Been a really hard at work this month and seriously need a good break but not so soon until all is over and done. I can only afford a short one for now, today, so I decided to do something to break the ice before getting back to work again.

This is it! I am taking some time off to talk about this project I am curently embarking on – Wheatgrass Project… LOL. What on earth would I want to grow wheatgrass?! Not something I thought of doing but it all started when I visited the petshop in my neighbourhood recently and stumbled upon this box of instant DIY wheatgrass growing kit. I thought it was funny as it is meant for cats! I do not know what struck me at the time but the next thing I thought to myself was, why not?? Why not give it a try?! Life is too short not to try something new, right? I mean, I have seen my cat, Bebe, eat grass outside the house compound before but I really have no idea how much she would approve this idea of home-grown wheatgrass! If she is not going to eat it I will keep it to myself then! Nothing to lose, really.

Day 1 : Preparing the ground and welcome the seed of greatness

Got the ‘ground’ ready in the plastic tray and down all the wheatgrass seed.

Was hoping that she would be impressed by it but no, she was not at all!

Everyday I watched and waited anxiously for the first baby to shoot out of the ground.

Day 2, patiently waiting and smiling at the seed.

Day 3, nothing happened at all so I started to doubt it was going to work.

Day 4, started to feel a bit upset and thought to myself, “Did I get the steps all wrong??”. Almost at the verge of giving up already but still hoping for miracle to happen.

Day 5, too busy with work, out to client’s place and came back home really late at night – totally forgot about my wheatgrass.

Out of the blue, the most amazing thing happened!

Day 6, I saw something green sprouting out of the ground! Overjoyed!

Day 7, the first sprout grew taller. Doubly-overjoyed!

Day 8, more babies were coming out to receive the light! Triply-overjoyed!

Can’t wait for more!!

Days went by and here comes Day 13, today.

See that?? They are growing taller and increasing in number, so much so that I have already lost count on how many of them now!

They are growing quickly, so is my hair. I need a haircut soon.

On the day when I was out for have a brief meeting with client these were a few spot-on shots I could not resist to take even when I did not have a camera with me at the time. My camera phone (or is it phone camera?) is a good backup but minus the low megapixel and bad image quality, though.

The power tower (or whatever you call it) shot when I touched down PJ. Got out of the usual route a bit just to get a bit closer to this gigantic thing. Funny how I had this visual in my mind at that time that the electricity from this thing was going to come right down and give me a good shock! Something like in those sci-fi movies.

The lady who has always been in this place collecting recyclable materials like aluminium cans, papers, plastic bottles and stuff. I even has a particular spot at the basement of this building where she works on the materials she collects from the big dumpster. I have so much respect for her diligence. Each time I walk through this place to and from the LRT station I see her there.

If not for people like her much more recyclable materials would have been wasted unnecessarily.

Despite the “smart phone” craze whether its an iPhone you wouldn’t want to get scratched or a Blackberry you wouldn’t like to fall into the wrong hands, nothing quite beats the robustness and reliability of a “classic” Nokia handset.

I have previously labelled the Nokia 6300/1 as like “an iPhone without multitouch” because it does everything I currently want reliably and cost-effectively with a great UK provider that rewards customer loyalty with stupendous bonuses.

Anyway, here’s a few tips on how I figured I can get more battery life out of my Nokia 6301:

• Hardware upgrades:
  • Replace the NOKIA BL-4C battery (rated at 860 mAh) with an inexpensive higher capacity (compatible) replacement battery (rated at 1000 mAh)
• Software tweaking:
  • For some bizarre reason the phone has 2 “power saving” modes: one called “power save” and the other called “sleep mode”. Turn off the latter for better general battery usage otherwise the phone has a tendency to light up and light down periodically when the battery finishes charging or when battery life is low, etc.
  • Turn off any screen savers since the “power save” mode will dim the display anyway showing you the date and time.
  • Turn off Bluetooth since no one really needs it “always on” except “on-demand” to transfer files or update the phone using Nokia PC suite, etc.
  • Turn off Wi-Fi and scan for networks only when desired e.g. in a saved hotspot that will allow free and fast mobile internet usage.
  • Set GPRS to connect only “when needed”. It may also help to increase the time delay that the push email service checks for new messages.
  • Store and set your (static) wall papers from the external memory card instead of internal. Dynamic wall papers will use more power to “run”.

That’s a few quick and essential tips for maximizing battery life. Some tips can be adapted for other makes and models of handset especially the switching off of Bluetooth which is known to zap battery life.

My Nokia 6300 is safely back in my hand again!

