I remember it so well…sitting excitedly in front of the TV and waiting, until finally the credits started rolling and the theme tune started up…”Robin Hood, Robin Hood, riding through the Glen, Robin Hood, Robin Hood, with his band of men.?/p>

Everyone will recognise that this is the theme tune to the famous 1950’s series of Robin Hood featuring Richard Greene and it was a staple of many children throughout the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s but its also become a favourite of my son (ever since I bought the DVD set) and it was because of his great interest that I recently took him away on a short break to see the real life backdrop to the legend.

So it was, that one sunny morning my son and I drove into Nottingham, checked into the hotel that I had booked for that night, deposited our small amount of luggage and headed out to see the sights.

The first port of call for our short break was, of course, the famous Nottingham Castle. Now the castle is not the medieval building that is always portrayed in every film but a still magnificent edifice dating back to the 17th century. There has actually been a series of fortifications on the site since the norman invasions and every version has had an historic past steeped in military engagements, however, the fondly imagined Sheriff of Nottingham’s medieval version was destroyed in the 1650’s and replaced with the current version. The castle itself though, is a fantastic place for kids on a short break, with rooms of armour and weapons, interactive displays and a medieval style playground. Underneath the castle, a series of extensive caverns and passages await the intrepid explorer and provide adventure and excitement for adult and child alike.

No short break to Nottingham would be complete without a visit to Sherwood Forest though and that was our next destination. Sherwood is now part of the protected Sherwood Country Park and is a thoroughly magnificent 450 acre forest. There are major points of interest within the forest such as the 800 year old ‘Major Oak?and the site of wandering longhorn cattle grazing freely in the forest, but the true wonder lies in the unspoiled natural setting itself. As you go deeper into the forest away from others, you capture a feeling for the ‘spirit of the wildwood?and can easily picture the outlaws of Robin Hood’s times inhabiting these secluded environs.

All in all, I must say that our visit to Nottingham was one of the best short breaks away that I have ever had; my son enjoyed himself immensely and there were a myriad other attractions that I have not yet mentioned. As a top children’s destination, Nottingham rates very highly and likewise, as a short break destination it is hard to beat…why not see for yourself?

If you are looking for a European tourist destination, consider the island of Sicily, a region of southern Italy. Depending on your interests, this beautiful area can be an ideal vacation spot. You can get classic Italian food, and wash it down with fine local wine. And parts of Sicily haven’t yet been discovered by tourists. This article presents Sicily’s capital, Palermo. Companion articles present western Sicily and eastern Sicily.

Palermo is Sicily’s capital and largest city with a population of about 700,000. It was founded in the Eighth Century B. C. by the Phoenicians who wanted to take advantage of its natural harbor. This strategically situated city was conquered again and again. For example, in the past this was a Muslim city with two or three hundred Mosques. The period of the Norman occupation starting in 1072 and lasting for well over one hundred years was considered Palermo’s golden age. The conquests continued almost unabated. Palermo was heavily destroyed during the Second World War. To some extent Palermo is still in the hands of a conqueror, the Mafia.

Start at the Cathedral, built in 1185 on the site of a Byzantine basilica transformed into a mosque by the Saracens in the Ninth Century. Other historic churches that you should see include San Giovanni dei Lebbrosi, San Giovanni degli Eremiti, and the Greek Orthodox church La Martorana. Many churches and other buildings are situated in or near beautiful parks.

The Teatro Massimo (Great Theater) is Italy’s largest opera house. The movie Godfather Part III included a famous scene, violent of course, that occurred on the Teatro’s steps.

The Palazzo Reale was the seat of government for centuries. It is now the home of the Sicilian Parliament. The Palatine Chapel was the royal chapel of the Norman kings of Sicily. Its mosaics are definitely worth seeing. The building and its furnishings are a great combination of Arabic, Byzantine, and Norman styles.

Make sure to see the Salinas Regional Museum of Archeology with its prehistoric cave drawings. Then for a change of pace visit the Museo delle Marionette many of whose marionettes are hundreds of years old.

Finish your tour at the Piazza Pretoria (Pretoria Square). The fountain that dominates the square is decorated with hundreds of sculptures whose lack of clothing led to the name, “Fountain of Shame”. We really suggest that you see this square at night.

