Spent today tidying up a new course for EduMine.  And listening over and over again to Callas singing Norma—can there possible be a more sublime opera?  I already have five courses on EduMine, that site devoted to self-paced learning on topics in mining.  They are:

   This is a pretty mixed bag of topics.   I am no expert in any of them, but have general knowledge and project specific experience in all of them.

Now I am working on a course that more directly reflects my personal experiences gathered over thirty five years in mining.  It will be an introduction  to the geotechnical engineering of tailings impoundments, waste rock dumps, and heap leach pads.  Stand by!

Here is what I have written on the standard texts on geotechnical engineering.  These are the books and resources you should read if you are a geotechnical engineer in the mining industry, if you seek to manage geotechnical engineers at your mine, or if you are a regulator trying to review a geotechnical report on a mine facility.  Enjoy and appreciate these books as much as I do.  Some you will have to purchase from Amazon; but most you can download for free on the web.  How great a thing it is that these days we almost have no need to pay for knowledge if only we know what to look for and where to look.

  If you elect to read only one book on geotechnical engineering in order to get to the basics, we can do no better than recommend Soil Mechanics in Engineering Practice (Third Edition) by Karl Terzaghi, Ralph B Peck and Gholamreza Mesri.  The original by Terzaghi & Peck was a standard university text book and thus we are partial & prejudice.  Mesri has done a masterful job of updating the original, so it is as fresh and relevant today as it was way back then.  This book has character and insight—unlike so many bland repetitions in so many modern textbooks stuffed with simple problems designed to train students to answer multiple-choice exams.  Rather, this book gives you insight into the nature of geotechnical engineering and the philosophy that is so essential a part of its successful practice.  In our opinion, you cannot call yourself a geotechnical engineer if you have not read and absorbed this book. 

A great companion to Terzaghi and Peck is Soil Mechanics for Unsaturated Soils by D. G. Fredlund and H. Rahardjo.  This book is published by Wiley as is Terzaghi and Peck and is in the same binding.  It is worthy of being the companion volume.   In this volume you will find everything you want about the characterization, analyses, and use of unsaturated soils.  Keep in mind that in many of the drier parts of the world where there are mines, the soil is not saturated, i.e., the pore spaces of the soil are not filled with water as tends to happen in the wetter parts of the world. 

   We are indebted to Bengt Fellenius for making a free electronic copy of his book, The Red Book Basics of Foundation Design and many other papers on soil mechanics and foundation design available to us at this link.   The book includes a superb set of chapters on the basics of soil mechanics that would well augment this course. 

  The great book by Poulis & Davis on stresses in soil and rock masses is available free in electronic format at this link.   Dating from 1974, this book is still a valuable resource for any geotechnical engineer faced with establishing the load and stress distribution in almost any geotechnical situation.  Note that at the website are also many other superb volumes relevant to geotechnical engineering available for free download.

Available in full free for electronic download is the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Reclamation’s Earth Manual.  This book has the practical bent that is needed to design and build earthworks at mines.  Here are the beginner’s guide to the identification and classification of soils, quantifying the index properties of soils and their engineering properties.  Here are the principles of investigation, exploratory methods. Sampling and testing procedures, and how best to record data about soils.  In an extended section on the control of earth construction are chapters of earthworks, foundations, embankments, dams, canals, and soil stabilization.  We have used this book in the field, so have most U.S. geotechnical engineers.  It is readily available to you and should be a key part of your mining-related geotechnical library. 

   The greater part of Rock Slope Engineering by E. Hoek & J.W. Bray is available free on Google books.  In this book are the fundamental principles of rock mechanics and their application to rock slopes.  To the extent the pages are blocked or you cannot purchase a copy, see the website for RocScience where most of the important information is readily downloadable.  Reading this will not make you a rock mechanics expert, but it will make you knowledgeable enough to solve (or at least manage the solution of) most mining-related rock mechanics problems. 

Tailings impoundments are the great mining geotechnical structures.  Still relevant and profound is Planning, Design, and Analysis of Tailings Dams by Steven G. Vick.  As this book is getting a bit out of date, we recommend a Google search of any topic that is critical to the safe and cost-effective operation of your mine.

