20 years ago today the massive Blizzard of 1993 or The Storm of the Century dumped 12-24 inches of snow all across Alabama, North Georgia, and all along the Eastern Seaboard. Many people were warned about the upcoming storm but no one was prepared for the strength of this storm! After the snow started falling it became heavier and the wind howled! Many people lost power and all of us experienced thundersnow. By the time it was over on Saturday, many people had lots of snow. Here is the official snowfall totals from the blizzard.

I was around back in 1993 living in Dadeville, AL. The area got around 4-6 inches of snow. And being a young kid, I thought this was a happy moment! The area never lost power and I had a great time playing in the snow! Of course, I was unaware of the people suffering in North Alabama since I was a young kid. And we even had to go back to school on Monday! For people who can’t believe that everything shuts down when it snows in Alabama. It does! Alabama does not have the equipment to handle heavy snow and many trees break easily causing power outages. People in Alabama are not used to this kind of snow! I wanted to share some of the best videos I have found from people online! Let’s hope we never see something like this again!

Georgia has an interesting northern border. In 1796, Congress decreed that the border between Georgia and Tennessee/North Carolina would be set at the 35th parallel. Two surveys were done to mark Georgia’s northern borders. The first survey, in 1818, was commissioned to mark the border between Georgia and Tennessee, starting at Georgia’s northwest corner. A second survey, in 1819, was commissioned to mark the border between Georgia and North Carolina, starting at Georgia’s northeast corner. Marking an west-east line sounds easy on paper, but remember, these surveyors were using 19th century technology to draw the border. There was no electricity, no GPS or any other fancy equipment to tell you if your were really facing due east or west. Combined with the fact that the team was using faulty equipment and outdated maps, there was bound to be some screw ups.

The first survey was wrong off the bat, as the crew marked the northwestern corner of Georgia about a mile south of the 35th parallel. In addition, the crew surveyed a little too east, accidentally surveying points in North Carolina when they were supposed to end at the GA/NC/TN tripoint. The 1819 survey was arguably a little better, in that they at least correctly marked Georgia’s the northeast corner right at 35th parallel. However, the crew messed up going west, accidentally veering south a little, though not south enough to meet the boundary set by the 1818 survey. The results of these mistakes were Montgomery’s Corner and the 30 Mile Post. From the 30 Mile Post to Montgomery’s Corner, the North Carolina and Georgia border runs in a north-south direction for about 2000 feet to connect the borders set by the two surveys. Yes, there are parts of Georgia that are east of North Carolina. To get a sense of how much the surveying crews messed up, here is a map of the north Georgia border relative to the 35th parallel. But all of these errors seems inconsequential, right? I mean, what harm could a bunch of bumbling 19th century surveyors do today?

30 Mile Post and Montgomery’s Corner

Georgia’s northwest corner relative to the 35th parallel (orange line)

Now let me talk about something a little more serious. Since around 2007, northern Georgia has been mired in a massive drought. Federally prohibited from taking more water from Lake Lanier, Georgia needed to look somewhere else for water. Let’s take a look at that map of Georgia’s northwestern corner again. You see what major geological feature that orange line is going through? That’s right, the mighty Tennessee river.

And it wasn’t just surveyors that took note of this error. In 2008, the Georgia General Assembly passed a resolution demanding that the US Supreme change the border to match the 35th parallel. It fact, five years later, the General Assembly is still trying to lobby the federal government into changing the border. Here is an interactive map to show some of the border changes the Georgia legislature has proposed. To summarize, in 2008, the legislature wanted to annex all of Tennessee’s land below the 35th parallel. In addition to gaining access to the Tennessee river, this strip of land would have also included a large chuck of southern Chattanooga. Being how Georgia has sales taxes and Tennessee doesn’t, it would have meant about 40,000 disgruntled residents being forced to pay new taxes. Not surprisingly, negotiations between the Georgia and Tennessee didn’t go so well. In fact, one Tennessee lawmaker actually suggested sending militias down to the border. In 2013, Georgia proposed annexing a 1.5 mile strip of sparsely populated land as a compromise. As of this writing, nothing has come to light yet of that proposal.

So, if you’re an north Georgia resident grumbling about being unable to water your lawn because of the various watering restrictions, you can thank a group of confused 19th century surveyors for your agony. I mean, it’s not like the rapid growth in metro Atlanta’s population has anything to do with the water shortages.

