Heya ppl. Your friendly neighbourhood wide eyed cyclist offering another update on Project: Carboni

Heya ppl. Your friendly neighbourhood wide eyed cyclist offering another update on Project: Carbonize My Ride!!! I swear I made the biggest newbie mistake ever… *groan*

So here I was bringing my bike and frame (picture cycling on 1 bike, with the frame <handlebars n forks all attached> slung across my back. Wasn’t pretty…) to Soon Seng to swap the parts over. And horror of all horrors, the mechanic told me that my front derailleur bracket that was attached to the carbon frame was a braze-on version, while the 0ne coming off my Merida was a clamp on version. So it can’t be done without me getting a new braze on front Derailleur, and he didn’t have any. So I had to cycle home (again, not pretty) thoroughly defeated and disheartened by the experience… Was super damn sad, but my never-say-die attitude kicked in..

This time, I decided to send my bike into another bike shop… Rodalink in the east. Rodalink is the distributor of Shimano parts… so I figured that if they didn’t have the ability to get the part, who did? So happily (this time I used my car and bike rack) I drove down to Rodalink to get a 2nd opinion…

Basically, the 2nd opinion was the same as the 1st. Cept that these guys could actually order the part in… which could take anything from a week to 3 months. On its own, a braze-on derailleur doesn’t seem hard to find, but I needed a braze-on derailleur for a TRIPLE crankset. Now, THAT is hard to get… By this time, I had almost given up hope and so just agreed to leave my frame (Got confirmation from the Rodalink mechanic who was V experienced in frame from the 90s that my carbon frame’s actually a Trek carbon from ‘95… woohoo…) at the shop and wait for the parts.

So now I’m going to play the waiting game and wait for the part to come in while cycling on my heavy assed Merida bike for now…. Its the *grumble* engine that counts anyway…*grumble grumble*

*New update: I’m gonna call up all the major shops in Singapore to check for the part. Finger’s crossed for the part 4!!! Hopefully I can wrap this one up by then!!

*Anyone out there with a kind heart and a good soul that has a Braze-on Front Derailleur for a Triple Crankset to donate?? Please?? Leave your contact details in the comments section if you have anything at all…

This is looking to be quite an epic topic…

The married man is the guy who is on a pose ball with his chick, dancing calling her baby in main. Reppin’ her big time in his profile. Then bam here comes the lil ping sound in ur IM window for a private chat. He just finished saying afk in main chat. Now u know u got dang well aint afk nigga u talkin to 4 girls at 1 time. Fishin for a sideline…Sideline Hoeee. You make the comment about his lady with him he just finished sayin ILY to in main. He say well that dont stop me from tellin you u sexy as hell. Yuck!

2. The Chicks Up To NO Dang Good

These chicks are the ones who do the vice versa. Stalk the profile drop the note card to the entire club or better copy only part of something u said in main chat to the whole dang club…best part is u aint even there. Jus tryna start shit I swear!

3. The Under Age Guy

THIISS GUY!!! Is that guy… U KNOW…U KNOOOOOWW GOOD DANG WELL YO PREPUBESINT ASS SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ON MIC. Sayin u 20 and u know u under 15. Heck we allll know u are. Ewel!

4. The “DJ-hoe” aka Guy wit something to prove

Well we all know a couple of DJ’s that are terrible… but dang do u have to have all your drama at every club u DJ at? Hmm. I wonder why the Sim crashed. LMAO oh it was the DJ arc nemesis terrible I don’t think I have to touch much on that.

5. The “Noob”

Ok this guy who just got to sl…. Or swears up and down his friend brought him and he swaggarific already cuz his homeboy hooked him up. PFFT NIGGA NO! We know all yo previous sl drama had u running to a new avi and u only a day old, but u look fine as a mug. We know that a real newbie is completely oblivious to a club matter of fact will probably still be typing second life out and ask you what SMH and IKR means.

There are plenty more types of people in SL. We will get to them later. Oh man oh man I got a bone to pick with the chick who thought it was cute to IM my dude and think he wasn’t gonna tell me. PFFT dead ass serious people.

I really don’t even know where to begin. There aren’t enough words in the english langua

I really don’t even know where to begin. There aren’t enough words in the english language to describe how TERRIBLE RAID WAS ON SUNDAY. I thought for a while about just swearing at you all in croatian, but I decided against it as it would be an insult to ANY language to use it to describe what happened last night.

Seriously. I didn’t realize that you guys were roleplaying being on a failboat. A sinking failboat made out of cardboard and rocks no less. If I had known I’d have brought my retarded hat and raided in tier 2 with a pumpkin on my head. Who knows, maybe the boss would have been freaked out that it was some gay orgy and just committed suicide.