  For a superb collection of design manuals related to geotechnical engineering go to the NAVFAC site.  Do a search for geotechnical or do a search for soil mechanics.  These searches will bring up eminently usable and proven manuals that detail the design and construction of geotechnical structure.  While originally written for naval facilities (hence NAVFAC) these volumes have gained a well deserved reputation amongst practicing civil engineers working in all areas of geotechnical engineering.  We am certain you will find here what you need. 

The geotechnical engineer is also generally a civil engineer. So go to the site www. icivilengineer. com for information about software, tools, new, and other information that is of interest to the civil and geotechnical engineer and can be used in a mining context.

These days it is almost possible to study geotechnical engineering solely by reference to Wikipedia where there are many insightful postings on all the most significant topics in geotechnical engineering.  Use this resources for it is good and likely to link you to the ever-expanding world of geotechnical engineering for mine wastes that is on and will be on the web.  In this course we provide links to some of the better Wikipedia expositions on geotechnical topics.  Read them to open another window to the wider world of geotechnical engineering on the web.

En un contexto marcado por la crisis, el e-Learning se consolida como una herramienta clave. El e-Learning es un complemento que se hace cada vez más necesario, especialmente en las pymes, empresas que tradicionalmente tienen un menor acceso a la formación, ha subrayado Javier Ferrer Dufol, presidente de la Comisión de Formación de la CEOE durante la conferencia inaugural del Congreso.

La formación online ofrece unas claras ventajas en cuanto a la flexibilidad de horarios, lo que hace posible la compatibilidad de la vida laboral y familiar, y evita desplazamientos con lo que se colabora con el medio ambiente y el ahorro energético.

Según un estudio del Grupo Neteman, el 48% de los usuarios realizan cursos online para profundizar en su formación y el 35% señala como principal ventaja del e-Learning la optimización del tiempo.

APeL reconoce la importancia que ha jugado el Plan Avanza para el desarrollo del sector del e-Learning. Dentro del Plan gubernamental para el desarrollo de la sociedad de la Información ha existido desde su creación un apartado dedicado a la formación (Avanza Formación) a través del que se han formado 1,5 millones de alumnos con cursos online desde el año 2001. La Administración es además de un dinamizador de la formación online, un gran usuario de estas metodologías que se vuelven especialmente útiles en los casos de dispersión geográfica y la formación de colectivos con horarios variables, como ha apuntado la directora del Instituto Asturiano de Administración Pública Adolfo Posada, Beatriz Martínez.

Una norma para garantizar la calidad

El sector del e-Learning mantiene sus perspectivas de crecimiento, pero es consciente de que también necesita hacer esfuerzo de manera interna. Uno de los principales objetivos de APeL es defender los contenidos de calidad “Hay que mejorar desde la industria y apostar por la calidad”, ha defendido Ustaran.

La implantación de la Norma Calidad en formación virtual (UNE66181) es fundamental para garantizar la calidad de los contenidos.

Esta norma, elaborada por AENOR, va a medir tres factores de todos los cursos interactivos: la facilidad del asimilación, la accesibilidad (está preparado para todo tipo de usuarios con o sin discapcidades), y la empleabilidad (en qué medida puede ayudar a incorporarse o mejorar su condición laboral).

Cada uno de estos factores tendrán una calificación visible para los usuarios que irá de una a cinco estrellas.

El objetivo de esta norma es tener “un lenguaje común” que compartan los proveedores de sistemas de e-Learning, apuntaba José Ramón Hilera, profesor titular en el Departamento de Ciencias de la Computación de la Universidad de Alcalá y miembro del grupo de trabajo que ha elaborado la norma.

