The northern suburbs of our lovely city are known for the eclectic mix of people it attracts. It’s not unusual to see a scrangly looking, dreadlocked hippy sipping a latte merely meters from a group of elderly greek gentlemen enjoying their daily espresso. After living here for just under 2 years, I’ve sampled some of the best (and worst) coffees on offer in the Northcote/Thornbury area and I thought my huge amount of idle holiday time would be a good time to start writing about it. I work at a cafe on High st, and while I won’t name which one, I’ll include it in one of the writeups over the coming weeks.

Northern Soul 843 high st Thornbury

Expect a well prepared, moorish brew. Toby’s Estate Fair Trade Organic blend is used; a smooth-tasting, fruity affair. Atmosphere is relaxed and the staff are friendly. A personal favourite. For a full review click here

Foxy Brown 31 South Crescent Northcote

A relatively new cafe tucked away close to Dennis station. With their primary focus being quality coffee I had high expectations when I ventured there for the first time. The blend they use has been painstakingly created by owner Patrick Sloane in conjunction with Master Roaster Joshua Bailey and I must say the effort has definitely paid off. The individual components of the blend are also available (at different times I’m lead to believe) to be tried both in store and as beans to take home. From my experience these fell pretty flat in comparison to their blend, the single estate from New Guinea (Delorusa from memory~ will check when I go in next) I tasted was fairly salty and uncomplex. It was simply dwarfed by the awesomeness that is their in-house blend.

The passion for the product is pretty clear from the outset. The first two pages of the menu are dedicated to the coffee available in house and to take home (as whole beans); precluding any mention of food whatsoever!

My only qualm with the place was the service (or lack-thereof) in our initial first few trips. Several items of our order were either wrong (no I didn’t order a long black for the second time) or simply failed to appear. While I appreciate the laid back atttiude, if you can’t remember a tables order please write it down! They offer a fantastic product, and I’m confident once the teething problems are ironed out the service will match the self proclaimed “best brown in town”

Pictures and further writeups to come over the coming days

My apologies for the lateness on part three people. I originally wanted it to run Friday, but got a last minute call to DJ at the Ace Hotel in NYC for an after party for Pop Up Flea and Tanner Goods. Better late than never. Shout out to Mark and Sam from Tanner Goods, Connie from 503 Stylus, and to Astrud the staff at the Ace for digging the music of Funk and Soul 45’s all night long. Let’s talk about some music and FMF last night in London.

When my friend Andy asked if I wanted to check out his night wit the legendary Keb Darge at Madame Jo Jo’s my last night in London, I jumped at the chance. I had been a fan of Keb since I discovered his Legendary Deep Funk records on BBE in the 90’s. Let’s just say, had it not been Keb’s putting out these records, there may have not been a Flea Market Funk. Yes, I still would have been a DJ, but it was Keb, Josh Davis, producers like Pete Rock and Premier, and even my friend Andy who pushed me to find these types of records even more here in America. So here we are over ten years later and I’m in London. I had heard about (but never been to) Keb’s Deep Funk Friday nights, but it was Andy a few years ago that told me about Lost and Found. On this night, he and Keb spin Rockabilly, early American R & B, Jump Blues, and Northern Soul. I was a bit puzzled, because this kind of stuff wouldn’t go over here on a weekly basis. A one off yes, but weekly would be a challenge. Lost and Found has been going STRONG every week for three years. This I had to see for myself.

Madame Jo Jo’s is a dimly lit, well decorated, burlesque type hall. It honestly looks like it hasn’t changed since the 60’s (why change something that works?). In a little while, it’s sunken in dance floor (little did I know), would be packed with young people dancing their ass off to my surprise, 50’s R & B. I arrived early with Andy, and met Keb and his wife Edith. Soon after the crowd began to filter in. As I was trying to keep up with Keb with Maker’s and Cokes, the crowd grew larger and larger. Before I knew it, the night was in full swing. Keb and Andy went from obscure Jump Blues to Ray Charles to Elvis (Jailhouse Rock?!) to Northern Soul Classics as the crowd of twenty somethings and people who traveled from as far as Manchester to appreciate the night, dance like they were at the Wigan Casino, and just enjoy the best Saturday night spot in London. If this is any indication where the music scene is going, we’re in for a shake up. From a guy who reinvented Northern Soul, invented the Rare Groove and Funk scene, and now has this night going, my money is going to Ladbroke’s on this scene. I want to thank Andy and Keb for inviting me out and showing me a great time. Here are some photos from the night:

