Recently, I met the highly personable, enthusiastic Dan Niven, manager of the Mills Music Store in Lynnwood. Turns out that he plays trombone in the Alumni Band at the Husky football games. It’s organized by the Husky Marching Band Alumni Association (HMBAA), www.hmbaa.org. I’m a “Hum’-ba” member, too, and am looking forward to playing at the Arizona game at Husky Stadium on 10 October. “See you at the Horseshoe!” he says to me. At the store, there are studios where instructors teach private lessons. For those students who prefer it, we can meet there for our sessions. It is located at 20505 Highway 99 (east side of the road), telephone 425-775-6500. Great place to rent or buy your instrument, music books, supplies and accessories. So I happen to be re-reading Larry Niven / Jerry Pournelle “Footfall”, and I am struck by this passage:

“…as far as I know, though, Michael is the only quick and dirty way we have to get a battleship into space.”

Otra de las galas benéficas de primavera de la ciudad de Nueva York tuvo lugar el pasado 13 de Mayo en el Hotel Plaza. La recaudación estuvo en torno a los 3 millones de dólares, que serán destinados a los programas para la investigación del cáncer del Centro Oncológico Memorial Sloan-Kettering. Hah! Soon is an underestimation! My final and last look for my DP yumyum cotton tee purchase. I definitely had fun and I loved thinking up of ways to wear just one similar top. Just to emphasize yet again, this top is the love!

This final look leans more towards the tomboyish side of me — Instead of wearing the prim that causes the bubble shaped of the tee, I took it out and wore it as a sweater like top. DP yumyum adds really detailed texturing on the bottom to make it look like a realistic sweater, so the designer definitely did think of people who would rather wear the design without the added prims. I hope you guys like this!

Those shoes are by PornStar — a small shop right now but oh my what quality! The design features a high top version or a folded version. Scripted with such a vast variety of color changes — there’s no end to the combinations! This has to be one of my favorite buys so far… so go check em out ^^

The series of showcasing DP yumyum’s cotton tee continues!
This look implements the same few pieces I did in the previous look, although this time the usage of colors and the overall pieces are chosen to reflect a more happy playful spirit. Far more relaxed but still maintaining femininity. My final look will be uploaded soon and it will look very different — promise!

One thing I specially would like to note from the look is that adorable scarf. This is a piece from :sey – they just had a grand opening not too long ago and the Japanese store is loaded with so many staple pieces! I love how this scarf comes in both short and long options, there’s even scripts to change the textures. The store itself carries a lot of male jackets, accessories; but the girls have some adorable shoes for sale, plus the clothes are just adorable and different. Definitely do give the place a look and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how much there is to add to your inventories!

I am fairly new to SL, and even more a novice at SL Fashion. I’ve learned about designers and clothes making by surfing blogs and websites. In world, I’ve attended classes, read HUD books, flipped through magazines so that now I can remember a couple of names. They were two names that I remembered for weeks, waiting for the shops to reopen after their long winter hiatus. One of them reopened some days ago. The natural course of events followed.

First step My Account on secondlife.com, for some fuel, because great things are rarely free. Next, check the collection in the search engine, teleport, wait for the room to rez and for my hair to appear on the top of my head…. The shop eventually appears, but not my hair.

Now I have to find a piece that I love and that I haven’t see on everyone yet… that’s hard. Something not too extravagant… that’s hard. Something not too expensive…. I might get away with that one! And then, ouh la la, I’ve got my first NiVEN piece! I don’t know if it feels smooth and soft or anything, but I know it looks “magnifique”!

If you got a bit of free time, go by the B@R Haute Couture shop, and look for the lucky chair. These clutches are to die for and come in 5 different colors (black, yellow, pink, red and cyan). There are a lot of wild letters, so in 5 to 10 minutes you should get a prize. Otherwise, I’ve got a couple of doubles that are transferable that I could give. But you would be missing out on all the fabulous B@R stuff in the shop, one of my favorite places to shop!

