รายงานข่าวจากไซแมนเทคระบุว่าเป็นอีกครั้งหนึ่ง ที่สแปมเมอร์พุ่งเป้ามาที่เว็บไซต์โซเชียลเน็ตเวิร์กที่ดูน่าเชื่อถือ เพื่อล่อลวงเหยื่อที่ไม่ทันระวังตัว ซึ่งครั้งนี้เป็นคราวของเฟสบุ๊กนั่นเอง ฝ่ายปฏิบัติการตอบสนองภัยคุกคามของไซแมนเทคพบว่าสแปมเมอร์อาศัยความนิยมของ เฟสบุ๊กมาเป็นช่องทางในการปล่อยไวรัส Trojan.Bredolab ซึ่งเป็นไวรัสประเภทโทรจันที่แพร่กระจายไปสู่วงกว้างอย่างต่อเนื่องในปีนี้ โทรจันตัวนี้มีความสามารถในการโหลดแอปพลิเคชันขโมยรหัสผ่านบอท รูทคิท และโปรแกรมหลอกลวงต่างๆเข้าสู่ระบบ

สแปม เมอร์ทำการหลอกลวงผู้ใช้ด้วยการส่งอีเมลแจ้งเตือนเกี่ยวกับความผิดพลาด เรื่องของรหัสผ่านในการเข้าเฟสบุ๊ก โดยโน้มน้าวให้ผู้รับทำการเปลี่ยนรหัสผ่านใหม่ โดยให้เข้าไปที่ zipไฟล์ ที่แนบมาเพื่อดูรหัสใหม่ ซึ่งใน zip ไฟล์ ที่ว่าจะแฝงไวรัส Trojan.Bredolab มาด้วย ตามตัวอย่างอีเมลด้านล่าง

ไซแมนเทค ได้แนะนำการป้องกันภัยจากการถูกโจมตีในลักษณะนี้ ได้แก่

1. ก่อนจะคลิ๊กเข้าไปที่ไหนก็ตามให้ระมัดระวัง โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งในเวลาคลิกลิงก์ที่ไม่ทราบที่มา

2. ควรจำไว้เสมอว่าห้ามทำการโต้ตอบกับอีเมลขยะ เพราะการตอบรับจะยิ่งทำให้สแปมเมอร์รู้ว่าอีเมลขยะที่ส่งหว่านออกไปมีผู้รับที่แท้จริง จะทำให้ได้รับอีเมลขยะเพิ่มมากขึ้น โดยเฉพาะการคลิกลิงก์ในอีเมลขยะ เพื่อปฏิเสธการรับข้อความจะยิ่งเป็นการยืนยันกับสแปมเมอร์ว่ามีคนเปิดอ่านอีเมลขยะ ควรลบอีกเมลขยะที่น่าสงสัยในทันทีโดยไม่ต้องเปิดอ่าน

3. มีอีเมลเอาไว้ใช้หลายอันสำหรับการใช้งานประเภทต่างๆ โดยมีหนึ่งอีเมลเอาไว้สำหรับใช้งานส่วนตัวเช่นติดต่อกับครอบครัวและเพื่อนฝูง มีอีเมลอีกหนึ่งอันเอาไว้รับข่าวสารต่างๆ และอีกหนึ่งอันเอาไว้สั่งซื้อของทางอินเทอร์เน็ต

4. ระวังให้ดีก่อนที่จะกรอกอีเมลแอดเดรสของคุณลงในเว็บ เพราะอีเมลของคุณที่โชว์อยู่บนเว็บเพจเหล่านี้สามารถถูกอ่านได้ด้วยโปรแกรม บอทที่ทำหน้าที่คอยเก็บสะสมอีเมลตามเว็บเพจต่างๆ

New Norton 360 Arrives as a Beta (and How's Norton Treating You Lately?)

