What do you think? Personally the 1.4 GHz processor worries me, but I bet people will buy this for the aesthetics, rather than performance. The Dell Adamo XPS is available from Dell.com, for $1799.

I couldn’t resist the title. I bought four Letts of London baroque notebooks (A5) today – two black, one red an one brown. Since I didn’t even know that they existed in A5 and the store had an offer – 4 for the price of 3 – I couldn’t help myself. The paper seems so smooth and nice and cream coloured. One odd thing is that only every odd paper is lined – the other are blanks. I don’t think I have seen that before. I haven’t more than doodled a little in one of them, but I think I dare to say that it is more fountain pen friendly than Moleskine (the feathering is a disaster) and prettier and maybe more fountain pen friendly than Letts regular linen bound and Rhodia web notebook. I really like this flower-faux-alligator-bonded-leather pattern. It measures 21*15, has an inner pocket (I love to stuff notes and postcards and unfinished letters there) and a rubber band. Very nice new acquaintance. I think I’ll try it out properly tomorrow. Unfortunately I think it is a kind of Limited Edition. I really dislike the LE concept. If I like things I want to be able to buy them even after a limited time and if I don’t like them I don’t buy them anyway. Even toothpaste comes in LEs here. Silly silly silly.

You Dell (s dell) Mini 10v netbook owners who can’t wait to try the early builds of Google (s goog) Chrome OS on your system don’t have to wait any longer. You don’t even have to run it in a virtual machine like Kevin did, because Dell has you covered. Some folks at Dell spent some time with Chrome and got it running on a Mini 10v. They got the drivers working properly, although Wi-Fi is a bit flaky, and put it all together in a neat package for owners to download. Note that the download is a whopping 8 GB, and you should follow the instructions to get it working properly.

It’s nice to see Dell jump on Chrome OS so quickly. It bodes well that Dell might be officially supporting Chrome in the future.

Siempre que una empresa muestra desarrollos y productos en tecnologia OLED, nos sentimos obligados a escribir aunque sean unas cuantas lineas y es que la tecnologia OLED podria ser el futuro de la forma como vemos TV, pero lo que realmente nos importa son sus bajisimos requerimientos energeticos.

Esperamos ver pronto mas productos OLEDs en el mercado aunque por ser una tecnologia nueva por el momento los precios son el mayor obstaculo que no permitin comercializar masivamente una tecnología destinada a sustituir al plasma y a las TFT.

La compañía Orkin Design ha presentado el Rolltop, un ordenador portátil basado en la tecnología OLED (diodo orgánico de emisión de luz). La pantalla de 13 pulgadas, flexible y multitáctil, se enrolla como una persiana y el teclado, integrado en la misma, se convierte en virtual. El usuario del Rolltop consigue además una tablet de 17 pulgadas. Además, en su base dispone de la batería y otras conexiones, como los altavoces, webcam, puertos USB y suministro de corriente.

¿Serán como éste los portátiles del futuro? Este diseño conceptual requiere de muy pocos materiales, usa tecnología OLED para la pantalla táctil y pretende ser un ‘todo-en-uno’ que permita leer un libro electrónico, navegar por internet, ver una peli o cualquier otra cosa que solemos realizar con un ordenador.

I’m not sure now many different X-Slim notebooks that MSI can keep track of, but add another one to the list today. The X430 is the latest thin-and-light from MSI weighing in at 3.3 pounds — not bad for a notebook with a 14″ display. At that size, I think it could stand a higher resolution than 1366 x 768, but all the cool kids seem to be running that res nowadays. Unlike many other notebooks in this space, MSI opted for AMD’s second generation Neo platform that uses up to 18W of juice in lieu of the Intel CULV (s intc) package. The dual core AMD Athlon Neo X2 (s amd) is paired with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD3200 graphics chip which shares memory from the included 2 GB RAM module.

Other goodies include:

Fighting the flu last weekend has really hit me hard. I’m feeling better today but my stamina is shot.

I am working in the easy chair at home, and using the Tablet PC makes it more comfortable.

Say what you will about the Acer Aspire 8940G, it is one giant notebook. The 18.4-inch screen on this evaluation unit is as big as some external monitors on desktop systems, and the great audio / video components onboard make it a good multimedia laptop. In the video I show this big laptop, giving a brief walk around the device. It had to be brief as I couldn’t hold the 10+ lb. laptop up for very long. Take a look at this Acer, you’ll get a chance to see Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 running on a laptop. Hey, I couldn’t resist myself.

