I thought I’d try something different it that for a while I’ll only be posting from my phone, a Nokia E71 using Wordmobi, which I like.

After 6 years,  I am back to using a Nokia phone.

Huh?  My family and friends did a double take when they saw me receiving the new phone.  Of late, my phones have been a Sony Ericsson K530I and a Palm Treo750,  both over 2 years old.   I’ve been waiting for the Palm Pre forever to hit our shores.   I am the last person to choose a Nokia, no matter how sleek and nice it is.

The office gave the not so new Nokia E71 for Managers and up.   I was assigned a black one but big Boss RBT exchanged it for his because he got a white one.    In an effort to beef up communications in the office perhaps? Or a long delayed gratification gift .     The phone is still a beauty nonetheless.  And Qwerty!  I am so into qwerty phones.   I don’t want to go back to the classic keyboard.

Voted one of the best phones for 2009, I’ve read.   Auntie has had one since last year and its really a handsome phone ( hehe.. I thought it was a beauty?)

Whatever, after we tinker with it this week, we’re supposed to submit it to our IT department so they can configure our office email.   Horrors! Now there’s no excuse not to have read your office email.   I knew it, a classic Trojan horse!

Despite that sneaky move which I will not dwell on anymore, I just will revel on this new phone.  Enjoy its features and be the “envy” of some.  Hehe..  I had a lot of fumbling and I took a long time fixing the contacts because I wasn’t used to Nokia’s features anymore.

Going further, I found out that there’s a whole blog dedicated to this instrument –  Nokia e71 blog here at WordPress.  I’ll be visiting it for sure and to help me max out the phone’s capabilities.

Well, except for the office email..hehe..:)

Blogging seems to have been replaced by twitter lately. I can just about manage 140 characters at the moment, but proper blog posts are a little hard. Hence the fact I’m writing about twitter, rather than how I actually feel.

I don’t know how I feel about twitter.

When it first appeared on the scene a few years ago, I wasn’t sure about it and decided I spent enough time on Facebook. I didn’t need another site to absorb my time.

Then all of a sudden it was the next big thing and I wanted to avoid it because of the hype. I am generally adverse to hype. If a band is hyped to death I usually avoid them and the same applies to websites! I also got annoyed at the way it suddenly became this brand of innovation or a fashion statement. Join twitter and show how cool you are! I hated the celebrity culture that became attached to it too. All of this meant I pretty much avoided it like the plague and didn’t want anything to do with it.

But I’ve found that I often have things I want to add to this blog and I just don’t have the time. I thought about setting up some asides (a la Matt @ WordPress), so I can update when I have little time or if I am unable to find the words. In the end though it seemed easier to use Twitter with the WordPress widget. Add a small dose of peer-pressure to the mix and I capitulated. I think I signed up under this account in April. I don’t have a personal account and don’t think I ever will. I guess Facebook still serves a purpose for staying in touch with friends.

I barely used twitter at all in the first few months. I signed up whilst I was still in The Priory as I thought I might be able to keep things updated on my phone. Easier than typing full posts on the little qwerty keyboard of an E71. I kept forgetting twitter was there though and the arrival of a netbook meant I could update here instead.

Suddenly though over the past month my tweets have increased in frequency fairly rapidly and now I’m using it every day. I don’t know what brought about the change. Funny that my twitter frequency has increased inversely to my mood. Wonder if there is anything in that?

I guess you come around to most things in the end though. I resisted for a while but a surrender was always coming.

I seem to be collecting followers and readers now too, which is nice. I felt honoured yesterday that @MarkOneInFour plugged this blog on twitter and I certainly seem to have picked up some followers through that.

Anyway I don’t know where this is going really. I just started writing and before I knew it there was a post. I know I’m really writing this to avoid writing about how things are. They’re crap btw.

p.s. I seem to have developed a tic with the word “just”. I’ve just (argh!) edited out a million from this post. Maybe I can start a new trend and it will replace the awful use of the word “like” that teenagers seem to love so much these days.

As I have promised I will let you know if new official software for E71 will be available. Today I was texted by My Nokia service that new software is there. Nokia Software Updater tells the same. Please check your devices for 400.21.013 firmware and enjoy updating your phones! Remember, as usual the update may not be available for all product codes at once!

Initially the intention was to give a jist of the size of the N900. But since I was snapping away in phone retail stores, I didn’t get appropriate angle shots so you can see how easy it is to be deceived by comparison photos unless you see them flat, centre and horizontal with comparisons of [layered] length, width and thickness.

www.sizeasy.com/ helps if you want to compare phone sizes and you’ve got their dimension. This of course ignores curves/tapering which assist in the illusion that your device is smaller than what it actually is.

The only one that’s slightly useful for size comparisons is N900 vs Blackberry Bold. (This is my mate’s Bold, snapped these just as the lecturer was walking in – but still much better to have a flat surface to take comparison shots with)

Recently had need to install the built in email application in order that I can email contact details. My normal email mode is to use Gmail but that has no access to the phones contact details as far as I understand. Had no problems (other than the usual) setting up the email but was then left with the email setup shortcut permanently on my home page. I polled a few of my learned colleagues , ex Psion, Symbian, T-mobile  … they all scratched their respective heads. After a bit of searching on the web I’ve found what seems to be the answer here:

Obviously others have had the same problem. I had to untick intellisync to remove the email setup – make sense – Don’t think so

Finally, N97 was released and I was fortunate enough to get a chance to play with it for a bit. With all the hype that it gets, like Nokia’s answer for IPhone and BlackBerry, it was suppose to be THE PHONE!

But somehow I was left dissapointed. Im not going into the full specs coz there are dozens pagges explaining it in detail out in the web. But I’ll say this, N97 should be the phone if it has the ‘juice’ to run it.

You see, the high powered phone runs at such a small memory RAM. Its like running your car on AA batteries. Its not strong fast. It makes you wait a long time just to access your browser and other installed applications. Even my E71 runs faster than the N97. Even with new firmware release, its still slow. One thing’s good is its 5MP camera and the touch screen.

Now, Nokia E72 will be released soon. Basically its an E71 upgrade. 5mp camera and 250Mb Ram (same like N97). Maybe should consider N97 instead??

Blackberry 9000 Bold and Nokia E71 are two of the best business phones available currently in the market. There is a tough fight between the two and users will surely face a great dilemma to choose one of them.

Both these challengers have got somewhat similar physical attributes as both of these are QWERTY keypad phones as well as display characteristics are also quite similar. Blackberry 9000 has got a 2.6 inches screen that allows 65K colors at 480 x 32- pixels resolution. The Blackberry 9000 users will get HTML browser for Internet surfing only, the Nokia E71 users can enjoy WAP2.0, HTML & XHTML browsers as well as Nokia browser with Mini Maps application. Document editor, GPS navigation with A-GPS support (Google Maps for Blackberry 9000 and Nokia Maps for Nokia E71) and messaging services are also similar in both of these rivals.

8MB flash memory of Blackberry 9000 can be expanded up to 8GB through the given MicroSD card slot. On the other hand, the Nokia E71 comes with 110MB onboard memory plus MicroSD memory card slot supporting up to 8GB.
