Noah's Headdress for his pow-wow

In honor of Thanksgiving, Noah had a Pow-wow in school.  In the weeks leading up to the event, they learned about native americans and picked for themselves, native american names.  Of course Noah, being Noah chose this name for himself.  Yes, that does say, “Brave Mattress.”  We have no idea what it means, but he is very proud of it.

What I have learned today in Genesis that I thought was very interesting or that I didn’t know already!  The rainbow is Gods promise to all living creatures of every kind on the earth that God will never ever again destroy them with a flood Genesis 9:8-13.  Now when ever I see a rainbow it is like Gods signature in the sky!

Noah’s Ark Everything I need to know, I learned from Noah’s Ark .

ONE: Don’t miss the boat.
TWO: Remember that we are all in the same boat!
THREE: Plan ahead. It wasn’t raining when Noah built the Ark.
FOUR: Stay fit. When you’re 60 years old, someone may ask you to do something really big.
FIVE: Don’t listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done.

SEVEN: For safety’s sake, travel in pairs.

Sister girl I will tell you what men are doing, and suggest what nasty things you should do for your man, I’m going to share, how to keep your man tips ok? Now back to your feet. Sister girl your feet are crusty – - because you don’t take the time to wash your feet properly. COME ON NOW MAKE THE TIME. take time for yourself, stop rushing through your day, get up earlier if you have to or GO TO BED LATER. HERE IT IS! if you have a lot of crustiness under your feet, scrub them a few times,until you get them smooth as you possibly can and then no more scrubbing your feet, you have to give your feet personal attention each day, twice a day even, at least once a day OK? wash your feet let them soak at least 10 minutes, dry them use extra vit. E oil or vaseline and then lotion extra lotion, message you feet. wipe off excess lotion and oil or vaseline, do not wear open shoes such as sandals. please wear socks and closed shoe like a tennis shoe. when your feet are as smooth as you know they should be go ahead and wear sandles and show off that pretty polish. pretty feet and hands are sexy, sexy! then just wash you feet daily and continue to use vit. E and lotion. If my sister is in trouble she can always count on me! HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT HELLO FRIEND, WHEN IT COMES TO LOOSING WEIGHT, YOU CAN NOT GO ON A DIET JUST TO LOSE WEIGHT AND THEN START YOUR OLD EATTING HABITS. IF YOU DO YOU WILL GAIN ALL THE WEIGHT BACK THAT YOU LOST, AND THEN SOME. DIET, STOP, DIET AND YOUR WEIGHT WILL GO UP AND DOWN, ADDING WEIGHT OVER THE YEARS. WHAT YOU’RE GOING TO HAVE TO DO IS CHANGE THE WAY YOU EAT. AND YOU CAN NOT GO BACK TO YOUR OLD EATTING HABBITS, EVER, EVER, EVER AGAIN! YOU’VE GOT TO GET YOUR MIND SET ON LOOSING WEIGHT AND MAINTAINING A HEATHY WEIGHT. THE GOOD THING ABOUT LOOSING WEIGHT ON YOUR OWN, YOU DON’T NEED TO GO OUT AND BUY SPECIAL FOOD. ALL YOU NEEDE TO DO IS CUT BACK ON THE AMOUT OF FOOD YOU EAT. 1. START LEAVING FOOD – DON’T EAT EVERYTHING IN YOUR PLATE EVER! 2. START USING A SMALLER PLATE AND DO NOT PILE FOOD ON TOP OF FOOD. 3. Back in the 80’s Noah’s Ark was disovered (again) in the mountains of Ararat.  Not ON Mount Ararat.  It is my belief by all accounts of the facts provided through this video it was indeed found.  How long ago was it found?  How ’bout 1948!!!  And why this has been swept under the rug?  Hmmm…   Enjoy the video.  Its grainy and well… old technology, but still awesome once you accept the video for its age.

