For some time I have enjoyed various different blogs but never thought of starting one myself. So I thought seeing as I tend to have an opinion on most things I thought it was about time to start a blog. I work in motor sport which is fantastic but also very frustrating at times. With PR being part of my role I have to write things and make them sound interesting so I thought this blog would also act as good practice for all things PR ish.

I work for iSport International. We compete in GP2 and GP2 Asia at the moment and I would say we are a pretty successful team. We are based in the rural depts of Norfolk, a wonderful place bringing Snertterton, Lotus, Colemans Mustard, Bernard Matthews and Delia Smith to the world. We tend to do things our own way and keep to ourselves which I think in large part has been a source of our success. We are a small team but thats how I like it. Sometimes I will most likely moan about my frustrations, how I wish PR was taken more seriously and how I want to go to mare races but essentially I do love coming to work each day. You never know what is around the corner and things change in this industry very quickly.

My aim is work in Media Communications in Formula One one day but its tough getting there in such a competitive industry. Although I do not live for F1, F1 is the only place in which I will be able to focus solely on media comms in motorsport most likely so that is where I have to aspire to be.

Anyway, this is only my introduction so I will leave it there.

Tak tau la bile meke bincang2 nak lunch togede2 ni. Tau2 malam tadi si Hui tu came to my place and asked me not to bring my lunchbox today. Aku baru jek plan nk qada’ pose. Tp mmnuhi undangan tu kan wajib kan. So i agreed. So tghari tadi we went out with Bae’s car, mkn kat shopping complex beb. Tapi nk agreed on which restaurant pye la susah. We listed down Mexican, Chinese, Indian, American. Si shailu tu xleh mkn beef dan aku la paling byk constraintnye. Heheh. Xde fish aku tak boleh. Sibaik la meke mmahami. Last2 pegi foodcourt jek. Kakaka. Pilih sdri nk mkn ape, carik meja, duduk. Senang citer.

PScape version - Mati aku klu meke tgk gamba nih. Heheh..

Ori version - 4 Asia people. I'm gonna miss them especially si Hui yang slalu jd bahan hiburan kami. Ehek.

Masa makan tu meke byk duk interbiu aku la since aku yang nk blah kan. Byk2 topik tu kluar lah citer bab anak. To my surprise, meke seme plan to have AT MOST 2 kids. Erk. And to their surprise, harapan aku plak nak anak 4-5! Bile aku ckp husband aku adek bradek 10 dan aku plak 7, meke lagi la gelak sakan. Ekekeke. Di china ade policy, lebih kuang mcm spore jgk la, subsidi anak ke-3 dan sterusnye kurang or mukin tak dapat lasung sbb negara meke tlalu ramai sgt pduduk. No wonder lah si hui and her husband themselves adalah anak tunggal. Di India plak xde policy mcm tu, tp si shailu and her husband decide not to have many kids. Mukin 1 dah ckup.

Mereka question aku mcm mana nk handle anak ramai2? Errr…Aku tak xpect pon dpt soklan camtu. Heheh. Mukin p’bezaan culture, govenment policy and religion m’pengaruhi persepsi mereka. Aku b’seloroh, the more, the merrier! Aku xpect meke akan gelak2 manja, tp turn out si Hui ni plak cannot get the word. So jd sesi translation plak. Huhu.

Sape2 yg tak nak stress dgn soklan2 bile nak dpt anak, bile nk tambah anak, boleh la b’hijrah ke China sbb di sana anda adalah golongan yang normal.

Saw on the news this evening that FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, has told the state

Saw on the news this evening that FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, has told the state that the people who got flooded out of their homes and lost practically everything they owned, don’t qualify for Federal disaster assistance.

The November Nor’easter earlier this month flooded hundreds of people when the stormed merged with the remanents of Hurricane Ida and stalled off the coast for several days. Instead of blowing through off the coast it sat and constantly pushed water into the area.

People were unprepared not realizing the storm was going to be this bad, estimates is it was much worse than Hurricane Isabel in 2003.

The state, already strapped was hoping for Federal assistance to help these families get back on their feet.

I am sure a good number of these people were renters and were not carrying renter’s insurance. Hopefully, this is a lesson to others to get that coverage. It’s not expensive and can be the difference between getting your items replaced or waiting on government assistance that might never come.

What is frustrating is how much our government sends around the world to help others, most to people that hate our guts, yet will not assist our own citizens.

