Pada hari Sabtu (17 /10 / 09), beberapa jam sebelum naik pentas di hall kompleks Hotel Bumi Wiyata, Depok, No Use For A Name berhasil di-interview oleh Wasted Rockers.

Kita ngobrol ngalor-ngidul seputar rekaman album terakhir mereka The Feel Good Record of the Year (2008), album NUFAN favorit kami: More Betterness (1999), mengenai pop-punk scene, emo, & (late) Green Day!…

So, enjoy it!…

Hey guys! As promised, here are some great Halloween tracks to get you excited for Trick-or-Treating! WordPress won’t allow me to embed the media player in this post (so that it shows up like the original playlist in the menu at the bottom of the page), but if you click on the link below, you will be able to listen/download the songs from Box.net. When I get some more time a little later, I’ll post the lyrics and potentially add some more songs. Enjoy!

Oooh this is a hot one! First up in this weeks auditory mind assault is a full album download of down and dirty, psytrance from Xamanist…

Xamanist is 31 year old Sérgio Ribeiro from Portugal and he’s been messin’ about on guitar and bass and tweakin’ synths since diaper days. Then came what the man himself describes as a “life changing moment” - Boom Festival 2000 – and the next thing ya’ know Sergio is creating his own psytrance compositions. Together with Syul, the twosome formed Swan X-1, who performed live across Portugal until disbanding in 2007. Sérgio wasn’t quite done yet though, and hence, his solo project, Xamanist, was born. But, and I love this part, Xamanist still performs live on guitar and synths, at every show. This is not your average bot-a-track electronica. Rather, Xamanist is like all good scotch, wine, coffee and smoothies an exercise in the perfection of the blend. Xaminist is old and new, darkness and light, melody and rhythm. This fusion philosophy is breathtakingly executed on Sérgio’s debut album, Initiation, mastered by Akhentek @ Ilum Studios. Sure, it’s laced with that good ‘ol Goa, but its also an amalgamation forged in the fires of a full-on, progressive style that provides an epic backdrop for creative storytelling. Personal favorite has gotta be the banging “White Magick”, but hey, I loved this whole album and it gets better with every listen. Oh and I almost forgot yo, that psychedelic cover art is from the delightfully curious mind of Adam Scott Miller – another interesting cat to say the least.

Download and enjoy all 9 tracks from Initiation by Xamanist here. FREE!

And now, in the immortal words of Monty Python, for something completely different.

Splendid! But yeah did ya know you can download a whole pile of tracks from all those acts for FREE right now? No you didn’t. HA! Now, now.. Hush. Its o.k. Thats why I’m here.

Doch was erwartete die Besucher wirklich?

Einfach für jeden was dabei

Go me!

Såg No Use For A Name som var först ut, riktigt bra! Queen of the Underground var riktigt najs! The Living End, alltså. Not my cup of tea.

Je me suis procuré le dernier album de No Use For a Name (groupe punk rock américain) celui-ci intitulé The Feel Good Record Of The Year.

I dedicate the following song to irony:

For the hearing impaired, here are the lyrics:

“I wake up every evening, with a big smile on my face
And it never feels out of place
And your still probably working at a 9 to 5 pace
I wonder how bad that tastes”

“When you see my face
Hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell
When you walk my way
Hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell”

Now wheres you picket fence love
And wheres that shiny car,
And did it ever get you far
You’ve never seem so tense love
I’ve never seen you fall so hard,
Do you know where you are”

“And truth be told I miss you
And truth be told I’m lying”

“When you see my face
Hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell
When you walk my way
Hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell
If you find a man that’s worth a damn and treats you well
Then he’s a fool, your just as well, hope it gives you hell”

“Tomorrow you’ll be thinking to yourself
Where’d it all go wrong, the list goes on and on”

“And truth be told I miss you
And truth be told I’m lying”

“Now you’ll never see, what you’ve done to me
You can take back your memories they’re no good to me
And here’s all your lies,
You can look me in my eyes
With that sad sad look that you wear so well”

“When you see my face
Hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell
When you walk my way
Hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell
When you hear this song and sing along oh you’ll never tell
Then you’re the fool, I’m just as well
Hope it gives you hell
When you hear this song I hope that it will give you hell
You can sing along I hope that it will treat you well”

Now, I can finally smile. Thanks All-American Rejects for a great song.

Speaking of emo I recently exchanged messages with JT Woodruff, lead singer of Hawthorne Heights. He finally got hip and set up a Facebook. That’s right, the “Ohio Is for Lovers” rocker was originally just a guy from my hometown of St. Marys, W.Va. We used to run in the same circles and I once sold his band a sound mixing board.

Those were some good days. That’s when we’d listen to No Use for a Name (NUFAN), NOFX, MXPX, Goldfinger, Blink 182, 311, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, etc. Matt Powell and JT once wrote a song called “West Virginia Bass Festival,” a tribute to the annual St. Marys bass tournament, which runs this year from June 11-14.

Once we put together a punk show at the Pleasants County Park called the Punk ‘n’ Funk Festival. I remember designing the flyers for the show on my old Packard Bell computer. It was a small crowd, but we had plenty of Surge soda to go around.

I miss those days, but I miss Surge more.

