With my ICT coming in about a month time, I’m contemplating on getting another non-camera phon

With my ICT coming in about a month time, I’m contemplating on getting another non-camera phone to use it with my data SIM card.

My current non-camera phone, Nokia E61 is still serving me well but it’s kind of a hassle to switch between my data SIM and voice SIM with 1 non-camera phone. It would be perfect if I have another non-camera phone just for the data SIM. Hmmm… if with this non-camera phone purchase, I will have 4 phones… lol

HTC Touch Pro – for voice SIM, normal usage

Nokia 5800 – for data SIM, normal usage

Nokia E61 – for voice SIM, for use in military bases and camera restricted area

New non-camera phone – for data SIM, for use in military bases and camera restricted area

If you are wondering why I have 2 SIM cards, the reason is simple. Cost.

My voice SIM plan does provide unlimited data usage as a value added service but at an additional cost of SGD$75/month, so the total bill would be SGD$115/month inclusive of voice plan subscription. With separate SIM cards, I pay only total of SGD$65/month. I got the data SIM plan at a cheaper rate with my company’s corporate rate.

OK, so now to my new non-camera phone selection criteria. Here’s my requirements:

Non-camera (Of course, otherwise the title of this blogpost won’t be “New non-camera phone”)

Touchscreen

Exchange Activesync capable

Ability to install webkit browser for blogging and surfing while I’m bored

Less than $500 without any voice plan

3G (at least UTMS)

With the above requirement, I have narrowed down to 2 models from Sony Ericsson. M600i and G700 Business Edition.

So which phone will I get? Stay tune to this blog to find out more

I was having a tidy up in an old cupboard and I found some interesting items that I had forgotten I had. Most people have a spring clean but it’s amazing the things you find that you had forgotten about though.

During the rummage I have found some handsets and even though at some point last year I got rid of some old ones either by giving away or selling I have just realised that I still have a few lying around going unused, so I now have

T Mobile G1

Nokia N82

Nokia E61

Nokia 1208

Blackberry 8800

Blackberry 7100g

And thats just what I have found so far! I really do make some strange phone purchases. Time for a proper clearout me thinks!

I have been having a scout about and sorting some stuff at home when I happened across my old Nokia

I have been having a scout about and sorting some stuff at home when I happened across my old Nokia e61. I liked this handset when I had it but it was superceded by my Blackberry 8800. The only reason I went Blackberry in the end was that I could still have instant email but also HTML support for mail. I know for some that HTML on their mobile isn’t that important but on the E Series handsets it is so badly supported that trying to read mail was a complete pain due to the fact that every link showed up as it’s original html code and made trying to decipher what was content and what was code nigh on impossible.

Anyway I digress the handset was looking a bit worn and unloved so I thought I would re-house it. I could have gone down the official route and bought a genuine OEM silver housing for around £20 but I may not actually use it again that much so went down the cheap route and bought an after market black one for about £8 delivered heh. Now normally I am very sceptical of these aftermarket ones as they can be very poorly designed and ill fitting but the one I have has actually turned out ok and I quite like it. I hunted around for a black keypad but I couldn’t find one anywhere but it doesn’t look terrible with the silver one so it stays.

My sim unlocker just came in! iSmart 2008 Sim I took it out of the little box it came in, and was am

My sim unlocker just came in!

iSmart 2008 Sim

I took it out of the little box it came in, and was amazed how thin it is! People say they are scared of snapping it, but I bent it a little and it wasn’t very brittle, however when pushing it into my phone I was worried about pushing the chip and breaking a soldered leg.

First I had to cut a notch out of my sim card, I decided to use a hole puncher, but the hole was too small, but did line up (hard when its a closed type hole punch!), so i went at it with scissors. Terrible job, but it lined up well enough (with too much room to spare – messy looking!)

It took a while to get it and my test sim into the slot on my K750i, as you have to slide it down into my phone, and it was hard to keep the chip on the sim and contacts on the unlocker lined up. After a few attempts and it telling me many times I had no sim inserted, I thought I had broken a soldered leg, but tried again anyway.

In the end I decided to put a little sellotape on it to hold them together. So long as it didnt cover the contacts on the bottom that make contact with the phone, It was okay i figured. I taped them together, and slid it in, being careful not to slide the sim card in first without the unlocker. It was a tight fit, but went in without damaging the chip soldering, and worked! The O2 sim card worked in my Virgin locked phone!

