While I don’t claim to have a perfect set up, it seems to be flexible and I have very few problems. So in other words, it works for me! And as a “one man” business it is very easy to integrate new technology very quickly if needed. Anything to make life easier has to be good!

Computers

I have two. A desktop and a laptop. The desktop is where I do most of my “business work”. It is not connected to the internet. It is at least 6 years old and works flawlessly.

My laptop is connected to the web. The only work on it is my tax return program – because I have to file returns online. I do not play games on it and rarely download programs

Why two computers? Well, if a virus comes along and knocks me out, I can still work. Also, how can you hack into my work machine if it’s not connected to the internet………Yes, I take security very seriously.

Telephones

I do not have a landline. Bet that surprised you! Instead, I use Skype. No line rental and very cheap call rates. Skype is loaded on my laptop and I also have a separate Skype phone. Call quality is excellent and I rarely have a dropped call. Oh, and can video conference as well via webcam. Highly recommended.

I also have a mobile. Well two actually. Ones for business calls. The other is a Smartphone for private calls. I can do the following on the Smartphone:

write this article as it has word, excel and PowerPoint loaded along with Acrobat Reader (PDF)

download email and surf the net using “3.5G” – if available in the area. £7.50 p.m. For 500mb download limit. Doubt I download 500mb in a year! Cheap at the price though

I can also surf via my home Wi-Fi network

sync contacts and diary with Outlook when connected to my laptop

if I need to use my laptop when out and no Wi-Fi connection is available, I simply plug my phone in and use it as a modem. Somewhat slow, but it works

and I have a nifty free program called Fring loaded. This gives me Instant Messaging, Facebook, Twitter and Skype all in one program.

Oh, and it has a 6gb memory card with music etc. And my entire client files as well. And yes, it password protected and can only be accessed on my phone. No one else’s. How clever is that!!

So it’s a “proper” business phone. Not an iPhone toy (ouch).

Fax

Unbelievably, I do have a fax number as the odd person still likes to do things the olde fashioned way. What they don’t know is that I don’t have a fax machine. Instead I pay an annual subscription to Faxtastic for the number. When a fax is sent it arrives as a TIFF file via email. So I can access it wherever I am. Neat. And way cheaper and more reliable than a regular fax machine.

Software

The best bit of software I have is a PDF conversion program. I can convert word, excel and tax returns into PDF files and then email them straightaway. No postage and instantaneous receipt. Well worth the investment.

The random happenings in my life during October 2009. The names of the guilty have been changed. Bu

The random happenings in my life during October 2009. The names of the guilty have been changed. But they should know who they are. I might even be subject to some retribution…….

Burger Boy is progressing well with his driving lessons. Unless he’s a lying wotsit, he’s only bumped the curb a couple times so far.

I had my annual encounter with Big Pete. Gas bolier serviced and tap fixed. He’s my “Mr Fixit” and I don’t know what I would do without him. We always have a good bit of banter as well. His latest plan is to sell up in the UK, max out on credit cards – buying Gold – and then emigrate to Spain without telling anyone. If you never come back will anyone chase the card debts? Anyone know the answer to that one?

Internals of my gas bolier

Before you ask, I have no idea how old it actually is. Best guess is about 40 ish. It’s indesuctable and oh so cheap to run.

An obscure Skype tale for you this month. If you have a smartphone, you can plug it into your laptop and use the phone as a modem. Nothing new there. If you have a satellite phone, you can do the same thing. Somewhat costly though! Apparently this is how rebel groups in remote areas of the world keep in contact. This from a UN peace negotiator who has just got back from Darfur.

We have all heard the phrase “it’s a small world”. Here is yet another example: One of my oft quoted tales is that my Dad was on the 2nd to last boat off Dunkirk. This month I met the son of the last man off the beach – he was beachmaster. So our two Dads probably met. Amazing.

This might be just a UK thing, but did you know “margarine” does not exist? Go on, look at the tub in your fridge. You cannot find the word now can you? That’s because it’s a “spread”. Oh, and the natural colour is white. The yellowish dye is there to make it look like butter. And as you may know, it’s entirely a man made product. Change just one molecule, and it falls under the heading of …….plastic. Go on, do an experiment. Put a dollop in a dish and leave it at room temperature for a week. It will look exactly the same. No mould. No fungus. Fly’s will not go near it. And how much of it do you eat?