Either way, it’s nice to see JT taking his roots and turning them into great songs.

So back to music. But rather than talk about why good music is good, I thought I’d have a crac

So back to music. But rather than talk about why good music is good, I thought I’d have a crack at talking about why bad music is bad. The genre that immediately sprung to mind was punk rock.

Needless to say, I’m not a fan. I quite like some pop punk, like blink 182 and early sum41, a bit of Greenday, Jimmy eat world etc. basically the really commercial, well known stuff. But I think these bands are well known for a reason, because they’re the best in their genre, and even they aren’t anything spectacular.

But moving on from pop punk, to real punk rock. Basically, the old school bands like the sex pistols, and the newer bands, NOFX, No Use for a Name (worst band name ever by the way) etc. seem to have basically the same song writing techniques. String together a generic four chord sequence, whack some distortion on it, play really fast, and sing over it (more often than not out of tune) about how much the government sucks and the big bad corporations are taking over the world.

I just can’t help but think, jesus christ this music has been inflicted upon society for what, 30 years? Have they not run out of crap to moan about yet? And if they must voice their irrelevant opinions on current affairs through the medium of music, AT LEAST MAKE THE MUSIC GOOD! I mean really, I’m sure around 75% of punk rock songs are based around four chords, not necessarily the same chords, but all similar progressions, and have the same generic fast punk drum beat, with some pissed off, tone deaf idiot shouting/singing (I use the term singing very loosely) about how the world should change to how he wants it to be.

I mean, I get that this music is all about the attitude and the arrogance. I get that. But what i don’t understand is why anyone would want to go and see three/four/five musical simpletons slop their way through a set which requires the technical ability of a five year old and a couple of weeks of guitar lessons to play, essentially, up on their soapbox telling people how things should be.

AND, if they actually have a message worth hearing, a genuine political statement, then why put it across in such a way that will just make people switch off to it and say “what the hell is this crap?”. What’s wrong with the way Bob Dylan did it? He was one of the biggest political voices in music in his day because people could listen to him. Or if they want it to be a bit more energetic than acoustic folk music, why not just take a bit more care over the songs, maybe give them a touch more of a melodic feel, take care over the notes that the vocalist hits and actually make them sound like something people will want to listen to. Because to me, it sounds like these bands just throw a song together in 5 minutes and then say “yeah that’ll do, let’s just release that”.

In conclusion, I think punk rock sucks balls. With exceptions of course, no generalisation comes without exceptions, for example, the singer from bad religion is pretty damn good, and there are a few cool guitary bits in some NOFX songs, but mainly, it’s just relentless crap that refuses to stop sharing it’s unwanted opinions.

Though having said all that, I have kind of just generalised the whole genre based on the bands I’ve heard. If anyone can recommend any really good punk rock bands who they think can sway my opinion, I would like to go and check them out.

All the best people x

That’s right, I recently had a live music review published on the LimeWire Music Blog. If you’re asking how that’s different than me posting a review on here, well, I don’t know how to answer that. But they are a business, they have a blog, and I wrote for it.

The band I reviewed, No Use For A Name, is the band that officially got me into punk music back in the early to mid ’90s. I even did a presentation in grade 7 music class on their song “Until It’s Gone.” And as is the case with most bands I’ve seen recently (or am still waiting to see), I’ve been waiting most of my life to see them. And thanks to my lovely girlfriend – who is also responsible for the amazing photos taken at the show – I finally got to see them last week.

To say the least, it was pretty rad.

Click here for the review. One person even commented on it!

No Use For A Name @ the Underground May 20/09. This show originally was to be held at the Warehouse but was moved to the Underground which is a club below the Warehouse. Pour Habit was an awsome opener. The guys are very energenic and put on an excellent show. I recommend getting to the show early to catch these guys. Only Crime were OK but I wasn’t really feeling them. Even the lead singer made a comment of having a bad day so I assume it was affecting their show. Neither opener had custom picks from what I saw.

NUFAN were great. The Underground is pretty small so this was an intemitt type show. The guys played about a 20 song set with 3 songs in their encore. I’m impressed with the sh*t they put up with. There was no barrier between the crowd and band so Tony’s mic stand kept getting not around. Their guitar tech had to hold the stand for the entire show. By the end they seemed to have enjoyed the crowd and made a comment that the show was really punk like (If you were there you would agree).

Custom Picks,

Pour Habit: none

Only Crime: None

NUFAN: Custom Ernie Ball

Note: The Tech is pretty friendly and will hand out a few picks at the end of the show.

Então a dúvida realmente ficou.

Tocaram a versão ska de Take On Me que o Reel Big Fish fez, bem tocadão.

Em The Answer Is Still No, por exemplo, após o clássico “What’s Your Name? ” e a resposta automática da platéia “Fuck You That’s My Name”, entra um dub/reggae muito aleatório. Pô, achei mto bacana. De restante das músicas, todos os hits e a incidental do Making Friends – aquela da gaitinha de fole - numa versão hardcore “Jane and Paul, I hate you most of all” e para nossa surpresa The Trooper do Iron Maiden, cara!

No Winamp – Rescue – Like Deja Vu, Like Deja Vu

Realease do show:

Abertura: Hardneja Sertacore + No News Found + End of Pipe