Hello FMF Family. Here’s some treats from London once again. This time it’s a good one. In fact, I wasn’t even aware it was going to happen, and I’m glad it worked out the way it did. While we were digging, Andy mentioned he had a gig at Colourful Radio. It’s been a while since I had my radio show, and honestly I do miss it. So, that being said, we headed over to Vauxhall in South London to the Studio. We went a bit early, because there was a killer Reggae show on before, Papa Face was filling in for the normal DJ who was out. He also had Soul Warrior (Big Youth’s cousin!) in the studio as well. They were playing the best Reggae, so it was an honor just to sit in on the show, and take in some of these great Reggae tunes. By the time Andy started his show, I was flying high, and in the second hour of Boogie, Northern Soul, Jump Blues and Reggae, we both played a bunch of the records we had dug up that day. Below is the MP3 version of the show.

You can hear Andy Smith every Wednesday Night at 12 Midnight (that’s 7PM for you EST people here in the US) on Colourful Radio or DAB in London , and look for the live streaming link or link to Andy’s page. This is highly recommended by FMF, and not because the guy is my friend. There are some great shows with music you don’t hear, and Wednesday nights you get a double shot! On Friday I will revisit my night at Lost and Found with Andy and the legendary Keb Darge. See you then. Keep Diggin’!

Kulturen frodas än i dag.

* * * * *

* * * * *

Keep On Burning. Keep The Faith. Keep On Keeping On.

Right On!« broderat över knogen.

* * * * *

»Wigan Casino All Nighter — Come and Get Those Memories«, »Keep the Faith«, »Keep on Burning«, »The London 6T:s & Northern Soul Society«, »East Anglian Soul Club — Right On« och »The Torch — Keep on Keeping On«.

Elvis Costello spelade in Chris Clarks klassiska »From Head to Toe« och gav ut den som singel. Och de spelade in flera Northern Soul-klassiker — Chuck Woods »7 Days Too Long«, Cliff Nobles »The Horse«, The Drifters »One Way Love« och Jimmy Johnson & The Bandwagons »Breaking Down the Walls of Heartache«. Flera DJ:s beskyllde dessutom Kevin Rowland för att ha stulit melodin till »Come on Eileen« från en obskyr Northern-raritet.

The Jam baserade »Trans Global Express«, från »The Gift«, på The World Columns »So Is the Sun«. Hade The Style Councils »Solid Bond in Your Heart« kommit tio år tidigare hade den automatiskt klassats som Northern Soul.

Kylie gjorde Chairmen Of The Boards »Give Me Just a Little More Time« och Sinitta fick Robert Knights »Everlasting Love«.

Tom och Ed från The Chemical Brothers avslutar numera alltid sina spelningar med Jeff Perrys hymnlika »Love Don’t Come No Stronger (Yours and Mine)«.

NORTHERN SOUL-SINGLAR

AV ANDRES LOKKO

MAJOR LANCE

»You Don’t Want Me No More« [Okeh]

»Ain’t No Soul«, »Investigate« och »Since I Lost My Baby’s Love« är alla nästan lika fantastiska som »You Don’t Want Me No More«. At the Torch« i Stoke-On-Trent. (»You Don’t Want Me No More« finns på »Okeh — A Northern Soul Obsession« [Kent]. De övriga av Major Lance bästa inspelningar för Okeh finns på »Everybody Loves a Good Time — the Best of Major Lance« [Epic/import].)

FRANK WILSON

»Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)« [Motown]

Där hittar man Barbara Randolphs »I Got a Feeling«, The Elgins »Heaven Must Have Sent You«, Kim Westons »Helpless« och Tammi Terrells »This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak For You)«, låtar som alla platsar på min personliga lista över de tjugo bästa singlar som över huvud taget spelats in.