¿Qué puedo decir? Miracles still happens…

Back during my science fiction formative years, the series that perhaps most enthralled me was Larry Niven’s “Known Space”. Something of a guilty pleasure: I’m well aware of Niven’s weaknesses as a writer and the holes in the Known Space scenario… but I’ve never stopped enjoying it.

It was a thrill when the first sequel to Ringworld came out, and I for one actually liked it better than the first book, more tightly plotted and with more dramatic tension. The Ringworld Throne didn’t make as good an impression, but I read Ringworld’s Children anyway and, surprise, liked it.

I never got into the Man-Kzin Wars. Not too sure why, but maybe this demonstrates it was not just Known Space I liked, but Niven writing about Known Space.

So I didn’t have a lot of hopes for Fleet of Worlds and Juggler of Worlds, two new Known Space novels Niven wrote in collaboration with Edward M. Lerner (an author I’ve read no other works by). Library books are still free, though, so I checked them out. I enjoyed them. I’d say they both read like Niven at his near-best; neither has any really big new oh-my-god ideas of the sort Niven’s good at, but the stories are good.

Juggler is particularly unusual, in that the first 260 pages are stories we’ve heard before. Twice. Sort of.

Some years ago Niven published Crashlander, a collection of all the Beowulf Shaeffer stories along with two new ones: “Procrustes” and “Ghost”, the latter a framing story for the collection; in these we learn some of the things we thought we knew from the old stories were not the whole truth.  In Juggler we read the same stories all over again — but from the point of view of Sigmund Ausfaller. Then we get “The Soft Weapon” from the point of view of Nessus. And once again we find out things are not quite what they seemed. Rashomon for Known Space?

You have to wonder how much of this Niven’s had in the back of his mind for years.  “Our motives coincide here,” Nessus says in “The Soft Weapon”, “I cannot explain at this time”; nor did Niven explain what business Nessus had with the Outsiders just before then. Well, now we find out.

It might seem strange and dull to revisit these stories through the eyes of a character who wasn’t even present (or even mentioned) in some of them, but it works: what Niven and Lerman are doing is using these episodes to tell the story of Ausfaller’s career and his obsession with discovering the secrets of the Puppeteers. In the last quarter of the book they do move into new territory, picking up after Fleet leaves off in a three-way, worlds-threatening confrontation between humans, Puppeteers, and Outsiders.

The two books were published about a year apart (October 2007 and September 2008) and clearly there’s more coming — the last page is obviously setting up a sequel.  Junkie that I am, I’m keeping an eye out for it.

Dubtava si era escaient comentar una obra apareguda el 1970 i que no és cap novetat, sinó ja un clàssic. Hi han contribuït dos motius: primer, que en rellegir-la (la primera vegada va ser a finals del 1991), m’ha sorprès la frescor i la vitalitat; segon, que en el bloc encara no s’ha glossat cap obra de ciència ficció.

Per aquelles coses del màrqueting, a la contraportada una cita de l’Arthur C. Clark afirma que és el llibre que recomana sempre que algú vol començar a llegir ciència ficció. Sense ànim de comparar-me amb el ja desaparegut Clark, quan penso en la ciència ficció literària, les dues obres que automàticament em vénen al cap sempre són la La Fundació, d’Asimov, i Mundo Anillo.

El llibre relata el descobriment d’un immens món buit a anys llum de la Terra, el viatge que emprenen éssers de diversa procedència per a explorar-lo i conèixer-lo. La tripulació interplanetària la formen en Lluís Wu, un terrícola de dos-cents anys; la Teela Brown, una jove terrícola enamorada d’en Lluís; l’Interlocutor d’Animals, un kzin, ferotge espècie alienígena amb fesomia felina que temps enrere va intentar conquerir la Terra. I en Nessus, de l’espècie dels titerots, civilització tecnològicament molt avançada i psicològicament molt complexa.

