I’ll start this off by saying that the investigation is ongoing, as is each region here – I haven’t, for example, been to Lake Berryessa, a glaring omission – but I’ve tried real hard to find things to do up here that are interesting, and as of yet have come up with a very, very short list. Here we go…

The St. Helena skatepark is one of the best regarded in the Bay, designed by a great firm.

It’s pretty.

And if you like wine, well, this is your country for sure.

I’ve done multiple trips up to Napa and Eastern Sonoma counties, and while I enjoy any road trip just for the mission’s sake, I have been disappointed multiple times. Hell, Grassroutes guides, whose Oakland guide is excellent and has a great franchise that I seriously enjoy overall, couldn’t convince me IN AN ENTIRE BOOK that I wanted to go back.

But the truth is, I will be back. Because regardless of the general feel of the place, there HAS to be cool shit to do here. I believe in Wine Country. More or less.

I’m sure most people would think this photo was taken in the country somewhere…but what is on the other side of the red roof buildings is Lakeshore Drive, a busy road in North Bay…there are many areas along Lake Nipissing that look like this…this was taken from Sunset Park looking east…while the bay is open there is a very thing layer of ice on the water…

I know this is a rather simple photo of pussy willows, but I have to say this was a huge surprise to me…the tree had to be 8 or 9 feet tall…very scraggly with only the buds you see in this photo…I didn’t know they grew that tall…

anyone who visited in the winter time saw my post regarding the snowmobile “drag races”, well this is what is left of the drag race track…you can still see the banks on either side, showing the location of the track…

I visit a number of photography blogs and every now and then I’m inspired to try something different with the processing of the photos. I’m limited to some extent with the programs I have, Photoscape, and Picasa…I also have gimp but I’ve not taken the time to get into it. recently I”ve seen a few blogs who are using some form of HDR effect, which I rather like so I checked Picasa and it has a setting called HDR-ish…so I gave it a try with a couple of my photos…if you’ve been visiting for awhile you will know I’ve a thing for gnarly, naked trees…the waterfront on Lake Nipissing offers a few great ones due to the very high winds blowing regularly in the area…below is the original photo.

below I’ve used the HDR-ish setting…

of course this one is a simple black and white…more dramatic…

this one is black & white with HDR-ish used…

So, a year ago, my teacher announces an open call audition for background for a movie being shot in North Bay where they want lots of skinny people. It was a Laurence Fishburne movie and that was all we knew. I went. I didn’t get it, but my roommate got a role as background, as one of the Ferals. It was in the back of our minds for a year. Last night, The Colony directed by Jeff Renfroe opened in North Bay, Canada. It was the world premiere. There was an exhibition at the Galaxy Cinema courtesy of the Canadian Forces Museum of Aerospace Defense. They were selling water bottles and the label was made of seeds, so that you could plant the label and something would grow. It was neat.

There were opening remarks made by Mayor Al MacDonald, mayor of North Bay, Colonel Conrad Namiesiowksi, 22 Wing Commander in North Bay, and Paul Barkin, producer of The Colony.

The we watched the movie. I won’t spoil it except to point out a unique feature in the setting. It was shot in the old N.O.R.A.D. underground complex located in North Bay about 600 feet underground. The old first line of defense against the Soviets was used to shoot this post-apocalyptic Ice Age movie. It was weirdly spooky to see Cold War facilities used for this purpose.

One more thing. One of the themes in it was that people under extreme conditions will destroy themselves and each other. In a post-apocalyptic ice age, there is a risk that the extreme cold, the starvation and the hardship will strip away your humanity. Some movies, like Resident Evil, take this theme and then make the characters superhuman, almost by default as movie builds on movie. Makes a great movie but the action is not so believable of humans as we know them. The Colony kept the action on a very human level, instead of being big and flashy. Again, spooky, because it felt like if anyone was put in that situation, that is how they would behave, with cruelty and savagery. It gets scarier the more you think about it and those shadows linger.

Awesome Canadian film. Yeah, when did you ever think you would hear that?