GLORIA JONES

»Tainted Love« (Champion)

JACKIE WILSON

»(I Get the) Sweetest Feeling« [Brunswick]

»Soul Galore«, »Higher & Higher», »The Who Who Song« och »Because of You« är några andra av hans omistliga sånger. (Finns på »The Very Best of Jackie Wilson« [Music Club] ).

CHAIRMEN OF THE BOARD

»Give Me Just a Little More Time« [Inaictus]

Jag hade lika gärna kunnat välja »Everything’s Tuesday« eller »(You’ve Got Me) Dangling on a String«.

(»Landslide« finns på »Sweeter As the Days Go By« [Charly]. »Right Track« finns på »It’s Okeh Up North« [Soul Supply].)

CHUCK WOOD

»7 Days Too Long« [Roulette]

(»7 Days Too Long« finns på »Out on the Floor« [Goldmine].)

DEAN PARRISH

»I’m on My Way« [Laurie]

Jimmy Radcliffes långsamma »Long After Tonight Is All Over« är den ena av de två låtar som alltid sätter punkt för en perfekt Northern Soul all-nighter. »I’m on My Way« är den andra. Och den bästa. (Finns på »The Wigan Casino Story« [Goldmine].)

SANDY WYNNS

»A Touch of Venus« [Champion]

Sandy Wynns blev senare sångerska i The Honey Cone och under sitt riktiga namn Edna Wright spelade hon i mitten av sjuttiotalet in »Oops! Here I Go Again« som numera är en eftertraktad rare groove. »A Touch of Venus« är knepig att få tag på, men leta efter den magnifika LP:n »Out on the Floor«, utgiven på Inferno i början av åttiotalet, som fortfarande är den bästa Northern Soul-samlingen av alla.

WILLIAMS & WATSON

»Too Late« [Okeh]

När Larry Williams och Johnny Watson i sista raden av refrängen i den här Okeh-klassikern vrålar »keep on keeping on« i ett rasande tempo hjular hela dansgolvet. Duon, som var för sig är mer kända i helt andra sammanhang, spelade också in »A Quitter Never Wins«, även den klassisk, stompig Northern Soul. (Finns på »It’s Okeh Up North« [Soul Supply].)

JEFF PERRY

»Love Don’t Come No Stronger« (Yours and Mine) [Arista]

WORLD COLUMN

»So Is the Sun« [capitol]

EDDIE PARKER

»Love You Baby« [Askford]

ELOISE LAWS

»Love Factory« [Music Merchant]

MAXINE BROWN

»One in a Million« [Scepter]

& THE SHIRELLES

»Last Minute Miracle« [Scepter]

BOBBY PARIS

»I Walked Away« [Capitol]

JOHN EDWADS

»Tin Man« [Kent]

10 Things You Don’t Know About Attraction According to Cosmo

There are some surprising — and kinda crazy — factors that come into play when choosing a mate or even just a hookup. Like his belly button and the color of your clothing. Intrigued? Read on…

Your Nose Should Be Part of Foreplay

The blend of lavender and pumpkin turns guys on. But, you don’t have to bake a pie and douse yourself in lavender oil. You can create the combination by lighting two candles or spraying these scents on your neck. Oh, and tell your guy to spritz on a cologne with hints of cucumbers or black licorice, since those smells were found to arouse women. As you will see from my “About Me” page…Lavender makes me wretch…Next !!

Guys Find Women in This Color More Desirable

A chick in red is more likely to be asked on a date and have more money spent on her. It’s because men are influenced by cultural symbols — like Valentine’s Day — that associate the color with romance, and primal instincts that link the color with sex. Maybe that’s why the butts of some animals turn red when they are ready to mate. Therefore men prefer women with red butts ????