Last month, Symantec released Norton Internet Security 2010 and Norton Antivirus 2010, updated versions of its venerable Windows security packages. They incorporated a new approach to threat detection–Symantec calls it Quorum–which attempts to increase accuracy and reduce resource-hogging tendencies by gauging the reputation of files based on data collected from the millions of folks who run the company’s software. (The reputation of a core Windows file that didn’t do anything suspicious would be high; the reputation of a file which Quorum hadn’t seen before which appeared to be behaving in a dangerous manner would be low.)

Today, Symantec is releasing a free beta version of Norton 360 4.0, the next release of its suite which includes both security and management tools such as backup and PC tuneup tools. It’s the first version of Norton 360 with Quorum, and in conjunction with today’s releasing, Symantec is touting recent test results for Norton Internet Security 2010 from third-party labs. The UK-based Dennis Technology Lab tested ten security products and gave Norton alone a perfect score; it also did well in recent testing by AV-Comparatives.org and AV-Test.org. (I’m not an expert on the relative strengths of independent security labs’ testing techniques, but I know that AV-Test knows their stuff and tells it like it is–they’re the lab we worked with back when I was at PC World.)

Whenever I mention Norton security products, I’m used to PC users reflexively accusing them of being in-your-face annoying and sapping precious system resources to an absurd level. Symantec clearly heard the gripes, too–the changes in both last year’s Norton 2009 products and this year’s Norton 2010 ones emphasis a general reduction in intrusiveness, and much of the advertising is devoted to conveying that it’s changed its ways. But computer users have memories like elephants, and I suspect that some will continue to look askance at Norton for years to come even if Symantec’s cleaned up its act.

So here’s a question for folks who are running any 2009 or 2010 version of any version of Norton security: How’s it treating you?

Έρευνα για πιθανές παραβιάσεις των αντιμονοπωλιακών κανονισμών από το τμήμα συσκευών οπτικών δίσκων της Sony στις ΗΠΑ διεξάγουν οι αμερικανικές αρχές, όπως ανακοίνωσε η ίδια η εταιρία.
Εκπρόσωπός της δήλωσε ότι η Sony Optiarc America, η οποία προμηθεύει σειρά συσκευών οπτικών δίσκων, συμπεριλαμβανομένων αυτών για δίσκους Blu-ray, DVDs, CD-ROMs και CD-Rs, έλαβε κλήτευση από το Τμήμα κατά των Μονοπωλίων του Αμερικανικού Υπουργείου Δικαιοσύνης. Η ιστοσελίδα AppleInsider αναφέρει σε σχετικό της άρθρο πως στους νέους iMac 27″ που διαθέτουν την είσοδο DisplayPort, θα δέχονται σήμα μόνο από συσκευές με έξοδο DisplayPort.

Συγκεκριμένα στην ιστοσελίδα iFixit, σε τέστ που έκαναν με την είσοδο DisplayPort που διαθέτει το μοντέλο του iMac 27″, διαπίστωσαν πως δεν μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθεί η οθόνη του για την απεικόνιση βίντεο υψηλής ευκρίνειας από συσκευές που δεν διαθέτουν έξοδο DisplayPort. Στις δοκιμές που έγιναν, ενώ το MacBook Pro 13″ που διαθέτει θύρα εξόδου mini DisplayPort δούλεψε άψογα, σε άλλες συσκευές όπως τα PS3 Slim, MacBook και MacBook Pro που δεν διαθέτουν την συγκεκριμένη έξοδο και χρησιμοποιώντας τον αντάπτορα Mini DisplayPort>DVI , δεν υπήρξε αποτέλεσμα.[next]

Stay Safe Online, Remove Viruses and Spyware / Adware Part 1

I am going to do a multi part series on Online Safety, and keeping your computer clean. I will keep it simple but I know some great software out there to help in this battle. Ready, well then let’s go.