Sicily has always adapted foreign foods to come up with Sicilian versions. Put all the foreign influences together and you have the unique Sicilian cuisine. See our companion article I Love Touring Italy – Palermo, Sicily for a sample menu and more information on local wines as well as an in-depth examination of its tourist attractions. Marsala DOC, which was first exported to England well over two hundred years ago, is Sicily’s best-known wine. Most Marsalas are sweet; some are great, others are not.

If you are hankering for a European tourist destination, you should consider the island of Sicily, a region of southern Italy. Depending on your interests, this beautiful area can be an ideal vacation spot. You can get classic Italian food, and wash it down with fine local wine. And parts of Sicily haven’t yet been discovered by tourists. This short article presents western Sicily. A companion article presents eastern Sicily; another presents Sicily’s capital, Palermo.

Monteale is a city of some thirty thousand southwest of Palermo. It is best known for its Norman Cathedral built between 1174 and 1185, arguably the finest example of Norman architecture in all Sicily. Its interior contains well over an acre of gold mosaics.

The town of Erice, population under thirty thousand, sits approximately half a mile above sea level. You’ll love its two castles, Pepoli Castle which dates from Saracen (Arabic) times and Venus Castle which dates from Norman times. Capo San Vito is a cape about twenty five miles (forty kilometers) northeast of Erice. It claims to have the most beautiful beach in all of Italy.

The city of Marsala whose population is approximately eighty thousand, was the major Carthaginian base in Sicily during its wars against Greece and Rome. Today Marsala brings to mind the wine much loved by the British (and others) for well over two hundred years. Make sure to see the Baglio Anselmi Archeological Museum.

We end our tour of western Sicily at Agrigento, historic city and site of Valle dei Templi (Valley of the Temples) arguably the finest Greek ruins outside of Greece. Each temple in the Valle dei Templi is unique. Prepare your trip carefully, summers in this part of the world are very, very hot, and while you don’t want to get sick, you don’t want to rush through the site which contains several buildings worth visiting.

While it hasn’t exactly taken over, organic food has made major inroads in Sicily. Of all Italy’s regions only the neighboring island of Sardinia produces more organic food. Make sure to see our companion article I Love Touring Italy – Western Sicily for a sample menu and more information on Sicilian wines as well as an in-depth examination of the area’s tourist attractions. You may be surprised to learn that only slightly more than fifty percent of Sicilian wine is red. There are many Sicilian wines without the DOC classification, sometimes by choice.

Firstly I would like to say “Ow!” Secondly I would like to say “Ouch!” Third

Firstly I would like to say “Ow!” Secondly I would like to say “Ouch!” Thirdly I would like to do some very offensive swearing. Yes, I had the swine flu vaccination yesterday afternoon and my arm now feels as though elephants have been punching it with their trunks whilst their trunks were curled around enormous tree trunks covered in nails.

There are other side-effects too. My chest is apparently being sat upon by Fatty Arbuckle; my neck has been thrown down a very deep well shaft and is currently trying to crawl its way back up in order to get on with the job of preventing my head from being all floppy; there is a pain behind my left eye which hurts so much I am not entirely sure I haven’t been mistaken for a former king of England and stuck with a Norman arrow; and I feel close to tears over the slightest of things. Obviously I am almost entirely wrapped up in how dreadful I feel and wondering how long these effects will last, but there is a crumb of concern too for the others who were given the shot yesterday.

The letter from the doctor’s surgery said to come in any time between one and six in the afternoon. I thought I would be clever and get there pretty much at one and get it over and done with. Hmm, so clever that I had to join the queue along with some forty or fifty other folk. I have a ‘normal’ flu jab every year and ordinarily there are maybe two or three other people waiting to have their arms stuck with a pin too. The surgery yesterday was standing room only. I did begin to wonder if most of those who arrived after me were either blind or terminably stupid as, despite clearly being able to see that there was lots of standing space within the room, and having seen that there were more and more people arriving after them, many of them came into the room and stood blocking the doorway. Way to go – let’s fray everyone’s nerves that little bit more by causing an obstruction, shall we?

