Crash of Airliner Blamed on Lightning; 37 Killed

Take Bodies From Wreckage of Northwest Airlines Ship In Ravine Near Winona, Minnesota

WINONA, Minn., Aug. 30.–(AP)–A human chain will wind its way down the steep and rocky side of a 150 foot ravine today to bring out the mangled bodies of 26 persons trapped in the wrecked fuselage of a Northwest Airlines plane.

The bodies of 10 others were carried out last night.

The 36 persons died as the storm raked airliner crashed atop a wooded Mississippi river bluff near here late yesterday and toppled into the ravine. None were from the Pacific Northwest.

The crash occurred between Winona and Fountain City, Wis., on the Wisconsin side of the river during the height of a severe electrical and rain storm.

The plane was one of the airline’s newer Martin 2-0-2 ships and was bound for Minneapolis from Chicago with 33 passengers and three crew members.

It left Chicago at 3:50 p. m. and although due in Minneapolis at 5:30 p. m. apparently was behind schedule because of the storm.

NWA’s Twin Cities headquarters said its last message from the plane was received at 5 p. m. and read, “am descending through heavy overcast.” The plane then was at 7,000 feet and in the vicinity of La Cross, Wis., about 30 miles from the crash scene.

A crash witness told the coroner he saw the plane fall into the ravine on Sutters ridge after lightning shattered a wing. A NWA pilot who was among the first to reach the crash scene said he thought the ship had been struck by lightning.

Howard Rackow, a farmer living on Perry Island in the Mississippi river, told the coroner he was getting some stock out of the storm when the plane passed over.

“I was in the yard with my mother,” he said. “There was a flash of lightning. It struck the plane. A part of a wing fell off and the ship started down.”

Mrs. Charles Guenther, a Fountain City farm woman, told a similar story. She and her husband saw the crash from their automobile.

The body of Capt. Robert Johnson, 30, St. Paul, the pilot, was still in the smashed nose of the plane.

The crash was the worst in NWA’s history. Thirty persons died when one of the line’s Orient planes smashed into the side of an Alaskan mountain last March 30.

Less than two months ago, NWA was given a National Safety Council award for having flown more than a billion miles without an accident.

Airliner Bound For Minneapolis Runs Into Cliff

NWA Pilot Living Near Scene Believes Lightning Struck Craft, Causing It to Break Up in Air

WINONA, Minn., Aug. 29 (AP)–Thirty-six persons were killed Sunday when a Northwest Airlines passenger plane crashed into a 500-foot Mississippi river bluff during a severe storm.

Walter Haeussinger, Winona police dispatcher, said the 33 passengers and three crew members were dead.

Captain Jack Volkel, a NWA pilot who lives in Winona, and who was one of the first at the scene of the crash, said he thought lightning had struck the plane. He said it appeared the plane had broken up in the air.

The plane, a Martin 2-0-2, had left Chicago at 5:50 p. m. (Pittsburgh time) and was due in Minneapolis at 7:30 p. m.

The crash occurred on Sutters Ridge, between Winona and Fountain City, Wis., on the Wisconsin side of the Mississippi river.

Parts of the wreckage were found in swamplands along the river. A few bits also landed in a ball park at Winona, seven miles south of the crash scene.

WOMAN HAS BABY IN ARMS

Haeussinger, executive editor Gordon Closway and reporter William White of the Winona Republican-Herald were among the first to reach the wreckage.

Closway said he counted 10 dead in the plane. One was a woman still holding a baby in her arms.

The pilot, Captain Robert Johnson of St. Paul, was still in the nose of the ship, Closway said.

“Bodies were scattered over a mile area,” Closway said. “We didn’t find all the bodies, but I don’t see how anyone could have lived through it.”

Closway said it took them nearly two hours to reach the crash scene after they arrived at Fountain City.

NEAR SCENIC RIVER ROUTE

The crash is near the Scenic River route of the Burlington railway on one side is the river which is bordered with swamp lands. Then beyond the right-of-way area are the bluffs, many of them with sheer sides.

Mrs. Charles Guenther, a farm woman, said she and her husband witnessed the crash from their automobile while returning to fountain city.

“We were returning home from Winona,” Mrs. Guenther said. “When we saw the plane rolling like a barrel. Some pieces of the plane fell off. It was raining hard but we didn’t think there was much wind.