First before you do anything else, always make sure your operating system is updated. In Windows I would suggest going to http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/ and make sure Microsoft Update is installed. This adds a nice function to the Windows Update feature allowing the updating of other Microsoft software like Office, Windows Live, and so on. Once it is installed run it! Those security updates are a first line of defense. To run it afterward in Windows Vista and 7 just start the Windows Update program in the Start Menu. In Windows XP click on the Safety menu in Internet Explorer 8 (Which if you don’t have installed, please do so by downloading it from here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/Internet-explorer/default.aspx) and click on Windows Update. In Windows 2000 you click on the Tools menu in Internet Explorer 6 SP1.

Now once Updates have been installed, I want to talk to you. Even if you don’t use Internet Explorer, always make sure it is updated. There are other components of the Windows operating system that use components of IE. This will help keep you safe to have it updated. Also Windows 2000 users I do not suggest using Internet Explorer 6 SP1 for your daily browsing however keep it updated, click here to read about other safer alternatives.

Updates are your first line of defense but your second line is some form of software that will actively protect you from Viruses and Spyware. Also make sure every once in a while you run a full system scan to clean up your computer.

1. Windows Defender comes with Windows Vista and 7 and can be installed in XP It is small and light weight and also does not bog the system down. Leaving it on and updated is a great tool, but it is mostly for Spyware and Adware. It updates through Windows update so if your system updates automatically then your set. You can run it manually though and do a full scan to clean up your system too. In Windows 7 Windows Defender is in the Control panel, in Windows Vista and if installed in XP it is in the Start Menu. 2. Microsoft Security Essentials, You should have some form of Virus protection on your computer, you really should, but if you don’t and can’t afford it, Microsoft did something really cool recently. They released Security Essentials. It is built off of the Windows Live One Care and their corporate version Forefront. Security Essentials has been rated well so far and I suggest it over AVG however AVG is another great Free alternative. It will replace Windows Defender as it does both Virus and Spyware. It is like Defender in that it will not bog a system down at all. It also updates through Windows Update. I suggest it. 3. If you have the money to pay for good protection I suggest Norton Antivirus.(Norton Internet Security is alright too but I just prefer Norton Antivirus, just less software) It also does both Virus and Spyware protection. It has its own method for updates and does not bog a system down at all, not in the newer versions, the software is greatly improved. Going back to the Windows Updates, part of them is a tool updated monthly to remove common viruses and spyware called the Malicious Software Removal Tool. Malicious Software Removal Tool

Now there are a few good tools for removing Spyware and Adware. I suggest installing them all and running them, this helps to ensure you remove as many threats as possible. Make sure that after you have installed them to run an update in each of the programs before you scan, this will help ensure you get everything the program can detect. I suggest installing these tools and when your done with them uninstall them. I prefer to not have every starting with Windows and slowing it down. However if you want something other than Windows Defender protecting your system I suggest Spybot.

1. Spybot – Search & Destroy, This has been one of the best tools for years. Time and time again is gets the more popular stuff the first time. It is small and light weight. if you are not happy with Windows Defender then this is a great program to leave running for active protection, but make sure to turn off and disable Windows Defender. It is available for Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, ME, XP, Vista, and 7. You can get it at http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

2. Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware, this is a newer program in the mix and I think it works rather well. This is another tool I install, update, run a full scan and then uninstall it. It works quite well to help disinfect a system. 4. CounterSpy Antispyware, This program is somewhat based off of the old Giant Antispyware which later became Windows Defender. CounterSpy is still around and it has a 15 day trial to try it out making it a great tool for removing spyware. 5. Spyware Doctor, now the only version that is free and will remove detected threats is part of the Google Pack. Make sure you only select the programs you want to install from the Google Pack, they try to install a lot of junk by default. The program scans rather quickly and I like to run it just in case the other programs did not pick up something. You can get it for Windows XP, Vista, and 7 from http://pack.google.com/

Spyware Doctor

This will all help to protect you online and keep your computer clean, but this is not all you can do or run on your computer. I will talk about what else you can do in part 2. For now I hope this helps keep you safer.

If you don’t feel comfortable with doing something like this there is a great service you can subscribe to or just for a one time issue. Check out My Computer Works at http://www.mycomputerworks.com/ I know many of the techs there and they have a great group of people. I highly suggest them. It is like having your own helpdesk to call when you have a problem. They also do one time incidents.