Just back from a 157min show which didn’t felt like 157mins! Not a very good show in my opinion but it is inspired from a very interesting “proposition”! The predictions by Mayans’ astronomy is that the universe will form a single line with the Sun which will result in the Earth’s core being heated up and allowing the tectonic plates to shift drastically causing dramatic changes in weather systems and North Pole becomes South Pole vice versa.

The Mayans are not the only ones who predicted this, a lot of other ‘Smart’ people also predicted the exact same thing within the more or less the same period.

The Dawn of the New Age is a nice name for it, a pessimistic version would be survival of the fittest (wealthiest) as the movie says.

The movie was engaging throughout but it was so damn cliche and predictable, even my GF could guess what was going to happen next (haha she would kill me if she sees this).

The visual effects was great though, the falling apart of the roads, famous landmarks and Tsunamis and all were so realistic and it really sets me thinking is that how Earth falling apart will really look like?

So the story begs the question, Are governments of all nations really rationing and selling seats to the Ark? What is going to happen to Singaporeans? Maybe this question could be addressed to the US President who is currently in Singapore at APEC? LOL…

This movie deserves a 3.5 popcorns from me but its a nice watch if you need to take a break from your all-consuming work.

PS: If i didn’t catch the name of one of the kid in the show wrong… He’s called Noah and the ships that were bringing them to a new world were refered to as Arks. Noah’s Ark? is there gonna be part 2? A story about this kid called Noah in this new world?

2012 is an action/disaster film which is based on the 2012 phenomenon. The film is directed by Roland Emmerich (10,000 BC, the day after tomorrow, the Patriot). The film has a cast which includes John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Danny Glover, Thandie Newton, Oliver Platt and Woody Harrelson.

John Cusack plays Jackson Curtis, a science fiction book writer who also works as a limousine driver. The film is very impressive in terms of its special effects- there are lots of long disaster scenes including meteors, tidal waves and earthquakes. The film has a very similar plot to that of the story of Noah’s Ark.

Although the film was visually brilliant it was slightly to long- around 2 and a half hours long. Some parts of the film felt very generic and predictable.Also at points the action becomes a bit ridiculous and becomes unbelievable.

Overall apart from being too long i did enjoy it and it’s definitely worth going to see if you like disaster films such as The Day After Tomorrow and the effects are visually amazing.

5 years ago, I walk into the field of architecture with my best skill of artist and my proud knowledge from Mahidol Wittayanusorn school of science. I did not expect anything from this field, but I thought that architecture should have been the easiest way to graduate. Not so long time ago, my meaning of “Architecture” was changed. I saw many under-constructional areas around my village. Those places had been farm before, but then, they were just the surface of concrete and concrete housing.

Thailand is considered as a perfect country which its land can grow almost kinds of agricultural plants, and has a vast area of forest. King Bhumibol Adulyadej has kept teaching people to head to develop agriculture instead of industrial. Thailand is already good at agriculture, but Thai people just need to make it better and greater. Only less number of capitalists can hear what the King says. They have changed green lands to be nongreen buildings to make a lot of money. My family has been one of foolish people who stepped into their traps. 1997, when I was 10 years old, my family moved to their housing, which built on top of a lotus farm. Many city people love to move out from the crowd areas into suburban housing. They escape from traffic-jam streets and high-pollution air. Most of them have to have their own cars to use in rush hour to go to work in the city. They waste the gas/benzine and also waste the material to make the cars.

The happy life with fresh air could not stay with the city people in suburban so long. When the capitalists invested in malls or supermarkets around those housings, the peaceful areas became the expanded city. The air and noise pollution came into the place. The time to move has come again then. The green areas have been destroyed very fast around many cities in Thailand, such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Songkla. Most capitalists do not do a green design, because they just want to pay less. They put a beautiful picture of house with a big grass field on the advertising board. We call those boards, “Air Junk”, because they hide all scenery and wind. People pay for those advertising housing projects before seeing the real houses. Most of real-estate projects in Thailand, people need to pay for every step to build a house, not pay for a finished house. The results that they get are small green areas, because most of green areas are cut to be the main circulation of the project, and that is made by concrete.

