Ich nehme eine aktuelle Veröffentlichung eines meiner Archivbilder in der F.A.Z., einer überregionalen Tageszeitung, zum Anlaß für einige Überlegungen zum Markt für Bilder. Denn das Bild oben, das gibt es so sicher auch royalty free oder gar bei Microstock. Denn das ist ein klassisches “Butter-und-Brot”-Motiv.

Warum aber verwendet eine Zeitung das Bild eines “klassischen” Fotojournalisten, der sein Bildmaterial über Mecom und APIS rights managed anbietet und dafür auch das entsprechende Honorar erhält? Warum greift eine große Zeitung wie die F.A.Z. nicht auf die Angebote im Billigsegment zurück?

Ich glaube, die Gründe ganz gut zu kennen.

Professionell gemachte Medien bevorzugen die Kooperation mit professionellen Fotografen oder Bildagenturen!

Warum?

Ganz einfach: weil der Profi verläßlich ist. Weil er “sein” Thema hat bzw. “seine” Themen. Weil er, und sei er tausendmal – so wie ich – Universalist in ausreichendem Umfang Material zu “seinem” bearbeiteten Spektrum vorhält.

Nicht nur ab und an das eine Superbild und ansonsten “Schweigen im Walde” …

Ich habe “meine” Regionen. Und in der Region auch “meine” Abnehmer. Ich mache Bayern (und natürlich die Südwestpfalz). Und deswegen sind auch die Medien in Bayern zu einem großen Teil die Verwender meiner Fotos. So, wie es das folgende Belegexemplar zeigt.

Und ich arbeite mit meinen Bayernbildern auch gezielt für die lokale Presse in Nürnberg. Denn auch in den hiesigen Blättern gibt es natürlich eine Rubrik “Die Region und Bayern”. Aber ich arbeite für die lokale Presse auch mit meinen überregionalen Themen (“Aus aller Welt” ). Hier gilt dann: “Think global, act local!”. Die Belege aus der Nürnberger Presse im folgenden Tableau zeigen diese beiden Richtungen. Mein Standbein Natur kommt auch hier, wie man so schön sagt, “voll zum Tragen”. Auch, weil ich – denn ich bin nicht nur Fotograf – auch fundierte Hintergrund-Informationen und Features liefere. Eingebettet in die IPTC-Caption meiner Bilder. Denn das, wenn auch von vielen Fotografen ungeliebt, ist ein weiterer Hauptaspekt der professionellen Arbeit: sein Material passend, punktgenau, informativ und unterhaltsam zu beschriften und zu verschlagworten. So wie ich auch früher auf die Rückseite meiner Prints nicht nur meinen Copyright-Stempel draufgeknallt habe, sondern auch ein Etikett mit umfassendem Text. That’s it!

Publikationsbeispiele aus der lokalen Presse

Und so muß ich sagen und so fasse ich es zusammen:

Es ist für uns Profis ärgerlich, hochgradig ärgerlich, daß der Markt mit billigstem Amateurmaterial geradezu überschwemmt wird. Es ist umso ärgerlicher, daß auch Professionals ihre Bilder bei Microstock anbieten. Aber das wird nicht das Ende des qualifizierten Bildjournalisten sein. Denn sein Kriterium ist und bleibt die Qualität. Nicht die der Megapixelhype. Sondern die der eigenen und unverwechselbaren Bildsprache. Die Fähigkeit, sich in jedes nur erdenkliche Thema dieser Welt hineinzuarbeiten und selbst unter widrigsten Konditionen bestes Bildmaterial zu produzieren. Es ist eine Selbstverständlichkeit, daß wir uns als Profis dazu auch professionellen Equipments bedienen und als Profis uns auch in jede neue Technik in schnellster Zeit hineinarbeiten. Und wir nutzen professionelle Vertriebsplattformen, über die unser Material eine Höchstzahl potentieller Verwender erreicht.

Und “bestes Bildmaterial”, im journalistischen Sinne, das sind eben nicht die “geleckten” und mit Photoshop “gepushten” Bilder. Das ist Authentizität. Das Echte. Das Wahre. Das wahre Leben halt. Die Menschen in ihrer Umwelt. Ihre Ängste, Sorgen, Nöte. Aber auch ihre Freuden. Der ganz normale Alltag eben.

Und wir sind originell, wir entdecken und recherchieren Themen. Als gute Journalisten. Wir beleuchten sie, im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes. Wir bieten Aspekte, wir liefern Information und Unterhaltung. Wir denken wie eine Redaktion. Und wir denken genau so, wie “unsere” Redaktion denkt. Deswegen sind wir Profis.

Und das ist genau das, was Microstocker und Hobbyknipser nie abliefern werden!