I és el tractament psicològic dels personatges el que captiva d’aquesta història. La seva heterogeneïtat, amb matisos admirables, està molt ben plantejada des dels diàlegs i exposada en les reaccions davant les circumstàncies. Són força atractius els dos alienígenes. En certa manera, encarnen allò que rebutgem, fins i tot reneguem, de l’espècie humana, però que per altra banda potser també admirem. En Larry Niven és llicenciat en Psicologia i Matemàtiques; sembla, doncs, que en sap treure profit. Els avenços tecnològics han trobat en la ciència ficció una generosa font d’inspiració. Però el que sobta és veure que l’any 1970 en Niven va donar a conèixer uns éssers humans d’un futur bastant llunyà amb trets característics als quals, en línies generals, sembla que tendeix la humanitat d’avui dia i que a principis dels setanta potser no eren més que hipòtesis.

La història s’articula sota un fort substrat científic. Per als neòfits i no tan neòfits, les explicacions tècniques, científiques i astronòmiques poden aclaparar fins al punt d’atiar el prejudici que molts lectors tenen vers la ciència ficció. No en va, Ringworld es considera genuí representant de la hard sci-fi o ciència ficció dura. Però també hi ha molta gent que, davant de casos com aquest, s’engresca encara més i provoca, segons el mateix autor, que s’hagin d’escriure continuacions per acabar d’explicar determinats fets, corregir imperfeccions o completar inexactituds en els càlculs. En Niven ha publicat, si no m’equivoco, tres seqüeles més. Poc partidari de segones i terceres parts quan em trobo davant d’una gran obra, més que res per estalviar-me decepcions com les continuacions de Dune, posem per cas, ara com ara m’he limitat a rellegir la primera. Això sí, sense descartar res.

Wohl jedem von uns sind sie schon einmal aufgefallen: Fehler in typischen Sciencefiction Geschichten.
Dabei sollte eigentlich schon vom Namen des Genres her klar sein dass man sich bei all der Fiktion doch bitte auch ein wenig an reale Wissenschaft halten sollte.
Viele dieser (oft billig produzierten) Geschichten zeugen aber noch heute vom imho eigentlich überlagerten Vorurteil dass SciFi generell nur Einheitsbrei mit Weltraummonstern, schlampigen Geschichten, einer typischen Heldenfigur und ein paar hübschen, spärlich bekleideten Frauen sein muss.
Diese Meinung stammt wahrscheinlich noch aus den Anfangszeiten des Genres (oder zumindest als es erstmals so eingeordnet wurde) als diese Geschichten in der Tat hauptsächlich billig produziert als Groschenhefte auftauchten und eher der seichten Unterhaltung dienen sollten.
Da es ziemlich schwer ist, physikalisch korrekte, realistische Einschätzungen der Zukunft zu bringen, dies alles so ganz nebenbei noch spannend zu erzählen und mit glaubhaften Charakteren zu versehen (an den beiden letzten Bedingungen scheitern bereits in anderen Genres die meisten Autoren, warum sollte das hier besser sein und dann auch noch abstrusen physikalischen Gesetzen entsprechen?) kann man die vorhandenen Fehler meiner Meinung nach in verschiedene Gruppen aufteilen:

