No Mas Presents: Dock Ellis & the LSD No-No by James Blagden

In celebration of the greatest athletic achievement by a man on a psychedelic journey, No Mas and artist James Blagden proudly present the animated tale of Dock Ellis’ legendary LSD no-hitter. In the past few years weve heard all too much about performance enhancing drugs from greenies to tetrahydrogestrinone, and not enough about performance inhibiting drugs. If our evaluation of the records of athletes like Mark McGwire, Roger Clemens, Marion Jones, and Barry Bonds needs to be revised downwards with an asterisk, we submit that that Dock Ellis record deserves a giant exclamation point. Of the 263 no-hitters ever thrown in the Big Leagues, we can only guess how many were aided by steroids, but we can say without question that only one was ever thrown on acid.

Sadly, the great Dock Ellis died last December at 63. A year before, radio producers Donnell Alexander and Neille Ilel, had recorded an interview with Ellis in which the former Pirate right hander gave a moment by moment account of June 12, 1970, the day he no-hit the San Diego Padres. Alexander and Ilels original four minute piece appeared March 29, 2008 on NPRs Weekend America. When we stumbled across that piece this past June, Blagden and Isenberg were inspired to create a short animated film around the original audio.

Dock Ellis and the LSD No No?
The story is now legendary, back in the seventies Dock Ellis pitched a no hitter while under the influence of LSD.
Nobody can tell the story like him, and the awesome soundtrack and animation doesn’t hurt either.

Hey, remember Doc Ellis? Of course you don’t, he wasn’t a particularly memorable pitcher although he does have a place in baseball history. Ellis pitched a no hitter for the Pirates on a day he didn’t even think he was supposed to play. Why? Because he took some LSD.

Ellis died last December at the age of 63 and gave a great account of the events leading up to the game. Well done video and absolutely hilarious.

Luckily, he didn’t end up in an RV bathroom for three days. (Anybody?)

The first track of this particularly unknown group is No No. Not only was I impressed by each of the girls stronger than normal vocals, but by how great of a pop song it is. It has instruments like piano and strings at moments but it’s the rushing synth in the chorus that really makes the song. It’s catchy as heck too. I would have loved to see this group perform this song live as it sounds like something that could have a really fun step.

Going in a  totally different directions is the soothing, laid-back Fool which focuses on its wide array of acoustic guitars and emotional vocals. The verses are really relaxed, yet keep you entertained while the chorus shows off how powerful the groups vocals can get. I thought the vocals were well manipulated to match the music while not overshadowing it. Another good track.

Closing off the single is Fireworks which is totally different form the last two tracks. I would describe it as a song with a euro-pop sound but with a typical K-Pop arrangement. The song starts off with a bang of techno beats and synth, calms down in the verses and then rises again once the chorus arrives. This style for the girls is really quite unique as one doesn’t hear this genre of music much with such great vocals. Maybe this song might overwhelm listeners the first few times(which is what happened to me) but once given a chance, the songs greatness really begins to shine.

The overall package of this non mainstream group is something I don’t see a lot with the more popular groups these days who only focus on the title track instead of the individual songs. The single had a nice arrangement of music, great vocals and interesting instrumentals so I definitely recommend it to any fan of K-Pop with strong vocals(that don’t necessarily have to be made for ballads).

Another No-No (to trash) post!

I took this picture while I was leaving work and heading to my car! Its very disappointing

To this kind of art and use of bad language in public!!

I generally do not like breakfast buffets… or buffets in general! I would rather order from a menu! But I have a confession to make! I do like Sultan Center breakfast buffet! Dont ask me why, but there is something about that place that makes me go back every now and then…

So, my sisters and I went out for breakfast at Sultan Center – Sharg yesterday! The place was almost full, but we managed to get a table. I must say the food quality is not all that! It used to be better for some reason…

So where is the No-No in this post?

Well…. as I was waiting in line for some hotdogs, a young girl in front of me FILLED her plate with most of what was left of the hotdogs! I was thinking is that all she wanted to eat! She looked thin!! She came back and filled another plate with some potatoes… and back again with another kid filling another plate of another something… this was going on for quite some time, they kept going at it! It was really hard to ignore!!

As I walked back to our table, I checked their table out! Apparently they do not understand the concept of a buffet! They are setting their table with all kinds of food… FULL FULL plates of almost everything available in the buffet!!

I mean I know it all you can eat from the buffet for a fixed price, but that was NOT right! Thats buffet abuse! Thats just insane!! Thats a No-No!

No-No to cars taking it personal on the road and blocking the way! It’s SELFISH!

The two cars turning “supposedly” decided to stop and fight in the middle of the road, blocking the way! Cars behind them were honking like crazy! What do they think they own the road or something!?

To littering the movie theater like that just because you know someone else will clean up after you!

I saw this offender at the Fox theatre  in Oakland the night I went to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs concert on September 9th. I have no problem with afros, or mohawks, but you need to pick one! I mean, is it an afro? More like a afrno! Is it a mohawk? More like a nohawk! You get what I’m saying. That beast needs some taming! And by taming I mean a brush, a comb, or scissors! It’s just all sorts of wrong……

Ooooo nooooo!!!!

But other than that the show was just fantastic!

Tossing cigarette butts like that on the floor is considered littering! At least in my, and FAH’s, dictionary! No?