Ok ready for part two of my Random Act of Kindness story? Of course you are. So, I was at work yesterday afternoon and I’d just finished counting my till (there was a whole $25.55 in there! Haha) and I was walking with my supervisor Julie back up to the front to buy some gloves (because it’s COLD in the mornings when I ride to work) and a man came up to us and asked if a girl named Zoe worked here. I said, “That’s me!” He was the nice random stranger who was returning my phone to me after it fell out of my bike bag on Tuesday afternoon on the way home from work. I gave him the thank-you card and a box of Cadbury Favourites. He was a pretty funny guy too, he told me his name was Earl. I’m not sure if it really was and it was a great coincidence, or if he was joking, but it made me laugh. Anyone who doesn’t get that, clearly hasn’t watched the show “My Name Is Earl”. Albeit, I haven’t seen it in ages either, so I couldn’t tell you which channel it’s on even, but if you really want to find out more… Google it!

That’s all for this post, I’m off to eat my lunch now, not sure what I’m making but it should be interesting, so I’ll post some pics when I’m done.

Oh and yes, that is my “dashboard” in the background, I’m addicted to watching my stats bounce around. I got 10 hits one day! Wh-hoo! LOL, I’m easily amused and I know it!

“Godvervlammestemiljaardenondedju”, vloekte ik gisteren om half vijf ’s ochtends op vijfhonderd meter van mijn deur. Ik was mijn fotocamera, mijn notitieboekje en mijn zonnebril thuis vergeten. Teruggaan zou betekenen dat ik in totaal een kilometer te veel zou stappen en dus weer tien minuten van m’n leven kwijt zou spelen.

“Maar anderzijds heb ik wel nog mijn stylo op zak, alsook een hoop foldertjes, programmaboekjes, kasticketjes en desnoods bankbiljetten om op te schrijven”, overlegde ik met mezelf. “Daarbij is het een mooie gelegenheid om die 2 megapixels van mijn nieuwe Nokia 6300 uit te testen.”

Daarmee was de kous almeteens af: van terugkeren was geen sprake meer en tegelijk konden we een beetje experimenteren met de technologie van deze tijden. Soit, de onderstaande foto’s zijn niet prachtig, maar de kwaliteit is beter dan ik had verwacht. Alleen nachtelijke opnames lukken niet te best, zelfs niet als er vooral fluorescerende personen door het beeld marcheren.

Een squadron flikken marcheert over de Gentse straatstenen. Het volk duikt angstig weg, messentrekkers vrezen dat zij met een matrak op de vingeren getikt zullen worden.

Een beschonken manspersoon rust op de Vlasmarkt uit tegen een zonevreemd geparkeerde wagen. Let op de Ierse koffievlekken.

Enkele salonsocialistische yuppies proberen hun streetcredibility op te krikken.

Matthias Debusschere, vingervlug bassist bij de Gentse popgroepen Kartasan, Luxemburger en Kings of Things to Come, krijgt nul op het rekest als hij iemand vraagt zijn pot pasta even vast te houden.

Jakob Nachtergaele, drumfenomeen bij Absynthe Minded, mediteert op de stoep. Het is alom bekend dat Nachtergaele nieuwe slagwerkpatronen bedenkt door in contact te treden met zijn diepere zelf.

Valt dat niet goed mee qua resolutie en al? Ik vind van wel. Voortaan hoef ik mezelf niet langer definitief te vervloeken als ik m’n fotocamera thuis laten liggen heb. De bedenker van gsm’s met een camera verdient een plaasteren standbeeld, net zoals degene die bedacht heeft dat je voor lege Irish coffeeglazen een euro krijgt bij de Kinky Star. Zo heb ik op exact een halve minuut vier euro verdiend door lege glazen op te rapen en af te geven. Met dat geld werden vervolgens vier blikjes Jupiler gekocht in de krantenwinkel, die uiteraard al open was en ons graag zag komen. En zo werd het alweer een geslaagde ochtend en kon ik even later tevreden naar huis wandelen.

“Eu când am fost la mare la Neptun era foarte frumos. Am plecat de-acasă după-amiază, după ce două zile am făcut şi desfăcut bagaje. Restul hainelor au stat cuminţi în dressing-ul camerei de hotel iar sandalele aliniate în dulăpiorul de pantofi care mirosea exact ca atunci când îşi văcsuia bunicul bilgherii (astea erau nişte ciubote cu tureatcă, de piele, pe care i le dăduse un neamţ pentru o găină în timpul războiului – bunicul fiind “reformat”, adică a făcut războiul acasă) aşteptându-ne să ne întoarcem săraţi ca nişte guvizi şi arşi de soare ca nişte castele de nisip, gata să se răsfire, de pe plajă.”