I have not watched the news this month as bored silly with the stupid stories they have run for several months now. Did I miss anything? And to further expand, I’m getting increasingly agitated with BBC TV. We all know they cannot advertise. But an increasing amount of airtime is spent on never ending self-promotion. They are preoccupied with the word “trailer”. I’m sure most programmes are now 3 – 4 minutes shorter than they were 20 years ago. So I’m voting with my feet and switching off or changing channel..

Whilst my TV viewing is mainly news and sport, I have watched repeats of the rather ancient Yes, Prime Minister. They must be 30 odd years old by now. And totally relevant to what is going on today. I’ve howled with laughter many times. Only goes to prove the quality of writing stands the passing of time.

Another month with not a lot of cycling done. I still feel fit though and my main season of riding is now here, so no more excuses! Here is a photo if your interested:

Mountain Bike

General Randomness

I managed to sneak a day out at Exmouth on a rather lovely day. Treated to great cooked breakfast and a boat trip. Hope you like the picture of the Marina:

Exmouth Marina

Apart from all the jokes, the two articles I have pblished this month (shameless promotion!) are:

UK’s Financial Crisis http://smarty09.wordpress.com/2009/10/28/uks-financial-crisis/

MP’s Expenses http://smarty09.wordpress.com/2009/10/28/mps-expenses/

If you would like me to blog on a specific topic, you only have to ask!

Sports News

I’ll start with probably the last bit of cricket news for a while. Australia won the ICC Champions Trophy, easily beating their neighbours NZ. It was one of those games won by bowlers.

OK, I fibbed. Right at the end of the month Gloucester cricket club announced a personnel change. The long standing 30 year old wicket keeper is replaced by a 36 year old – on a 3 year contract. “It’s for the club’s long term future” states the press release. Um, what’s the word? Bollock’s. Yes, that’s it…..

The British Superbike season concluded at Oulton Park. It was a great weekend, the highlight for me being the Saturday when the classic bikes went round. Most of them did it for fun, but 3 riders really raced. Fabulous. And the noise and the smell – nothing like it. Think I had a stupid grin on my face for the whole weekend. As usual, I walked miles, got some great photos and needed a day of rest after to recuperate. I hope the team I followed – STP – can raise the funds for next season. They are a good bunch.

Hope you like the picture of STP’s bike:

STP's 2009 Superbike

As usual I went to several Bristol City games with friends. Performances remain patchy. The gang I go with managed to get two “shout out’s” on Geoff Twentymans radio show after the Plymouth games. Lots of cheers and chanting followed and it’s a good job we didn’t crash!

Ashton Gate night game

As for Mangotsfield, well what a run in the FA Cup. A magnificent performance saw them beat Truro City after extra time and penalties. Probably the best game ever seen at Cossham Street. Then they played Forest Green Rovers but it was not as good a game. Mangotsfield lost 2 – 1 although the balance of play was about even. This game saw the biggest attendance for a many a year – just over 900. I reckon the club made about £20k in prize, gate and bar take from the 5 FA Cup games they played. Much needed finance for a small club.

MUFC warm down stetches

The best sporting moment of the year has not changed. The Australian cricket captain, Ricky Ponting. He was fielding close in in a test match against England. Batsman thumped the ball straight into his lower jaw. Ricky just stands there. Glares at the batsman whilst spitting blood. No pain displayed. Got on with game. Compare that to a professional footballer………

As for the funniest sporting moment. Well Valentino Rossi winning the MotoGP at Misano (San Marino). In the previous race, he crashed out doing a silly manoeuvre. He wore an enormous set of donkey ears on the podium with a cheeky grin. Self deprecating humour at its very best. You are sir, a GOAT (Greatest of all Time), with apologies to your hero Agostini.

For those of you technologically minded, most of this blog was written on my mobile phone. All the pictures are from the phone’s camera as well. It’s a Nokia E90. Love it to bits!

And finally my usual final question for you. Basic simple common sense seems to have disappeared. So, whose stolen it? Surely someone knows!

This bug or “feature” seems to affect at least the N97 and the E90. When the phone creates a file it uses GMT+0 as the creation date/time. Whenever the phone accesses the file the OS reports the creation date/time according to the timezone. The problem arises when you read the file using data transfer mode or if you use a memory card reader. You get the GMT+0 date/time.
OK a simple example. I took a snapshot. The name of the file was E:\Images\200909\200909A0\20092009003.jpg. The first picture shows the details screen on the E90 and the second picture the details of the file when the memory card was removed from the phone and inserted into a card reader. Notice the two hour time difference: I’m in a GMT+2 region.