“Then it crashed into a large wooded area.”

The plane’s crew included Dave Brenner, co-pilot, Minneapolis, and Mary Ungs, stewardess, Minneapolis.

Aviation EX

Airbus – Air New Zealand.

OK, so the Northwest Airlines captain’s story is that he and his co-pilot where wide awake when they

OK, so the Northwest Airlines captain’s story is that he and his co-pilot where wide awake when they missed the Minneapolis airport on their way from San Diego. But let’s backtrack a bit. According to Captain Timothy Cheney and First Officer Richard Cole, the latter took out his laptop to tutor the captain on the new company policies brought about by a recent NWA merger.

While the pilots were simultaneously having their sky-high tutoring session and commanding the aircraft, they reportedly ignored quite a number of radio calls for about 90 minutes. Concealed behind the cockpit door, the session took place during the time when they should have already been preparing the passenger plane to land.

All of this has left everyone guessing whether the pilots where telling the truth and whether they might have actually fallen asleep, causing them to miss the airport. If the tutoring did take place, wouldn’t that mean that the two pilots were wide awake? And isn’t a wide awake person alert under any circumstances requiring sheer focus and attention, his chances of missing a detail slim?

Most people think that two pilots missing an airport by that much could only have been dozing off among the clouds. The pressing question now is will the two pilots admit to sleeping on the plane by 11/10?

So far, 54% of Predicto voters say no while 46% say yes.

While it can be observed that most voters think that the only plausible reason for the two pilots’ blunder was that they were asleep, voters are split when it comes to wondering whether both pilots would admit to napping while cruising. And if they would at all, it wouldn’t be happening that soon. One voter believes that admitting to sleeping while taking full command of the plane could cost the two pilots their jobs — which it did.

Then again, as one voter said, they could just make something up stating that they were just taking a rest and that they didn’t mean to fly to another state.

(Today in the Sky, crankyflier, фотогалерея).

А вот в Star Alliance уже три американца – United, Continental и US Airways.

Не менее предсказуемым оказалось присуждение 4 звёзд таким перевозчикам, как Air New Zealand, Air France, British Airways, Japan Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Virgin Atlantic и другим. Впрочем, все традиционные американские авиакомпании тоже получили 3 звезды (American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Northwest Airlines, United Airlines, US Airways). Air Koryo.

My good friend and fellow airline pilot, Mike Preihs, forwards this tongue-in-cheek final insight on the professional mindset at Northwest Airlines:

It’s hard to understand how the Northwest Airlines pilots got that incredibly distracted on their recent attempt to fly directly to MSP…especially after a long restful San Diego layover.
As is obvious in this typical Airbus cockpit photo, there is enough going on to keep the pilots quite busy, and hardly any way to explain away their inattention…falling asleep or otherwise.

UPDATE: Southwest Airlines has apologized for kicking the mother and son off of the flight. Pamela R

UPDATE: Southwest Airlines has apologized for kicking the mother and son off of the flight.

Pamela Root and her son, Adam, were on their way home to San Jose, California (where I live) when they were kicked off Southwest Flight 637 on Monday afternoon. The reason? The child wanted dad, wanted to take off, and was a bit too loud for the crew and passengers.

Usually my kids are great on flights, but I’ve been in this position before. I would guess that the child would have given in once the flight took off, but they were never given the chance. I REALLY hope that Southwest Airlines looks into this, at least to find out more about what happened. Was the child kicked off immediately? Was the mother given a few minutes to settle him down? Was he kicking seats or causing a major disruption (if this is the case then it is definitely justified). I always fly with Southwest and would hate to see this issue not be at least looked into for all of the facts.

While I understand that there are those who will say that the mother and child should have been removed, without all of the details, I would have to disagree just because I’ve been on MANY flights with kids who are unruly like this and I’ve just learned thatit’s just a part of life.

As a parent, I know what it’s like to have a child who can be difficult at times. Like I said before, most of the time, my kids are great on flights. We even get compliments from other passengers who appreciate how good they are, and we always love that! But there are times when they aren’t, I would hate to be removed from a flight because we were having trouble getting them to settle down. Sometimes it takes longer than other times, but eventually, they do relax. Food always helps, their medicine helps too. Keeping them awake through their nap time until the flight is great because many times, they’re asleep before the plane takes off! It may sound funny, but even other supportive passengers can help!