Die erste Gruppe wären Punkte bei denen der Autor nicht im geringsten auf bestehende Physik achtet wenn sie einen dramatischen Vorgang erschweren würde. Meist hat der Autor nach einer anderen Lösung gesucht, doch keine einfache gefunden.
Das klingt auf den ersten Blick nach der schlechtesten Möglichkeit, meiner Meinung nach muss das jedoch nicht unbedingt der Fall sein. Natürlich ist vieles aus diesen Geschichten unmöglich und kann mit ein wenig Hintergrundwissen leicht verlacht werden, doch die Autoren konzentrieren sich an diesen Stellen dafür oft auf die Dinge die sie eher können und erzeugen Geschichten die vom Erzählstil und den geschilderten Vorgängen her äußerst fesselnd wirken.
Oft entstehen daher große Meisterwerke die ohne derartiges nicht möglich wären und man sollte bei all der Kritik nicht vergessen dass vieles aus diesen Geschichten zwar völlig unmöglich sein mag, dies aber in vielen anderen Genres völlig normal und gar erwünscht ist.
Es hat sich ja auch noch nie jemand aufgeregt, dass Sauron, die Ents und wohl 3/4 aller anderen Wesen in Tolkiens Geschichten aus Mittelerde in der Realität unmöglich wären.
Gute Beispiele für derartige Fehler finden wir z.B. wenn im Skylark-Zyklus von Eduard Elmer “Doc” Smith ansehen wie interstellare Reisen ermöglicht werden: -> Einstein hat sich geirrt, wir brauchen nur immer weiter zu beschleunigen und werden schneller als das Licht. (Ein recht häufiger Ansatz bis man dazu übergegangen ist via “Wurmloch” oder “Hyperantrieb” zu reisen da dies schwerer zu widerlegen ist.)

Die Zweite Gruppe der Fehler sind wohl Stellen die dem Autor gar nicht bewusst waren, er versuchte sich möglichst an alle bekannten Theorien und Gesetzmäßigkeiten zu halten doch ihm ist ein Fehler unterlaufen.
Die meisten dieser Fehler sind eher unwichtig und werden von denjenigen die sie entdecken meist nur belächelt. Aber immerhin hat man etwas bemerkt was anderen nicht aufgefallen ist, daher werden derartige Fehler oft bekannter als Stellen die sehr offensichtlich sind.
Natürlich gibt es auch offensichtliche Fehler in diesem Bereich, dies ist dann aber auch die Stelle an der uns das Vorurteil der billig produzierten SciFi wieder einholt. Wenn sich eine Person mehr diese Geschichte durchgelesen hätte bevor sie veröffentlicht wurde, hätte der Fehler evtl. behoben werden können.
Beispiel: Um die Ringwelt von Larry Niven wurde zeitweise viel Aufhebens gemacht, als ein paar Physiker das beschriebene Gebilde durch gerechnet haben und feststellten dass eine derartige Welt nicht lange existieren würde da sie keinen stabilen Orbit behalten würde. Ringwelt war davon abgesehen in vielen Aspekten ein physikalisch sehr korrektes Werk und Niven hat in Teil 2 dieser Buchfolge auch auf die Instabilität reagiert und eine komplette Geschichte aufgebaut in der die Probleme wie auch ihre Lösung erklärt wurden (Die Bekanntheit dieses Fehlers soll angeblich soweit gegangen sein dass Studenten am MIT davon 1971 auf den Fluren gesungen hätten. Eine weitere Art Fehler sind “die Unvorhersehbaren”, damit meine ich Fehler die der Autor gar nicht bemerken konnte, weil die ihnen entgegenstehenden Gesetzmäßigkeiten zum Zeitpunkt der Veröffentlichung noch gar nicht bekannt waren.
Mit diesen Fehlern will ich mich gar nicht all zulange aufhalten, sie kommen natürlich ab und zu vor und sind nahezu unmöglich zu verhindern.
Ein Beispiel: Die Oberflächengestallt der Venus in der Perry Rhodan-Reihe. Zum Zeitpunkt des Erscheinens der ersten Hefte war schlicht noch nicht genug über die Beschaffenheit bekannt, dass die Autoren also daneben lagen, war zu erwarten.
Es sei mir nur noch die Randbemerkung gestattet dass es erstaunlich ist wie selten diese Fehler in manchen Klassikern vorkommen und wie genau manche Werke, z.B. manches von Jules Verne, an erst später entdeckten Prinzipien und Technologien liegen. (Allerdings hat auch Verne Fehler gemacht, es würde z.B. wohl den wenigsten Personen gefallen in einem Projektil, per Kanone auf den Mond geschossen zu werden…)

