SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Google Inc has won a seat at the smartphone table.

Two years after the Web search leader announced its plan to barge into the market, a dozen phones are using Google’s Android mobile operating software, including Motorola Inc’s heavily promoted Droid phone.

And software developers have created more than 12,000 games and other applications that run on Android phones, second only to the 100,000 apps on Apple Inc’s iPhone.

“This is a platform that a lot of people were very skeptical about and it’s just exploded,” Brigantine Advisors analyst Colin Gillis said about Google’s Android.

But Google’s success getting handset makers and wireless carriers to adopt its free smartphone software has not yet translated into a material benefit to finances.

Unlike Nokia or Research in Motion, which make money from hardware sales, Google is looking to prominently place its software and services on a new breed of mobile devices and gain direct access to valuable consumer data that can be used to sell ads for premium prices.

This month, Google announced the $750 million acquisition of AdMob, whose technology and network allow ads to be placed on mobile websites and within iPhone and Android apps.

Google, which recorded about $22 billion in revenue in 2008, doesn’t break out its mobile ad sales or disclose how its rates for mobile ads compare to traditional online ads.

“I think we’ll start to notice it at the end of 2010, and it will be really material in five years,” Gillis said of the impact of the mobile business on Google’s overall financial performance.

APP DEVELOPERS KEY

Despite Google’s success so far, it still has a long way to go to challenge the iPhone’s dominance of the market.

Analysts say the variety of phone makers producing Android phones could result in a less consistent product than competitors like the iPhone and Palm Inc’s Pre, in which the hardware and software are tightly integrated.

Avian Securities analyst Matthew Thornton said Google’s biggest challenge will be to ensure that a surge of Android phones from different vendors doesn’t create a potential for incompatible apps, which would turn developers off.

“They want the broadest audience, the most developers they can get on that platform,” Thornton said.

French mobile games company Gameloft said on Friday that it and other software developers were cutting back investment in developing games and other apps for Android, mostly due to the weakness of its application store.

“It is not as neatly done as on the iPhone. Google has not been very good to entice customers to actually buy products. On Android, nobody is making significant revenue,” said Gameloft finance director Alexandre Rochefort.

Media reports have suggested that Google is building its own device to sell directly to consumers. This could give it greater control of its smartphone strategy, but could threaten relationships with hardware partners like Motorola.

Google Engineering Vice President Andy Rubin, who oversees Android development and strategy, told Reuters the company has already taken an active role in developing some Android phones such as the HTC G1 and the Droid.

He described reports of a Google-manufactured phone as rumor and speculation.

“We like working collaboratively with our partners,” Rubin said, when asked if it made sense for Google to get into the hardware business. “We don’t necessarily want to acquire the expertise to take over ownership of the design of hardware. We’re a software company.”

NOT UNIFORM

Google hopes it has gained an advantage with its recently released Google Maps Navigation, which provides real-time, turn-by-turn driving directions and weaves in unique features like the company’s archive of street photographs.

But the navigation app only works on smartphones with the 2.0 version of Android — like Droid — and not on the other phones on the market. This highlights the lack of a uniform Android experience for consumers and developers to rely on.

Google’s Rubin said the variety of Android systems is no different than the situation in the PC market, where multiple versions of Microsoft Corp’s Windows exist.

Google has procedures and incentives in place to ensure that apps are compatible on different Android phones, he said.

And while Android doesn’t have nearly as many apps as the iPhone, Rubin said Android will stand out for the functionality of its apps, rather than their sheer quantity.

“Does it have every different type of application to slice and dice and all that squeaky toys and stuff that’s out there? I don’t care,” Rubin said. “I just want the best one in each category.”

In the specifications, this Nokia 3555 Phone’s camera is listed as having a 4X digital zoom, but this feature is basically useless due to the tragic quality of images under the zoom feature. The Nokia 3555 Pictures have decent quality at basic settings, but any use of the zoom or most of the other features quickly deteriorates the quality of the image. Many consumers will not consider purchasing a phone that does not have a camera or video-recording option, and the Nokia 3555 does contain these features.

This Nokia 3555 Mobile Phone’s camera does record video, but the appearance is extremely poor. The Nokia 3555 is one of the newer Nokia models. This flip phone has a fairly basic design, but the style is still edgy enough to satisfy some fashion-conscious consumers. Overall, this is not the best phone available, but it is a less expensive alternative to some of the other flip phones with some of the same features.

The Nokia 3555 phone does record sound with the videos, and this particular feature seems to work fairly well. Noises that are clear during recording tend to maintain clarity during the playback. Overall, the camera feature falls short of other phones available.

The settings on the phone are organized neatly and logically. The consumer would assume that this would make changing the features somewhat simple, but that is a false assumption. Some features are co-dependent especially for the display settings, so a change of any particular display will erase the consumer’s efforts to personalize the phone. Changing the settings simply requires time and patience. Aside from difficulties modifying the display settings, few problems occur in other setting categories. As of today Symbian users are able to use Spotify on their mobile phones. Phones that are support are for instance very many popular Nokia phones, some Sony Ericsson phones and Samsung phones. A great step forward!

Spotify has expanded its mobile reach with a launch onto the Symbian platform – a potentially huge new audience spanning around half of the global smartphone market.

As well as a large range of Nokia handsets, the app will also run on a selection of Sony Ericsson and Samsung smartphones running the Symbian platform, such as the Samsung GT-I8910 Omnia HD and Sony Ericsson Satio.

To get Spotify’s Symbian application, users can either download it directly to their phones by visiting m.spotify.com through their mobile web browser, or by entering their phone number on the new Symbian information page to receive instructions via an SMS.

As with the other iPhone and Android Spotify offerings, the Symbian app is only available to those who are Premium, i.e., paid-up members of the service.

I’m sitting now looking at the statistics for Egypt Yellow Pages mobile portal and iPhone application. I still can’t believe that the iPhone hits surpassed the mobile portal hits almost by 60%.

In the past 90 days, mobile portal pages views reached 100k whereas iPhone hits exceeded 160k. These reports are generated by admob, the mobile ad platform that has been especially popular on the iPhone, which was acquired by google this month for $750 million in stock.

If you look at the global smart phone market share you will know why i am surprised, apple is no more than 14% of the global market share with probably even less percentage in Egypt, as opposed to Symbian OS market share (Nokia and Others), which is more than half the market share.

I believe that the reason behind this mystery is that almost all iPhone users connect to the internet, download and use new applications each day. The iPhone is pretty much useless device if you are disconnected. Moreover, since its launch, Egypt Yellow Pages iPhone application has been a great success, one of the top free apps in Apple AppStore.

Spotify has, with this release, officially hit the mainstream. The majority of handsets out there use Symbian, so this presents a masive leap forward in terms of potential users, and of course, revenue.

The BlackBerry 9630 (Tour) camera is identical to the BlackBerry 9530 (Storm) camera – if you’ve read my review of the Storm camera, you’ve read my review of the Tour camera

The Tour takes pretty awesome pictures for a business phone. It lacks the accelerometer present in the Storm, so there is no auto-rotation, but it features a dedicated two-stage camera button, which is missing on most other devices with a similar form factor, like the Nokia E71.

I recently snapped matching shots with the Tour and the excellent Nokia N900. Although the N900 camera wins overall, the Tour camera holds its own – judge for yourself.