If you can offer assistance please do. The Red Cross and other agencies in the area could sure use any donations you can give. The Southeastern Virginia Foodbank is also in need of food for the upcoming Thankgiving holiday.

We’d intended to have a day trip up to Blakeney Point yesterday, on the north Norfolk coast. I

We’d intended to have a day trip up to Blakeney Point yesterday, on the north Norfolk coast. It’s an area of slightly bleak but beautiful marshland, famous for its bird-life and a sunsets, and a lovely place for a walk. Unfortunately it was pouring when I woke up, and I was as a stiff as a board and in pain, so pretty much my first thought on waking was, ‘We ain’t goin’ nowhere.’ My second thought was, ‘Then again … it is only half-past-five…’

In typical Polly Penguin doing the positive thing fashion I thought, ‘I’m sure if I go to sleep again I’ll be fine when I wake up, and so will the weather.’ I wasn’t. It wasn’t.

But gradually, with some TLC (and perhaps more importantly coffee) from hubby (and some TLC from middle-sized cat too) I started to thaw and bend, and the sun started to come out, so we thought we’d risk it and go.

I’m so glad we did, although our arrival and first few minutes were not auspicious. It’s quite a long drive so we felt the need to avail ourselves of the facilities and then top up on coffee, but although Blakeney is a famous beauty spot it is remarkably unspoiled. This is of course a GOOD THING … until you want coffee and a loo. I remembered seeing a big sign outside the King’s Arms saying ‘Kenco Coffee served here,’ so we trudged down, me still somewhat stiff and pained. There was a girl outside emptying bins who gave us a blank look and then ignored us. I eventually found the door, which didn’t look too inviting, went in and was me by a fellow giving me another blank stare. ‘Are you doing coffees?’ I asked. Blank stare. Then, ‘Nah, we don’t open ’til twelve.’ I pointed out that the big sign outside saying coffee was being served was, in that case a tad misleading. We walked out to the accompaniment of further blank stares.

Things got better after that. We decided to brave the Blakeney Hotel. Nothing outside to say they served coffee – it’s not the kind of place that has notices outside. Far too grand. In fact it’s not the kind of place that a pair of scruffs in walking boots and wellies felt all that comfortable about going in to, but we thought we’d risk it, especially as nobody really goes to Blakeney Point if they aren’t walking boot/wellie brigade. The charming receptionist said yes, they were serving coffees, and where would we like them? We chose the magnificent ’sun lounge’ looking over the marsh to the sea, and had a very enjoyable coffee there before heading off on our walk. Nicely thawed I felt able to tackle a short potter around on the marsh.

We did even have some sunshine! Then hubby said, quite unexpectedly, that he thought he’d treat me to lunch at the hotel! Yum! I’m sure that melon with lemon sorbet and a port syrup, followed by roast pork with all the trimmings and a rhubarb and ginger trifle would not be what the rheumy would recommend, but hey, it was a treat and it was absolutely delicious! Service was very good too on the whole, although there was some confusion regarding post lunch coffee. (Yes, I know, I drank too much coffee yesterday!) We got it in the end though, and it rounded off a lovely meal very nicely. We sat in the Sun Lounge again and watched the rain lashing down outside!

By sheer amazing luck we’d just decided we’d better wend our weary way when out came the sun again, so we didn’t even get wet walking to the car park. Did get this lovely shot of a boat against the stormy sky, with the sun catching it just right.

Then home past a lovely rainbow, and even got to see a barn owl drifting along in a field by the side of the road. One of my favourite birds and always a treat to see.

So a day with a very unpromising start certainly turned out to be full of promise after all. And talking of promise, hubby’s promising me one of his Hubby Special Shepherd’s Pies, so I need to go and eat it. (Although you’d think after yesterday’s lunch I wouldn’t need anything for a week!)-

Tensi tul la aku ngn macik tua nih. Weekend haitu aku b’malas-malasan kat umah 2 hari. Pueh ati tido. Aku b’kurung jek lam bilik. Kwn2 macik tu dtg pon aku wat xtau je. Malas aku nk b’sosial. Tup2 malam tadi, akak endon tu Ym aku, katenye macik tu ngadu2 kat die, bil letrik umah die banyak. Org tua tu xde la kate ape, tapi akak tu rumuskan die nak suh aku tong2 la tu.