Cocktail Goggles Are for Real

When we’re drunk, guys look cuter because we don’t notice the asymmetry of their face. The biological explanation: A symmetric guy is less likely to have genetic defects and makes a better mate. There ya go girls..Im cute when im drunk…the slurred words are obviously an added attraction

Men Do This When They’re into Someone

A man will subconsciously position his belly button toward the woman in the room he is most attracted to — even if he’s speaking with someone else. (Suss out your competition by checking out which women are pointing their belly buttons at him, since the rule applies to chicks as well!) And just below the belly button is ?????…cmon…its not rocket science

It’s All About Timing

One week you might be craving that beefy guy at the gym, but the next week you have the hots for the slender guy next door. This could be because ovulating women prefer men with masculine features, who would make the strongest, healthiest children. Meanwhile, menstruating women want men with softer, more feminine looks who seem kinder and more cooperative.Good god….so confusing

Stress Equals Sexual Attraction

A guy in a high-anxiety or stressful situation is more likely to take a chance on you. Researchers set out to see how adrenaline and risk played into attraction by putting a woman on both a shaky and stable bridge. The study found that men who crossed the unstable bridge were more likely to ask out the same woman afterward than those men who crossed a steady bridge. It’s because conditions of high stimulation heighten sexual attraction. My god…..I MUST be sexy….no comments please!!

Size (of His Gut) Matters

You can tell a lot about a guy’s sex drive and fertility before he even drops trousers. Men with broad shoulders and a solid chest have a lesser health risk, making them better mates. Meanwhile, guys with a gut have lower levels of testosterone. Low testosterone leads to a lower sex drive and lower fertility…..Thats it !!!…Salad for me !!

A Sign It Could Be Long-Term Love

If you and your guy’s mom look alike, there’s a good chance it’ll work out between you two. Guys are more likely to pair up with women whose bone structure is similar to their own mothers. It’s called “sexual imprinting,” and suggests that the faces we find appealing as adults are determined in childhood.Men fancy their Mums?????..Wrong Wrong Wrong!!!

The 5/15 Rule

If a dude touches you 5 times in 15 minutes, you are totally in. A man will find excuses to put his hands on you to see how you respond. He might touch your arm, tuck a piece of hair behind your ear, or play with your necklace. If you tighten up and freeze, he’ll know to back off. So grabbing your butt is a good sign ladies

This Move Means He’s Smitten

When a guy mirrors your moves, he’s subconsciously telling you he’s interested in you. Sitting the same way as you, doing the same hand motions, and leaning his head in the same direction are all subtle cues that he’s attracted. And if he licks his lips after you lick yours, it’s a definite sign of desire. So I have tocross my legs at a sideways angle, play with my hair and lick my own lips…REALLY….she will just think im a nutter

Well…I have learnt an awful lot…get drunk, Act like a girl, grab her butt, act stressed, tell her she looks like my mother (Who BTW is 89) and point my tackle in her direction…How could I possibly fail ????

I have a feeling Patricia may regret sending me this excellent advice

Todays Funny

I Want these towels …Just in case the above tips fail me

It seems the whole point of The Motown re-release series Cellarful of Motown is to make Brenda Hollo

It seems the whole point of The Motown re-release series Cellarful of Motown is to make Brenda Holloway a cult goddess…

Each volume (3 of which over this decade have been released) has at least 1 gem from this woman that apparently never closed her mouth and stopped singing from her days as a teen recording for DelPhi records in LA in the early 1960s, to her letter of resignation to Berry Gordy in frustration in 1968.

Basically it seems between 1964 and 1967 she recorded just as much as The Supremes ( who, still have somewhere in the range of 100 or songs still unreleased). But while The Supremes released 10LPs and numerous hits in that same period, if Brenda was recording just as much… she only had 3 top 40 hits and One LP in the same period of time…

So… flash forward 40 years… and rabid Motown fans can’t wait for more little morsels of rarity…. and we harass the poor woman to perform songs she barely remembers cutting at the age of 18 around the same time Samantha gave birth to Tabitha on Bewitched

My Favorites include the epic dense “Crying Time” (sounding like one big tidal wave of tears that never washes ashore) the dance the heartaches away “You’re Walking Out With My Heart” and the advice song of not being like those other heffas that chase after that hot guy on “Make Him Come To You” (alright, it’s totally the opposite of the sentiment of another song as a gay man I’ve appropriated that I mentioned earlier…. “Wishin’ & Hopin’” but a dude’s gotta work all the angles til something catches right?).