We do our best as good parents to respect those around us. If you want to read about a bad parent, then you should check out my posts on Casey Anthony.

On this issue, feel free to agree or disagree with me. That’s what discussion is for

From the San Jose Mercury News:

Pamela Root’s 2-year-old son was screaming for the Southwest Airlines plane to “Go! Plane! Go!”

“I want Daddy!” Adam shouted. Over and over again.

Despite her embarrassment, the stay-at-home San Jose mom remained confident that once the plane took off and she fed him, Adam would calm down and take a nap — just as he had on the half-dozen other plane rides with Mom.

The flight crew wasn’t willing to find out.

With her luggage heading back home without her, Root was stuck in

Amarillo, Texas, and forced to buy a portable crib and diapers and stay another night with her parents. Still fuming, she wants Southwest to apologize and compensate her for the flight and things she bought. Adam’s father, Mike Root, a software engineer at Symantec, who was waiting for them in San Jose, is also livid.

Southwest, with its fun and family-friendly reputation, immediately began looking into the matter on Thursday at the request of the Mercury News. Spokeswoman Marilee McInnis said it’s “very rare” to ask someone to leave a flight, and especially “unusual” to remove a crying child.

From the New York Times:

The Oakland Tribune is reporting that a Southwest Airlines crew ordered Pamela Root and her young son off a flight from Amarillo back home to San Jose this week, because the boy was screaming “Go! Plane! Go!”

“I want Daddy!” repeatedly while the jet waited in line for takeoff. Root told reporter Lisa Fernandez that she had seen Adam like this before. Her strategy was to wait to feed him until after the plane took off, she says, which made him a little cranky for a short while, but insured that he would soon calm down and take a nap.

The plane returned to the gate for what the pilot described as “a passenger issue” which was the first Root knew she and her son were being forced to deplane. As she describes it, the conversation with the attendant who escorted her off went something like this:

“We just can’t tolerate that for two hours.”
“He’ll be fine once we take off.”
“We’ve heard that before.”

The Case of the Northwest Pilots keeps getting funnier and funnier. Of course, it wouldn’t be

The Case of the Northwest Pilots keeps getting funnier and funnier. Of course, it wouldn’t be one bit amusing if it had happened to me, but as Woody Allen once said, when I get a hangnail, it’s tragedy; when you fall down the stairs, it’s comedy. Or maybe it wasn’t Woody Allen. Maybe it was Paul Allen. Or Herb. Sorry. Just thinking about those two in the cockpit doing… what was it they were doing?… makes my mind wander.

As you know, original speculation was that the pilots were taking their semi-approved staggered naps simultaneously. This made sense to me. Flying one of those big planes is almost as boring as running a business meeting. Once the thing is up in the air, you set the automatic controls, lean back and wait for it to be over. It’s my estimate that fully 63% of all business people have at one time or another copped a parcel of Z’s when the gears of the machine were grinding. Why shouldn’t pilots? Okay, I can think of a lot of reasons why not and I’m sure you can too. But the idea that these guys slept through their wake up alarm and allowed their enormous vehicle to drift over the landing zone didn’t seem far-fetched.

Yesterday I heard that the somnolence theory has now been supplanted by the story that the two were cruising the web and lost track of the time. This summons up a couple of images to my mind. I’m thinking they weren’t just Googling. I’m willing to bet that if they were online, it was some kind of World of Warcraft thing. As good as YouTube or Wikipedia might be, you don’t lose yourself in it the way you do when a Orc is about to hammer in your brain pan and send you back sixteen levels. There they are, 37,000 feet up, a planeful of people behind them, whacking away at their joysticks in some digital dungeon? I can buy that. In the days I was addicted to DOOM, I used to spend the entire night blasting away at hideous monsters, so in the zone that I didn’t realize that the sun had risen until my wife came in to tell me it was time to go to work. So maybe that’s what they were doing when they were out of touch for 78 minutes. As an explanation, it still seems pretty lame to me. Maybe one was sleeping and the other was earning experience points as a Zarkon warrior or something like that.