Normalitatea in orice context uman reprezinta o medie a unui intreg, un punct ce asigura o usurinta de comunicare, cooperare si identificare si o reflexie asupra mediului in sine in care se manifesta un grup, necesitatile implinite si neimplinite ale fiintei umane intr-un spatiu si un moment din timp.
Odata cu migrarea acestui intreg si transformarea acestuia in functie de mediul in care se afla, ceea ce este considerat normal, la fel, se se adapteaza si este adaptat, pentru a intruni necesitatile majoritatii.
Normalul este firescul creat de om si totodata trait de animalul ce-l reprezinta.
Omul in sine, ca ideal, isi schimba identitatea si definitia de la o epoca la alta, de la o zona la alta, chiar de la individ la individ.
Cooperarea si comunicarea sunt necesare omului social pentru a supravietui.
Prioritatile si normele din viata acestuia sunt stabilite de nevoile acestuia.
Ne dorim haos in contextul in care dorim evolutie si un statut. Ne dorim ordine in contextul in care dorim siguranta.
Normele ne docilizeaza si in acelasi timp ne revolta. Le recunoastem ca un firesc in viata noastra, si totusi le respingem absurditatea si inutilitatea pentru persoana proprie.
E normal sa dam noroc, sa dam buna ziua cunoscutilor, sa tinem la aspectul propriu si la visele noastre.
Si cu toate astea ni se pare anormal sa nu ne putem exprima adevaratele opinii in fata autoritatilor din viata noastra, ne deranjeaza sa observam aparenta uniformizare pe strada, care nu ne caracterizeaza. Discriminam si nu vrem sa fim discriminati, deoarece nu putem accepta realitatea existentei tuturor din jurul nostru, care sunt altfel decat noi.
Admiram oamenii cu personalitate, dar doar pe cei pe care ii putem intelege. Detestam oamenii cu un caracter bazat pe alte valori decat ale noastre.
Traim intr-o lume atat de colorata, si totusi tindem sa apreciem doar putinele elemente care ne intereseaza, pentru ca varietatea “buna” din exterior se rezuma la ceea ce necesitam in interior.
Ne simtim luminati ca adoptam noi curente. Si cu toate astea, ele sunt adoptate de majoritate. Ceea ce ne face speciali prin a fi la fel.
Ne simtim avangardisti cand imbracam cea mai noua haina sau asimilam cea mai noua idee… Si cu toate acestea, ideile acestea pot fi calculate, prezise si deduse logic. Tendintele exista… Iar orice tendinta prezentata prea devreme ni se pare o abominatie. Insa la momentul potrivit, tendinta este un lucru minunat, pe care, daca il adoptam, ne hraneste egoul si ne da impresia ca suntem CINEVA, presus CELORLALTI.
Contraculturile si subculturile ingrozesc, deoarece isi situeaza normalitatea proprie departe de limitele normale ale culturii in care se afla.
Si cu toate acestea, in cadrul contraculturii, membrii lor sunt conformisti. Formeaza omogenitate si o identitate colectiva. Poate chiar o omogenitate mai mare decat grupul din care s-au debarasat. Deoarece un grup, cu cat este mai nou, cu atat este mai coerent si uniform, in timp dezbinandu-se entropic, pana la uitare. Ca apoi sa fie reinventat si adaptat nevoilor din alta perioada…

Si ce ne face sa fim Cineva? In ce context? Suntem cineva pentru cei mai apropiati din grupul in care ne aflam. Suntem nimeni, sau doar o statistica in societate.
Suntem cineva in fata viselor pe care le urmam si care ne aduc bucuria de a trai. Suntem nimeni in fata mortii.

Ce este normalitatea? Nimic altceva decat o iluzie, o conventie temporara si dinamica in timp. Ea evolueaza, se schimba odata cu lumea si cu nevoile ei. Limitele ei sunt mai largi sau mai stranse in functie de context. Este punctul de sprijin si de orientare pentru oamenii care se misca permanent, care se schimba permanent, biologic, psihologic, intelectual.

Ce este anormalitatea? Iesirea din acele limite ce permit individului sa fie acceptat si dezirabil in societatea sau grupul in care se afla. Anormalul trece dincolo de limitele acceptate ale normalului, el socheaza, dezgusta si creeaza un sentiment de haos individului. El poate fi inspaimantator, sau demn de dispret. Poate trezi ura si resentimente. Este lucrul pe care oricine ar dori sa-l elimine din existenta si sa-l expulzeze din perceptia sa.