9. Saxon v. Saxon, 207 Ga. App. 471, 428 S.E.2d 376 (1993).

The father petitioned for a change of custody arguing that the mother was unfit to have custody because she was in a meretricious relationship and because she had attempted to “poison the mind” of the parties’ child against the father. The father alleged that the mother showed the child the pleadings in the custody case and discussed the details of the case with the child in an attempt to alienate the child from the father. The mother stated that she showed the child the pleadings “to allay his concents about the proceedings.” 207 Ga. App. at 472. The trial coutt found that the wife’s actions rendered her unfit to have custody.

The Georgia Court of Appeals found that the trial court could properly reject the wife’s explanation for discussing the case with the child. However, the court found that the wife’s actions did not render her unfit. “[Tjhere is no evidence mat the mother's discussion of the case with the child amounted to abuse of, neglect of, or inability to care for the child." Id. The court of appeals then reversed the trial court's custody decision and ordered that custody remain with the mother in keeping with the preference of the child, who was 15 years old at the time.

10. Chandler v. Chandler, 261 Ga. 598, 409 S.E.2d 203 (1991).

The father successfully petitioned for a transfer of custody of the parties' child after the mother had removed the child from Georgia without notice and denied the father visitation, asserting that she was protecting the child from sexual abuse. In addition to transferring custody, the trial court severely limited the mother's visitation lights, only allowing her visitation in accordance with the written agreement of the parties. This limitation was imposed based on the trial court's concern that the mother may attempt to abduct the child.

The Georgia Supreme Court affirmed the transfer of custody but found that the trial court abused its discretion by entering an order that effectively terminated the mother's right to visit with the child. The court remanded the case so that appropriate visitation rights could be awarded to the mother, holding that "[ljess extreme arrangements, including limited and supervised visitation, could be instituted to satisfy the trial court's concerns that [the mother] might abduct the child if granted visitation.” 261 Ga. at 599.

11. Arp v. Hammonds, 200 Ga. App. 715, 409 S.E.2d275 (1991).

The mother successfully petitioned for a change of custody based on the father’s interference with her visitation rights. The mother testified regarding the father’s actions including that the father induced her to sign a separation agreement giving him custody by promising to remain in the marital home, that he failed to keep her apprised of school and religious functions, that he would hang up the telephone while the mother was talking to the children and would not allow them to call her back for days, and that he refused to allow the mother to exercise all of her summer visitation with the children as provided in the parties’ agreement. The trial court found that the mother had established that a material change of circumstances existed and granted her petition

In a 5 to 4 decision, the Georgia Court of Appeals affirmed the transfer of custody. The court concluded that the father’s refusal to allow summertime and telephonic visitation was sufficient to authorize a change in custody. Furthermore, the court found that the father’s pattern of violating the terms of the divorce decree would also justify a change in custody. The court summarized the evidence that supported the trial court’s decision to transfer custody to the mother as follows:

Based on the evidence, the trial judge could draw the reasonable inference that the types of behavior exhibited by the father towards the mother, which in large measure were contemptuous of court authority, and his negative attitude and overt antipathy towards the girls’ relationship with her, demonstrated by his repeated insulation of them from contact with her, adversely affected their natural relationship with their mother because of his influence on them. This could be deemed harmful to the young daughters, aged five and seven at the time of the order appealed from. He could also draw the reasonable inference that the father’s repeated interference with the mother’s participation in child -rearing, disserved their welfare. These support the conclusion that it was not in the little girls’ best interest to remain in this environment.

200 Ga. App. at 718.

12. Hyman v. Moldovan, 166 Ga. App. 891, 305 S.E.2d 648 (1983).

The Georgia Court of Appeals affirmed the dismissal of the father’s suit for alienation of affections for failing to state a claim. The father brought suit against the mother, her current husband, and her parents for conspiracy to commit the tort of alienation of affections, alleging that these parties had conspired to alienate the affections of his child. The court found that any such claim was abrogated by OCGA 51-1-17, which abolished the tort of alienation of affections. The court rejected the father’s position that this statute applied only to the alienation of a spouse’s affections.