I’m probably being harsh. I know I was nervous – my wife will testify to that as I was in ‘cheeky schoolboy’ mode, the frame of mind in which I tend to act like a nine year old in public rather than the forty-something allegedly grown-up human I actually am. My mood was not helped by the inevitable chorus of frustrated moaning and the odd voice of misinformed doom and gloom: “I don’t even know why I’m bothering,” I heard one chap say to the person sitting next to him, “There’s already a new strain of the virus which is resistant to this vaccine anyway.” I love the way people spout such desperate ‘certainties’ which are in fact entirely apocryphal, don’t you?

Every couple of minutes somebody’s name would flash up on the digital display board, accompanied by the sort of buzz that I previously assumed was a television sound effect. One woman’s name did not trigger a responding walk to the inner door, through which the two over-worked nurses could be found armed with stabby jabby utensils. A minute or so later that name disappeared and was replaced by someone else’s, someone who spotted they’d been called and went on in for their shot. Maybe five minutes after that a woman came through from reception where she’d presumably been chatting to a friend. A large smiley man told the newcomer that she’d missed her name on the board. “No I haven’t,” she replied. “Yes it came up a few minutes ago,” he insisted. “Rubbish, I’ve only just got here,” she said. Mrs Planet then tried to back the smiley man up and repeated the name that had been on the screen. The woman was having none of it. I wonder if she is still sat in the surgery this morning waiting for her name to come up?

When my name was finally called I walked through, rolled up my sleeve, said “Ow,” as quietly as possible, and that was that. It did hurt more than my seasonal jab has ever done but part of me wanted to believe that was because the nurses were working that little bit faster than usual in order to get through everyone, and were possibly a tiny bit less gentle than they could be. For the rest of the day I was a bit sore on that side but not too bad. And then I woke up in the middle of the night, having rolled over onto the jabbed side at some point, and was in agony. My arm was numb, my neck and eye had begun to hurt and that’s when I noticed how tight my chest had become. Which made me panic and thus tighten my chest even more. I could not get comfortable after that and ended up downstairs on the sofa trying to stay as upright as possible as it seemed the only position which eased the aches and pains a little. I intend to spend most of today catching up on the sleep I didn’t really manage to get last night.

And this is where my concern comes in. I am forty-something and obviously not the fittest of folk otherwise I would not need to worry about the swine flu vaccination in the first place. But I am obviously fitter than quite a few of the mostly elderly people who were also having their shot yesterday. So if I am feeling rotten and miserable today, how on earth are those guys feelings? I do hope they have people with them to help get them through the next day or two while their bodies adjust to having this new stuff pumping through their immune system. And I hope they’ve chosen more uplifting reading material to while away the day. I had already begun to read ‘Hard Times’ by Charles Dickens. Well done, Planet Boy, forward thinking there. Oh well, at least it isn’t ‘Love in the Time of Cholera’.

Hi readers. Hope the week is going well. I’m still recovering from the run but my mental state is really good. I’m having an especially elevated runner’s high over the race on Sunday. Partly because of my performance of overcoming obstacles and partly from my running buddies successes. I have asked Melissa and Brenda to write down some of they’re thoughts and experiences from Sunday’s Route 66 Run. Melissa ran her first marathon and Brenda ran 1/2 marathon.

Melissa

Here goes…. the run started off beautifully today. My breathing was good, my legs felt good, etc. I started getting a little nervous when I thought that I was at the 11 mile mark and it was only the 9 mile. I was beginning to get a little fatigued.

Everything continued going smoothly until the usual bathroom demon appeared. It was around mile 13. I went ahead and stopped, and had to wait for what seemed to be quite awhile in the line. So, I started again and then ended up stopping around mile 16. By this time I was really feeling tired and I told Kevin that I pretty much piddled around at this stop. After I had piddled long enough, I started running again.

When I got to mile 20 I heard Kevin yell my name. I ran over to hug him and lost it. Got very emotional. It wasn’t the reaction he was expecting to get from me. So, I had my time and then was ready again. The next couple of miles were rough. I held back tears throughout the run and had a lot of time to talk to God. But, everytime I got emotional I felt the heaviness in my chest and my breathing would become messed up. So, I had to work through a lot of that.

By mile 23 I had it together and knew by this time I could do it. I just told myself it was only a 5K left. At mile 25 a guy who I had yo-yoed with me for the last 6 miles ran up beside me and said “I think we’ve got this” So, I turned up my Jay Z and ran it in with him. Richard ran the last quarter of a mile in with me and elated me to see a familiar face!