I think I have a virus on my computer. Even though I have Norton Internet Security software, it doesn’t see the virus. It’s the Total Security Virus and it is malicious. Be careful when you talk to computer tech support people and do your homework. I find a lot of answers on Google. It seems like I may need to reload Windows and reinstall my Norton software. (My computer Start-Up is all messed up). Stay tuned for the answer…

How to avoid spyware and adware

I’ve said before that I don’t have the tech chops to get into an extremely detailed description of computer security issues, but I think its important to at least understand the basics. The minutiae of VBS or C+ programming doesn’t matter for our purposes here much as the following facts:

There is a lot of malicious software out there
It is important to know how to recognize it and how to avoid it
It is important to keep your security software updated, and to make sure it is legitimate software from a trusted source

Let’s dive right in. Warning: this is one of my longer posts.

Basic Definitions

Malware: This is sort of an “umbrella term” for software intended to harm your computer. It includes (but is not limited to) spyware, misleading adware, viruses, worms and trojan horses.

Spyware: This is a term for software that, in some form, sends information from your computer to another entity without your consent. This information can be anything from words typed into search engines (Google, e.g.), websites visited or even keystrokes. Spyware can pose a serious identity theft risk, as it can relay financial account information (account numbers and passwords) to a third party.

Adware: Adware is software that displays advertising in some form. Not all adware is necessarily malicious (the free version of the Eudora email client contains benign adware), but sometimes it is. Often, spyware and adware are bundled together.

How Spyware and Adware Infect Your Computer

Some spyware is intentional. Some companies install keyloggers on their computers to keep tabs on employee computer use. I’m just guessing, but I’ll bet every letter you type into an FBI computer is logged.

However, the spyware I’m talking about is the kind that installs itself on your computer without your knowledge or consent. These programs can install through a variety of channels. Some of them are:

Backdoor: These programs exploit “holes” in your web browser or computer’s security features. You can become infected simply by visiting a website that has been set up to install malware, and you probably won’t even know it at the time.

Piggybacking: Sometimes software you want is bundled with software you might not want. Adware often shows up in this form, but other malware uses this method as well. I mentioned the free Eudora email client earlier. This is pretty benign adware—in return for not paying for the full version of the software, you put up with some banner ads, from which the software company earns revenue. However, you’ve also got examples like Bonzi Buddy, which was designed to appeal to children (and secretly send information about their web browsing habits to a third party). Bad scene.

Trojan Horses: A trojan horse is software that poses as useful or desirable software, but is actually spyware, adware or other malware. Some of the most common examples right now are Fake Virus Scan Pop-Ups, which I talked about a couple weeks ago. While visiting a website, a window pops up with a frantic message telling you that your computer is infected with a virus, and to click “OK” to run a scan now. This downloads software, some of which may actually even look like a real virus scanner, that can wreak havoc on your computer, to say nothing of the financial threat it could pose if it contains some really nasty spyware. I want to touch on a few examples of trojan horse software here:

MS Antivirus: This is a fake virus scanner that can disable your real antivirus and anti-spyware programs. Other than that, it’s mostly just annoying, but turning off your security software opens the door to all kinds of other infections. MS Antivirus goes by about a million different names, and it is constantly being updated to evade detection by legitimate security software, which just illustrates the importance of keeping your antivirus software updated. Pay for the subscription. It is worth it.

No-Adware: This was a trojan horse designed to confuse you with a name similar to Ad-Aware, which is a legitimate product. No-Adware is supposedly no longer considered ”rogue” software, but you know what? I still haven’t forgiven them.

Tattoodle: This is an application that usually gets installed (intentionally) through Facebook. I don’t know yet if it’s malicious or just annoying, but I don’t think I care: it changes your browser’s homepage, makes itself difficult to remove and its logo is designed to make you think it’s related to Google. If it looks like malware and acts like malware, I call it malware. Just my opinion.