I took it out, very hard as it’s normally hard to get the sim out, without the extra thickness of the unlocker. I took my normal (Virgin) sim (for now) and marked out the chip this time, and did it with scissors, cut each side, then cut the bit in the middle out with a craft knife (well, scored it, then bent it back and forth until it snapped). I cut a piece of tape and stuck it on top of the sim, laid it over the unlocker, and cut the end of the tape on each side that would stick on the unlocker very thin so it didn’t touch the contacts that the phone touches. I then cut some very thin bits to stick the sim to the unlocker (between the two blocks of 3 contacts, so very thin).

So now I have a unlocked sim card (literally!) ready to slide into my 3 mobile locked E61 tomorrow when I test it out, before putting it away until Boxing Day!

I asked on Yahoo answers if the sim unlocker and dual sim adapter would work together. Only got one answer, but apparently they don’t work together, so now I either buy another sim unlocker and tape it to my sim card with 3G internet plan (getting soon), but they are hard to fit in phones, and aren’t meant to be taken out often (I would have 3G sim in most of the time, and then put Virgin sim in once a day or more to check texts. Not very practical as most people call my Virgin phone number too, and is the one I reply from).

Or i could get my E61 software unlocked. There is a guy on ebay selling the details for 99p, but if I dug around online I could probably find it free (hate ebayers who sell free stuff!) but I might need a certain model number cable (do with K750) which I probably don’t have, but if it is just a code then I will do that and buy a dual sim adapter, and manually switch (while “online”, from phone an on-phone application) to 3G-plan sim when I need 3G, and when I’m on it, the Virgin sim will still receive calls with the newer models. Sounds better to me. Will look into unlocking methods (code/cable) – will then just keep the unlocker sim, will come in handy one day i’m sure!

Will test unlocker in E61 tomorrow (for fun, will get software unlock I think, but use unlocker until after Xmas, and get software unlock and dual sim adapter when I get my 3G plan sim card in early 2009)

Will have a play on the E61 too and let any readers I have (probably none, but its nice to document my ideas!) know if I like it, but I’m sure I will!

Well, many months ago I saw a thread on a forum on the internet. Someone was asking people to recomm

Well, many months ago I saw a thread on a forum on the internet. Someone was asking people to recommend them a smartphone. I knew what a smartphone was, and the benefits, but had never considered buying one, or even why one would be useful for me. This thread was new, and all the smartphones recommended were iPhone’s, Nokia’s, Sony Ericsson’s, Blackberry’s etc. All far too expensive for me. At the bottom of the thread was a box of related topics dating back to 2001, when the forum was started. I opened them all in tabs (I’m a tab-a-holic! I currently have 12 tabs open, which is very few for me!)

—

I realised having Wi-fi in your pocket would be great. I could come home from school (bus ride and walk home) and automatically connect to the Wi-fi and sift through my subscribed forum posts, favourite blogs, eBay auctions ending soon, and my emails while sitting down having a snack and chatting to Mum, without even having to pull out my laptop. Then I realised again, that I could go to Dads house, and wouldn’t even have to/need to pull my laptop out until I needed to do homework, if I had any, this would be convinient, and may even save me carrying an extra bag some times I stay over.

I looked into 3G, thinking how great it would be. I found something online about getting an O2 pay as you go iPhone sim card, and registering it, and getting 12months iPhone 3G web (and a passcode to Cloud wi-fi) (not normal £7.50/m “unlimited” 200mb fair usage policy 3G) – fully unlimited (great for tethering to laptop and using internet when i’m meant to be in bed and Mum sees router LED’s flashing!)…

Will be buying one of those sims in the next few weeks in the run up until Xmas (ready for the day I get my E61) – unless the freebie sim I ordered gets the free bolt-on when I register it (when my unlocker sim (for e61) comes and I can try it in my current phone!) 3G would be great to use in bed (tethered to laptop or not) and to use on the boring bus ride to school, and at school (school PC’s have had 70% of websites filtered it seems!).

—

The ones from 2001 were too old. I was looking for a phone with Wi-fi. 2002 was still too old, as was 2003, and 2004. I started looking at the threads from 2005, and alot of people were recommending the Nokia E61. It had wi-fi, 3G, polyphonic ringtones, a web browser, a full QWERTY tactile keyboard, everything I was looking for. The thread showed me it was state of the art in 2005, so I guessed it would be pretty cheap to buy now. I hopped on eBay, and had a look aroung. They were going for £50-£90 depending on accesories, condition and listing quality etc. The E61 was affordable.