Overall, I loved it! Especially now that it is over!

Brenda

I ran the Route 66 marathon yesterday, I have to admit I was very nervous going into it. I didn’t feel I was properly trained for the hills in Tulsa, so I was expecting a not so great time. I woke up very early that morning and ate my usual peanut butter and banana. Melissa, Glen, and I all hung out with our families at the start line. I was very worried that I would be disappointed in my time and that I would not be able to run those hills like I wanted too.

Well, the gun went off and off we all went. The first mile was entirely uphill but good thing I had ran that exact street at the Tulsa run so I knew exactly what I was getting into. At that time, I was running about 10 min 30 sec mile. I loved that the marathon had clocks at every mile so you could pace yourself. Anyways, I ran at a constant speed which I never do. I usually speed up and then slow down and then speed up again but yesterday my legs were going consistently.

As I hit the 10K mark, I saw Richard, my boys, my mom, and Allona cheering me on. By this point I knew I was running a good race and that the hills had not taken the best of me. By the time I got to the 10K mark I had ran 1:01 10K which was my best time ever. I was stoked!!!! And of course screaming to Richard that this was my best time yet!

After I saw my family, I knew that I wanted to beat my time from last year and my time from the NM half marathon. I ran pretty consistent up to mile 11 where I saw my family again. I screamed to them that I only had two more miles to go. I really wanted to pick up the pace at this point but my body was not having it, I slowed down just a little but I was still keeping a good pace considering I had just ran 11 miles at a pace I have never ran before. I knew once I hit 31st street, where the turn around point was that I was almost there. I tried to pick up the pace as much as my body would allow at this time.
Once I got past the 21st street bridge and I could see the start of the finish line and I looked at my watch, I knew I had beat my NM half marathon time and shaved off a lot of time off last year’s Route 66 time. As I approached the finish line, I saw and heard Richard screaming for me because he knew that this was my best half marathon to date. I was so excited that I conquered the hills and they didn’t take me down and I beat last year’s time by 19 minutes. This is so huge for me because I am not a fast runner but I am slowly making strides and getting better race by race. My next race will be White Rock in Dallas. I don’t know if I will do better because this last time was something I never thought I could accomplish but I thank God that I am able to run and that I have a family who supports me every step of the way. I also have developed some great friendships through this journey and I hope to have them in my life always. Happy Running!!!!

This weekend made it back down to Dallas and started doing some apartment shopping. Ended up finding a GREAT place called The Marquis at Waterview it’s gorgeous and totally my style. Ended up putting my application in on it today so here’s hoping all goes well. If so, I’ll be calling Texas home come the first weekend of January! I’m soooo excited, I’ve really missed living there… not that Norman isn’t great and all, but it’s just no Dallas. After apartment shopping was finished ended up doing some actual shopping. Hit up my long lost friend, Northpark, and found some great stuff! Hope your weekend went well! It was a really crazy day today and I’m just glad it’s behind me. Looking forward to some R&R with the family this week for Thanksgiving.

Less than 2 days away from the Route 66 Marathon. Here’ goes my checklist.

Haircut

Shave

IPOD Loaded and Recharged (main song..Estasy of Gold)

Garmin Fully Charged

Race Shirt Selected

Jelly Beans Bought

Carb Meal #1

Continuously Drinking Water

Now all I have to do is run 26.2 miles on Sunday. The weather appears to be nice on Sunday. I hope it stays cloudy and cool instead of clear and sunny. Wind should not be a factor. Am I nervous? Yes. I’ve trained hard but I am still trying to shake off a physical struggle leftover from the OKC Memorial Marathon. After I ran that race, I was in a “Zombie” state for several days. Definitely do not want to repeat that.

Anyway, I am super reflective tonight. I am so blessed to have wonderful family and friends. I get to witness another close friend finish her first marathon. How awesome is that? Awesome!!! I am so proud of my running friends/friends. Running truly is a wonderful sport that I enjoy. Including when i run 26.2.

This will be my first repeat race since i’ve been running just over a year ago. On a side note, I have registered for Dallas White Rock Marathon. That gives me three weeks recovery after Route 66.

Will this be my last post before the Marathon? Who knows, I have a lot to say right now. Will take tons of pictures throughout the weekend.

