not as sweet as the snow maze! Head back down to the Ski Village and jump into the maze! If you want to cheat or are really lost, there’s a stand besides the maze entrance that shows you the right way to go! Just click on it and the red button and this map appears.

Take a few twists and turns.. uhm.. wait was it this way? No this way. Ah! Here we are! The end of the maze!

Go inside the strange cave with strange *hint* footprints outside and pick up a Yeti outfit!

After you leave the maze, go to the sport shop. There’s a new catalog for you to look at. I really think the green team is becoming popular..

Anyways, there’s only three secrets in this one. The green hockey outfit, hidden in the cheering green penguin, the green goaly outfit, hidden in another cheering green penguin, and the white pom-poms, hidden in the word, “ice”.

Is there anything I’m forgetting… Oh! Yes! On the walls of the Fire Dojo are now instructions and the legend, like in the regular dojo.

And another thing Club Penguin forgot to announce! We have new music in our igloos!

¡Hola a todos! Hoy, es 24 de Noviembre, y como nos prometió Club Penguin, tenemos el lanzamiento de una nueva edición de Card-Jitsu, llamada “Card-Jitsu Fuego“.

Como podrán ver, el Dojo Fuego, ya está terminado, y listo para ser el anfitrión de nuevos candentes combates ninja. Para comenzar a volverte un maestro fuego, deberás hablar con el sensei, como se hace en el Dojo normal.

Hablando con el sensei, que porta un nuevo traje ninja, te dará un nuevo Mazo de cartas, que te serán muy útiles para jugar.

Enseguida de ésto, te aparecerá un nuevo menú, para comenzar a jugar.

Y luego, podrás empezar a jugar el nuevo juego. El objetivo de éste juego, es convertirte en un maestro ninja fuego, que para lograrlo, tendrás que irte ganando los items del Traje de Fuego.

El primer item que conseguiras, lueo de ganar un par de batallas, serán las Sandalias Llama.

Después, conseguirás el Abrigo Magna.

Después la Máscara de Lava.

Y por último, el Casco Ardiente.

Para conseguir todos éstos items, tendrás que ir con el Sensei, y comenzar un nuevo juego. Escogiendo la modalidad “Obtener tu Traje de fuego”.

Y comenzarás a jugar contra otros contrincantes, en el nuevo estilo de juego, original de Card-Jitsu Fuego.

El escenario de juego, es el siguiente.

Tendrás que luchar contra otros penguins, el número de contrincantes puede variar de 1 contrincante, a 3 contrincantes.

Durante el juego, tendrás que mantener tus vidas, el máximo es 6.

Si pierdes tus energías, y llegas a 0, quedarás eliminado de la batalla.

Cuando logres bajar las vidas de todos los demas pingüinos, y tú todavía tienes vidas, serás el vencedor, y obtendrás puntos para ir obteniendo poco a poco los items del ninja fuego. Cuando tengas todos los items, te podrás vestir como un auténtico Ninja de Fuego.

Ahora, ve a hablar con el Sensei, y desafíalo a una batalla.

Si lo derrotas, ahora si, habrás dominado el elemento fuego. Y como recompensa, obtendrás la gema de fuego.