Drumul a fost teribil. Drept pentru care m-am jurat ca în viaţa mea să nu merg cu maşina pe trasee pe care circulă şi tren. Niciun reproş celui care a condus 14 ore cu scurte întreruperi de fumat şi dezmorţit articulaţiile. Pe la 5 dimineaţa n-am mai rezistat şi am alunecat fără putinţa de a mă opri, undeva, aşa cum aluneci într-o prăpastie, într-un somn disperat. M-am trezit cu soarele înfipt în pleoape, răsărind ca o tingire încinsă cum n-am mai apucat să văd de câţiva ani, de când stau în blocul cu faţa la vest. Ne-am speriat şi eu şi soarele, unul de altul. El s-a rotit bicolor, eu eram palidă de surpriza că adormisem deşi n-aş fi vrut. Am coborât din maşină. Undeva în dreapta, ca o armată de clone, miliarde de sori holbându-se la cel viu, uitându-se înspre el ca la comandă, într-o singură privire. După mine, aş fi sărit parapetul autostrăzii (în construcţie) şi m-aş fi dus să iau o “soreancă”, aşa crudă cum era, de drag. Ca pe-o oglindă minusculă a prietenului nostru de plajă şi bălăceală. Cum mi-e destul de greu să recunosc că am devenit totuşi o persoană conformistă şi ca să nu-i dau un exemplu prost copilului, m-am abţinut.

Următoarea oprire, fierţi de oboseală cum ne aflam cu toţii, cu reflexele încetinite, incoerenţi şi iritabili, a fost la intrarea în Medgidia, la un bistrou unde mirosea a ciorbă şi unde o doamnă negruţă cu ochi migdalaţi mi-a făcut repede o cafea. Dacă nu sunteţi băutori de cafea nu ştiţi ce senzaţie minunată îţi poate da o cafea bine făcută, potrivită ca tărie, cu laptele condensat care o face mătăsoasă. O simţi cum îţi umblă prin toate ungherele trupului amorţit purtând cu ea clopoţeii calzi ai trezitului de-a binelea. Am bâjbâit destul până am găsit hotelul unde trebuia să mă cazez, doamna pilot a GPS-ului, cu voce neutră, profesională, încurcându-se definitiv şi înnecându-se cu “reconfigurăm”.

Cu nervii întinşi ca nişte fire de înaltă tensiune, am aflat că  de cazat ne putem caza la “orele optsprezece”. Am avut norocul să dăm peste o fiinţă umană amabilă totuşi care ne-a scăpat de bagaje. Feciorul meu a fost singurul inspirat în aceste momente de derută. A şi şters-o pe scări spre mare. Plaja noastră era una cu sfărâmături de scoici care abea aşteptau zona moale a tălpii piciorului, s-o pătrundă. Marea este un fenomen natural uluitor. Nu poate fi cuprins nici într-o compunere standard, nici în cele mai măiestrite versuri. Nici în frazele cele mai meşteşugite. Marea nu seamănă cu muntele pe care poţi să-l dinamitezi, să-l micşorezi, să-l diminuezi. Nu vorbesc de Himalaya, ci de oricare munţi. Muntele poate fi imitat: poţi clădi o construcţie care să-i semene, un zigurat sau o piramidă. Marea nu poate fi obţinută prin mijloace tehnice. Este un uriaş animal blând, pierzându-şi până la ţărm toate tensiunile. Astăzi îmi spunea maestrul meu că are salinitatea lacrimii. De aceea apa ei nu face rău ochilor. Cu rochia ei smărăldie cutreieră locul pe care i l-a lăsat uscatul, răsfirându-şi pe ţărm trena dantelată. Nu e întâmplător că zeiţa Frumuseţii, Afrodita (Venus), s-a întrupat din spuma valurilor… Nu există frumuseţe care să te lase fără grai, fericit şi înspăimântat. Nu e o spaimă de care eşti conştient, e una de care eşti copleşit. Marea, acest prim loc de pe pământ unde a apărut viaţa, face parte din celulele noastre şi din memoria noastră atavică. De aceea avem, în faţa ei, privind-o de pe ţărm, presentimentul primelor zile din viaţa noastră. Trecând prin stadiile prin care a trecut Viaţa, la început în mare şi ieşind apoi pe uscat, coborând din pasăre în mamifer terestru. Marea este memoria noastră vitală.

Lăsând la o parte încercările de a o defini, am petrecut pe ţărm, îmbrăcată şi nervoasă, în timp ce băiatul meu se scufunda deja după cochilii de scoici pe care mi le aduce în triumf, vreo două ore. Revenindu-mi oarecum, am redevenit din blastrula aricioasă bipedul social cu instincte ferme. M-am dus la hotel hotărâtă să obţin cameră. Am făcut diligenţele necesare şi am obţinut-o. Domnul amabil care a rămas o enigmă a acelui hotel scorojit m-a ajutat să  duc în cameră bagajele. Primul gest pe care l-am făcut a fost să mă reped la geam. Marea, în toată splendoarea ei, era acolo şi îmi făcea cu ochiul, complice.