In just a few days I will be using my kicks on Route 66. It’s been quite a journey to get to

In just a few days I will be using my kicks on Route 66. It’s been quite a journey to get to this point once again. One of the most rewarding aspects about a marathon besides finishing it is the process by which one gets into marathon shape. This level of running can only be maintained over a short period of time for most individuals during a year time span.

This will be my second time running Route 66. This training period has been quite different for me. I’ve looked at it as an experiment. This time around I have stuck with the training schedule and did some cross training. Unfortunately the weather switched on me and I haven’t been able to cross train as much. In the past, my training consisted of running massive amounts of mileage over the course of one week. However, this time i’ve spaced my runs out and focused on rest as well as intensity.

So on Sunday we will see if the experiment works. I am going into the race with two goals. The first goal is to finish the race. The second goal is a particular time. I will not reveal that time because I do not want to set myself up for failure. If I simply achieve the first goal, I will consider the race a success. Don’t worry I will reveal the time on a blog post after the race.

I’m especially excited about this race because once again I have a good friend running her first marathon. It is such a big accomplishment to run such a long race. Heck, just getting to the starting line is monumental. Training and preparation takes a minimum of 16 weeks. How many people stick with anything for 16 weeks? So, needless to say, I will be anticipating her finish of the race.

As usual, the week leading up to the race has taken an emotional angle. I get much more reflective and more appreciative of things. My dreams become more realistic and I start visualizing parts of the race. Mainly the finishing of the race. Marathon running is such a battle. People ask why do I run such a distance? I usually tell them that I enjoy the battle. The battle not with other runners but the battle with self. I thrive on putting my body in a situation (race) that requires my mind to overcome the urges of giving up or walking. Every marathon that I have run so far, I have some point in the race where i’m wondering “why I am doing these”. Also, every marathon that I have run, I have went into survival mode where i’m simply placing one foot in front of the other. Not even focusing on speed.

Interestingly, my training has allowed me to start thinking more along the lines of strategies. For instance, I have been running a medium pace for about 8 miles before picking up my speed for the next 8 to 10 miles. I am hoping for a similar scenario on Sunday. My biggest concern is the last 6.2 miles. I would love to have something left in me to finish the last miles with some level of control pace rather than survival pace.

Okay, I can tell that i’m all over the place tonight with my blog. I do apologize.

Last night I went to the OKC LandRunner meeting and I heard an older more experience runner tell the group one of his many mottos…

Reach for your limits or they will come to you. How true is that? Marathons takes you to a limit few things can do. I am so thankful for many aspects in my life and running enhances many of these aspects.

Goodnight.

It didn’t seem the sort of thing a mother ought to feel, but Bianca was acutely aware of the jealousy swelling within her as her infant daughter monopolized Albany’s attention. As pleasing as she found the scene–the baby and the father, together–she could not deny that selfish wish that he might take his eyes off of Katherina for a minute or two and look at her instead.

But perhaps this was natural. Perhaps men were always so enraptured by the sight of their children–she had little enough experience with men and with children to know for sure. She vaguely wondered if he had been like this with his children with his wife.

“She’s a jewel,” Albany declared as he gently bounced the girl in his arms. “I daresay she’ll be just as pretty as her mother.”

A warm blush crept onto Bianca’s face. “Much prettier, I’m sure.”

“I would agree if I didn’t think it impossible. Now, my love, come hither.”

Never before had she heard the word ‘hither’ spoken aloud. It had always seemed a term of which only the tongues of fairytale princes were worthy, but Albany’s voice did it such justice; perhaps she could only conclude that he himself was a fairytale prince.

“Yes?” Her own voice paled in comparison. Once again, she wondered what such a magnificent man could see in a simple girl such as herself.

Smiling, he handed her the baby, then met her gaze with his emerald eyes. “I want to see my two favorite girls together.”

Somewhat awkwardly, she posed Katherina so that the girl stared into her father’s face, the corners of her little mouth turning into her shy grin. “Perfect!” exclaimed Albany, returning Katherina’s smile. “My angels–beautiful apart, and even moreso together.”