Weil ihnen die einfachsten Basics abgehen. Weil dieses Heer von Nicht-Professionellen zum großen Teil schon allein nicht weiß, was IPTC ist. Die zwar mit ihren 10- und noch mehr Megapixeln prahlen, aber dpi und lpi nicht auseinanderhalten können. Die nicht wissen mit welchem Linienraster eine Zeitungsmaschine druckt oder was die technischen Anforderungen im Zeitschriften- oder Buchdruck sind.

Und wie wichtig gerade eine professionelle Verschlagwortung ist, das mag meine folgende Veröffentlichung in der SUPERillu beweisen.

Ein Foto, das nur im Ausschnitt verwendet wurde, aber zielgenau (und “live”) den redaktionellen Beitrag illustriert. Und in dem Zusammenhang auch gleich noch mal der Seitenhieb auf die Megapixel: das Bild entstand mit der Nikon Coolpix P5000, die ich immer und jederzeit in der Tasche habe und mit der eine Vielzahl meiner redaktionellen Fotos entstehen. “En passant”, im Vorübergehen. Denn wenn wir Pflanzen für den Garten einkaufen, dann bieten sich dabei zwar viele szenische Motive, aber ich verspüre nicht die Gelüste, meine Nikon D2H dazu mitzunehmen.

Die Beispiele der unprofessionellen Nicht-Kompetenz erschöpfen sich nicht in der IPTC-Beschriftung. Sie ließen sich beliebig fortsetzen. Dazu muß man nur mal in die einschlägigen Blogs und Foren schauen. Und: Nimmt man mal daran teil, erst mal wirklich ganz sachlich und auch mit Ratscglägen, dann dauert es nicht allzu lange, bis irgendwo sich ein Wüterich erhebt und einen, meist natürlich anonym, in geradezu unflätiger Weise attackiert. Weil das, was man sagt, einfach nicht in sein Denkmuster paßt, in seine Weltanschauung, die gegen alles ist, was über einer bestimmten Altersklasse liegt, gegen jegliche Form von Kritik. Gegen einen anderen Weg. Resistent auch gegen Ratschläge, eben halt beratungsresistent.

Wir Professionellen werden durchaus zu kämpfen haben, weil das Billigmaterial durchaus auch in der traditionellen Presse seinen Einzug gefunden hat. Und wir deshalb bereits von einigen unserer klassischen Abnehmer aus “marktwirtschaftlichen” Gründen zum Teil erbärmliche Konditionen angeboten kriegen. Wir werden mit unseren Abnehmern zusammen um den Bestand des Print-Marktes kämpfen müssen. Keine Frage. Wir werden uns auch auf neue Medien einlassen müssen. Auch keine Frage.

Aber wir werden ncht untergehen.

The exact reasons are unclear as to why Takahiro Miyashita decided to close the doors of one of Japan’s most innovative and intriguing fashion brands earlier this year, the official statement read, ‘When you’re finished changing, you’re finished’, indicating a design led decision, few however would dispute that number (n)ine was more likely choked by the acrid cloud that has engulfed the retail sector of late.  In fact, it’s a surprise how few closures have been caused by this beast,  I worry that the full repercussions have yet to be been fully realised. The financial meltdown will have been particularly hard on the small high-end labels – those without the backing and financial support of huge conglomerates with their lucrative high street connections or rich client bases. Perhaps it was n(n)’s odd retail choices (their flagship Tokyo location was notoriously out-of-the-way), or maybe it was their increasingly niche and stylised collections. Either way Number (n)ine’s quirky runway shows will certainly be missed and the closure of the brand is undoubtedly a blow to Men’s fashion. What will Miyashita do next? We’ll have to wait and see, but with number (n)ine’s prestigious track record, I am certain he won’t spend too long out in the cold.

I grasped my final chance to buy a pair of n(n)’s excellent basic slim jean’s from a store the other day. I love the unique details on these with the darts on the thighs and behind the knees. This fall 09 collection ‘A Closed Feeling’ is your last chance, take it, from this point on we’re left with the joyless task of scouring yahoo.jp.

Siemens (2008) offered a description of several roles that educators should facilitate in integrating new technologies and concepts into learning processes as part of a larger instructional method. The most compelling to this candidate was the descriptor of an “Educator as Network Administrator”. This concept offered by Clarence Fisher (n.d) centered on the correlation between concept and context. The idea was that over time the student will develop these “connections” based on use and functionality.

The educator would present the students with an object (data set, technique, or tool) and then aid the student in cataloging, evaluating, and determining its overall use; the same way a network administrator would use configure routers, switches, hubs and servers. Eventually as time passes the educator will expose the student to the deeper functions every object and how they all fit together in an amalgamated function.