Calitatile acceptate intr-un sistem de valori, daca sunt exacerbate, devin parte a anormalului pentru individul normal, asadar generand un sentiment de respingere.”Geniul” ii va parea omului normal de neinteles, intimidant si ii va crea un dezechilibru interior, care ii va nega necesitatea naturala de a fi valid. Astfel el va deveni opac in fata acestuia, pentru a-si proteja sistemul de valori.

Care sunt limitele normalitatii? Ele nu pot fi definite decat in contexte, intr-un moment din timp. Nu exista un algoritm care sa poata calcula aceste limite in functie de grup. Insa ele pot fi calculate in cadrul aceluiasi grup, ca evolutie. Cum putem realiza dimensiunile acestor limite cand nu ne realizam nici macar propriile limite?

Si ce reprezinta depasirea limitelor altceva decat largirea limitelor intre care se incadreaza normalitatea? A depasi limite duce la anormalitate. A te juca pe marginile limitelor inseamna a-ti manifesta in societate maximul acceptabil si traductibil din propria personalitate, fara sa fii marginalizat pentru transparenta prin care te expui.

In aceasta lumina putem accepta ca limitele normalitatii nu sunt decat o norma sociala, urmare a tendintei de uniformitate intrinseca oricarei forme de organizare umane, norme dictate de segmentul mai numeros al populatiei. De-a lungul istoriei aceste “limite” au suferit o serie de transformari, in functie de contextul psiho-social al diverselor epoci. Astfel sfintii au devenit nebuni, nebunii au devenit oameni de stiinta sau arte, dar fenomenul in sine nu s-a schimbat.

A Record decidiu mexer mais uma vez no programa “Geraldo Brasil”, que costuma ficar em 4º lugar no Ibope. A partir de hoje, a atração será exibida das 15h às 16h30, deixando de enfrentar seus dois maiores concorrentes, o “Programa do Ratinho, do SBT, e o “Brasil Urgente”, da Band. Nos bastidores, comenta-se que é a última chance para Geraldo Luís. Segundo o apresentador, as mudanças são comuns. “A Record não é como a Globo, se o programa não está indo bem, ela mexe para dar uma nova cara. É isso que está acontecendo”, falou ele, referindo-se à série “Norma”, que o canal carioca tirou do ar recentemente por causa da baixa audiência.

Sou regra, não princípio. Comigo não existe ponderação – restrinjo-me à subsunção. Não permito gradação: comigo ou é tudo… ou é nada.

(Ah, hermenêutica! A vida seria tão mais fácil se pudéssemos prever toda a conduta de fato a partir da análise normativa da conduta devida, encaixando aquela atitude factual em um universo de consequências previsíveis… Tudo seria tão mais simples se não fossem necessárias as interpretações. Mas ah! Que graça teria?)

Nel turbinio dei pro e contro della prospettata riforma della Giustizia che dovrebbe portare il processo ad una durata massima di sei anni, si e’ anche inserito il Consiglio Superiore della Magistratura, non nel suo presidente Giorgio Napolitano (per fortuna!) ma con il vicepresidente Nicola Mancino: “finche’ la norma attuale non sara’ modificata, abbiamo il diritto di esprimere un parere anche se non richiesto”; “bisognera’ vedere il fondamento giuridico del processo breve per gli incensurati. Non mi sembra una questione di facile soluzione”.Siamo proprio ridotti male. Povera Italia. La proposta del capo del Governo e’ “ad personam” che’, anche se appare giusta (chi non vorrebbe fissare un tempo massimo per un processo?), nel contesto in cui avviene, dopo la bocciatura costituzionale del cosiddetto lodo Alfano, presenta un marchiato vizio di proponente. Ma quel che piu’ preoccupa e’ l’intervento di Nicola Mancino, rappresentante dell’organo di autogoverno della magistratura, potere esecutivo ufficialmente in conflitto con quello legislativo. Preoccupa perche’ si sta comportando proprio come il Governo, ormai impossessatosi del potere legislativo trasformano le assemblee elettive in ratificatrici delle proprie decisioni. La base della nostra democrazia è la separazione dei poteri. Anzi, lo era. Ovunque il potere ci sia, la mescolanza si manifesta. Nell’Esecutivo e nel Giudiziario. Riforme della Giustizia, con le carceri che strabordano e la violenza che dilaga, le aule intasate con una giustizia civile da incubo, con la levata di scudi contro le sentenze della Corte Europea (vedi crocifisso)… non stiamo piu’ neanche navigando a vista ma siamo alla deriva. E la storia di questo millennio, come invece era in quello passato, non prevede (per fortuna!) neanche l’ipotesi di un qualche nocchiero forte che prenda il timone e conduca meglio verso la bonaccia. Nocchiero che qualcuno crede di essere o vorrebbe diventare, ma i risultati sono questi. Avanti col prossimo tiro Mancino. (Vincenzo Donvito, presidente Aduc)