Truly, he was something out of her dreams. Bianca had always been a shy, plain, talentless girl who had never attracted the eye of anyone and after a her youth seemed to be over, she had given up hope. Then, she had met Albany. He treated her like a princess; she worshiped him like a god. Her father had always told her that the men of the Elite were nothing but a bunch of scoundrels who only ever thought achieve their ends through violence and their wallets, but Albany had proven him wrong. Maybe the others were like that, but not he–he was her knight in shining armor.

“I do hope she grows to take after you,” he told her, glancing down at the baby one last time, “though if anyone can make my ugly old features look young and lovely, then surely it is she.”

“I think you wear them just fine yourself,” ventured Bianca, surprised at her own daring; very rarely could she bring herself to speak a full sentence to him.

His brow twitched; perhaps she should have kept her silence. “Put the baby down, Bianca, then join me on the sofa.”

Shrugging, she did as she was told–who was she to argue with such a man? After lowering Katherina into the crib, she kissed the baby’s forehead, watched those wide brown eyes flicker shut, then made her way to the sofa. As always, she wasn’t sure whether he would rather have her snuggled up to him or on the far end, giving him his space; she settled for a safe middle ground. “Thank you… uh, for coming today, I mean.”

“My pleasure,” he assured her. “Anyway, Bianca, love… I’ve been thinking. Seeing Katherina today–how perfect she is–well…”

Bianca’s heart fluttered against his ribcage. “Yes?”

“Well… maybe we should give her a little sibling.”

On that note, if anyone in Norman is looking for a house to buy/rent let me know because I need to get rid of mine lol, also if anyone has any suggetions for living accomidations on the north side of Dallas (or just North of the city up by Richardson) please let me know ! Anywho, back on track, maybe it’s because I’ve been on a major “black” jag recently, who knows, but love this designer. Here’s some of my favorites from the sale yesterday! Hope you’re having a great one!

Greetings reader. Today I ran the 12K Race for Hope http://www.okbtf.org/ . The morning started out pretty much on time. It was a beautiful morning until……the wind started blowing and the temperatures dropped. Fog and mist soon followed the winds. The beautiful morning was gone and replaced by a cold, dreary morning. Interestingly, moments earlier Jason had mentioned how beautiful the morning was. Don’t get me wrong, the day was not Beacon-like (Beacon Run from last year).

So me and the gals stayed in the car until the last minute, quickly warmed up and headed on down the road at the starting gun.

Staying Warm

The race started off smoothly. The 5K runners were flying down the path and the 12K runners were a little slower. Melissa ended up running with me and we played with our pace most of the way. We did pick the pace up a few times just to make sure it was still there. We finished about 1:13:00 which isn’t bad for me on a 12K. Brenda was not far behind.

The best part of the day was hanging out after the race and talking with other runners. Enjoy getting to know other people and hear they’re stories. I am surrounded by such great and wonderful runners/people.

Did get to see Amber this morning. Some of you may remember Amber from a few weeks ago when I posted about the Kelsey Briggs 5K run. She is spearheading planning for next years run. Anyway, she arrived to the race late and pretty much ran from driver side seat to start line. I can’t tease her too hard because she is coming from a decent distance to run. I did get a pic of her leaving the scene.

Amber Leaving the Race

One major thing missing today were her gold shoes. Perhaps that is the reason she was running behind. She had some story about those shoes getting caught on mouse trap paper.

I did snap another picture because it was too good not to. Melissa was cold after the race. I looked at her and could see that her lips were blue. Really blue. I took the picture but the picture does not do justice to how they really looked.

So there you have it. The Race for the Cure. I will post more pictures when they become available. I will be posting a lot because I have lots on my mind this week as I head into Route 66 marathon. I tend to get reflective as the big race gets closer. Be sure to check the blog out Sunday night to see if I made it.

You can go in the Volcano Room once you buy the Amulet. There’s not much in it…

New Stage Play is Here

The new play, Norman Swarm has been Transformed, is here.

To get in the SECRET ROOM, stand on the X’s with a few other penguins. One of them must have the bug costume on! Then you can get the hidden Crystal Pin inside the secret room by standing on the X’s there! Again, there has to be a bug there too.

I’m not much of a Top 40 hits person, but it was fun shooting from a different perspective.

Also, I somehow managed to get into the show with VIP passes when security was turning people away from the capacity show.

Let me know what you think of this kind of video.

