TIRUCHI: Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) is gaining importance as a tool to prevent rather than detect defects and is a significant part of the overall quality plan of manufacturing, Chairman and Managing Director of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) B. Prasada Rao said here on Thursday.

This meant that there had to be more real-time evaluation and in-built feedback control system.

This was an area of great potential for large-scale automation and multi-disciplinary integration, Mr. Rao said, inaugurating the national seminar and exhibition on NDE organised by the Tiruchi Chapter of the Indian Society for Non-Destructive Testing (ISNT).

The Tiruchi Chapter is organising the prestigious conference after 17 years. The exhibition on the theme is ‘NDE in power industry’.

NDE professionals had a great role to play in the context of the nation’s requirement of uninterrupted power generation from all its utilities. NDE today was an integral part of manufacturing system for quality control through on-line monitoring, structural integrity assessment of finished products and in residual life assessment of structural systems like aged power plants.

Power plant equipment manufacturers wanted NDE to be speedy, delinking human dependence on interpretation. It had to be defect-preventive, easily recordable and retrievable and, of course, reliable and repeatable.

“If you could pack these within a reasonable cost, you would have certainly delighted your customers,” Mr. Rao told the huge gathering of NDE professionals.

“As users, we have the liberty to ask for the NDE to be done when the weld is hot or just cooling, without waiting time. We may sound prima facie ridiculous, but we would demand NDE to be done on inaccessible areas. NDE should be non-contact type, when required.”

There were realms like online ultrasonic testing of tubular butt joints that BHEL needed to move into.

There was great potential for further improvements in speed through reduced NDE exposure times and automated on-line systems.

Delivering the key-note address, A.V. Krishnan, Executive Director, BHEL, Tiruchi, said the survival yardsticks in these demanding times essentially translated into trouble-free service of power plants.

This was where quality and NDE professionals had a big role.

There was a lot of effort behind defining the quality of raw materials.

The NDE provided confidence on the raw material. The demands on the NDE in manufacturing processes were growing, and many NDE techniques complemented the integrity assurance systems.

Efforts to update some of the conventional NDE techniques by taking advantage of developments in microprocessors, computers and digital processing techniques should continue.

Dilip Takbhate, president, ISNT, said that the Asia Pacific Conference on NDT would be held on a grand scale in the year 2013 in Mumbai.

Briefing about NDE 2009, R.J. Pardikar, convenor, said 180 technical papers would be presented in four parallel sessions.

Chairman of ISNT, Tiruchi Chapter, V. Thyagarajan, said the NDE 2009 would set a national benchmark.

One of my blog reader from Kuwait has asked my opinion if he should choose new IITs or one of 3 top

One of my blog reader from Kuwait has asked my opinion if he should choose new IITs or one of 3 top NIT as he is expecting JEE/AIEEE ranking around 3000. He also plans to apply thru’ DASA scheme for NRIs if he can get very high PCM in CBSE XII.

The query took me by surprise; as it was not a question to be asked in our times; but everything has changed with a new national craze to create more new IITs/IIMs/NITs/AIIMS (now I can even expect a query like this – Should I join IIM-Shilong or IMT-Ghaziabad?)

Here are few facts about new IITs and ‘old NITs’ to make the decision making simpler:

1) First, let’s have the look at the closing ranks of the new IITs and top NIT/IIITs. Ask any reputed JEE coaching institute faculty and they would promptly say that the JEE and AIEEE ranks are quite proportionate and a person with AIEEE 3000 is supposed to get JEE 3300-3500. With this perspective in mind, following are the closing ranks for the institute’s best branches on offer in 2009

New IITs
IIT-Patna: closing rank 4299 (CSE)
IIT-Kota: 3192 (CSE)
IIT-Ropar: 3296 (CSE)
IIT Ghandinagar: 3195 (Elec)
IIT Bhuvaneshwar: 3343 (Elec)
(IIT Hyderbad not included in the above list as it commanded some respect in terms of closing rank, something like IT-BHU)

Top AIEEE colleges
IIIT- Hyderabad : 1067 (CSE)
NIT-Warangal: 1297 (ECE)
NIT- Trichy: 2410 (ECE)
If above facts do not clearly convey the message, consider another additional interesting information. The new IIT’s (Patna/Kota/Ropar) didn’t attract a single student below JEE AIR 3000. However, the top AIEEE colleges attracted many students below 1000 rank in AIEEE (IIIT Hyderabad-29, NIT Trichy-9, NIT Warangal- 8).
The reality is obvious- new IITs have not been accorded the rousing welcome of an ‘elite’ institute.