The E61i is prettier, and has a 2MP camera (as does my current phone, the Sony Ericsson K750i) but I have a nice cam, and although it’s nice always having one on you, I rarely use it, and the i model costs £120+ used.

The E71 is my dream phone, but at 15 it’s hard to justify spending £240 on a phone (Pay as you go, eBay), and trusting yourself with something a fraction of the size of your laptop, and almost as expensive!

I looked at reviews, and it was very well regarded. I looked around for ages, and then called it a day, looking at eBay prices every few days. For some reason I didn’t buy one then, probably money issues (15 year old student with no part time job at the time).

About a month ago, I hopped online again when my Dad asked me what I wanted for Christmas. I had found a deal elsewhere for £70 shipped. The phone was like new, with a 2gb MiniSD, a charger, data cable, and headphone adapter. I looked on eBay again to find the prices had come down a tenner or so. A brand new looking E61 with a charger only was around £60 shipped, and with the accessories bundled with the other one bought separately, £70, about the same.

Then I found an E61 with a terrible listing, bad photos (phone face down on primary gallery view picture and blank spare fascia facing up, just looked like a replacement housing if you didn’t open the auction!) etc. The phone was locked to 3 (good job I had put an unlocker sim (iSmart 2007) in my order from Hong Kong full of Xmas presents just in case!) and came with nothing but a spare housing, as the 3rd party (?) black one installed was worn. It was £32 bid with a day to go, and £44 buy it now. Should I risk waiting? Well I didn’t, bought it, and Dad paid for it.

Arrived 36 hours later. Dad hit me up on MSN that evening and told me the screen was very scratched. I said I wasn’t too bothered, I had been thinking about replacing the case anyway. He said he thought there was no lens over the screen, but I was sure the stock ones had a lens… We were confused. I will find out with my own eyes when I see Dad on Wednesday. He said the black case installed was worn, and the silver case that came with it was not the OEM metal one, cheap plastic, as was the battery cover, and the antenna cover at the top of the back. The black front fascia and atenna cover were worn, but felt better quality, there was only one silver cheap feeling battery cover.

I was going to spray the OEM metal cover, but it doesn’t seem to come with one. I figured it was better quality, and a better fit, so might as well spray it instead of the crappy black 3rd party worn one.

Not sure whether I should buy an OEM housing (to spray and take screen lens from) or spray either plastic one (and single silver battery cover) and hope they fit as good as the OEM housing (if the phone does actually have a screen cover/lens, don’t know what to do if it doesn’t)…

Will take apart on Wednesday to see both housing inside and out to see what is what, and update with pictures (maybe) and what is what, and whether the screen does have plastic/a lens over it, as I thought the OEM did, then it will go away until Boxing Day.

Whatever it feels or looks like I don’t care for now, I’m sure I will love it when I see my Dad and unwrap it (keeping it for good) on Boxing Day.

Will update you on Wednesday, and Boxing Day! Hopefully this will be the start of something good; me enjoying using a great phone, and a blog full of E61 articles and posts!

* A final de julio de 2008
** La configuración de Mail for Exchange desde el móvil puede variar de un móvil a otro

Tocmai mi-am luat iPhone. iPhone3G. Cam acu’ o saptamana. Am asteptat foarte mult momentul respectiv si, atunci cand a sosit, am fost incantat! Cam o zi.

17. Phone Profiles: iPhone nici nu a auzit de ele, Nokia in schimb e foarte flexibil. E61 rules.

18. Selectia apelurilor (adica unele sa sune, altele nu): nativ E61 e foarte tare, pui userii in grupuri si apoi ii spui in profilul respectiv “alert for” unul sau mai multe grupuri. iPhone evident nu suporta nativ (exista niste aplicatii, ex iBlackList, care ar face chestia asta, insa la prima incercare nu mi-a mers). E61 rules.

In schimb, E61 daca era oprit si avea o alarma, pornea si suna. Cu iPhone, in aceeasi situatie , dormi in continuare fericit (doar sefu’ nu e foarte fericit cand intarzii ). Deci E61 rules.

Greu de explicat in vorbe.

E61 rules.

Concluzia: iPhone = mult mult marketing + super gadget + telefon jalnic.

I have had an old mobile phone, an SonyEricsson S700i, laying around for a while. I haven’t used it for a couple of years since I changed to the Nokia E61 (a truly crap phone). Today my nephew needed a phone. Since he seem to brake or loose them from time to time. So I decided to give the Sony to him. This gave me incentive to empty the phone from pictures, movies and what not. In doing so I found a picture (which I actually think was was taken with my phone before that, a Panasonic GD87).
