As some of you may know, I’ve been extremely distracted lately, both from school work and pieces of music I need to complete. Part of this is due to my absolute infatuation with the new video game, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (I’ve played 50 hours so far, yes, I know, I’m irresponsible). It’s also due to my boredom with this semester as it slowly draws to a close. However, I’m really going to make more of an effort to post regularly, as I do enjoy having this at my disposal as an outlet for my thoughts.

Every Monday from now on, I’m going to be doing an update on Netflix movies, specifically, those that are available for streaming. I’ll be listing through a few I’ve watched the past week, as well as some new arrivals that I’ve seen already. I know how difficult it can be to find good films in the trash that is most of the Netflix streaming selection, so I’m hoping this can help a lot of you out in finding a flick to watch.

Limitless starring Bradley Cooper was just recently added to the instant queue, and as someone who saw it in theaters, I say it’s more than worth your time. While not a phenomenal film, Limitless presents an interesting plot about a man who discovers a drug that seemingly unlocks all of his potential. The movie teeters the line between good and great, and is definitely a solid addition to the Netflix streaming option.

Insidious is frightening for most of it’s running time, only falling (hard) near the end of the film. In a time where reasonably decent horror films are few and far between, Insidious is a great possession movie for a large group of people.

Rabbit Hole is a small independent film starring Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart, and tells the tragic story of the aftermath two parents must live through after the passing of their toddler. Rabbit Hole is a moving and emotional film supported by strong performances by it’s actors.

Lastly, I watched a documentary titled, “Carbon Nation”, last night that I found fascinating. While most films about global warming and our abuse of the environment / fossil fuels focus on the negatives, and in turn become depressing, Carbon Nation sports a healthy balance of discussing the problem currently facing humanity and what CAN and IS being done about it. This was a very refreshing film, as it restored my hope in our future in both an informative and entertaining way.

As I said before, all of these films are, as of this writing, available for instant streaming. That means if you have a Netflix account, you can stream these movies to your PC, Mac, Xbox 360, and/or Playstation 3.

Have you seen any of these films? Let me know what you guys think of this new idea!

Storyline

Based on a true story, Killer Elite pits two of the worlds’ most elite operatives – Danny, an ex-special ops agent ( Jason Statham) and Hunter, his long time mentor ( Robert De Niro) – against the cunning leader of a secret military society (‘Clive Owen’ ). Covering the globe from Australia to Paris, London and the Middle East, Danny and Hunter are plunged into a highly dangerous game of cat and mouse – where the predators become the prey.Written by Anonymous.

User Reviews:

Statham is the Best Thing About Killer Elite

In a dark hospital storage room Jason Statham thrashes elbow strikes and knees with Clive Owen in a vicious close-in all out brawl. You know this will not end well for Owen. Director Gary McKendry flawlessly orchestrates the brutal dynamics of the high impact action sequences. Unfortunately, he doesn’t sustain that metric of edgy intensity throughout “Killer Elite”. Then again, I saw “Killer Elite” to see Jason Statham kick some ass. I had seen the movie trailer where Statham tied to a chair elevates and pummels his unsuspecting adversary. I think Jason Statham is the most explosive martial arts star today. He is lean and muscular, moves like a dancer. He unleashes violence with lighting quickness and deadly force. As an actor he is likeably measured and very charismatic. Unfortunately, “Killer Elite” is not his breakthrough star vehicle. The movie provides formidable screen partners in Clive Owen and Robert DeNiro; however, this does not alter the end result.

“Killer Elite” is not a remake of the 1975 James Caan movie. Matt Sherring’s screenplay is based on Sir Ranulph Fiennes’s novel “The Feather Men”. The translated story, although based on events of the British SAS operations in Oman, is just not that interesting. This is the sad failing of “Killer Elite”. I was surprised in the prologue that the story was set in 1980, with the world possibly imploding into chaos. I had expected something more contemporary or updated. Statham is Danny, elite special ops agent; in Mexico with his mentor Hunter, the grizzled and world wary Robert DeNiro, to kill a bad guy. The mission unravels when Danny lapses: not killing the boy in the car, who is witness to the assassination. That attack of conscience nearly costs Danny his life. Game over. Danny retires, finding a modicum of peace in Australia and possibly love with beautiful Anne (gorgeous and strong willed Yvonne Strahovski).

