Hello Peopleeee… I know my blogging is lagging behind usual schedule and I apologize but Niecey has been very busy these last couple of days… On Friday as you may be aware from previous blog post I Supported Mobo award-winning Nneka ot Liverpool show on her UK tour.

Now when I heard her album I thought yeahh shes a breath of fresh air I like this woman. Well on Friday just before the Gig I got to interview her for Mesh Magazine and I have to say speaking to her and listening to what she had to say was an experience in its self. When she spoke she made you feel every word and when she smiled the whole room lit up. She has a beautiful soul with no airs or graces she is who she is, a very honest woman and yet is still very tactile.

Shes Fantstic… She Also revealed who she will be touring with in 2010 and I have to say… Legends… I want to go and see that show! She also spoke about her Influences and how she feels about the western world growing up In Africa! stay tuned for the video of the Interview which i will post on Tuesday !

If You Don’t Have Her Album ‘No Longer at Ease’ Then hit the stores and go buy it, such a classic!!!

Tonight I have has a show in Printworks, Manchester which was fun apart from the fact that it was freezing and I was on an outdoor stage outside a pub where im pretty sure Man U where playing on the bigscreen :S but oh well I love a challenge. I then came back to Liverpool to have an interview on the upfront show With Mandy… Fun Times

Now I am home an bout to hit the sack for a well deserved day off tomorrow

… NO GYM…

So…. I had heard of Nneka and I was a fan of her tune Heartbeat and that she had won a Mobo but thats all i knew of her… since finding out i was going to be supporting her on the 27th November (tomorrow) I got a hold of her debut Album ‘No Longer at Ease’ and had a listen to it.

Her music is such a breath of fresh air. You can clearly feel all of her different influences. There is the heavy African Influence, and a stong sense of a connection to African culture and yet the music is still very British and Gritty with a Sca sounding edge.

When I first put it on it was about 11 at night and i thought i shall listen to it in the bath .I had the volume on just high enough so I could hear it from the next room. The 85 year old partially deaf man next door Donny, Knocked in his slippers and asked us to turn down the music for the simple fact that the bass is so thick that it must have been booming in his bedroom poor guy.

In her Lyrics she talks about her reality’s that she has faced and the struggle and the aparthide in West Africa. There is a song on the album (Track Called ‘Halfcast’ were she talks about what it is like to not be accepted by your own people. Her music is reflective of a time and yet has timeless revolutionary aspect that if it wasnt for its modern instrumental you wouldn’t be surprised if it was created in the 1960’s, It is defiantly a classic Album and one that will never go out of fashion.

I would advise strongly that you pop out to HMV and grab a copy of ‘No Longer At Ease’. I Am looking forward to meeting and supporting Nneka tomorrow for the fact that shes a truly great artist and i have so much respect for her music!

My homie, Marvin, sent me this new artist who just signed to Epic Records. Nneka is a Nigerian-German hip hop/soul singer and songwriter. She sings in English and her traditional language of Igbo. As a young singer she first gained public attention in 2004 while performing as an opening act for dancehall reggae star Sean Paul at Hamburg Stadtpark. She has already release two albums overseas, Victim of Truth (2005) and No Longer at Ease (2008), but her first US release Concrete Jungle is set for February 2, 2010 (via Wiki). I think she’s pretty talented, so check her out.

Nov 11th was a day I discovered Nneka and Ed Rush & Optical.

When I was growing up, I had a hard time finding female vocals I liked. Most of the female vocals in my days were the same old same old. They wore dresses and made themselves clear that they were female musicians, not musicians.

However, Nneka is not like that. Shes this bold, strong, talented, and smart lady from Nigeria and Germany. Her music is filled with soul and influenced by so many style of music. If you check out her myspace page, http://www.myspace.com/nnekaworld, “Suffri (Band Version)” is a mix of soul and Caribbean music. “Heartbeat” grabbed my head and made it bounce for the entire song. How do you sing like that? Eh Eh Eh Eh Eh Eh Eh Eh Eh I would of been annoyed by this type of chorus, but it works! Her next show in NY is Nov 17th at Highline ballroom. http://worldmusic.nationalgeographic.com/view/page.basic/article/content.article/nneka_us_tour/en_US

Oh!
What do you get when you cross Lauryn Hill & Majek Fashek, and sprinkle a little Fela Anikulapo

What do you get when you cross Lauryn Hill & Majek Fashek, and sprinkle a little Fela Anikulapo Kuti? Big shoes.

And Nneka Egbuna might be on her way to filling them. You’ve probably heard the cliche before, but trust me when I say she’s a breath of fresh air. In an era where her Nigerian contemporaries are exhibiting western influences at home, she’s “sticking it to the script” and drawing on her heritage richly. Yes, you may note the baselines of hip-hop, reggae or soul rhythms in her music but they are visually and audibly streams leading to an ocean. Nneka’s singing accent is raw and uncut, even the music video’s have no make-up. Nneka’s latest album “No Longer At Ease”, based on the Chinua Achebe book of the same name is in my opinion even better than her debut “Victim of Truth” which has been compared to Lauryn Hill’s “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” : – ). That may seem like a massive leap but the UK’s Sunday Times doesn’t seem to think so.