Ckp la ngn aku sdri kut ye pon. Ni nk ckp2 blakang pulak. Ngn kawan2 die yg lain tu ntah ape die ngata kat aku ni agaknye. Ade jgk aku dgr die ckp kat phone lam bhs die. Kuat giler babi mcm sngaja nk suh aku dengar la tu konon. Walopon x paham butir bicara, tp aku boleh tangkap mcm die duk ngadu kt kwn die, bla2 TV, bla2 phone..ngadu byk bil nk kene bayar la tuh.

Fine! Aku ckp kat akak tu nati aku top up kan tang letrik tu.

Pagi ni die pegi mane ntah awal2 pagi. Aku pon curik2 tgk bil letrik die. Aku igtkan ade la 3,4 ratus tgk gaye ckp mcm nk pecah umah tu kan. Kat bil tu ade history usage drpd awal tahun. Aku tgk average die pakai lam 280-330kWat gtu. Since aku ade ni, usage btambah ke 360-390kWt. Logik lah tu!!!! B’tmbah sorang yg gune kan. Overall bil die lam 50usd. Aku igtkan drastik bebeno p’tambahannye..Not even double pon!

Aku sakit hati tul la macik ni. Die cilok barang2 aku, aku rilek jek x kecoh2 kat mane2 kawan die pon. Aku geram2 je nk sound, tp kang die hambat aku plak. Huhu. Aku geram sgt sbb die baru je cilok bbrp lagi barang mknanan aku since yg last aku citer tu. Yg t’baru ni aku ade beli sosej. Ade la lam 10 ketul 1 paket tu. Aku goreng dah 2, ade lg 8 la kan. Aku blk sekolah, tgk tinggal 1 jek! Sakit tak hati?? Apple aku pon aku pasan die amik. Igt aku x reti ngira ke? Satu lg, aku beli aluminium foil aku sdri sbb aku suke masak grill2 jek kat cni sbb senang, tinggal jek pastu bole gi mandi ke solat ke ape smtara nk masak. Mggu lepas macik tu ade event ape ntah, buat2 makan kt masjid. Die chef. Aku tgk die cilok aku pye foil tu, yg tak tahan nye, die punye ade tau! Saje je dengki nak amik aku punye! Minyak aku pon die pakai. LAst2 aku amik letak tmpt lain. Awal2 aku dtg dlu kemain ckp kat aku xyh la beli minyak, die dah ade byk. Last2 amik aku pye jgk.

Aku tak sabar nk berambus dari rumah ni. Aku bagi 300 sebulan kat die tu pon dah ckup bagos dah, considering time aku byk kat skul jek. Ngadu kat org mcm la aku ni duk free. Eiii mak tensi ok. Aku ade brangan haitu nati nk balik, nak amik gamba kenang-kenangan ngn die and belikan something as a token. Tp dah macam ni, tak hingggiiin aku eh!

Klu ade student shah pasni nk dtg cni, aku mmg tak rekomen macik nih. Tak tau la kmaznah dlu camne, agaknye sbb die duk sbulan je kot, macik tu x sempat nk tunjuk prangai die. Atopon mmg aku yg teruk. Huhuhu. Sibaik la die ngadu2 time mggu t’akhir nih. Tp agaknye sbb minggu t’akhir la kot die nk pow aku ckup2!

Incik suami, saya nak balikkkk!! Saya tak suke macik tua nih!

Capitalism and Other Kids Stuff (2005)

Saturday 30th January, 2-5pm

This is a thought-provoking education into the world we live in. Nobody ever watches this movie without leaving highly moved and inspired. It explains how the world’s economic system operates in terms of a crazy and very unfair game that children are playing, and so it captures the imagination of its viewers. A fantastic movie to help understand the politics and economics of our global society, with an aim to establishing an alternative society based on meeting needs, on cooperation rather than competition, and on democratic forms of decision-making instead of top-down hierarchies. This is a movie on the forefront of those who wish to save this planet from worsening global warming, incessant wars, and either widespread physical poverty or profound feelings of spiritual poverty despite our rapacious consumerism. Its alternative is a very realizable future ready for the taking, not a hodge-podge dream. A movie not to be missed! Perfect for showing to groups of people, including high school or college students, the politically minded, and pretty much anybody who wants some answers, as a very unique economics lesson that won’t be quickly forgotten!