Als vierte Art der Fehler würde ich Dinge zählen, in die man sich über Umwege hinein gesteigert hat, diese Art der Fehler ist in Büchern noch relativ selten gewesen, nahm mit der Verbreitung von längeren Fernsehserien oder monatlich erscheinenden Fortsetzungsromanen immer mehr zu.
Gute Beispiele [Update]wären hier z.B. fallen mir im Moment leider nicht ein, aus diesem Grund hatte ich diese Stelle bereits leer gelassen, werde nochmal ne Nacht drüber schlafen und hoffentlich etwas nachliefern[/Update]

Die fünfte und letzte Art der Fehler sind diejenigen die ich am meisten hasse. Sie sind erst mit der Verbreitung von Film und Fernsehen in größeren Mengen aufgetreten und entstehen entweder aus Budgetgründen (egal welchen Effekt man darstellen will, bei einem Buch macht das Preislich nicht wirklich große Unterschiede) oder um auf dem Bildschirm einen schöneren Effekt zu verursachen.
Für die erste Variante finden wir ein Beispiel wenn wir uns Ansehen warum bei Star Trek der Teleporter genutzt wurde: Landungen auf Planeten via Raumschiff darzustellen wäre zu teuer gewesen. Der Teleporter, welcher sich in der SciFi derartig festgesetzt hat, ist also (zumindest sein massives Auftreten) nur ein Nebeneffekt einer Sparmaßnahme. Der Fehler liegt darin dass es dank der Heisenbergschen Unschärferelation unmöglich wäre die Subatomaren Teilchen gleichzeitig exakt bezüglich ihres Impulses als auch Position zu erfassen. (Dazu muss man aber noch sagen dass a) dies nach neueren Erkenntnissen evtl. gar nicht nötig wäre und b) mir die Art der Autoren damit umzugehen sehr gefallen hat: “Wir haben ein Gerät das diese Dinge ermöglicht: Einen Heisenbergkompensator!” eine sehr schöne Möglichkeit den Fans klar zumachen dass es sich trotz allem nur um Fiktion handelt und man nicht alles auf die Goldwaage legen sollte)
Für die Zweite Variante Beispiele zu finden ist wohl der einfachste Teil dieses Artikels. Wir alle kennen Filme in denen Laser mit lautem Zischen durch den (luftleeren!) Weltraum gefeuert werden oder Raumschiffinsassen trotz angeblich vorhandener Beschleunigungskompensation bei dem leichtesten Angriff durch die Gegend geworfen werden.
Diese Fehler finde ich besonders ärgerlich da sie als einzige bewusst gemacht werden UND die Geschichte nicht voran bringen. Man kann sie meiner Meinung nach damit vergleichen dass ein Koch eine schon bis zur Schmerzgrenze gesalzene Mahlzeit noch mit besonders hübschen Salzkristallen dekorieren will. Es mag am Ende schöner aussehen, aber essbarer wird es dadurch nicht!

Sollte sich wirklich jemand den Aufwand zugemutet haben diesen endlosen Rant durchzulesen freue ich mich natürlich wie immer über Meinungen und Kommentare.
(In diesem speziellen Fall wäre es schon interessant zu erfahren ob das überhaupt jemand auf sich nehmen wollte.)

Je veux bien, moi ! Mais elle commence à peser, cette tête, à force de la remplir, sans opportunité de la vider !

J’envisage d’ailleurs sérieusement l’achat d’un nouvel espace neuronal de stockage pour matière grise. Le cliché typique de toutes les facultés de droit de toutes les universités du monde, c’est : “Il faut beaucoup apprendre par coeur“. Mes fesses, oui ! C’est du bourrage de crâne. Pire qu’apprendre le vocabulaire et la grammaire allemands.