The year’s most criminally overlooked album must be Victim of Truth (Four), by Nneka. On the basis of this stunning mix of soul, reggae and hip-hop, the 25-year-old should be topping the charts, guesting with Massive Attack, hanging with Jay-Z and working with Danger Mouse. Oddly, none of this seems to have happened. Victim of Truth is as good as The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. If you liked that, buy this.

Nneka’s voice strikes an eerie balance between rage and pain which mirror’s the abrasion of two continents, Europe and Africa, within Nneka’s life so far. Nneka reiterates her humility in the face of her musical talents.

“I do not see myself as a performer but as somebody who shares her heartfelt feelings with others. I have fortunately, by the grace of God, the opportunity to sing my message to you on stage.”

Striking as Nneka’s voice may be, her lyrics match up nicely. Especially for someone so young (27), they have depth, are catchy and span a range of topics including politics, love, spirituality and have a very Nigerian context but involve universal truths. The single “Kangpe” was featured in the EA sports game franchise FIFA 10 even with its gritty lyrics, “notice me or I quench/ look at me how I bounce/ but na you be the crook/…/but you know how e be/when wind blow, fowl yansh go open very very well oh/…”.

Nneka is off the Richter. Go figure.

Heartbeat

Nneka (Chase & Status)

You said you’d be there for me
In times of trouble when I need you and I’m down
And likewise you need friendship
It’s from my side pure love but I see lately things have been changing
You have goals to achieve
But the roads you take abroad are heartless
That wants you make another way
You throw stones
Can you see that I am human I am breathing
But you don’t give a damn

Chorus:
Can you feel my heart is beating
Can you see the pain you’re causing
Can you feel my heart is beating
Can you see the pain you’re causing

Blood blood blood…. blood is rushing

And now the world is asleep
How will you ever wake her up when she is deep in her dreams, wishing
And yet so many die
And still we think that it is all about us
It’s all about you
You sold your soul to the evil and the lust
and the passion and the money and you
See innocent ones die, people hunger for decades
suffer under civilized armedrobbers, modern slaveholders

Chorus
Can you feel my heart is beating
Can you see the pain you’re causing
Can you feel my heart is beating
Can you see the pain you’re causing

Blood blood blood…. keeps rushing

Evaded, eliminated, erased, interrogated
Our tradition, our love for our fellow countrymen,
our property, our resources – our pride

Can you feel my heart beating
no no no….you don’t

Chorus:
Can you feel my heart is beating
Can you feel the pain you’re causing
Can you feel my heart is beating
Can you feel the pain you’re causing

NNEKA MAKES HER US DEBUT WITH CONCRETE JUNGLE – SET FOR FEBRUARY 2010 RELEASE!

Nneka has gained a large following in Europe and her native Nigeria over the past few years but has set her sights on the US. Concrete Jungle, set for release in February 2010, is her third album but is the first to be released in the US. She draws upon both her African roots as well as her formal training in Germany to produce a unique, soulful sound. Nneka will tour for the first time in the US this November to promote Concrete Jungle.

Really? was the question that the curious reader asked. That’s much nicer than what I was thinking. WTC? I mean did the reviewer that compared Nneka the Nigerian, German based artist to Nina Simone ever listen to Nina Simone. I doubt it very seriously. She doesn’t sound anywhere near Lauren Hill either. They should take away his review pen, beat him over the head with it, and finally snap it in half. Maybe this drastic gesture would serve to improve his hearing. Check out Nneka for yourself and form your own opinions:

Nneka ‘The Uncomfortable Truth’ This Nigerian-raised, Hamburg-based artist has been steadily gaining

Nneka
‘The Uncomfortable Truth’

This Nigerian-raised, Hamburg-based artist has been steadily gaining momentum over the last four years, culminating in her recent MOBO Award for Best African Act. Her style is a well-blended mix of “hot loops, black consciousness and 21st century soul music”, recalling such high-calibre acts as Lauryn Hill, Nina Simone and Bob Marley. But Nneka is not just a singer – she also gets to put letters at the end of her name after earning a first-class degree from a top continental university. Her 2007 debut Victim Of Truth and last year’s No Longer At Ease have earned her a strong Eurocentric following, predominantly in Germany and France, but it’s her upcoming third album Concrete Jungle, out February 2010, which looks set to substantiate her rising success as a new-school artist on the global stage, and will be her first US release.

‘The Uncomfortable Truth’ is not a new song – it was originally released as Nneka’s debut single in 2006 – but its relevance has not diminished. It is lyrically indicative of the material to be found on Concrete Jungle, an album intended as an optimistic message of hope to the Warri state of the Niger Delta in Nigeria, a state beset with civil strife and governmental politics, heavily influenced by the effects of colonisation in previous times and ownership of the land’s rich natural oil reserves. This is an emotive, heartfelt song, with Nneka’s rich R&B vocals strung against a simple, soulful arrangement kept beating with regular strains of saxophone. MP3 after the jump.