Am coborât victorioasă pe plajă şi am intrat în valuri cu tot cu pălăria de soare care s-a transformat într-o ciupercă hilară.

La 11.30 nu se mai poate sta pe plajă. Ne-am întors la hotel ca nişte fii ai mărilor, încercaţi şi pricepuţi într-ale ei, stăpâni ai valurilor şi nisipurilor. Ideea era să mâncăm şi să ne odihnim după încercarea grozavă de a ajunge la mare. Oboseala dispăruse însă ca prin farmec sau se cuibărise într-un locşor de unde să răsară la întoarcere acasă. Însă întoarcerea era o îndepărtată morgana – aveam şapte zile de întâlniri ritualice cu Zeiţa.

Ne saluta de dimineaţa prin geam când Helios cel năvalnic îşi trimitea săgeţile de foc rostogolindu-şi carul de foc scos din mare. Ne mângâia gleznele şi ne primea trupurile cu har vindecător, căutând după răni văzute şi nevăzute. Ne împingea la ţărm, pe nisipul moale al plajei de la Belvedere, descoperită în prima după-amiază de feciorul meu, despre care, aţi observat, mă sfiesc să vorbesc, de parcă relatările mele i-ar putea invada copilăria.

Ne-a intrat în nări sărată şi verde, ne-a intrat în toţi porii, amintindu-ne, în treacăt, de mişcările pe care le-am făcut ca foetuşi. Am stat în acest uter uriaş, mirosind a alge şi a sare, generos şi necruţător cu smintiţii, ore în şir. De multă vreme n-am mai simţit atât de plenar că exist, că sunt vie, că am tălpi şi braţe, că am urechi şi ochi. Că am simţuri de care uitasem că sunt. Ca într-un ritual al recunoaşterii, am repetat aceiaşi paşi în fiecare ceas. De parcă am fi pus piciorul în memoria aceleiaşi urme lăsate pe nisip. Aţi observat că atunci când păşiţi chiar pe ţărm, acolo unde-l spală valurile, urma piciorului, presiunea lui, creează o aură albicioasă în jurul păşitului? Nu cred c-aţi văzut. Încercaţi.

Mă opresc aici…

Întoarcerea acasă a semănat cu chinurile facerii, pentru mine cel puţin. Încă sunt blocată în grota strâmtă unde aproape mă sufoc şi nu zăresc încă lumina binefacerii existenţei de dinainte sau de după. Totul mi se pare searbăd, banal, perimat şi detestabil. Sigur, cineva va trânti scurt cu securea în “funia” ce mă hrăneşte încă, tălăzuind şi murmurând. Nu-mi place apa, cred că v-am mai spus. Era să mă înnec de multe ori în copilărie. Dar marea nu e apă, cum iarăşi v-am spus… Iar aici nu e ţărmul, cu siguranţă.

QuadBand – 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, EDGE

The Nokia 6303 is a phone designed well and perfect for people who just need to call and text the majority of the time. In the hand it feels sublime and seems to fit every finger and thumb perfectly. It feels light, but has a weighty quality mainly thanks to the stainless steel casing, and just looks and feels good from every angle.

The expectations of this battery are high given it is one of the main features listed by Nokia and despite its relative paucity in capacity, it truly delivers. After 3 days and 3.5 hours of phone calls in an out, the battery meter is still at half way. Seriously impressive. The screen is a surprise. Nokia has managed to keep a similar size to the Nokia 6300, but move the keys down to create a larger screen. The brightness and clarity in bright sunshine makes for a practical viewer that is useable in all conditions.

The larger screen should make for smaller buttons, but these work really well and the phone does feel balanced. It looks as though it would be top heavy, but when texting everything feels right. The navigation key is as good as could be hoped for and the call start/end keys and menu keys could be better- they are joined to produce two functions per key which is not easy at first, but I can forgive because the rest of the keys work so well.

Call quality is blindingly good when used next to the ear. The volume is very loud when set up high, but I noticed little distortion even at high levels. The speakerphone is clear, but could be a little louder. It is obviously difficult to produce a ‘big’ sound from a small phone, but I have heard better on the speakerphone side in similar sized phones.Signal quality is also very good for standard voice and data. There was a full connection everywhere I went, but without 3G on board there is little that should go wrong on any of the UK networks.

Overall, the design is near perfect with good buttons, a large screen and a subtlety of form which looks right in any place and any situation. The battery lasts forever, the screen is clear in all conditions, the voice quality is as good as any other phone and it can be had for under £140.