It seems not to be over…. I by a whim typed “unreleased Motown” and I listened through a youtube video post…. imagine how I melted when I heard a 1965ish recording with Smokey Robinsonish clever lyrics called “After All You’ve Done”

The hunt begins… the wait becomes more torturous… until I have a little bit more of Miss Holloway’s gold in my collection… delighting me for years to come.

Thanks for stopping by! We at Record Relics strongly believe that vinyl records make the world a better place and we’d like to share some with you that we find interesting…

“POT LIQUOR”
http://recordrelics.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=3398152
(With a band name like Pot Liquor, it doesn’t really matter if your music’s good or not…but in this case the band’s actually pretty decent!)

“T. REX – MARC BOLAN”
http://recordrelics.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=3283077
(Arguably T. Rex is either the BEGINNING or the END of the Glam genre, deoending on your point of view)

“SEX PISTOLS PICTURE DISC”
http://recordrelics.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=2138276
(Picture discs were big in the eighties and so were the Pistols, so cool combo here)

“THELONIOUS MONK”
http://recordrelics.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=2005129
(Take time to thank the record companies for re-issuing some of the old Jazz classics. This sealed LP is an exact re-issue of Monk’s “Criss Cross” album from the days of yore)

“INDY 500 RACING”
http://recordrelics.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=1506144
(Amazingy this album was originally given away as a promotional record by the VanCamp’s Pork And Beans company as an incentive to buy their canned food! Nowadays it’s a cool piece of NASCAR racing memorabilia, and has great art on the cover)

Greetings all.
I write this sitting at the dining room table, looking out the window as my sworn enemies – fall leaves – drop to the ground. I am currently under attack by some kind of sinus problem, which makes the thought of taking the leaf blower and the rake out of my shed all the more painful.
However, there is something to celebrate, an occasion so momentous, so earth shatteringly earth shattering as to wipe away any and all afflictions by virtue of its world shaking stupendousness.
That’s right, the Funky16Corners blog is five years old.
It was the first week of November 2004 when I first stepped blindly into the blog-o-mosphere, spilling the contents of my fevered brain onto the interwebs via my computer keyboard. Back in the day, I had no earthly idea that I would still be at it five long years later. If you are son inclined, and you take a bracing dip in the Funky16Corners pre-WordPress archive, you’ll also see that in the beginning, I didn’t really have a clear idea of what I was going to do with the blog.
The general concept is there, i.e. to ruminate on and inform about music, but as you’ll see the musical direction didn’t really take shape until the second month of the blog’s existence. There were traces of the Funky16Corners you know and love, but there was also a bunch of stuff that presaged the whole Iron Leg experience as well. You can go back to that first month and watch me as the divergent musical avenues of my mind do battle for supremacy.
That is now – as they say – a moot point. As I mentioned, a few years later I started Iron Leg to write about 60s pop/psych/garage etc, whittling down my free time even further. But by that time, “free time” itself was an outmoded concept as the whole blogging thing evolved from a pleasant diversion into something else entirely (still pleasant…).
If you’ve been a regular reader of either blog you’ll already know that my move into blogging wasn’t really new, in that I’d been writing about music, first in fanzines, then in newspapers, and ultimately on the interwebs for something like 25 years. What the internet allowed me to do was take a familiar format and give it new, multimedia dimensions.
When I started doing zines back in 84/85, it was all cut and paste with the rubber cement, plundering old books and magazines for artwork (or drawing it myself) and heading down to the old copy shop for duplication. From there, it was on to maybe 10 record stores – locally and in NYC – for hand-to-hand distribution and the dreaded consignment. Believe it or not, even then, via travelers picking up copies and the zine getting written up in other zines, international contact (in a decidedly more limited form) was made.
When the internet came along I took the opportunity (along with the most rudimentary HTML “skills”) and started zine-ing on the web. Out of that effort was born the Funky16Corners web zine, which grew over the course of four years to include a lot of long form articles/discographies and tons of shorter, capsule reviews.
The time came midway through 2004 that planning and executing the long-form web zine was starting to feel like a chore. My first son had arrived and my ability to expend the time and energy that it took to put a new issue together was dwindling rapidly.
I began to take a look at the blogging format, and it’s brevity and quick turnover appealed to me. I made the decision to change direction, concentrating more on single records. Within a couple of months things settled into something like the current format, where they stayed for another two years until the inception of the Funky16Corners Radio podcast in May of 2006. It was at that point that I started to put mixes on the web (god knows I’d been making them since I was first able to operate a cassette recorder), an enterprise that grew in diversity and sophistication to the point where the Funky16Corners Radio Podcast and Guest Mix archives now hold close to one hundred different mixes (as well as almost 30 more over at Iron Leg).
When I look back on those early days of paper-blogging, and see how many people now check in to the blog from all over the world, it genuinely blows my mind. We truly live in McLuhan’s global village, and at least in this circumstance I see it as a good thing. Soul and funk fans from all points of the compass gathering to share information and (more importantly) their love for the music.
There are those among you for whom a lot of the music posted here is new, and of course many dyed in the wool soulies for whom much of it is old (yet wonderful) news. If the Funky16Corners blog has a “mission”, it is bringing those two ends of the spectrum closer together, united by a love and respect for the music and the people that made it.
To mark the fifth anniversary of the blog, this week will see two more entries to that list with the fifth and sixth mixes of soul/funk/jazz covers of Beatles songs.
The Beatles were my first musical love. The first record I ever bought with my own money was a copy of the VeeJay LP ‘Introducing the Beatles’, and their music still stays with me as an important part of my life. When I put the first Beatles covers mixes together back in 2007, I hadn’t planned any sequals. However, as time went on I started making it a habit to record and put aside any Beatles covers that I found, and eventually all of the ensuing mixes came together.

