“Queensbridge: the world’€™s largest housing project, with the richest legacy in hip-hop: from The Juice Crew, to Nas, Mobb Deep and the realest of them all: Tragedy. While still in his mother’s womb, Tragedy’s dad is shot dead. Thirteen years later, with his mom hooked on smack, Trag has to hustle to survive, but the kid’s a rap genius and is signed to the world famous Juice Crew ’til he’s busted and sent to Riker’s at 16. Prison sentence: On December 27, 2007, Tragedy was convicted of selling narcotics and sentenced to a maximum of four years in prison.
He is scheduled to be released on January 21, 2011

Walking back from a shooting in Harlem, we bumped into Stretch Armstrong, right in front of WKCR (!)

That’s the station where he started -in 1990- what would later become the Stretch and Bobbito Show, which many consider the best show ever.The guy NORE used to call “the albino ostrige” recalls a number of great moments and a greater number of (then) unsigned rappers who blazed the show : cats like Jay-Z, Eminem, Big Pun, ODB, Big L, Biggie, and also a 16 y.o kid in shorts named Nasir…

One of Fat Joe’s affiliates passed away this weekend after a lethal shooting in New York. Mike Beck, a member of Terror Squad’s K.A.R. collective, was shot and killed Friday in Brooklyn. According to reports, the motive for the senseless violence was attempted robbery.

Fat Joe confirmed the death of his friend via his Twitter page saying,

“RIP Mike Beck!!!!”

Noreaga also confirmed Beck’s passing saying,

“Rest in peace. He was a real dude, Mike Beck. I did records for him n he ate in my crib, n drank too. fucked up my weekend. R.I.P. Rest in peace Mike Beck, our running challenge is now dedicated to his memory.”

Mike Beck was featured on several Terror Squad projects and released mixtapes with his “Kill All Rats” family of Onez, Rob Kash and Leader.

The VH1 Hip-Hop Honors received praise across the board for commemorating one of the most successful Hip-Hop labels of all time. Performers paid homage to some of the label’s greatest successes with performances from Public Enemy, Warren G, Foxy Brown, Onyx, DMX, Method Man and Redman.

While the show was widely accepted as a successful celebration of the label’s 25 year of success, not everyone was satisfied. In particular a rapper from Queens felt left out. Noreaga felt slighted from this year’s program and did what upset celebrities do best these days, he took to his Twitter to vent.

Nore logged in as @Noreaga expressed just how he felt saying,

“I feel invisible!!!!!! I never get noticed, I never get props I deserve!!!”

He continued on his rant, bringing up the production pioneer team of the Neptunes who contributed to his hit “Nothing “, also mentioning that former Def Jam executive, Lyor Cohen, personally tracked him down to sign to the label.

“I bet if they honor the Neptunes my name wouldn’t even come up. They’ll give everybody else props!!! Lyor stalked me to be on Def Jam.”

Not wanting to sound like a hater he ended his rampage with one last tweet saying,

“It’s a good show fuck it I’m not a hater just feel invisible but imma manage to manage!!!”

Poor N.O.R.E., he gets no love.

Noreaga released God’s Favorite and N.O.R.E. Y La Familia on Def Jam. Both albums spawned two big hits for the MC, “Nothing” in 2002 and the huge crossover hit, “Oye Mi Canto” in 2006.

If you don’t think Cuban Link is nice on the mic, go back and re-listen to “Off the Books.” Dude absolutely kills his verse, which is really saying something considering Pun rhymes first. Originally from Havana (he emigrated with his parents at age six) Cuban Link came up rapping with Pun and Triple Seis, and was kind of like the Cease to Pun’s Biggie (albeit much more talented.) Of course when Pun died, Link’s career fell into the hands of Fat Joe, with whom he apparently never had much of a relationship. For whatever reason (widespread bootlegging, monetary disputes with Joe), Link’s Atlantic debut was never released, and he pretty much disappeared before reemerging in 2005 with the self-released Chain Reaction. Cuba definitely got a raw deal (he’s one of many), but after listening to 24k I doubt the album would have done much even if Atlantic had released it. The lyrics are solid as usual, but most of the production is on some Tonka shit, and at 24 tracks the album feels bloated as hell. That said, there are definitely a few joints on here, particularly the banging “Men of Business.”

Cuban Link — “Men of Business” ft. Noreaga, Kool G. Rap, Lord Tariq and M.O.P.