The expansion of the city may be a good economic sign in the business term or for the government, but in fact, it is a sign of disaster for environment and for an agriculture country as Thailand. The houses, buildings and factory keep releasing heat and toxic into the natural resources. They do not only hurt the nature by themselves, but they are also harmful for the agriculture areas around. Thai Government announced that rain of all province was not drinkable, because it contained very toxic substance. Although the toxic makers are in the city, the toxic can spread around many places, covering the tropical jungle area in Nakornsritummarach, the north east of Thailand.

Cathleen McGuigan wrote on NewWeek.com under a topic of “The Bad News About Green Architecture” about the unpleasantness in the design of green building. She described that the green buildings work so good by themselves, but people still have to drive to work. In my opinion, moral is more important than an object. One Bryant Park has a system of recapturing rainwater which is good, but many people who do not pay for the water bill will never think about saving the water. For example, many women always turn on the tap when they are doing their hair in public restrooms, and many men liked to do that when they are shaving. I have visited a company that my parent worked with, and I saw the janitor turn on all taps in the restroom at the same time to clean an individual sink. Moreover, he spilled some detergent on the restroom floor, and he used whole roll of paper towel to absorb it, then he threw that roll away. Paper is made by the trees. If only people waste and kind of material, that is the way they waste the energy, because all manufacture processes have to use the energy. This mean many people cannot change their attitude, if the results do not impact them directly. If we can change their habits, the world will be able to save the energy by this method more than the green design many times.

Not only the gray water system that One Bryant Park has, it also has air-condition ventilator on the floor. Most of buildings in the world have air-condition on the ceiling, which is far from human living space. What One Bryant Park does should be so good during the winter, because people love to feel hotter at their feet and feel colder at their heads.

Green design is enjoyable as people love to hang out in the park. People like the sun rather than a electric bulb. I always cheer the green design, but we have to accept that there is no building in the world can be 100% green. Although the big window can save the electricity used in bulb, the building also lose its heat in the winder through the window about 30 times bigger than the wall. If the office loves to use air-condition so much, the big window can also heat the interior up as the system of greenhouse effect. The better way to save the energy during the summer is using fans and open windows instead of air-condition, but it is still the problem for the offices in the high pollution areas.

One of the towers of K Bank (Kasikorn) in Thailand uses a special kind of glass for their facade. Its glass does not create greenhouse effect as other towers do. The color of its glasses seems white and can reflect the light very well. It is not dark color that will absorb the heat into the glass itself. Considering about the north pole, Greenland and the south pole, they are not only the cold place to keep the world cold, but they are also big white areas to reflect the heat out from the world. I tried to say that the colors of facade and rooftop are very important, too.

I went to Japan accidentally when the flight to USA was delayed. Narita Airport sent Thai people into its hotel for one night. It was winter at that time. We could not make a far trip, because we did not have Japanese visas. I walked to see its swimming pool. It was surprising me that it was covered by half-sphere glasses, and the water was one of the glass’ layers. The temperature was quite fine. The water can act better than the gas or air space actually. If you are a Bible reader and you can remember the Great Flood (Noah’s Ark), the water was from the sky and that means the planet earth had been surrounded by the water. The water can prevent many kinds of rays from the universe and the sun, and it acts very well in this Japanese swimming pool. The Bible also shows that after the Great Flood, humans’ ages were reduces from 800 to be less than 100 years old. Humans’ genes began to have mistake, because the water-atmosphere was destroyed. Brother and sister could not marry anymore after that time.