Last Thursday, I wrote that we were changing mobile phone network suppliers, leaving Virgin, who have increased their PAYG prices, for a better deal—and better coverage—elsewhere. I concluded by saying that Tigger was going for the ASDA SIM while I had chosen Vodafone’s £10-per-month SIM-only deal. However, I did also say that I always have trouble making up my mind, and so it proved yet again.

I rarely have only one mobile phone on the go. I’m a belt and braces tiger and I know the fallibility of mobile networks and that where one doesn’t work, another sometimes will. Years ago I bought an Orange SIM on a PAYG tariff and stuck it in a spare phone. Many times it has come in useful when I have been places where only an Orange mobile will work.

The last few years, we’ve mostly gone to urban areas where our Virgin/T-Mobile phones worked and so the Orange SIM, in a switched off phone, was allowed to languish. A similar fate befell a Vodafone PAYG SIM in another phone. However, while Vodafone unceremoniously disconnected its SIM, taking my credit with it, Orange hung on in there and when I switched the phone on the other day, it was working happily. I felt that such fidelity should be rewarded if possible.

Now, a few years back, we were both “on” Orange. However, the service deteriorated alarmingly to the point where we couldn’t use our phones either at home or at work. Calls to customer services produced vague assurances that “the engineers are working on it” but after several months there was no improvement so we bade them farewell.

Today, Orange seems to be working well in these erstwhile blank spots and I do have tender memories of using it at the Lizard in Cornwall where no other network had coverage. So I finally took the plunge, changed my Orange tariff to Racoon (15p per minute, 10p per SMS) and asked them to port my number over from Virgin. The changeover is supposed to happen tomorrow between the hours of 11 am and 4 pm.

The ASDA SIMS arrived today, and I think Tigger will sign up for the PAYG service and port her number to it while I will keep my SIM as a backup.

So everything should be fine and dandy, shouldn’t it? Well, not quite. I had a very frustrating day yesterday though I think things have now been sorted out. I found there were problems with my online account with Orange and its associated email. I couldn’t get them to work properly. I naturally supposed this was my fault and spent hours fiddling with settings, all to no avail.

In the end I called customer services who put me through to the specialized online account department. They confirmed that there was a problem but they couldn’t locate the cause or see how to fix it. Not that it matters because once my number has been ported, I will in any case have to open a new online account and email. So the problem will be solved by dumping the faulty old account.

When you call Orange, you get the usual annoying “If you want X, press 1; if you want Y, press 2…” and so on and once beyond this nonsense you are treated to a puff about Orange being dedicated to “excellent customer service”. Did they match up to their claim? Actually, I think they did pretty well. The people I spoke to seemed to be on top of the work but didn’t hesitate to pass me on when a matter was beyond their competence.

The only criticism I have is the noise level on the line. This was especially noticeable when I was talking to the online accounts department where background conversations could be clearly heard, sometimes making it difficult for me to understand the person I was talking to.

That wasn’t the end of the frustrations, however. After much cogitation and battling of my inability to make decisions, I decided to buy the Nokia E90 as my new phone… only to find that Nokia has now sold out. You can still buy this model but it means searching around for dealers who still have the odd one left. It struck me that, however excellent this phone is, buying an obsolete model was probably not a good idea.

The nearest current model to our Nokia 9300 and the E90 appears to be the E75. Tigger has already ordered one at a good price from Amazon. I would do so too but for a little problem. (There’s always a problem, isn’t there?) They come in two colours, black or red. Tigger has gone for black. Guess which one I want. Yep, the red one. For some strange reason, the red one is more expensive, a lot more expensive. I have no idea why. The cheapest I have found is from the Nokia shop but even so it’s more expensive than Tigger’s black one from Amazon.

What should I do: settle for the black one like everyone else or pay over the odds for the red one? I think red’s nicer but black’s cheaper and quite smart. Here we go again: decisions, decisions… Which way will the tiger jump?

2. Interfata touch a Symbian e total ne-optimizata pentru… touch in ansamblul ei.

Dupa download-ul catalogului, veti vedea urmatoarele categorii:

Intrati in prima categorie, Updates & Upgrades / New versions & features. Selectati prima optiune: QuickOffice 6 / Free for Nokia ESeries:

Noutatile acestei versiuni:
– fisiere parolate

Aplicatia este platita (60 RON/an), insa merita absolut fiecare banut.