What a fucking lineup! You never hear tracks like this on New York albums nowadays (at least not on major-label releases) mostly because NY emcees are busy recruiting whoever’s hot right now from the West or the South (or, in Jay-Z’s case, Drake, Kid Cudi, and MGMT), but in 2000 New York still ran shit, at least to some extent. A major-label posse track could still consist of six hard rhymers from the Big Apple (who weren’t just the main dude’s weed carriers)  because NY artists were still relevant and considered commercially viable. Shit, G. Rap was the only dude on this track not signed to a major. I’m not saying that hip-hop shouldn’t grow, but I’d much rather hear these guys on a track together than, say, Gucci, O.J., Plies, and Rick Ross. I mean, wouldn’t everyone?

Anyway, back to the track: Nore’s at his best here, making up what he lacks in complexity with those trademark “did he just say that?” non-sequitors. Cuba comes off like Pun’s natural heir, while veterans G. Rap and M.O.P. do just what you would expect them to. The real surprise here is Lord Tariq, who I really only know from that “Uptown” song he did with Peter Gunz. I always thought of him as a one-hit wonder, but he actually kinda murks his verse. Makes you wonder why he just disappeared. The best thing about this track—and what sets it apart from so many other posse cuts—is that everyone’s shit is sharp. You can actually have an interesting argument about who came hardest, because a case can be made for each emcee. I can’t even remember the last time I could say that about a song.

Royal Flush released his classic debut album Ghetto Millionaire back in 1997.  Ghetto Millionaire featured production from Buckwild, L.E.S. The Beatminerz, EZ Elpee plus a young Hi-Tek, it also featured collaborations with Ja Rule, Noreaga and his longtime collaborator Mic Geronimo.

CNN’s Nore has shared his reaction to Perez Hilton wanting to use the “n-word” towards Will.i.am in their publicized dispute last month and said the blogger should have kept his comments to himself.

“To be perfectly honest with you, I was appalled,” Nore said in an interview. “I was real upset he could admit that. At the end of the day, we have a black president. We’re moving on in this world…And the fact is, we still deal with that regular racism that’s going on…I respect gay people, I hate f*ggots. This guy is a f*ggot. And the difference is, a f*ggot is a person who hates everyone else who isn’t gay. A gay person is a person who is just happy to be gay. So when he has the audacity to admit that he wants to use the n-word, it was just like the most disrespectful thing in the world. Because even for him thinking like that, thinking to say that, he shouldn’t have even admitted to that. At the end of the day man, this sh*t needs to be addressed.” (Vlad TV)

Hilton reportedly admitted to wanting to use the derogatory label towards Will.i.am in an interview.

But Perez tells me that, in the heat of the moment that night, he almost chose to use a different word. “I thought about calling him the n word,” he says over the phone a week after the incident, “but I thought the ‘f’ word was even worse. I was so filled with hate at that moment because I was hated on so much, and I reacted in the worst way possible. Then I went on to make a bunch of other mistakes. I shouldn’t have made the video. I shouldn’t have released so many statements. But what’s come out of all of this is that I’ve learned so much about myself, and I’m in a much better place. I’m actually thankful that it happened. As cheesy as it may sound, I had almost a spiritual moment when I just let all of the anger and worry go and am now filled with peace, happiness, and wisdom. (The Advocate)

Both men made headlines after Hilton posted a Twitter rant about being assaulted by the Black Eyed Peas member.

“I’m in shock,” he wrote. “I need the police ASAP. Please come to the SoHo Metropolitian Hotel now. Please…I was assaulted by Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas and his security guards. I am bleeding. Please, I need to file a police report. No joke.” (Perez Hilton’s Twitter)

Nore is known for having a public conflict with Hilton earlier this year.

in 1988 onyx was formed in new york city, onyx then consisted of; fredo starr, big ds, and sonsee.    they then released their first 12″ “Ah, and We Do it Like This”, in 1990.  in 1991 the group added sticky fingaz. after that they released throw ya gunz in 1992.  they then signed with def jam. in 1993 onyx released bacdafucup which won them soul train’s album of the year. and slam went to #5 on the hip hop charts.  big ds then left the group stating that he did not get enough lines in the songs. then in 1995 onyx relased all we got iz us.  they got much less airplay because of their not so radio friendly lyrics. their head single “last dayz”  hit #89 on billboards  hot 100.1998 was the year onyx released their next album entitled “shut ‘em down”    this album featured; method man, big pun, dmx, the lost boys, raekwon, noreaga, and 50 cent.  the group left def jam after this album and members pursued solo careers.  in 2002 they signed to koch reords and released two albums on this label. bacdafucup II, and in 2003 triggernometry.  these albums are terrible.  so terrible at numerous live shows onyx told fans not to buy them.