I started making a list of all the failures for this post. But my pen ran out of ink and my table collapsed under the weight of all the paper that was needed. Then I looked at the list and comtemplated quitting WoW to go harrass people on Aion instead. But I heard the game has a lot of a grind, and Zyphe went to play it, so it’s probably full of noobs like him anyways. lol.

In all seriousness though, and without any humor intended, WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT LAST NIGHT. People dying with hand of protection on them 1 yard from an ice patch. Nobody had an accurate DBM apparently, most people who tried to interrupt were over 6 seconds off (consistently) or didn’t interrupt at all. It took the raid 10 attempts to stand on a FUCKING SINGLE SPOT. It took 15 attempts for the raid to sort out when to AOE and when to single target. Even after we “figured it out”, several people AOE’d early and pulled aggro and died. The best part of it all is when I’m saying “loose mob loose mob” and the tank is taunting it back to him, PEOPLE CONTINUE TO AOE AND PULL IT BACK OFF HIM BEFORE IT CAN REACH HIM BECAUSE OF THE ICE PATCH SLOW EFFECT. Nobody is even paying the slightest attention to what they’re doing on that fight. And don’t get me started on some of the pickup and kiting failures.

In fact, the ONLY thing that didn’t make me wish for an anurism and a swift painful death last night was the healing in phase 3. The healers did quite well at keeping up the people with the earlier frost debuffs. That being said, the groups weren’t quite self-sustaining and some of the healers went down to leach damage (I’m not quite sure how). So that was unfortunate, but would be easily corrected with a few rejuvs and shields bouncing about.

So, it was a bitter-sweet night of wipes. Bitter in that I realized 3/4 of you play WoW about as well as retarded monkies. Sweet in that we had two very nice phase 3s, and if we had managed to get to phase 3 with a full raid more often, I feel we would have made excellent progress. We did achieve a 20% best attempt though, which is reasonable. Not spectacular but acceptable.

Hope to see you all there. Hopefully we can patch up this failboat, hoist the sails, and fucking STOP BEING BAD.

As always, I’ve been perusing our dear Internet for ideas on how to improve this place’s

As always, I’ve been perusing our dear Internet for ideas on how to improve this place’s visibility and appeal. My findings were quite useful, probably because I’m such a noob that nearly anyone’s advice is more than I already know. Check out this neat quote I found:

“Blogs are often too internally focused and ignore key usability issues, making it hard for new readers to understand the site and trust the author.” -Jakob Nielsen

This is the summary of an article on the top ten weblog design mistakes. I’ll interact with several of those points here, but you can click the link if you want it from the horse’s mouth. As they say. Sounds kind of offensive to me. Some of the points, while valid, were ones I chose to ignore because I’m not running a professional blog. I have strong preferences too, and where better to exercise them than on my own website? But I do care about you too. How can I serve you?

The first mistake was a lack of author biography on many blogs. Which I’m guilty of. I’ve been meaning to update that, so I’ll do that now. I’m supposed to write something that will get you to trust me – my expertise and my sincerity. My natural instinct is to let the writing speak for itself, but I guess it makes sense that you would want to know more about where I’m coming from.

I’m going to take a rain check on the author photo, however (I don’t understand that idiom either, could someone who runs a blog explaining such things enlighten me? I’m too lazy to Google it. My, my). I prefer to let your imaginations roam freely, but I will start you off by disclosing that I have brown hair. Do I have a peg leg? Is my hair naturally brown or just dyed currently? Am I Asian? Indian? Hmm…stick around.

Apparently my titles are inadequate. They’re too cute and humorous (aw, thanks for saying I’m funny! See, what you don’t understand is that I’m practically a prostitute for humor permeation. An out-of-business prostitute, ugh). Titles should be far more informational, for they’re the most valuable words I type. People on average only read the first three or four words of a title, according to the article. And they don’t want to be messed with. I think I may politely decline on this point too, however. I like my titles. I’ll count on the tags to pull you guys in.

I haven’t done too much with links yet (although you’ll notice an increase already in this article), but because I plan to this next warning is also useful. I need to be clear about where my links lead. I like this line: “Life is too short to click on an unknown.” How true. And yet not…one could argue that life is too short to only click on what you know. Those “life is too short” arguments are typically fallen. But point taken. I think I’ve been doing a decent job; you’ll find on my title page that I explain the difference between clicking on the Writing tab at the top and clicking on the categories list to the right. I also detail how to subscribe to the RSS feed, because up until recently I myself did not know about this feature and its capabilities. Even now that I know about it and use it to keep up with the news (in theory), I’m terrible about checking it. I’m sure you’re more diligent, so to be added to your subscription list would truly be an honor.