Apa sih kebenaran itu? Hampir semua manusia rela mati demi mempertahankan apa yang dianggapnya benar. Padahal, benar yang benar-benar benar katanya hanya milik Tuhan. Masalahnya, Tuhan siapa yang benar? Apakah Tuhan-nya kaum beragama A atau umat kepercayaan B?

Tentu saja, masing-masing pihak punya argumen kuat tentang kebenaran yang diyakininya. Tidak ada ukuran pasti dalam kebenaran ini. Yang bisa disepakati hanya nilai-nilai universal. Hal ini telah lama jadi polemik dalam filsafat. Dan kalimat “sepakat untuk tidak sepakat” seperti kerap terdengar di dunia politik saat adanya kemuskilan pengambilan keputusan rasanya jadi jalan tengah paling masuk akal.

Masalahnya, apabila tidak ada kebenaran yang benar-benar benar, bagaimana manusia mampu menjalani hidupnya? Manusia pada akhirnya hanya mampu memilih, kebenaran mana yang lebih diyakininya. Walau dibekali akal, akan tetapi kenyataannya dalam soal pilihan manusia lebih banyak yang menggunakan emosinya.

Di sinilah kemudian fakta bermain. Namun, fakta saja akan kosong tanpa pemaknaan. Pemaknaan inilah yang kemudian berpeluang menjadi manipulasi kebenaran baru. Seperti halnya fakta adanya rekaman percakapan antara Anggodo dengan sejumlah orang yang diduga merupakan rekayasa kriminalisasi terhadap KPK, ternyata bisa diberi pemaknaan baru. Pemaknaan itu mulai dari mempertanyakan keaslian rekaman sampai prosedur penyadapan.

Dalam hal ini, masing-masing pihak yang berseteru menjadi pihak yang paling merasa benar pemaknaannya. Walaupun kebenaran tentunya adalah hal relatif, seharusnya ada tolok ukur bersama tentang norma kebenaran itu. Karena itulah kemudian disusun ilmu berdasarkan azas verifikasi. Karl Popper kemudian juga mengusulkan metode lain untuk menguji suatu kebenaran yaitu melalui falsifikasi. Baik verifikasi maupun falsifikasi keduanya tidaklah menghasilkan kebenaran mutlak, melainkan mendapatkan fakta yang paling sedikit kesalahannya.

Karena itu, aneh apabila dalam hidup manusia lantas merasa paling benar di dunia. Akan tetapi tidak aneh bila seseorang yakin pada kebenaran yang dianutnya. Maka, adagium yang dianut mustinya adalah: “Aku yakin pada kebenaran dalam pendapatku, dengan kemungkinan adanya kesalahan di dalamnya. Sementara sebaliknya aku yakin pendapat orang lain tidak benar, namun bisa jadi ada kebenaran di dalamnya.”

Într-o montare clasică, cu certă încărcătură simbolică – semnată de regizorul Cristian Mihăilescu – spectacolul va prilejui publicului întâlnirea cu o partitură pe cât de dificilă şi spectaculoasă, pe atât de frumoasă şi ofertantă pentru desfăşurări ample de energie muzicală şi scenică.

Momentan opera „Norma” de Bellini poate fi auzită în România doar la Opera din Braşov, ceea ce dă un plus de anvergură acestei seri. Distribuţia îi va reuni pe Diana Croitoru (Franţa), Sorin Lupu (Cluj), Cristina Radu, Dan Popescu şi Mihai Irimia - care vor evolua alături de corul şi orchestra Operei Braşov dirijată de Traian Ichim.