Of course Danny is pulled off the farm in the Outback and back into the Game. Hunter is held hostage by Oman Tribal Leader Sheikh Amr (believable feeble and ruthless Rodney Afif) after a blown operation. The Sheikh will give Danny $6 million and free Hunter, if he kills the men responsible for the deaths of his three sons. The catch: They must confess to the murders on video and their demise must occur accidental—recall this is set in 1980. Failing to rescue Hunter solo, Danny seals his own fate. Danny soon realizes the reach may include his beloved Anne.

In the meantime, Danny’s vengeance pact lands on the radar of The Feather Men, a clandestine organization of former SAS players, whom are power brokers with oil interests in Oman. Their lead operative is Spike (powerful and intense Clive Owen), who is also former SAS. While investigating the deaths of their men associated with Danny, things just don’t calculate right. Owen effectively instills a code of honor and noble presence in Spike, so when he ignores the orders of his handlers and goes rogue it furthers the story and enrolls us.

Predictably, this serves solely as the conflict of wit and wills of Danny and Spike. Their climatic showdown is the only captivating element of “Killer Elite”, which also illustrates the downside of the overly complicated, often incoherent narrative. What kept me entertained were the impeccable fight scenes with Statham. I particularly loved the sequence on the stairwell, where Statham thrusts a kick to the chest, strikes the head, and judo throws the bad guy to the floor. That is just clean, elegant, and powerful. Too bad this metaphor fails to represent “Killer Elite” as a whole. Director McKendry possesses all the right elements and players. Something dilutes in the integration. There is never a visceral sense of danger or wonder in “Killer Elite”. And that is a real shame.

Eugene Robinson (Washington Post): Here’s how to negotiate, GOP-style: Begin by making outrageous demands. Bully your opponents into giving you almost all of what you want. Rather than accept the deal, add a host of radical new demands. Observe casually that you wouldn’t want anything bad to happen to the hostage you’ve taken – the nation’s well-being. To the extent possible, look and sound like Jack Nicholson in The Shining.

This strategy has worked so well for Republicans that it’s no surprise they’re using it again, this time in the unnecessary fight over what should be a routine increase in the debt ceiling. This time, however, something different is happening: President Obama seems to be channeling Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver. At a news conference last Wednesday, Obama’s response to the GOP was, essentially, “You talkin’ to me?”

Obama’s in-your-face attitude seems to have thrown Republicans off their stride….

….The stakes are perilously high, but Obama does have a doomsday option: If all else fails, he can assert that a section of the 14th Amendment – “The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law . . . shall not be questioned” – makes the debt limit unconstitutional and instructs him to take any measures necessary to avoid default.

Maybe that’s why, in this stare-down, the president doesn’t seem inclined to blink.

They’re two of the most iconic characters in media; Kratos from the God of War series and Dant

They’re two of the most iconic characters in media; Kratos from the God of War series and Dante from Dante’s Inferno, a game that was loosely based off the epic poem. Their games show a remarkable resemblance in that you’re a lone warrior fighting off hordes of monstrosities, and upgrading your vast arsenal of weapons and abilities along the way. Each game takes its anti-hero to the brink of death and madness as Kratos fights for vengeance and Dante tries to save the woman he loves. If you’ve played God of War and Dante’s Inferno, you’re well aware of just how capable both of these men are, but what if they fought each other?
Weapons
Without a weapon, I feel this duel would end quickly as Kratos tears Dante in half in the first round. And with weapons, Kratos can call upon a vast arsenal, while Dante’s limited to his two primary weapons: the Holy Cross and Death’s Scythe. Both are capable of shredding wave after wave of enemies apart, but I’m afraid this is an area where Kratos will have the upper hand. You see, while Dante only has the scythe and cross for close-quarters and ranged combat respectively, Kratos has gathered a rather intimidating cache of armaments to reap all sorts of pain on poor Dante.
Does he want to use Medusa’s severed head to freeze Dante before neatly bisecting him with the Blades of Athena? Or perhaps he’s in the mood to get up close and personal with a quick dash of the Hermes boots before pulverizing Dante with the Nemean Cestus? There are dozens of different ways for Kratos to vanquish his foes, making it impossible for Dante to predict what he’ll come at him with. Because of this, Kratos wins in the weapons category.