Good reminder to keep my most popular posts accessible, so new readers can get the best first, and also to link to other posts from entries that reference them, so readers can get the whole picture. Obvious stuff, but like I said, I’m a noob. I’m also completely guilty as charged of “mixing topics”. But I did tell you in my disclaimer that I wouldn’t keep these linear. I will completely knowingly wander around a bit, or a lot. I want to, so like always, the desire will trump the logic. I hope you’re okay with that. If you ask nicely, I could write a really focused post on a topic of your choice.

Here’s a helpful hint for Mac users: When clicking on links, hold down the command key to open that link in a new tab so you don’t lose the original article. There’s no telling how long a simple ‘Back’ function will take. If you have a PC, I’m sure there’s some equivalent. I’m not a hater, I used Windows for eighteen years of my life. Yes, I was using a computer from the day I was born, yes.

Mixed topics are, at present, a characteristic of this blog. You get a little of everything. I have been told it makes the entries seem more ‘real’. You may think differently. Never fear, I plan to diversify. At least I’m not putting posts in numerous categories. I would not have thought that anyone would be guilty of that, but there wouldn’t be a warning if there weren’t the mistake, right?

Funny story: I was at the contract-signing for my new job (English teacher, detailed here) and as we were going through the contract, the staff member mentioned that every clause in the document is there because some past employee has attempted said activity. That’s hilarious, considering how comprehensive the contract was. For example, I’m required to wear a dark suit to work. “It doesn’t have to be black – it could be navy, or dark ash…we just ask that you don’t show up looking like a pimp.” Haha. I would’ve liked to see that. Maybe not a funny story? Okay. Mediocre recollection of an amusing occurrence.

I’m supposed to write like my future boss will read this. Or my future wife (that wasn’t in the article but I think it goes right along with boss and might be even more worthy of consideration). I understand that. But I take it with a grain of salt. The chances that either of them will ever view this is quite low at present. The chances that they’ll be offended is significantly lower. I tend to think I’m a naturally inoffensive guy, except to easily-offended people. But on the other hand, I can never know what someone will take issue with. I do have strong opinions. You can call me out if you want. We can talk.

And finally, having a domain name owned by someone else. Yes, WordPress. I’m alright with that. Sure, it screams newbie. I’m not doing this for a living; I don’t consider it worth paying any money for just yet. At least WordPress is better than Geocities. What the heck is a Geocity.

Those are the top ten weblog mistakes I found, as told by Mr. Nielsen. I’m sure there are many more I’m committing as we speak (merely an expression used here for endearment). Ah well. Live and learn. Live and earn.

Before when I was in the bathroom I had a great idea for a new wing I could add to this building. I’m really excited about it, so maybe it’ll already be started by the time you read this. I’m thinking about calling it ‘Introductions’.

Nice to meet you.

This may be posted after the event but I’d just like to extend a big 6 Inch Move welcome to the latest contributor to the site, nBreaker. As the rest of us on this site are somewhat veterans of pushing metal and plastic figurines around the tops of cleverly disguised dining room furniture our newest author should be able to bring a view of things that may escape us Longbeards. I am sure that I had thought up some highly amusing anecdotes with which to embellish this welcome, but, as with many things in life, I didn’t write them down and henceforth forgot. Trust me though, it was hilarious, just chuckle to yourself quietly and pretend I didn’t have a memory like a … wait… what am I doing again?

Oh, right!

So, welcome to the club nBreaker. Just watch out for Servitob’s dice rolling and things will be fine.

So you’re telling me that not only do I have to go through the difficulties and hardships of signing up, but now I have to update my profile, update my settings, choose a theme, choose some widgets, update my theme options, and on top of that write some goshdarn content?!

Holy crap, and i thought this was going to be easy.

I, amongst others I’m sure, have been drawn to the mystic and mystery of, ‘the blogging world’ (Yes, I did just say that out loud in the creepiest voice imaginable). It all seems (and still sort of does) very supernatural to some degree. I want to be part of the internet community, which seems very intriguing, but also seems almost out of my reach.

Quite frankly, I’m on here to express how I feel. I’m typing this because I want to share all my lovely little thoughts with the world. Aren’t I so nice?

There you go, that’s my little introduction. It’s not perfect, but it suits me perfectly. And I think that’s all that really matters, don’t you?

I know usually we more experienced players are the ones trying to give advice to the noobs. Sometim

I know usually we more experienced players are the ones trying to give advice to the noobs. Sometimes they take it and learn, and sometimes…well, we’ve all met the others.