The Story of Stuff (2007)

Saturday 27th February, 2-5pm DOUBLE BILL

From its extraction through sale, use and disposal, all the stuff in our lives affects communities at home and abroad, yet most of this is hidden from view. The Story of Stuff is a 20-minute, fast-paced, fact-filled look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns. The Story of Stuff exposes the connections between a huge number of environmental and social issues, and calls us together to create a more sustainable and just world. It’ll teach you something, it’ll make you laugh, and it just may change the way you look at all the stuff in your life forever.

Manufacturing Consent (2009)

Saturday 27th February, 2-5pm DOUBLE BILL

Not to be confused with the 1992 film by Noam Chomsky this film by Kapitalism 101 is based around the earlier book with the same name by Michael Burawoy which from first hand experience analyzed the way in which the labor process generates its own consent.

As the economic crises deepens people have begun to question some of their preconceptions about capitalism. But people have questioned capitalism before. What keeps people from radically challenging our economic order? Why do we consent to the rule of capital? Why do we consent to our own exploitation? This video seeks to offer some insights into the origin of this consent.

Like any other economic order capitalism is a system of social relations- social relations between people as they produce things in order to meet their needs and desires. If we understand that economic orders are not magical, that they aren’t endowed with mystical powers or god-given impermanence, but that economies are social relations of our own creation… if we understand that then we have already taken the first step toward figuring out how to change the world.

Zeitgeist III (TBC)

Saturday 27th March, 2-5pm

‘Zeitgeist, The Movie’ and ‘Zeitgeist: Addendum’ were created as Not-for-Profit expressions to communicate what the author felt were highly important social understandings which most humans are generally not aware of. The first film focuses on suppressed historical & modern information about currently dominant social institutions, while also exploring what could be in store for humanity if the power structures at large continue their patterns of self-interest, corruption, and consolidation.

The second film, Zeitgeist: Addendum, attempts to locate the root causes of this pervasive social corruption, while offering a solution. This solution is not based on politics, morality, laws, or any other “establishment” notions of human affairs, but rather on a modern, non-superstitious based understanding of what we are and how we align with nature, to which we are a part. The work advocates a new social system which is updated to present day knowledge, highly influenced by the life long work of Jacque Fresco and The Venus Project.

Crumbling cliffs, be careful near the fence (after you climb over two other fences lined with ads for Samaritans suicide hotlines)

Speaking of getting hammered, along the sea wall promenade there is a nice pub called the Waterside Bar that we retreated into as the tide drove us from the beach. The drinks were very reasonably priced although the food menu seemed a little steep. I felt like a sweet treat so instead of ale I had a pint of Aspall Suffolk Cyder…refreshing.

Kite surfers in the Great Wash...the wind today would take them to Denmark if they wanted

There’s ample seating by the beachside windows and more outside (but the wind was brutal and it was a bit nippy). From here we watched kite surfers, beach combers, and what appeared to be a few people walking along the mud and sand in their finest (although most looked like your typical families of fat people only out for the day because they have to wait for the electricity to be turned back on).

The drinks finished, we decided to make a dash for the car, a mile and a half up the coast but the tide pushed us onto the rocks and it was slow going indeed.

Rising tide, setting sun

It’s finally the week of Thanksgiving…which means decorating for Christmas! For some reason, when I woke up this morning I really wanted to start decorating, but it’ll have to wait ’til at least Tuesday! I feel fairly accomplished, as I made myself stay home last night and work on my first term paper (out of four!!!) due very soon. The past few days I’ve noticed I get more done when I’m watching Christmas movies or listening to holiday music…I think it really does remind me that the semester is soooo very close to being over!

Now I’m getting ready to go to Norfolk for the Grand Illumination parade. Interestingly, I have never been to this parade a single time, even though I have lived in Hampton Roads all my life! I have watched it on TV plenty of times, but I think being there will actually get me pumped for Christmas! It is supposed to be a gorgeous evening, and my boyfriend and I are going to see a few high school friends that I rarely see a little later on tonight. Should be fun!

Looking out of my window, one frosty morn, I happened to glance upon a goat smoking a cigarette. He did this is in such a completely nonchalant manner that it suggested that he knew what he was doing. Rubbing my eyes in disbelief, I pulled on my favourite Scooby Doo t-shirt and pantaloons and blah, blah blah.