Anyway you slice it, though, it points to a breakdown in the system somewhere. Now it turns out it wasn’t just the snoozy (boozy?) gamer/pilot dudes who are in hot water. The air traffic controllers and the FAA, which is supposed to regulate such things, were egregiously late in notifying the military of the wayward Northwest flight to Minneapolis. The information that a flight has essentially gone out of the blue and into the black is supposed to be conveyed in about 10 minutes time. It took at least 40 minutes for the news to be conveyed upward to the guys who monitor our skies. Doesn’t generate a whole lot of confidence, does it?

All of this is capped off by the news that the pilot’s union is unhappy with the fact that the FAA has revoked the licenses of the pilots in question and is now preparing a response. I’ll be interested to see it.

Last week the story broke about a Northwest Airlines flight that got diverted and missed its intended destination by oh about 150 MILES. Now I have absolutely no sense of direction. I’ve lived in the same city for more than 10 years and still get lost. But 150 miles? Are you freaking kidding me?

Wait it gets better. So naturally, everyone’s wondering what were they doing? How could this happen? Were they sleeping? Were they hurt? Was it a terrorist? I mean this is a post-9/11 world we live in, we have to take these things into consideration.

These brainiacs, Captains Timothy Cheney and Richard Cole, adamantly denied sleeping on the job. They instead, initially, say they were engrossed in a heated argument and lost track of time. A HEATED ARGUMENT? Are you freaking kidding me? Was that really the best you can do? At least if you said you were sleeping you could get some sympathy points, dillweeds. Oh the poor pilots they’re so fatigued and overworked.

It turns out these geniuses were on their laptops. Other than them reading this blog there is no excuse that will fly with me on this. It’s totally unacceptable. So, one of you couldn’t fly the plane while the other surfed for porn? I’m just saying.

Now I confess I occasionally use my cell phone while driving. It’s not a habit (I’m not Maria Shriver for crissakes). But occasionally the need to send a text or make a call coincides with me being in my car. (When you live in a city that tops the worst commutes list annually this tends to happen). I realize this is dangerous and I’m not proud of it, but this is altogether different. There were hundreds of lives in your hands, literally. Thank God no one was hurt.

The craziest thing is the airline has no policy against this. So who knows how often this is happening. I don’t even want to imagine that the person piloting my plane is playing Mafia Wars on Facebook. It’s frightening. The airline industry has enough of a stigma for being unsafe with plane crashes and drunk pilots, these guys are not helping at all.

I hope if anything good comes out of this mess. I hope that the FAA will review the policies and institute measures to prevent this from happening again. I mean it would seem pretty obvious to me that surfing the Net and flying the plane don’t exactly fit well together, but hey what do I know.

The winners of the today’s award have pulled one of the most inexcusable and ridiculous acts. Last Wednesday, Oct 21 the flight crew of Northwest Airlines Flight 188 missed their intended destination by 150 miles. Capt. Timothy B. Cheney, 53, and First Officer Richard Cole, 54, were experienced officers, not rookies. Until this incident Cheney had a spotless record. The pilots were oblivious of attempts by air traffic controllers to contact them for over an hour. National Guard jets were even on standby to intervene. Cheney and Cole were so engrossed with the new pilot scheduling program on their personal laptops that they were unaware of their surroundings. Further it has been reported that the pilots were using overhead speakers and not headphones which can make it harder to hear radio communication. The FAA has revoked the pilot license of Cheney and Cole. I guess they do not have to worry about learning the new scheduling program. This incident kind of makes me wonder about that using electronic devices can interfere with flight communication and control is being giving to the wrong group of people.

Washington (CNN) — The Federal Aviation Administration has revoked the licenses of the two Northwest Airlines pilots who overshot a Minnesota airport by 150 miles during a 78-minute period of radio silence last week.

Capt. Timothy B. Cheney, 53, and First Officer Richard I. Cole, 54, were piloting Northwest Flight 188 from San Diego, California, to the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport Wednesday when air traffic controllers lost radio contact with the Airbus A320 over the Denver, Colorado, area.

The FAA said the revocations cite several violations of regulations, including failure to comply with air traffic control and clearances and operating carelessly and recklessly.

The pilots have 10 days to appeal the revocations, which are effective immediately, to the NTSB, the FAA said.

Flight 188 carried 144 passengers, the two pilots and three flight attendants.