But I’ve had the unique experience this week of being a noob again. I have a slight case of Altaholism (it really is very slight compared to a lot of you!), and got my third alt to 80 this week.

When I leveled Ambermist, I was a pure, unadultered boon. I remember turning to my then boyfriend, coach, and forever mageboy Ultraking and asking him how to get a farm and why anyone would want to go “farming” in a video game. Westfall was still exciting, and the day I learned you could eat and drink at the same time (thank you for loading screen tips, Blizz!) was a really great day.

When I leveled my mage, I mostly understood the dynamics of the game, and I had a pro mage in my pocket to give me advice on the way up.

But now I have a paladin at 80.

I’ll tell ya, leveling was cake. Sorry, paladins, you are all freaking overpowered. I love it, and soloing 99% of the group quests from Princess in Elwynn to Ursoc in Grizzly Hills made for a fun and easy trip through Azeroth.

Now I’m at the instance stage, working on gearing her up. She’s dual specced prot/ret, so I’m dpsing the harder instances and tanking the easier ones.

I’m used to going into a heroic and roflstomping it, so learning to play a new class and a mostly new role has been a challenge and a treat. I’m currently specced to tank on Amber, it’s true, but because of some very lucky drops and an occasional shortage on leather-wearing melee, I was already in full epic ilvl 200-245 gear the day I specced for bear. There wasn’t a real learning curve. I walked into the first few heroics I tanked, got back into the rotation, which is still pretty similar to what it was in BC, and learned my new abilities. I’m pretty sure no one in those PuGs would have known I hadn’t tanked since BC if I hadn’t told them.

My pally is a different story. It’s a whole new set of abilities I’ve had to learn and master. A new way of itemzing, of pulling, and of maintaining aggro. Not to mention that regular ToC PuGs are full of other new 80s, and I’ve been reminded of why I used to cringe in horror when someone suggested a PuG. I’ve been in several fail groups lately, but I’ve also been in some really good ones.

Here are the things I’ve learned about being a noob:

1) Being a noob is okay. It takes time to learn how to play WoW, and it takes time to learn a new class, even if you’re experienced.

2) Admitting that you are a noob can be good. It takes some humility to admit that you don’t always know what you’re doing and that you might very well screw up. No matter how many times you’ve gone over your rotation, there’s going to be a moment where a mob runs loose and you completely forget that Hand of Reckoning is bound to your G key, and you might panic. It’s okay to apologize for the blunder and laugh it off. It’s definitely 100 times better than pretending you’re super leet and that it’s everyone else’s fault (you’d be surprised how many times I’ve see that reaction this week; or maybe you wouldn’t).

3) Having friends on the inside can be a big help. One of the coolest things that happened this weekend didn’t happen to me directly. When I asked in guild if anyone had a low-level alt that might like to run regular UP, a guildy whispered me and asked me to invite his friend. Her response to me was, “one sec, I need to check his level of insanity.” Turned out she had been retired from the game for a long time, and didn’t know the instance. I explained the boss fights to her, and she came through it like a pro. Bonus: she got a great new wand, and I was pretty happy for her.

This has also worked for me. I’ve been watching guildies with paladins in action very closely this week and asking for advice from sources that I trust, and whose experience I can see with my own eyes every week.

4) /Friend is…well, it’s your friend. If you end up in a good PuG, or even a crappy PuG that has a shining star in it, put those people on your friend list. Most of them will probably not become permanent fixtures in your WoW experience, but a few might become frequent fliers, and you’ll find yourself getting invited to instance farming runs or with a healer who’s always ready and eager to come along.

5) Enjoy being a noob! Leveling a character or an alt breathes new life into the game. I was so excited when I hit 80 that I spent most of my time for the next three or four days making and buying gear, running instances, and playing around with her professions. It probably won’t be long before she’s just another toon for me, so I want to enjoy her shiny newness while it’s still available.

————————

However, in news from the Battle Chicken front, I did run ToGC 10 this weekend and got a couple of really good upgrades (and A Tribute to Skill to boot!). I’m eager to see if they make a difference in the raid tonight, so cross your fingers for me, my fellow moonkin.

So I have been on a bit of a title kick lately. Diary, why is it that people are so obsessed with ti

So I have been on a bit of a title kick lately.

Diary, why is it that people are so obsessed with titles? I know I felt the draw to have a title the moment I signed back in after a 9 month absence… I was in Black Rock trying for the Jenkins title within the week! I was like the only one running around without a title on my name… so I went and got one.

The problem with titles, however, is that there is no other real benefit to getting the title other than vanity. And for the most part, the vanity is all self-serving and rarely gratifying beyond the initial achievement, (of course, that is what the whole achievement system is, on a whole, anyways, so I guess this is to be expected).