Ce face QuickAccess:

In concluzie:

-2. distanta dintre butoane e perfecta, e greu sa apesi doua taste deodata

My-Symbian has posted some excellent comparison shots of the N97 with the E90, E75, 5800 and Samsung

My-Symbian has posted some excellent comparison shots of the N97 with the E90, E75, 5800 and Samsung i8910 (Omnia HD).

A few interesting selections below:

1 – E90 and N97

E90 is huge, but that’s because of that big screen and that spectacular keyboard. Not the best looking phone though. You’d think the reason Nokia stuck the numbers row with the first letters row was because they didn’t have enough rows. 1 more row could have done it, right?

2. N97 and E75

…The E75 has four rows of keys, BUT still doesn’t have a dedicated numbers row. I guess you could close the keyboard and quickly right on the keypad – but it just seems very frustrating that Nokia puts a keyboard, yet compromises severely on the layout.

3. 5800 vs N97

3.2″ screen vs 3.5″ screen.

4. N97 and i8910

3.5″ screen vs 3.7″ screen.

5. Phone Pile!

N97 on top

Oh…and there’s a funny YouTube clip in there too but we’re sure that has nothing to do with the post’s popularity.

Well, to true Communicator fans, the E90 still reigns and here’s our take on it.

The Nokia E90 Communicator is Nokia’s flagship smartphone, and with its unique blend of mobile office applications and multimedia wizardry, it perfectly mixes both business and pleasure. The Nokia E90 Communicator is the latest addition to the set of contemporary high-performance devices for executives. The E90, the latest Nokia communicator, is the first such device to run with the same S60 user interface that Nokia uses on the rest of its smartphones, now that the Series 80 and Series 90 user interfaces have been laid to rest. The exterior of the E90 looks much like the prior 9000 series communicator devices from Nokia. As with all Nokia Communicators, the E90 has two faces: open it looks like a miniature notebook computer, and closed it’s a large candy bar phone. The Nokia E90 is different. It’s not a small phone by any means, measuring 132 x 57 x 20mm and weighing in at 210g. But it looks more like a phone than previous Communicators, and its size is such that you can make a voice call without looking like a berk!. The keyboard is actually a joy to use, particularly when texting or writing emails. I’ve even written blog posts with it, although I wouldn’t want to use it for long periods of time. The only niggle is the annoying navigation pad in the top right corner. This device has an excellent camera (3.2 M pixels) with zoom and flash, the best part is its auto-focus ability which will ensure that photos will not be out of focus.

We love our Nokia E71. In fact, we think it’s the best smartphone you can buy at the moment. S

We love our Nokia E71. In fact, we think it’s the best smartphone you can buy at the moment. So, when Nokia reps took to the Mobile World Congress stage today and announced two new variations on the E71 formula, they caught our attention.

Both ‘phones come with all the latest S60 goodness you’d expect from top of the range E-series devices: GPS, latest Nokia Messenging with HTML email, Music, 3.2 megapixel cameras and so on. They also have the latest version of the operating system with the cute screen transitions if that matters. So, let’s get down to specifics.

The first new device is the E55. This is a scaled down version of the E71. Nokia have sacrifced the full QWERTY and replaced it with a two letter per button layout for the keyboard combined with some clever predictive text softare, enabling them to shrink the device to an even smaller size than the already diminutive E71. In fact, Nokia are claiming that the E55 is “the world’s thinest smartphone” – a claim we can well believe.

If only for its tiny size, this is an appealing ‘phone. But as you know, The Guide is a firm QWERTY fan and the two letters per button solution is enough to rule it out to us.

So, the second new device is the more interesting to our eyes. The new E75 looks very similar to the E55 at first glance but then you realise that it’s a little thicker. Why? Because it has a full, great looking QWERTY keyboard that slide out from the side.

As Nokia were keen to point out today, it combines some design elements from the Communicator range in that it offers both a full QWERTY keyboard and a normal numeric keypad. The sacrifice you have to make for having a thin, pocketable device as opposed to the bulk of an E90 is that you lose the wide internal screen. On the other hand, the E75’s screen is no smaller than the E71’s and we get on well with that.

The E75 is a great looking device. On balance, we don’t think there’s quite enough here to tempt us away from our beloved E71, but if you don’t already have an E71, then the E75 should definitely be on your list of alternatives.