13. Bull v. Bull, 243 Ga. 72, 252 S.E.2d 494 (1979).

The mother, who was awarded custody of the parties’ child, refused to comply with the divorce decree’s grant of visitation to the father. Under the terms of the decree, the father was entitled to have the child for two weeks during the summer. The trial court entered an order requiring the mother to surrender the child to the father for his summer visitation; however, neither the mother nor child could be located. Eight days later, the trial court ordered that custody be transferred from the mother to the father. The mother was subsequently held in contempt for refusing to comply with both orders.

The trial court’s decision to transfer custody to the father was affirmed by the Georgia Supreme Court. The court found that the transfer was justified because of the mother’s refusal to allow the father to exercise his visitation rights. The court held that “[fjhere is sufficient evidence in the record of the repeated denial of the non-custodial parent’s visitation rights to authorize a change of custody.” 243 Ga. at 72.

After seeing the doctor, she wants to try some crazy injections under my patella, to relieve pain and possibly regenerate some cartilage in the knee. The strange/funny thing about these injections is they are chicken cartilage.

My classmates in school were a bit cruel calling me,”chicken legs”. I grew to take the teasing and learned to ignore them. The ironic thing in this story is, after all that teasing, I’m actually going to have chicken parts in my knees.

To be totally honest, in school, I was so scrawny and my legs were so thin; especially around the ankles, I truly looked like I had chicken legs. I’ll admit it.

I sent our Pastor an email tonight to explain our absence. I told him about the doctors suggestions. His response is below. I love our church. The Pastor and everyone there are just great. They have made Barry, Mom and I feel welcome since the day we walked in the front door. Just a wonderful place.

There’s a barn nearby that I’ve affectionately called Red Stripe over the years after the Jamaican beer of the same name. It could be the dead of winter but driving by and catching sight of the metal roof’s single painted red line out of the corner of my eye brings me back to island time, calypso music and an icy Jamaican brew. The sunset was exceptionally fierce the other evening so I thought I’d try to capture the warmth and wrap it around me like a thick blanket. Is it me or does the sun sink at hyper speed during the cold months?

This week’s WordPress photo challenge is Lost in the Details. I decided to follow the advice of guest blogger, Christopher Martin and place the camera at a low angle. I used Camera+ and the Lone Star effect to give the scene the feel of the prairie in the picture below. I loved everything about it but the freezing temps I had to endure wandering around in only a sweater. Jamaica here I come…

I like the homey transition from story to a personal moment, and thought I’d try it here. I’ve linked her name to a favorite post, “Books and Real People,” which I think you will enjoy.

Try adding 12 oz of Red Stripe beer to the number one googled beer bread recipe in the world. No kidding. But make sure you sift the flour, I heard this is key to a delicious and hearty bread. Gently mix 3 cups of sifted flour, 3 teaspoons baking powder, 1 teaspoon salt (omit bp and salt if using self-rising flour) 1/4 cup of sugar, with a 12 oz can of Red Stripe or other beer. Pour into a greased loaf pan, drizzle 1/4 cup of melted butter over mixture and bake 1 hour in an oven heated to 375 degrees. Remove from pan and cool for at least 15 minutes. You can dress up this bread by adding your choice of cheese or herbs to the mix. Delish when eaten with hot soup.

Usually by this time of year, the weather is warming up and it already feels like spring. That was definitely not the case this weekend. We had friends come visit from Pennsylvania hoping to escape the cold but it just wasn’t happening this weekend. But, instead of complaining about the cold weather, we decided to go out and enjoy it. I mean, we used to live up north where the weather was cold this time of year so it wasn’t anything new for us. As we drove up to north Georgia, we started to see snow topped mountains and realized that our hike would end up being a snow adventure!

I was reluctant at first to make us hike in the cold and snow but our friends soon reminded me that they live in much colder weather and this would be just like their other hikes. We decided to hike blood mountain, one of the hikes we did last summer, and it was amazing to see how different the views were with all of the snow.

We all enjoyed the views and honestly I think I enjoyed this snow covered hike much more than our summer hike here last year. I really wish that we could have taken Sura but she is still recovering from her paw injury (a story for another time). She would have loved the snow! Although I am not a huge fan of snow and moved to a warmer climate for a reason, it is nice to sit and watch the snow flurries and admire the white dusted mountain tops (at least for a day).