The first mix this week will be more upbeat, the second (posted on Wednesday) a much mellower exercise for those late night, meditative listening sessions.
I won’t go into much detail on either mix, aside from noting that both of them have contributions from lots of old favorites as well as some unusual stuff.
I would like to thank everyone who has been a part of the ongoing Funky16Corners blog-sperience, including all the regular readers, my fellow bloggers and DJs (big ups to DJ Prestige and the Asbury Park 45 Sessions Crew and DJ Birdman in DC!) and especially those of you that have participated in the yearly fund drive that helps to keep this thing going (especially the Podcast Archive, by far the most heavily trafficked part of the site).
With any luck we’ll all be here for another five years (or longer), unless there’s another paradigm shift in the technology that takes us in another direction entirely.
I hope you dig the mixes and I’ll be back next week with more of the stuff you love.

Greetings all.
The Funky16Corners Halloween thing continues today with a heavy slice of Chicago soul from the man Johnny Sayles.
This record (my copy of which sailed over from the UK courtesy of my man Tony C) is one that has been mentioned here previously, but never posted (on account of I didn’t have a copy).
The previous mention was in relation to a past Funky16Corners Halloween post of the late Clea Bradford’s song of the same title. When I first wrote about that record I knew that the Sayles ‘My Love’s a Monster’ existed, but could not figure out whether or not it was in fact the same song (which it is not).
Sometime between then and when Tony sent me the record I heard it on YouTube and started drooling immediately.
Johnny Sayles, born in Texas but transplanted to the Windy City started recording in the late 50s (one of his first records was with Ike Turner) and waxed his first record under his own name a few years later. Between 1963 and 1972 he recorded a grip of hot records for a variety of Chitown labels including Mar-V-Lus, Chitown, St Lawrence, Chess, Dakar and Brunswick.
‘My Love’s a Monster’, released in 1965 on Chitown is a storming Monk Higgins production with a gritty vocal by Sayles. It bears all the marks of prime, mid-60s Chicago soul and the choed handclaps alone are worth the price of admission.
If the hardcore soulful goodness wasn’t enough for you, you also get the spooky “BUM BUM BUM BUM BUMMMMMM!!!!” riff several times in the song moving it to the top of the list for any All Hallows Eve soul throwdown.
I’ve also reposted the Clea Bradford number to remind you how groovy that one is too.