Oh wow! My favourite musician, Andrew Bird is working on a soundtrack! That’s definitely going

Oh wow! My favourite musician, Andrew Bird is working on a soundtrack! That’s definitely going to be my favourite soundtrack EVER!

But let’s start at the beginning.
Chicago based, multi-instrumentalist, melodymaster and very handsome person Andrew Bird is working on a variety of projects, including a soundtrack.

Mr. Bird released ‘Noble Beast’ earlier this year and that album was actually pretty succesful (reaching nr. 12 in American charts). He has revealed that he’s currently working on three different projects, at least that’s what he told BBC 6Music. He claimed that he is attempting to finish the soundtrack to a forthcoming film named ‘Norman’, it’s a high school dramedy. ‘It could do quite well,’ he told 6 Music News. ‘It’s got a fairly well known cast and it’s really well written and everything. It is more of a drama, it tackles high school drama without being lame. This is the first legitimate full length film that I did. I had the monitor of the film in the studio and I’m playing. It’s a lot of work. I don’t know if I ever want to do it again.’

He also revealed that he’s working on a set of new songs, including one named ‘Lusitania’ after a stricken passenger ship. ‘I’m using different naval incidents that drew the US into conflict, like the sinking of the maine and the Lusitania is a metaphor for a wounded relationship or something,’ he explained. ‘It actually really works, but it took my like four or five years.’

Mr. Bird has also recorded a cover of the Kermit the Frog favorite ‘It’s Not Easy Being Green’(but not in french this time) for the upcoming tribute album Muppets Revisited. The album also features Weezer doing ‘Rainbow Connection’. And rumours say also My Morning Jacket tackle ‘Our World’ as well.

Also Andrew Bird added that he have been working in collaboration with a sculptor on a variety of new instruments. ‘I’ve been collaborating with this sculptor in Chicago who makes these horns that I play through – they are like speakers – to create a whole installation, a room full of these horns that are shaped like poppies, making loops that come out of different horns. It’s like an arboretum of sonic sculptures. It’ll be a travelling museum show. It’s just getting started,’ he said. (But that was actually quite old news.)

I hope he’s playing ‘Lusitania’ sunday!
(forgive me for this crappy YouTube version of the song, but this one has the best sound quality)

A major disadvantage of running for me is the waking up early. I’m just not a morning person. Running is one of the few activities where i’ll give up sleep to do. An advantage of running beyond the health and mental aspects is getting to watch the sun rise in the east. Fall has really had some beautiful and peaceful sunrises. Just wanted to share that.

Made it over to Brenda’s house on time at 6:20.

As you can tell by the car clock in the picture, Brenda was running behind. Do not want to make a big deal out of this, just wanted to visually document the occurrence to better get underneath her skin on the matter.

Had the person I was waiting on had been Richard (her husband), he would have been on time. I’m just saying….

Anyway, made it to the race. The atmosphere was pretty festive. There were lots of college students involved with the race. Seeing younger people take an active role in such events is encouraging to see.

The race started with a bang. Literally, a sound of a shotgun. Off the runners went. My main goal was to finish the 5K and to not get hurt. As of this typing, I think I achieved my goal. I started off pretty slow for the first 3K until I gradually worked at a higher speed to finish the race.

There were lots of volunteers such as cheerleaders that kept us entertained and cheered the runners on. The course was pretty fast with several downhill sections. The final stretch of the course was uphill.

I ended up crossing the finish line around 26:02? This was off from my best but it was interesting to see that I ran a close time whether I start slow and finish strong or start fast and die out.

The only draw back of the race was the only water stop was after the 3K mark. However, the goodie back given to the runners before the race was really good. Overall, a pleasant morning to run the race. The race coordinators did a great job of creating a wonderful environment to race. Especially enjoyed talking with other runners after the race.

I will be racing at Overholser next week. Its one time around the entire lake. It’ll be fun since it’s the very last training run before Route 66 marathon.

The Sun was not cooperating with the camera but you do see Brenda running by and finishing strong.

The video below is of a new running buddy that we met named Michelle. Not sure if she’ll ever get to see this video because I didn’t get to tell her where to check online but you never know. She is from the Norman area.

There you have it. Race for Hope is next week followed by my big race in Tulsa (Route 66). Special shout out to Michael Coffman for showing up today and running just under a 20 minute 5K. Sure wish you’d dedicate to training because you could be good.