2) Demand and supply tool of economics shed a better light on situation- more the quantum of supply (in this case IIT/IIMs), lesser is the (brand) value. As if these 6 new IITs were not less to dilute the brand, two more (MP & HP) will start taking students from next year. The PM’s scientific adviser, Mr CN Rao was forthright in his comments when he called it a disaster to open so many new IIT in a single year. Follow complete story on below link at IBN

http://ibnlive.in.com/news/new-iits-are-a-disaster-says-pms-scientific-adviser/72935-3.html

3) The most important challenge with older IITs has been the lack of incentives for teaching faculty to stay put. Just think of remuneration competitiveness for a fresh PhD contractual staff in IITs with a salary of INR 28K pm. This is height of optimism on part of HRD minister that he can recruit the large number of brilliant people that IITs need with such peanut butter on offer. And the problem is accentuated more because IITs need about 8000 very good people to keep the flag of ‘elite’ class IIT flying.

The strike by IIT professors was brilliantly tagged by Mr Sibal as if the IIT profs are crying for money but in reality they were demanding respect, independence and career growth that is recently blanked out by putting a % cap on professors out of total faculty. In nutshell- destruction of IIT system by our polititians is ongoing and we should have good results in a decade or so. Frankly the only motivation IIT proffs are looking for is: stop de-motivating them.

Very soon new foreign univs will come calling to India (and some in PPP model) and then many of these caged birds will fly to new horizon- the turnaround into mediocrity of these ‘elite’ institutes is a foregone conclusion. Govt seriousness to keep a quality tab on these institutes can hardly be expected when the key motivating factor to create sooooo many IITs/IIMs/NITs/AIIMS is regional politics.

For the sake of completeness, I would like to point out that one of the new IIT (P) is being run from a polytechnic campus and this could have prompted PM’s adviser Mr Rao that it is nothing less than a disaster.

Conclusion
Commonly, tech colleges are ranked on the basis of student quality, faculty, infrastructure and placement record. When the new IITs are inferior in all these respect to top NITs, decision making between new IITs and top NIT/IIITs is not difficult at all. Good luck.

WBUT has got a new director who was previously in IIT…that’s the news. Then why is this

WBUT has got a new director who was previously in IIT…that’s the news. Then why is this disparity between the examination time? Odd semesters for the IITs are over by November while we have to wait till the last week of December. And this time its scheduled so late, we don’t even know when it gets over! All the renowned Tech Fests are arranged during this period and again we cannot participate full fledged because we have exams! Then how are we supposed to get the required exposure? They get an even sem break of about 3 months which can be utilized for loads of extra curricular and co-curricular activities and projects…but we get merely a month which is not enough to start any new venture. This is terribly unfair and impractical! This can be reason enough to mark a difference between the standards of Engineers produced from WBUT and the IITs and NITs. Why are we denied an equal footing?

I haven’t yet started to speak about the education standard and system! If we selected a particular stream, we have to stick to subjects of that stream only? Says who? Only WBUT or West Bengal maybe… IITans can choose from a varied range of additional subjects of their interest irrespective of the stream they belong to! A computer Science student can study physics…no harm in that! Why are we being deprived?

The other day I went to the Director’s Office when I found him speaking to somebody over the phone about why the logic and reasoning part of the students is poor as reported by the TCS. I’ll tell you the answer…its because teachers spoon-feed us. You know how we are taught programming? The teacher gives us xerox copies of written programs which students are asked to mug up. There’s no effort on the students’ part to try to develop a logic! Is this primary school? Is mug-and-vomit education? This is so very infuriating and frustrating! WBUTians are in great danger of extinction. Callousness will lead to more harm…

Which engg branch has the best prospects- is the most commonly asked question during July month ever

Which engg branch has the best prospects- is the most commonly asked question during July month every year when AIEEE counselling gets underway (and coincidentally my summer vacation to India occurs invariably in July every year and am asked this question frequently by parents from non-engg background). The question is obviously asked to know which branch will have better prospects after passing-out and beyond. Since most old IITs don’t have ECE branch (only IITG, IITR and IIT Kharagpur offer ECE ), the first preference of JEE toppers is CSE so much so that one could not get CSE in IIT-Bombay even with a JEE rank of 50 in 2008 (last rank to get CSE was 47 in IIT Bombay). For this reason we would limit ourselves to non-IIT colleges for choosing between CSE or ECE. Under DASA scheme for NRIs, NITs are the only colleges to opt for and this discussion suits such students very well.