For the case of using gray water in flush toilets, I cannot say that the toxic rain may destroy the toilet, and the owners may need to pay more to repair whole things. I had talked with a ship owner when I went to at the south ocean of Thailand. I asked him for the reason that he still used tab water for flush toilets in the ship, because he could get salt water from the sea very easily. He told me that salt water had destroyed his flush toilets before. I cannot fully believe in his words, when I think about how much pH in human’s urine comparing with pH in salt water. The rainwater should not have less pH than human’s urine, too. That’s mean using gray water may be good enough to be considered as a part of green design.

The Gherkin Building in London should be praised, especially its system of natural air ventilation which is created by the tower’s aerodynamic form and ‘double skin’ facade (Hannah Bullock, http://www.forumforthefuture.org.uk, 2003). Moreover it support the biking people by its bicycle service.

For car industry, many new electricity cars were produced, because people believe that using the electric city is better for environment rather that using benzene. If they consider about electricity producing process, both types of cars are not much different. Most electricity is from coal factory outside the city. To use electricity cars is only move the pollution in the city to outside the city. All still heat up the world.

To get a clear energy may cost higher at the first installing, but it works very well in long term and it is also good to the world, too. The words that pop-up in your head should be solar, wind and water from dam. We can also think about other cheaper things to install, such as roof pond and water coil on the roof to make hot water for hot country.

Dams are something truly green, although they do not look green. A dam does not only produce a lot of electricity, but it can be the biggest green project in the world. Although the government have to destroy a lot of forest area to make a dam and the concrete surface can heat up the temperature around, the dam can keep the water to serve people all year long. When people have water to use, especially for agriculture, they will create the evergreen lands around the rivers, because the rivers have never dried. The places that had been desert during the summer time, the dams can make it to be evergreen territory for whole year. I visited many dams in Thailand during my vacations. The weather was quite hot, especially on the highest part of the dams. People cannot stand without umbrellas in the sunny day. I looked into the town side, and I was very impressed. All territory was green with banana and rice farms. That dam is, “Kun-Dan” Dam (เขื่อนขุนด่าน) in Nakorn Nayok.

I was in a seminar of Dr. Smith Dharmasaroja with other Silpakorn University professors and students in 2008. Dr. Smith explained about the disaster from the dam in the north part of the world. He said that that the current planet earth was just like a feeble spinning top with 23 degree leaning, and if people kept making dams above the equator, the earth would be end faster. Most of the lands on the earth are above the equator, so most of the dams will be above equator, too. This may be real, but I cannot fully believe it, because I cannot know if the south part of the world is exact the below part of the spinning top. The words, “North Pole” and “South Pole” are only what humans used to call for representation. (The first map was made by European, so they would love to show themselves on the North.) If we do not consider about what Dr. Smith said, the dam is still not so useful in many ways as I mentioned before.

I also have another reason to support that the south pole can be the top part of the world, if the world acts like a spinning top. Generally, we know that a biggest ozone hole is at the south pole, and the air of south pole is the lowest moisture air in the world (like the desert air). That mean the south pole does not have much of substance in atmosphere. If we notice the hurricane which acts in the same way, we will see the cloudless space at the eye of hurricane, which is the top part of it. That is the reason that I guess that the south pole is the real top side of the world. You can simply test this method at home. You just have a bowl of water with some sand or dust in it, and then you stir the water around; you will see the dust crowd at the bottom, and the water is hollow at the top when you are stirring.

NASA already found the water on the moon. It also loves to research the Mar. That means humans are looking for new places to live. Why don’t they want to make the world better rather than being hopeless to keep the world green. We cannot stop people who cut the trees down. We cannot stop people who burn the forest. We cannot stop people who keep punching the holes at the north pole for their ice testings (the ice melts faster if the bigger surface touch the water). We cannot stop people who consume everything wastefully. The results are bigger and stronger hurricanes and toxic. Finally, their acts just kill other innocent people who may have never hurt the world.

It’s been raining cats and dogs all week, which provides a rather apt lead-in to our alphabet wall lesson. Today, we’re going to be making b is for boat…and talking about the most famous big boat in the Bible!