Did I really do all that? Of course not. I’d never wear a Scooby Doo t-shirt. I did see a goat smoking a cigarette though. He was called Fred. Fred The Goat. Which is a pretty boring name really. But it was the first thing that sprang to mind when I made it up.

Did I say that I made it up?? Of course I didn’t, it’s his real name. Honest. Actually, I’m not allowed to tell you Fred’s real name as he is part of the Witness Protection Programme. He’s not actually even a goat. He’s a she and she’s a sheep. But don’t tell anyone that I told you.

Did I really tell you? Of course not. You just imagined that I did. The imagination is a very powerful tool. Use it carefully though. There was once a man who imagined that his belly was made of out frogs. It wasn’t, but the mere act of imagining it caused a lake to boil and the ensuing cloud of steam menaced Norfolk for months. The man cried at the misery that he had wrought.

Did he really cry? Yes. Yes he did.

Funny how just a little thing can change how you view the day…Getting out in the garden in dre

Funny how just a little thing can change how you view the day…Getting out in the garden in dressing gown and slippers with the puppy BEFORE the rain starts is always a good start. Higgins hasn’t got the hang of the fact that the more times you make a run for the door without doing what you came out for just prolongs the agony. He is struggling with country life really, too much weather, he should have gone to live with Paris Hilton.

Todays mail was very exciting… firstly, red polka dot cake tins…

So good, I had to do styling…

…and my Spoonflower fabric…

When I first discovered Spoonflower I was too intrigued to go away and come up with a new design, I went for the nearest jpg file, my faithful pink sheep, and like it so much I ordered a fat quarter as a test run. My pink sheep started life on an invitation designed by my son Thomas Taylor for my Graduation party four years ago and was originally wearing a mortar board. I loved her too much to send her off to oblivion, so with the help of Photoshop she hung up her mortar board and joined me here on Planet Penny. I’ve offered to make Thomas a pink sheep bow tie, but strangely, he’s declined…

I was so excited by all this I initially overlooked the fact that my latest copy of ‘Selvedge’ had arrived…Oh. Joy!..

…with this beautiful image on a card inside.

After a wet morning, a band of blue started to spread from the west, and the wind became a breeze, just right for a spot of exercise. I’ve tried to get round the short dog = cold wet tummy problem with a rather smart fleece jumper for Higgins. Apart from the fact that I could have bought myself two fleeces for the cost of a tailor-made miniature dachshund one, getting it on is a bit like putting skin on a sausage. Then you have the problem of persuading him to get out of bed…

We got out there eventually though…

Even the sugar beet looks good in the sunshine, and you can just see home across the field…

All that was left was to make a cake to justify the fact I had bought not just one, but three tins to put cake in. I had some windfall apples, so a quick flip around Google and…Easy Apple Cake? …yes, we like easy. Well, it was easy enough to put together, but who has a 20cm x 30cm tin to hand? And how would the capacity of a tin you haven’t got compare with the one you have got? So, a round cake instead. Fine. But…how does that affect the cooking time? Answer – a lot. After the allotted 40 minutes a gorgeous crispy crust trembled above a completely liquid interior, another twenty minutes, then ten and then another twenty five minutes before the ’sod it’ moment when I got it out and decided that was IT.

And it was.

Delicious…

This was a wonderful warm day for us to go the beach to capture this young couple. We started With the water rushing through the rocks on the edge of the ocean and continued down the beach. I absolutely love the sunset in Virginia Beach and how it makes the sky dance with color. I hope to have many more shoots on the beach this year and would love to take you and your family out to capture the colorful sky. This is not limited to the engaged couple and would be awesome as a family shoot to send out as christmas cards. If you want to schedule an appointment contact us today.

U.S. District Court Judge Eldon E. Fallon, who is overseeing the combined Chinese drywall litigation in New Orleans, said Thursday the first “bellwether” trial will take place Jan. 25 — barely 60 days from now.

In a shift from previous plans, the trial will involve seven Virginia homeowners whose homes were allegedly damaged by tainted drywall produced by Taishan Gypsum Co. Ltd., also known as Shandong Taihe Dongxin Co. Ltd. and Taian Taishan Plasterboard.

Taishan shipped drywall to Florida through Port Everglades and Tampa, and its product also was sent to other states, including Virginia, New York and California. The seven Virginia plaintiffs all used drywall imported by the same distributor, Norfolk-based Venture Supply.