I’ll be back on Monday for the beginning of the Funky16Corners Fifth Anniversary Celebration.

Peace

Greetings all.
I hope the middle of the week finds you all well.
I almost wasn’t going to do a post today, as I am up to my ass in the proverbial alligators, but I managed to get the little Corners off to dreamland in a timely manner, so I sit here, typing, digi-ma-tizing some vinyl and being otherwise productive.
The tunes I bring you today are both sides of a mid-60s (I’m guessing) Los Angeles area 45 by a singer named Faye Ross. Aside from the fact that Ms. Ross recorded at least one other 45 for the Trevor label, I have been able to discover nothing about her.
The a-side ‘Faith Hope and Trust’ is a great Northern Soul-ish banger, the flip a nicely produced, bluesy torch song.
Naturally, as is always the case, when I can’t turn up anything on a performer, I start digging into the other info on the label to see what I can find.
As the label itself goes, Round Records was probably based in the vicinity of Los Angeles, California. I’ve found a couple of direct and indirect connections to the LA-based Kris label, but aside from the three Round 45s I own, by Jimmie Preacher Ellis, BW Souls and Faye Ross, little else.
‘Faith Hope and Trust’ was written by Kent Harris. Harris was born in Oklahoma and moved west in the 50s. Under the name Boogaloo and His Gallant Crew he recorded the 45 ‘Clothesline’ b/w ‘Cops and Robbers’ in 1956. Both sides of that record would be redone (and apparently unfairly appropriated) as big R&B hits, first as ‘Cops and Robbers’ by Bo Diddley, and in 1960 the Coasters retitled ‘Clothesline’ as ‘Shopping for Clothes’ (originally credited to Leiber and Stoller, but later shows up with Harris’ name in the credits).
Harris went on to marry and work extensively with LA soul diva Ty Karim, writing and producing many of her records through the 60s.
As I said, I haven’t been able to find any info on Faye Ross. She had a great voice, and the sound of ‘You Ain’t Right’ suggests to me that she was as comfortable singing the blues as she was with straight-ahead soul.
It’s a cool record, and if any of you have anything to add, please drop me a line.

Peace

Greetings all.
I write to you as I recuperate from yet another – hopefully the last – encounter with kidney stone related surgery. My intrepid urologist (there’s a phrase you don’t hear too often) located and blasted the remaining stones, and if all goes as planned I won’t have to go back the hospital anytime soon (this was my fifth trip this year, only two of which were planned).
Fortunately the body parts required for operation of the Funky16Corners blog – listening ears and typing fingers – appear to functioning properly, so we plow ahead.
The tune I bring you today is something I was turned on to in the early days of the Asbury Park 45 Sessions.
Back then, the AP45 crew had a distinctly different composition than it does today. One of the early DJs, who left the fold after only a few appearances was Garden State Soul’s own Jay Boxcar. Like another ex-AP45er, Connie T. Empress, Jay brought a more classic/Northern soul vibe to his sets. When he dropped the tune I bring you today I took a run up to the turntables and was pleasantly surprised to discover that the high quality tune I was hearing was no stone rarity, but rather a neglected b-side by Jay and the Techniques.
A multi-racial soul band, Jay and the Techniques hailed from Allentown, PA, and had their first and biggest hit ‘Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie’ in 1967. The tune I bring you today was the b-side of their second hit, ‘Keep the Ball Rollin’.
‘Here We Go Again’ is a storming dancer with a pounding organ/horn riff and a wonderful vocal by Jay Proctor. Produced and arranged by Philly legends Jerry Ross and Joe Renzetti ‘Here We Go Again’ is a departure from Jay and the Techniques ‘nursery rhyme’ tunes and is a wonderful slice of pop-inflected soul. The grooviest thing of all is that you ought to be able to pick up your own copy at the next flea market/boot sale for less than a dollar.
I hope you dig the tune and I’ll be back on Wednesday with something cool.

Peace

Larry