You will need the following materials: Some artblock sheets, colour pencils, scissors, glue, marker.

1. In preparation, take one sheet of paper and fold it into a paper boat. Set aside.
2. Using a portrait orientation, draw waves. If your child can do this, hand them another colour pencil and get them to complete the waves in the picture.
3. Also ask your child to colour the boat which you folded beforehand.

4. When all the colouring is done, apply some glue on to the boat, and stick it on the water.
5. Draw a b on the side, and colour it in.
6. (This is an additional optional step.) I saved these fish from DS’s birthday party food labels. After we finished colouring, we pasted the fish on to the waves. DD had quite a laugh repeating the names of the fish after me as we stuck it on.

Ah, it was hilarious!  It’s still hilarious looking at the picture now with fish named “Prawn Fritters” and “Vegetarian Beehoon”!

7. Next comes the fun part. DD went and got some of her toy animals and attempted to load up the boat with them. I didn’t think of it at the time but given that we hadn’t yet mentioned anything about the ark at that point, it was interesting how DD made the connections naturally.

Well, obviously it wasn’t possible to accommodate the entire group, and I took the opportunity to talk about how God asked Noah to build a specially big boat, so that ALL the animals could fit in.

9. And here’s the Noah’s Ark I was referring to a couple of posts earlier!  (Sorry I don’t have the tutorial on how to make it…DH made this over the past couple of weeks when the kids and me had gone to bed and I don’t quite have the brain cells to try and deconstruct the steps at the moment).

Each of the animal pairs have a velcro piece on the back, and a corresponding sized velcro piece stuck on the ark.

DH had designed this to be a name and picture matching game so the name labels can be switched around so that each time the child doesn’t just memorise the placement but has to identify and match the name against the animal. It’s a work in progress as we are planning to get more animals into the ark.  

Altogether, I think we had a brilliant time on this alphabet lesson.

Enter Aardonyx celestae! A new dinosaur announced yesterday in South Africa is being hailed as a missing link in the sauropod chain of development, much to the chagrin of Creationists. I have to admit that I never outgrew my childhood fascination with dinosaurs, and when we purchased the life-like models for my daughter as she was growing up I secretly coveted them for myself. The rate of discovery among new genera of dinosaurs is between 10 and 20 per year, meaning that the maybe 20 different dinosaur types I knew as a kid has ballooned into well over 500 different species and 1,800 genera. Late at night I still hear the call of paleontology and I slip Jurassic Park into the DVD player and weep.

With each new dinosaur discovered Noah’s ark must evolve into a larger boat for some among the Creationist camp. After all Genesis says “two of every kind” lumbered aboard. The newbie this time is a proto-sauropod, a missing link between bi-pedal herbivores and their earth-shaking descendants who required four tree-like legs to support their immense weight. It seems that Noah must have been quite the engineer to handle all this displacement. And it is a good thing too — scientists predict that the new genera to be discovered represent only about 30 percent of the total, and the number will likely continue to climb for a century and a half yet.

So it seems that the God-of-the-gaps grows smaller while the ark grows larger. Of course, the dinosaurs might have evolved into all these different genera over time, but then, Creationists can’t allow for that, since it would admit room for evolution. And that seems about as likely as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints backing anti-discrimination laws against homosexuals!

The Penguin Post has learned that after years of debate and discussion, an unprecedented coalition of religious groups have come to the conclusion that penguins could not have been on Noah’s Ark. According to Rabbi Needlebaum, the spokesman for the inter-religious group that has answered this age old biblical riddle, it was ruled that penguins undoubtedly would not have been summoned to the Ark since they  spend most of their time in the water and are only on solid ground to molt, breed and lay eggs. Therefore, the 40 day flood and ensuing time it took for the waters to recede would most likely not have jeopardized the species in the slightest. The Rabbi also added that “the Ark was crowded enough–what with all the monkey’s, elephants and giraffes –and that the penguins most likely had a great time swimming,  ate plenty of white fish and no doubt enjoyed themselves very much during the deluge.”