Trials
Both of these men have undergone some grisly trials to accomplish their missions. Kratos fought the Gods himself, finding out bits of his past along the way that only made him want to obliterate everything that was unfortunate enough to get in his way. He even escaped from the fiery pit of hell itself. Dante, however, chose to go to hell in order to save his woman and quickly began eviscerating every hellish denizen that tried to stop him as he went deeper into each of the nine grotesquely imagined circles of hell. Both of these men have done incredible things to achieve their goals, but the crown goes to Dante here. Sure, Kratos visited hell, but it was brief and extraordinarily difficult. Dante spent the entire game plunging deeper and deeper into the depths of hell before finally dueling with the Devil himself.

Dante

Enemies
A hack n’ slash beat ‘em up is only as good as the enemies you have to fight along the way. They can’t be too easy or it’s not a challenge, but they can’t be too overpowered, as it will make for a very frustrating game to play. Kratos’ adventures throughout the God of War series set him against legions of different monsters and even the Gods of Olympus. He’s fought everything from reanimated corpses to Minotaurs and everything in-between, but nothing’s been powerful enough to do anything but slow him down.
On the other hand, Dante also had to fight a seemingly endless army of hellish minions, and while the handful of bosses he had to fight along the way were just as intimidating as those found in the God of War series, they were also infinitely more grotesque. This is a tough call, but in the end Kratos wins this category because he had to vanquish creatures big and small, and in many fights he also had to contend with quite a few mini-bosses that were far more powerful than anything Dante encountered that wasn’t an actual boss fight. Plus, after half a dozen games each filled with a fair share of bosses to overcome, Kratos has far more experience.
Intelligence
So, we know they’re both more than capable of tearing an enemy apart, limb-by-limb. What about their intelligence? Their ability to think critically and solve the plethora of puzzles that try to stop them? Both the God of War and Dante have had to conquer some fiendishly designed puzzles and traps. In Dante’s Inferno, Dante had to think outside the box to be able to overcome some of the more difficult puzzles like the Gluttony Mirror and Heresy puzzles, and for the most part many of the puzzles he comes across are extraordinarily difficult. Some require quick thinking (and even quicker acting) while others require patience. In God of War Kratos has no shortage of puzzles to get past that require patience and perfect timing to solve. Overall, both games had fantastic puzzles that were seamlessly woven into their game’s fiction. Because of this, we have a tie here. It’s obvious both Kratos and Dante had to trounce a good number of puzzles proving they’re not just strong but intelligent as well.

Despite Kratos’ legendary standing in video games, this is a surprisingly tough call. Each of them have had to fight wave after wave of enemies that are thrown their way, survive the pits of hell, and solve complex puzzles. Both Kratos and Dante have taken out a large number of bosses on their travels. But in the end, the crown goes to Kratos because while they’ve both managed truly incredible feats, Kratos has been doing this for a much longer time. Maybe Dante will be more capable after he travels to hell a few more times, but as it stands right now, he’s still a novice compared to the undisputed king of the beat ‘em up games.

As promised, The ‘Tastic is proud to present the first-look trailers for all of CBS’s new shows… the few that are there due to CBS hardly canceling anything. Along with synopses and videos, in true TV-Tastic-style we’ll give you a preview assessment of each of the new series (in other words, we plan to pretty much rip most of them apart) letting you know what we think about them and if it’s worth your time to check them out this Fall and just to give everyone a heads up: on CBS this season: drama = good, comedy = bad.