What To Do About Spyware and Adware

Sometimes spyware doesn’t have a whole lot of symptoms. A sudden increase in popup advertisements, constant frantic popups that claim your computer is infected, or just a sudden decrease in system performance can all be signs of a malware infection. I suppose having your identity or financial account information stolen could also be signs, but we’re not going to let it get to that point, are we?

First and foremost, it is of vital importance to install good antivirus and anti-spyware software, and to keep this software updated, even if that means paying for a subscription every year. Second and also foremost, it is vital to make sure this software is the real thing. Here are what I think of as the “Big Three” real, actual, non-malware computer security programs, along with some other software:

Norton: This is what I use. It currently comes in three versions for home users—AntiVirus, Internet Security, and 360, which range in price from $39.99 to $69.99 (although I’m pretty sure 360 is normally $79.99). As with all security software, you also have to subscribe to the updates every year, but it is well worth it.

McAfee: The Pepsi to Norton’s Coke, McAfee is another good one. It’s not my favorite, but I think that has to do more with the look and feel of the software than its actual functionality. As of this writing, its home computer versions range from $29.99 to $39.99, so it’s definitely more of a “budget” option. It works fine, though.

Kaspersky: This one actually originates from Russia. It is excellent antivirus software, and I’m pretty sure at one point years ago it was absolutely free to download and update. Alas, you have to pay for it now; prices are similar to Norton, ranging from $39.95 to $79.95.

Spybot Search & Destroy: This is free software that I highly recommend. It is not a replacement for any of the three antivirus softwares above, as it only concentrates on spyware and adware, but it is a great little backup program to have on hand. You’d be surprised how much potentially harmful stuff slips past your antivirus software. Beware of trojan horses with similar names—only get it from the website I’ve linked here.

Ad-Aware: This is similar to Spybot Search & Destroy. There is a free version still available, but you can also buy software from their site. To be honest, I haven’t used this one in a long time. Again, beware of imitators.

One final word on avoidance: I think there are certain types of websites that tend to contain more malware than others. You’re mostly safe when it comes to the giant corporate sites like Amazon, but I would never suggest you stick only to huge corporate sites. You miss out on the whole democratic, DIY side of the Internet if you do that.

However, any time you’re viewing sites that offer pirated software, movies or music, or sites that appeal to the…ahem…prurient interests, you’re going to run into a lot more malware, especially in the form of trojan horses, than you might otherwise. So my advice is to go forth and browse, have fun and don’t be afraid to venture outside the “mall,” but try to avoid the seedy side of town.

When I read on BraveWords that Dokken had produced a TV ad for Norton Internet Security 2010, I was horrified. I have a fondness for certain ‘80s cheesy metal bands, and Dokken is one of them. I also have a special hatred of Norton Internet Security, which causes all kinds of unnecessary problems for novice computer users. My first thought was “No Don, please no.”

But then I watched it. And then I laughed. Out loud. For real. It’s hilarious. If only it was for a product that wasn’t shit.

Fake virus scan pop-ups

I don’t normally write a lot about specific computer-related issues, mostly because I don’t have the technical chops to really get into a lot of detail.

However, there is something I feel needs to be addressed: fake virus scanning software.

Have you ever gone to a website and had a realistic-looking window pop up, telling you that your computer has been infected with a virus? Usually, it will tell you to “click here” to run a “free virus scan.”

That was malicious software. If you “click[ed] here,” it very likely installed some form of spyware or adware onto your computer.

These are nasty programs. At best, they can annoy you by highjacking your homepage. so that when you open a web browser, some weird “search” page appears that logs every single thing you search for and spams you accordingly. It can lead to constant pop-up advertisements, misdirection to fake websites, and more.

At worst, they can install spyware, such as a keylogger that tracks every single thing you type on your computer, including logins and passwords. Big trouble if you happen to log in to do some online banking or bill payment.