Another day brings another subsidized netbook to the U.S. This time it’s LG with their X120, which has seen sights around the rest of the world for a while now. The X120 is your basic Intel Atom (s intc) powered netbook with a 160 GB hard drive, 1 GB of RAM and Microsoft Windows XP (s msft). LG expects the six-cell battery to last for seven hours. Along with Wi-Fi, the 2.8 pound X120 includes an HSPA radio tuned to AT&T’s (s t) 3G frequencies, making it a perfect candidate for a data plan. That’s exactly what you’ll need, too — a $60 monthly data plan — to grab the X120 for $179.99 at your local Radio Shack.

LG also integrated Splashtop’s instant on solution for quick access to key applications an a connected browser. A dedicated “SmartOn” button boots the netbook into a basic Linux partition, making you productive in five seconds. When I last chatted with the DeviceVM folks — creators of Splashtop – nearly a year ago, they were still working on getting their product to work with 3G connections like the one included with the X120. I expect they have that ironed out now, but I’ll ping them directly to verify. As nice as a five-second boot time is, I’d want to use the browser wherever I am.

It’s always a bad idea to compute without protection, but methods vary according to personal preferences. I’m a padded gear bag kind of guy myself, but you’re just carrying a netbook, that can be overkill. So how does one protect a naked netbook? These Hard Candy cases might be the answer, but don’t get fooled by the name — they’re not edible.

The polycarbonate Hard Candy Bubble Shell protects a netbook from bumps and scratches while also providing a little color bling. Netbooks snap into the case, which is custom fitted for specific models, and can easily be removed. For now Hard Candy only offers a shell for the Acer Aspire One, HP Mini (s hpq) and ASUS Eee PC 1005 — each of which are $34.95. White, black, blue, red and pink are the colors to choose from, although a clear case option is there for netbook nudists.

Cases are now available for pre-order with shipping dates in the next few weeks. Hard Candy also protects the 13″ MacBook (s aapl) and MacBook Pro laptops, but with a larger size comes a larger price — $49.95.

It’s fairly difficult to find a sale on Apple (s aapl) notebooks on desktops. Apple rarely discounts its computing line, and online resellers usually require a rebate, if and when they offer a worthwhile discount. But last year, I took advantage of a pre-emptive Black Friday sale at Best Buy (s bbuy) — that’s when I picked up my unibody 13″ MacBook with a $150 discount over Apple’s pricing. There was no rebate, and I walked out of the store with MacBook in hand.

Sure enough, the same deal is in play this year. Best Buy started the discounts yesterday, and they only run through Wednesday of this week. Those new iMacs — including the 27″ unit I’m lusting after — are reduced in price by $100. MacBook Pro pricing is discounted between $100 and $200, depending on the model and configuration you want. Are these huge discounts? Not so much, but every dollar counts these days. And you typically won’t see these prices direct from Apple, unless you shop in the refurbished aisle.

Remember that you can run Microsoft Windows (s msft) on these devices as well — either natively through Apple’s Boot Camp, or through a virtual machine such as VMware Fusion (s vmw), Parallels Desktop or Sun’s VirtualBox (s java). This flexibility to run two of the most used consumer operating systems is one reason I tend to gravitate toward Apple hardware — especially when it’s on sale!

01. Tamanho da tela:

 Aqui você tem que fazer uma escolha essencial: hoje, os notebooks comuns (e mais econômicos) têm telas entre 14 e 15 polegadas. Se estiver disposto a pagar mais, você pode optar pelos modelos mais leves, chamados ultraportáteis, com telas de 13, 12 ou às vezes até 11 polegadas, ou pode ir para o extremo oposto e escolher um notebook gigante de 17 polegadas ou mais, que troca a mobilidade pelo tamanho de tela. Uma solução intermediária neste caso é comprar um notebook com tela pequena, mas conectá-lo a um monitor externo quando for usá-lo na sua mesa – assim você não abre mão da mobilidade, e nem da tela grande na sua mesa de trabalho. Caso o notebook vá ser usado para entretenimento (jogos, filmes, multimídia) primariamente, considere optar por uma tela widescreen. Para ilustrar, veja um ultraportátil relativamente barato (tela de 13,3 polegadas, 2,2kg e custando menos de R$ 2500).

02. Resolução da tela:

Para notebooks comuns, mesmo se forem ultraportáteis, a resolução de 1024 x 768 é o mínimo, perfeitamente aceitável para uso em aplicações comuns, como navegação, e-mail e edição de documentos. Resoluções maiores, como 1280 x 800, já são relativamente comuns em notebooks voltados para jogos ou multimídia – até mesmo em modelos mais baratos.

03. Peso:

Esta é uma escolha que influencia os demais itens. Notebooks mais leves usualmente têm telas menores, e vice-versa. A faixa econômica hoje varia entre os 2,3 e 3,1kg, aproximadamente. Eventualmente a leveza pode ser obtida abrindo mão da duração da bateria, portanto escolha de acordo com a sua demanda.