We would discuss the topic in scientific manner and shall use weighted average method to select the right branch. To begin with, we would list down all important criteria/preferences, assign them weightage based on one’s background/aptitude and start assigming marks to the two branches. A sample exercise in the form of Excel sheet is available in the download section of this website. Please keep in mind, it is a very much individual based selection (I wonder why a candidate has to have a herd mentality in choosing branch when same thing is not done even for a mundane thing like selecting right cake for one’s b’day).

In right earnest, we start to list down the important factors based on one’s background

1) Your ‘plutonic’ love for the subject. Ask yourself if you like coding in general? Would you love to work in a field job? Please don’t give this factor 100% weightage because there could be other factors one may miss. Many kids want to be astronauts when they are young but eventually don’t become one due to unavailability of state-of-art technology in the field in the country and lack of enough opportunities available in other sectors. The aeronautical branch in itself has certain restrictions (including security clearance) if one plans to pursue MS in US (post 9/11). Similarly, food technology requires similar security clearance in US by FDA. Moreover, if you want to select a particular branch due to scholarships available in USA, then engg as discipline may not be the best thing as people easily get scholarship in fields like archeology and history.

2) Preference trend in the exam (eg. AIEEE) We live in real world and may not want to overlook what everyone else is doing and try to understand why they are doing this. Don’t give this factor 100% weightage as that will be a true herd mentality. The preference trend between the 2 branches keeps changing. In 2008 and 2009 AIEEE counselling, ECE has taken over CSE (67% ECE, 33% CSE for first 25 seats filled in NIT’s.) However, please keep in mind that this trend is different in south India and north India. As per AIEEE counselling pref of 2008, north India NITs (like Allah, Jaipur, Kuru) had CSE branch filling-up first than South Indian NITs. Generally speaking north Indians and US bound candidates prefer CSE marginally over ECE.

3) Efforts required in College to get a good CGPA grade. Generally, CSE is easier branch compared to ECE. Think if you would like to pursue MBA , than one can get more time for CAT prep by choosing CSE.

4) Preference for Govt/PSU/Teaching jobs. Many more govt/PSU companies visit campuses to recruit ECE engineers as compared to CSE. If you prefer comfort and job security of PSU, ECE is a better branch. Moreover, competition is not very tough for teaching jobs in ECE as most IITs don’t have this branch.

5) Placement, Average salary and importantly av salary of top 25% in the branch. Don’t stop after checking that both branches have 100% placement and almost same av salary. Look at the av salary of top 25% of each branch in any college. My analysis of one of the top NIT brings out the fact that CSE had better offers above 8 lacs per annum as compared to ECE. However, this analysis can be misleading as the bottom 25% of CSE guys had lower salary than ECE guys. So if one has fire in the belly and can take the competitors by collar, CSE can be highly rewarding. For lower rankers., competition is very very tough as software jobs for lower profiles are hunted by one and all (including BCA/MCA/BSc/xyz certified). If you choose CSE branch, make sure the college is one of the top (say a good NIT) since otherwise you may be one of the 2500 persons called on single day for off-campus interview and rue why cos. entertain non-CSE people in software field.

6) Job Openings in Real Indian Corporate. IT sector is the biggest employment provider in India and many students other than CSE also end up in IT industry. After finishing graduation, most of ECE engineers work in software companies as there are no sufficient companies who work in core areas of Electronics and Electrical Engineering. The top IT companies with offices in India like Adobe, DE Shaw, Net App, Microsoft, Yahoo don’t hire ECE or set the CGPA by 1 point higher for ECE than CSE branch. Therefore, think hard over logic in going for ECE courses if one is going to end up in IT sector. India has more software companies than any other companies. These companies pay good salaries and also give a chance for foreign assignments that will further enhance your personal and professional skills.

7) College Facilities for ECE & CSE. While CSE branch does not need hi-fi labs, the available infrastructure and professors for ECE branch are not very encouragings (including in top NITs). After doing ECE B Tech don’t think anyone will allow one to come near Ipod or Iphone design center. For that one needs to do atleast MS in USA in good college as India doesn’t produce and/or require all these experts in great number.