When these fake virus scanners show up, there is always a button to “cancel,” but frankly, I don’t trust it. It could be set up to do the exact same thing as the “Install” button. I always click the “X” in the upper-right corner of the window.

Then I shut down my web browser, disconnect from the Internet and run an immediate virus scan, because I also don’t really trust that “X” I just clicked. Perhaps I am overreacting, but spyware freaks me out. Better to overreact than to give someone access to my online accounts.

If you already have a good virus scanner (I use Norton Internet Security) and are keeping your updates current (and I know you are, right?), they usually run pretty silently in the background. They might throw out a pop-up window if you’re heading straight into serious trouble, but it won’t look like just a regular “Windows window,” and it won’t ask you to install anything (you’ve already installed the software) or talk about “free trials.”

No matter what brand of virus protection software you’re using, I would also highly recommend Spybot Search & Destroy. This is a program designed specifically to target spyware, adware and other malware. Most likely, your primary virus scanner will catch everything, but it never hurts to have a little backup. Spybot S&D is free, but beware of software with a similar-but-not-quite-the-same name. I’d recommend you only get it from the site linked above.

Whatever you do, don’t be taken in by fake virus scanners.

Just a short update.

It is the same term though. Looks like a 14 days trial and possibly (I hope) renewable for another 14. And then you are on your own again without a product to try/buy since the real release won’t be out.

After giving up on Norton’s NIS, I was protectionless for a few days. It was nervewrecking enough that I just can’t do it any more. So I resumed my search for the next temporary solution. Here’s a brief summary:

Norton 360 is out. Even the most current version is incompatible with Windows 7 and it doesn’t seem to have a beta or pre-release version available. (At least I can’t find one.) Wasted 2 hours on it. Save yourself some time.

Norton Internet Security 2010’s webpages are up but the beta/pre-release wasn’t available yet. No go there.

McAfee has a beta version but repeated attempt to access it failed. I’m not entirely certain what’s going on. It could be that the site really is broken. Or it could be that it detected Windows 7 RC (as oppose to Windows 7 Beta) and decided it wasn’t going to let me in. Garbage.

4th try is Trend Micro Internet Security. Took a good 30 minutes to get it downloaded and installed. You can just tell this is not a polished product. It talks the talk but if you are not verse in computer, you are going to need help. The install-from-the-web process didn’t work. I have to download the package, unpack it myself, and run the installer manually. Even that it failed the first time. Not to fault them or anything, they were freeware for quite a few years before turning commercial. After a couple of attempts, it is working. According to their webpage, it should work for at least a month. We shall see.

…this is painful…

Windows 7 RC vs Norton Internet Security (Pre-release)

Bleeding edge has its price. Per my earlier post some weeks ago, the old Norton Internet Security (Vista compatible) doesn’t work with Windows 7 Beta or Windows 7 RC. Symantec posted a pre-release version of NIS that does work. So all was well… for a little while. After 14 days, the subscription expired and it went online and renewed it for another 14 days. I figure it was good until Windows 7 actually comes out and the real NIS release goes on sale.

Nooooo. After renewing once 14 days ago, the subscription expired again. This time, it won’t renew. So I went online and had a chat with their support to see what can be done. Mind you that I still have a current subscription of NIS that is not being used so I’m exactly sponging off for free. We went back and forth a few rounds. Basically, it boils down to:

Me: I have a current subscription to NIS and you have the pre-release NIS for Windows 7 that works, why can’t I just use it?

Symantec: The pre-release is like trial ware, we can’t renew it.

Me: You did for 14 days. Why can’t you do it again?

Symantec: Sorry, no can do.

Me: So even though people like me help you people test software AND you have the software, you won’t help. In addition, I’m a current subscriber and you are going to leave me hanging without a usable NIS for months.

Symantec: Too bad for you. Have a great day.

** Okay, s/he wasn’t that rude. I’m just grumpy.**

I guess they are just begging for me to leave. And these manufacturers wonder why they can’t maintain customer loyalty. *sigh*

Alright, the search for protection continues…