I have also found that there is a discrepancy between titles as far what you have to do to get them vs. what other people think of you when you display them. Titles seem to fall into different categories, and all seem to exhibit the the “noob vs. leet” tension that is pervasive throughout all MMO’s.

1. Noob
2. Psycho
3. Leets
4. Huh?

This is what I have found, (I don’t personally prescribe to these feelings, this is what I have OBSERVED in other people’s attitudes).

Noob Titles - these are titles that anyone can get if they are a warm body and can roll their face across a keyboard (again, not my opinion). General consensus is that titles like “Jenkins” and ”Explorer” are easy to obtain if you have the patience for them and rarely require any special technica

Psycho Titles – the are titles that you get for, lack of a better term, a psycho player. Titles like “Seeker“, “Loremaster” and “the Insane” fall under this catagory. Usually a vast investment of time is required to gain these titles.

Leet Titles – Titles that require “skills” to obtain.. such as raiding/arena titles . (i.e. “Gladiator“, “Of the Nightfall“).

Huh? Titles - I guess this is where all the “other” titles go… ones that, when you see them, if you didn’t yourself participate in the gaining of the title, have no idea what it stands for or how the person got them… (i.e. realm firsts like “The Celestial Defender” or titles that are no longer available, such as “Hand of A’dal“)

Am I saying titles are bad? Heck no! They are fun to get and do show status/time spent on character, but in the overall view of the game, it isn’t obviously necessary I think it’s just fun to see what other people’s perception are towards them.

Btw, Diary, I achieved the “Crusader” title a few days ago, hence my renewed interest in this topic. Yay me!

Been thinking about launching a new website for the Honda/Acura brand. It’d be something similar to a s3 magazine in terms of feature cars, latest news from the Honda brand and a forum for exclusive members. By exclusive, I mean you have to be voted in by the appearance of your car. Those rejected would be given a summary statement on why they weren’t accepted. In the end though, the admin would have to make the final judgment.

It’d be cool, cause we’d have t-shirts for sale, stickers, shit like that. I’d have a military style ranking system. Of course, Officer ranked members would be exclusive members, admins and mods. Monthly contests to earn a higher rank faster than getting a certain post count to unlock different areas of the forum and/or ROTM(Ride of The Month).

I have some other ideas in my head and what not. Dunno if this would be a good idea, but it would definitely keep the trashy looking cars out of the forum and all the hate. It’d make for a tighter community and all that type of neat shit.

Feel free to put your input on this if you have any, positive or negative. I don’t know jack-shit about doing something upto this caliber. Any help would be cool as well.

I’ve started this blog for a couple of reasons.

I need to vent a lot of the time.

I need somewhere where I do so, without real life people reading it too.

See, I’m fairly web 2.0; I have Tumblr, LiveJournal, Flickr etc. but at least one person I know from real life reads them, and knows my profile, and some of the things I’ll be writing in here aren’t really what I’d like them to be reading – sometimes the sort of thing I should talk about to people, but I have problems with trust and telling people things.

I think this will do for now. I’m bound to update later this evening. I have things I want to say, but now’s not a good time.

I came across this word through one of my fraands (and now co-worker) on Twitter. I was a bit perplexed at what that meant. “nOOb”, he explained, was a a “newbie”. A new bee – n O O b. Interesting choice of alphabets to depict the full word.

So here I am. a nOOb. To blogging. I admit to being bitten. WordPress wins. I lose. I succumb to the seduction of writing about my thoughts in front of millions of people. Anyone can read it. Anyone can comment on my personal thoughts. A bit unnerving – but definitely engaging. Blogging – here I come. My first post on my first ever blog. Strangely nice!

A quick introduction – As this is my personal blog, I will write about things that I think about, dream about, aspire to be, push others to be, thoughts that fleet by before I can catch them, comments that I discuss with the voicetap team and my family from time to time. The objective of the blog is not so much to have more people know me better (not sure how much thats worth), but more so to try and help and goad others to… as the wise monkey in Lion King 3 says - ‘look beyond the obvious’. Hakuna Matata. PS: I know that phrase thanks to my 2 year old son, Shaurya – who watches ONLY this movie day in and day out.

So – with my introduction done and over with, I will commence writing (from tomorrow) with the one question that I have always had for the ‘big-wigs’, and have been asking everyone from the time Dewang Mehta was at the helm of NASSCOM till today.

Why is it that there are no global companies that come out of India?

If you have any thoughts on this – put them up. My thoughts on this – tomorrow. Watch this space.

Cheers,

M

Et puis j’me suis demandais ça.