Juste pour illustrer ce que je ressens, voici une image à laquelle je viens de penser. L’oie qu’on gave, en lui administrant de force la nourriture, de façon à en retirer un magnifique foie gras (que je n’apprécie pas d’ailleurs, non par conviction et sympathie pour l’animal, juste à cause du goût). Figure toi que je fais la même chose avec moi-même. Mais pas avec la même partie de mon corps. En l’occurrence, c’est mon encéphale que je bourre de la sorte. Et le pire, c’est que si on me tue après, on en tirera rien à manger. Si c’est pas malheureux… Est-ce donc bien utile que je continue à goinfrer mon moteur ?

Si seulement ça pouvait mener à ça… Maison, piscine, champagne, et fille comprise, évidemment.

Dit en termes moins pommé, c’est la conférence d’ouverture de la WWDC par notre Big Boss à nous !

Nouvel iPhone, nouveaux Macs, (re)nouveau du service en ligne, un “nouveau” système d’exploitation (Mac OS X 10.6 “Snow Leopard” ?)… Bref, de quoi me remonter le moral en ces temps mots roses.

Alors, vivement lundi soir, et merde pour l’après-midi et les jours suivants !

PS : finalement, hors-la-loi, ça paie aussi non ? En tout cas, ça permettrait de répondre au téléphone d’un cerveau d’une manière moins conventionnelle, moins “smart”. Regarde :

And now, a brief list of things produced by fellow humans I enjoyed reading, hearing and watching in the past few weeks.

Books:

• Larry Niven’s Ringworld

  I was drawn in by the concept of a ringed artificial habitable structure orbiting a star — one of the inspirations for the Halo universe. I was pleasantly surprised to find not only did Niven deeply expand upon the technical considerations of such a structure, he managed to weave a captivating story alongside. Niven has an odd, matter of fact writing style but his unique alien characters clearly punched through his plain style.

• Orson Scott Card’s Speaker for the Dead, his sequel to Ender’s Game

  I was pleasantly surprised with Speaker. It took an abrupt turn from Ender’s Game, which was primarily a space-war novel. Speaker is a philosophical anthropological ‘what if’ tale — what if humans colonized a planet with an existing sentient species. I found it very rewarding.

• Reddit.com – best described as “the new Digg.”

  Like Digg, Reddit accepts submissions of web links. But, unlike Digg, clicking on a link in Reddit doesn’t lead to the ‘link metadata page’ before actually bringing you to the external site — it just links to the external site. Reddit encourages you to read the ‘link metadata page’ by way of its perfectly threaded and moderated comments. This encourages thoughtful and complete discussion, whether the external link in question is a silly picture of a dog or a depressing world affairs story.

  I enjoy the discussions, but I recognize a significant bias toward libertarian viewpoints. (Ron Paul has an unusually high share of voice on the site. Frequent posts argue for returning to the gold standard.)

• James Howard Kunstler speaks about the tragedy of suburbia. I feel similar emotions as he expresses, but never have I felt comfortable expressing it publicly in such a way. Watching his speech is a pleasure as he strongly emphasizes our nation’s real tragedy: poor city planning.

  Choice quote, “…When you think about those young men and women who are over in places like Iraq, spilling their blood in the sand, and ask yourself, ‘What is their last thought of home?’ I hope it’s not the curb-cut between the Chuck-E-Cheese and the Target store, cause that’s not good enough for Americans to be spilling their blood…“

Radio:

• Selected Shorts – Odd Couples. I loved the first story of this program, Aimee Bender’s “The Meeting.” It starts around 7 min, 30 seconds. (MP3 Link)
• Fareed Zakaria on KQED’s Forum speaks about post-Americanism — what is America’s world role now that it’s waning as a super-power? I was also inspired by Mr. Zakaria’s array of statistics pointing toward the positive direction, a nice break from news stories I usually see in the media about the falling of the sky.