Although the concept of the educator as a network administrator has great merit a more appropriate metaphor is required in the digital paradigm that we live in today. The metaphor that I speak of is “Educator as part of a Neural Network” or Instructive Neural Networking (INN).

According to Yu (2002) neural networks or NN normally refers to a network or circuit of real neurons connected by an auxiliary or central nervous system to perform a particular function (biological). The current definition of an artificial neural network or ANN refers to networks composed of artificial neurons or nodes that act like neural nodes (Yu, 2002).

The use-cases in how this would this apply to teaching process or learning paradigms is in several instances. In neural networks distance is an issue due to the time needed for messages, and functions to travel from the brain, down the spinal cord and finally to a specific part of the body. The human brain has millions of neurons to compensate for this and most neurons have the same function and composition in biological systems, in artificial systems that is not the case. The same can be said for student who learns at a slower pace or has different contextual understanding of data sets, functions and their purposes. So in the practice of neural networking an optimal solution is to place the slower performing students closer to the instructor, thereby increasing their chances for success and as the move will not have any lasting effect on the higher performing students (Monterola, Roxas, & Carreon-Monterola, 2009).

Another option is in the different leaning paradigms to classroom teaching. The science of neural networking demonstrates three different paradigms that correlate to learning processes that are abstract. They are; supervised learning, unsupervised learning and reinforcement learning (Monterola, Roxas, & Carreon-Monterola, 2009). In supervised learning the students are given a data set that is in pairs and are then instructed to find the function that closely matches the pairs. This is basically an inference problem (called classification) where the relationship between both the data and the function is investigated to find a result.  This type of learning has applications in teaching with active learning or when the student chooses  the examples that make the most since to them and as they investigate further the educator must offer guidance as to the proper designation and purpose behind the example (Yu, 2002). The key point is that the educator has to also serve as the filter as well because even though the number of examples that the student needs to obtain a full understanding may be smaller, there exists the possibility that wrong example may have been selected, where the educator must make corrections.

Unsupervised learning is where the students’ once again are given some data set but this time the function and the results are included and the instruction is to then to find the purpose and the context that it correlates to. For artificial intelligence purposes this is used for estimation, modeling, and clustering, but for teaching purposes clustering seems most appropriate to focus on where clustering applies to the classification based on logical hierarchy. This type of learning paradigm has application uses in science, mathematics, history, political science and various others in where the smallest object of the data, function, or system fits into the larger paradigm as a whole (Yu, 2002).

Lastly, there is reinforcement learning where no data is given to the student, but rather the student performs a series of exercises where data is collected based on their observation and responses to the exercises. Gaming is widely used in this type of learning where the student’s responses to the object tasks allow for learning the concepts of basic strategy and decision making. The educator’s purpose main role in this instance is to change the heuristics governing the exercises or games (Yu, 2002). With gaming, the circumstances change automatically or by command but the time to apply the proper exercise still will need a human governor to manage this process, after all it should be a real NN governing an ANN or an INN (a poor attempt at humor, I know).

In closing, the paradigms of learning are changing and we need to change with them for effectiveness and the overall competitive future of American students. Neural networking concentrates on taking an impractical science to produce a practical result. I do believe that in changing the way we work and function, changing the way we learn and associate context should change as well.

Medienstadt Nürnberg?

Üblicherweise denkt man da an Hamburg oder an München,auch an Berlin, Düsseldorf oder Essen …

Stimmt schon, auch Nürnerg ist eine Medienstadt. Immerhin ist hier die Redaktion des KICKER, Deutschlands größtes Sportmagazin. Es gibt die Nürnberger Redaktion der BILD, der ABENDZEITUNG und auch Büros von dpa und AP. Und die beiden großen regionalen Tageszeitungen, die Nürnberger Nachrichten (NN) und die Nürnberger Zeitung (NZ).

Viele Redaktionen finden sich – und darüber bin ich als Journalist froh – in meiner unmittelbaren Nachbarschaft. Wolfgang Uhrig, der ehemalige Chefredakteur des Kicker, hatte seine Nürnberger Wohnung gar hier bei uns im Haus, auf der Etage unter uns. Das war gut für private als auch für geschäftliche Kontakte.

Auch wenn mein Büro grundsätzlich überregional arbeitet, so beliefere ich doch auch die Nürnberger Redaktionen mit Material, etwa mit Bilderdiensten über den Mecom-Bildkanal. Nachstehend Beispiele, die in der Nürnberger Presse verwendet wurden.

Denn die aktuellen oder semi-aktuellen Symbolbilder des alltäglichen Lebens benötigt jede Redaktion. Und wenn dann sogar noch ein lokaler Bezug besteht (weil das Bild etwa in Nürnberg entstanden ist) – umso besser …