Conclusion:In the end, CSE offers rewards for high fliers and mundane jobs for low fliers. ECE branch offers good jobs in Govt/PSUs. Most IT companies don’t differentiate between the two branches for placement (execpt the very top software cos). In the above analysis, I have tried to list down important factors in choosing right branch for you. However, each individual has to make their own decision and the sample Excel sheet in the download section of this website can help you to make a sound judgement.

Good luck with your admissions. In any case, try to be best whatever course you pick up and make your parents proud after completing the course.

We’ve had a lot of focus lately on the PR side the last few posts, so with Thanksgiving on Thursday, I though we’d swing back to the straight sports side of things. Thanksgiving Day is pretty much strictly turkey and NFL, but the rest of the weekend has plenty of other options to keep you on the couch and out of the malls. To go along with a full slate of NFL games on Turkey Day, we have College Baskeball FeastWeek, big rivalry games in college football and to wrap up the sports weekend a marquee Monday Night Football match-up.

As usual the NFL kicks things off on Thursday afternoon. We have Green Bay at Detroit, Oakland at Dallas and the nightcap with the Giants traveling to Denver on the NFL network. Not the greatest lineup, but hey, its tradition and we love it.

FeastWeek in college basketball is also quickly becoming a tradition. The weekend includes a host of tournaments across the country with some of the top teams in college basketball getting early season tests. The lineup includes the NIT Season Tip-Off semifinals and finals featuring Duke and UConn, the 76 Classic featuring Butler, West Virginia and Minnesota and the Old Spice Classic featuring Michigan, Xavier and Marquette.

The weekends slate of college football games includes some of the top teams in the country looking to avoid the late season slip-up against their main rivals. The top games include #1 Florida hosting Florida State, #2 Alabama heading to Auburn, #9 Pittsburgh traveling down Rt.70 to take on West Virginia and a nice mid-major match-up between #19 BYU and #21 Utah.

Last but not least we have a huge Monday Night Football game when the New England Patriots, the last team to undefeated during the regular season, travels to New Orleans to face the Saints, one of two remaining unbeaten teams in the NFL.

Think you can keep up with that schedule while the rest of the suckers fight the crowds at the mall? So all I want to know now is, which Thanksgiving Weekend sports are you most excited to watch?

Too bad.

Only one non-tournament game features ranked teams, and it’s Minnesota Butler. Yuck.

Duke is on a path to play UConn for the NIT Tip Off title in the Garden Friday night. Two days before that, Arizona State and LSU will put up respective tests before falling in the semis.

None of e games were on the staff’s schedule, because we didn’t know what the results would be.

Alright, look. I’m not a fan of IU basketball, and I have lived in Indiana my entire life. My family is from Ohio, So I am a Buckeye and recently I have gotten use to heartbreak. The same thing should be done by IU fans.

IU is one of the most storied college basketball programs in history. We get that. I’m not here to bash the program just because I’m not a fan. I’m here to bash the fans.

Bob Knight brought you glory and Mike Davis screwed it up. Now you’re rebuilding. Do you know what rebuilding means? It means you weren’t good last year. You barely fielded a team. You’re not going to be good this year and probably wont even make the NIT. You’re on a plan. The Tom Crean plan. He’s a great coach and needs four years to fix this thing like most new coaches do. He has it worse than most, however, because he is literally building a team from scratch. There was nobody when he showed up. They were kicked off the team or transferred out of Bloomington.

Despite all of these issues, arrogant IU fans still talk about their team like it’s the 80’s and early 90’s. It’s not. You’re not good. When you lose a game you shouldn’t be mad, you should expect it. You have good young talent, and good recruiting classes coming the next couple of years. Be patient.

The sooner you realize you’re one of the bottom dwellers in the Big Ten right now, the sooner you’re going to be patient and let Crean do his thing. The days of down home country Indiana boys going to IU and getting to the Final Four are over. Those kids are going to Purdue. Be happy with what you’ve got. Cheer on the kids who are there and hope you make the NIT this year.

As much as I don’t like to say it, Crean will have you back on top soon.

Celeste is a cute pleated skirt. Simple high wasted skirts in bold colors are very popular right now and go easily with all body shapes and most tops. I think I would have coupled this particular skirt with a simple top and cardigan but Celeste is always cute!

T’he trobat a faltar, molt, poc, regular… he tingut per escollir.

Altfel ar fi facut-o pana acum, in conditiile dictaturii capitalist-comuniste anti-romanesti.