           
04. Modelo de teclado:

notebooks trazidos do exterior, e mesmo alguns modelos vendidos legalmente no Brasil, têm teclado internacional (sem a tecla da cedilha). Se você está acostumado a digitar em teclados brasileiros (o nome correto do modelo é ABNT-2), leve isto em conta na hora de escolher. Veja também o mecanismo do teclado, o tamanho das teclas, a distância entre elas e o posicionamento das teclas especiais – notebooks menores às vezes posicionam as teclas de forma pouco prática para digitar. Alguns modelos de notebooks de 17 polegadas, em contrapartida, trazem até mesmo o teclado numérico reduzido.

05. Bateria:

A duração da bateria é muito importante em diversas situações. Lembre-se sempre que o uso de redes sem fio e assistir DVDs são 2 grandes aceleradores do consumo. Raramente os fabricantes divulgam a duração da bateria em seu material promocional, mas você encontra esta informação em análises publicadas na Internet e em revistas especializadas. Na prática, optar por uma duração inferior a 2h é algo que só deve ser feito por quem vai usar o notebook como substituto do desktop. É relativamente raro, mas existem modelos com a bateria original durando até 7 horas.
 
06. Drives de CD e DVD:

O mais comum nos modelos atuais (inclusive nos mais baratos) é o drive Combo, com função de gravador de CD e leitor de DVD. Geralmente não custa muito mais caro substituir por um drive capaz de também gravar DVDs. Modelos avançados trazem a tecnologia Lightscribe, que “queima” um rótulo nos CDs e DVDs após gravá-los.
 

07. Tamanho do disco:

Hoje 70% dos modelos de notebook mais baratos disponíveis no mercado oficial têm HD de 80GB. Modelos mais avançados trazem até mesmo HDs de 120GB ou superiores. Na prática, para a maioria dos usos, 80GB são suficientes hoje – mas quanto mais espaço você puder ter, melhor. Uma alternativa para quem não quer pagar imediatamente o preço do armazenamento é comprar um modelo econômico, e mais tarde usar um HD externo como complemento.

08.Portas e conexões:

 não abra mão de pelo menos 2 portas USB 2.0, conector VGA (para projetor ou monitor externo), conectores para microfone e fones de ouvido, ao menos uma porta de expansão (PCMCIA/PC Card), Ethernet (rede local) e rede sem fio (Wi-Fi 802.11B/G ou superiores). Opcionalmente, dependendo do seu perfil de uso, considere S-Video, DVI, outras saídas de vídeo digital, leitores de cartões de memória, firewire, modems para linha discada, conexão para docking station, bluetooth, infravermelho.

09.Memória RAM:

A disponibilidade de memória costuma ser o principal fator de desempenho quando o usuário mantém mais de um programa aberto ao mesmo tempo. Se você não sabe quanta memória precisa, considere que precisará de 512MB, e que provavelmente tirará ainda mais proveito de um notebook de 1GB, se puder pagar o preço da memória adicional. Menos de 512MB é difícil de encontrar no mercado, e você não deve aceitar. Geralmente é possível ampliar a memória após a compra, mas memórias para notebook não são baratas. Quem precisa de mais de 512MB normalmente já sabe disso, devido ao seu perfil de uso (design gráfico, desenvolvimento de software, jogos avançados, etc.)
 

10.Placa e memória de vídeo:

 Para aplicativos comuns, como navegação na web, edição de texto, e-mail e até assistir filmes, este item faz pouca diferença. Quem usa aplicativos 3D ou jogos avançados pode precisar escolher um notebook com uma placa de vídeo mais cara e memória dedicada.

11. Processador e chipset:

Vale a mesma dica acima: para aplicativos e perfis comuns, é difícil errar ao escolher um notebook recente com processador Intel ou AMD. Existe grande variação (dual core ou não, 32 ou 64 bits, etc.) entre cada linha e modelo destas duas companhias, com influência no desempenho, aquecimento, consumo de bateria e mais, mas se você quiser comparar, o melhor é consultar um amigo geek – as opiniões variam muito, e a realidade do mercado também. Eu sou fã da plataforma Intel Centrino, e recomendo.

12.Assistência técnica e garantia:

Um ano de garantia é o mínimo necessário, e sempre é bom contar com uma assistência técnica na sua região. Marcas internacionais vendidas no Brasil de forma legítima (HP, Apple, Dell, IBM/Lenovo e várias outras) costumam contar com rede de assistência, e marcas nacionais como Positivo, ECS e Amazon PC também têm as suas. Comprando fora do Brasil, você está sujeito a encontrar dificuldade, entretanto – mesmo quando é um notebook de uma destas marcas.