I have yet to distinguish exactly how I felt being away when Metro Manila was devastedly flooded by typhoons Ketsana (Philippine name Ondoy) and Parma (Pepeng). It has been a month since the tragic events that flooded hundreds of homes, displaced many and even taken lives.

Back in the Philippines storms and typhoons are as much part of every year as snow is to other countries. If you haven’t been to the Philippines and in its capital in Metro Manila, part of a student’s life is to experience being sent home early from school because of another storm. And more than once in your life, you will experience finding yourself stranded on your way home in a midst of a storm (at times knee high in floods). But last month’s storms were different.The morning of Saturday, when JG told me about the storm, I shrugged it off because I thought it was just another day in Manila. I didn’t initially understood that Ketsana brought a month’s rain in just one day, and how no one was prepared to something that hasn’t happened in over 40 years.

I felt relieved that I wasn’t there when it happened. I am not the cool and collected type of person, and has proven to be very panicky in times of crisis. Had I been home during the storm, I am sure that I wasn’t going to handle having our house flooded. Not to mention that I am not a very good swimmer, not even a little bit. JG and I attended lunch with his asian diplomatic counterparts that Saturday, which was a good thing because it kept me preoccupied. Exchanging stories of similar local fruits and cooking tips with other Diplowives distracted me from thinking about our family back home.

Ironically, I also hated the fact that I was thousands of miles away. When I finally realized how serious things are and how it wasn’t just an ordinary Filipino day,but a real historical disaster, paranoia stepped in. The internet and its many capabilities gives a bit of comfort when living abroad, but this was one of those things where seeing them in a monitor is not enough. The strong urge to hop on a plane and fly home  just so I can hug them and be assured that they were okay was so hard to fight.

I got hold of my Mom and my side of the family, where I learned that our house was then being turned into a semi-evacuation center for relatives and friends who got stranded and needed a place to stay until the storm died down. I didn’t call JG’s Mom, my MIL, because she lived in a town known to be geographically placed on high ground, what I didn’t consider was that mountaneous areas were prone to flashfloods. And sure enough, the apartment where my MIL was staying all by herself was affected. Thankfully JG’s Mom got through safely, despite most of our belongings getting soaked and consequently damaged. We could only be thankful that she and our two dogs were okay – a bit shaken but okay.

The Philippines wasn’t completely safe yet, within the next few weeks, more storms and typhoons came and went. And the country and its people that were once so used to the rains, feared it once more. Even the story of Noah, his ark and the promise of the rainbow brought little comfort as some areas still remained submereged in floods for days.

Back here in the other side of the world, I found myself glued to the news, following weather reports and news flash like I never did before. The Philippine Embassy and the Filipino community held prayer rallies and fund raisings hoping to extend whatever help that they can, hoping that the combination of faith and monetary assistance can make up for our absence.  

Nevertheless living away, can really teach you some things. The Philippines wasn’t alone in its struggles. Vietnam and China was next on Ketsana’s path and it didn’t show any mercy on the two countries as well. Our other neighbor Indonesia also had a natural disaster of their own as Padang suffered major destruction and loss brought by an 7.6 magnitude earthquake. And then The Samoa Islands serene island life was destroyed by a tsunami that also left the country reeling.

One of the things that I liked about being a diplowife is that going away can really give you a glimpse of how big the world is. Being exposed to new cultures, and with nothing but the international news to hear from, you get a wider perspective of things; especially that JG is in foreign service. Had I been home, I would probably get caught up in feeling sorry for my us Pinoys and how much we had gone through after the literal storms. But because I know that there are also many others who are also going through their own kind of struggle, you learn to be stronger. Like a child who is starting to grow up, you learn that the your small world doesn’t revolve around you, and that you are not the only one who needs tending.

So I guess that’s what these tragic events brought me and my being away – somewhat wiser and stronger.