Unforgettable stars Poppy Montgomery as Carrie Wells, an enigmatic former police detective with a rare condition that makes her memory so flawless that every place, every conversation, every moment of joy and every heartbreak is forever embedded in her mind. It’s not just that she doesn’t forget anything – she can’t; except for one thing: the details that would help solve her sister’s long-ago murder. Carrie has tried to put her past behind her, but she’s unexpectedly reunited with her ex-boyfriend and partner, NYPD Detective Al Burns (Dylan Walsh), when she consults on a homicide case. His squad includes Det. Mike Costello (Michael Gaston), Al’s right-hand man; Detective Roe Saunders (Kevin Rankin), the junior member of the team; and Detective Nina Inara (Daya Vaidya), a sassy, street-smart cop. Being back on the job after a break feels surprisingly right for Carrie. Despite her conflicted feelings for Al, she decides to permanently join his unit as a detective solving homicides – most notably, the unsolved murder of her sister. All she needs to do is remember. Ed Redlich, John Bellucci, Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly are executive producers for Sony Television Studios in association with CBS Television Studios.

The ‘Tastic Says: Well… we think it looks good, but it’s kind of hard to tell. We really do not like when instead of just getting a straight-up trailer on a new show, we wind up getting a hybrid trailer/cast & crew interviews video and that doesn’t really tell us a whole lot because the cast and crew always beam about the new shows they are in. What are they going to say? “Don’t watch my new show, it sucks?” So we will just go with what we know. It’s a cop procedural, alright, and you know how much we hate those, however, it has very unique twist on the main character and that could play out very well. Can’t really say for sure whether or not if we like this so we’ll go with “maybe.”

Henson in a crime thriller about a presumed dead former-CIA agent who teams up with a mysterious billionaire to prevent violent crimes by using their own brand of vigilante justice. Reese’s (Caviezel) special training in covert operations appeals to Finch (Emerson), a software genius who invented a program that uses pattern recognition to identify people about to be involved in violent crimes. Using state-of-the-art surveillance technology, the two work outside of the law using Reese’s adept skills and Finch’s unlimited wealth to unravel the mystery of the person of interest and stop the crime before it happens. Reese’s actions catch the attention of the NYPD, including homicide detective Carter (Henson), and Fusco (Kevin Chapman), a cop who Reese uses to his advantage. With infinite crimes to investigate, Reese and Finch find that the right person, with the right information, at the right time, can change everything.

The ‘Tastic Says: We were excited about this show from the moment we heard about it <a title="NEWSFLASH: CBS Picks up J.J.
The ‘Tastic Says: The show description sucks, however the trailer makes this show look very heart warming and charming. We can’t believe that we’re saying that we’re actually looking forward to this because it’s a chick show completely. This is the first trailer we’ve seen so far for the new season that actually falls into the category of “high-concept.” Seriously, can CBS do any wrong any more?

The ‘Tastic Says: Well, we obviously spoke to soon because this is awful but what are we expecting from the network that has made successful comedies out of both Two and a Half Men and Mike & Molly? What’s shocking is that this show will probably become a hit because CBS comedy audiences check their brains at the door regularly. Fish out of water, classic odd couple, world’s collide.. all the same typical crap with the same recycled jokes that sitcoms have been using for 30 years. Boring and uninteresting.

The ‘Tastic Says: Is it just us or is this not the same show as 2 Broke Girls except for it’s an odd-couple-with-dudes comedy. This looks only slightly better than 2BG and probably only because it has Kevin Dillon in it. It still looks like the typical awful sitcom, though.

The ‘Tastic Says: Yeah… we don’t know about this one. It seem like another dull and boring police procedural just shown from different rookie-cop perspective. The characters don’t seem to be very original at all and we don’t really see the necessity for another bland police procedural with nothing particularly unique about it (a cop show set in New York? No way! Get out of here!). We’ll give it a shot because Robert De Niro’s name being attached to it but we can’t promise sticking around for it for very long.
