So, the other day I had a look at caching support in the Linked Open Data cloud and it turns out that there is a related discussion regarding caching on the ietf-http-wg@w3.org mailing list.

J’ai envie d’arrêter de rêver. De vivre mes rêves. Faire ce que j’ai toujours eu envie de faire. Vivre de ma passion. De ce que j’aime faire. Même si je ne suis pas bon.
J’ai envie d’arrêter la fac’. De commencer à chercher un vrai boulot. Je ne sens pas cette nouvelle année d’études. J’en ai plein la tête de ces profs’ de fac’ inintéressants, ennuyeux et plein de mauvaise foi.
Je veux gagner ma vie. Ecrire des livres. Ecrire des scénarios, des pièces de théâtres, des billets dans des journaux, des éditos dans les magazines. Je suis même preneur de chronique. The Connecticut Attorney General has requested more information from Blue Cross Blue Shield in order to determine if BCBS violated Connecticut law and acted in an unfair and deceptive manner because it waited TWO MONTHS TO NOTIFY RESIDENTS OF A BREACH.

According to Hunton & Williams,

“[t]he data contained on the stolen laptop included the names, addresses and Taxpayer Identification Numbers of approximately 19,000 health care providers in Connecticut.  The breach also involved thousands of Social Security numbers (“SSNs”), since an estimated 16-22% of individual health care providers use their SSNs as Taxpayer Identification Numbers.

Attorney General Blumenthal called “one of the most sizable and significant in Connecticut’s history,” involved the theft of a laptop containing confidential unencrypted data from the car of a BCBS employee in late August.  BCBS notified affected Connecticut residents of the breach in late October.”

The Attorney General needs to decide, as an initial regulatory decision, whether, in terms of protecting the citizens of the State of Connecticut, the delay was reasonable.

The answer is rather simple, really.   The starting point for the decision needs to be that any delay is unreasonable. That is, the instant that the data was compromised, the potential for harm had begun.  BCBS needs, therefore, to justify a reasonable reason why it was putting citizens’ financial security at risk.

The only reasonable excuse, the only possible rationale that can be justified is that BCBS could not determine who should be notified.  Even then, a notification should have been forthcoming to all potential victims.

What other reasonable excuse could there possibly be?  Pray tell?

I’ve been meaning to look at Growl for a while now.  I’m interested in apps that notify me of what’s happening so I’m not tied to any particular place.  I get how useful it would be to developers who are running long compiles or something but that’s really not me.  I looked through their application list and saw a couple of things that caught my eye so I decided to try it out.

Growl is an application that runs in the system tray of your computer and displays alert messages when various things happen on your computer.

Note: I’m doing this with Windows.  I’m not a Mac guy anymore.  There is a Mac version.  If you use it, I’d like to know what you think.  If you’re interested in what tech I’m using these days, check out my profile at gdgt.

Download and install Growl For Windows.  If you have applications that it supports on your computer, it will just find them.  There don’t seem to be many of these.  Most applications have some sort of plugin.  They have a list of apps on their site.  Here are the one’s I’m trying out:

• Growlbook: Facebook friend requests, messages, pokes, invites
• jweatherwatch: weather changes and changes in the forecast
• SkypeToGrowl: incoming Skype calls
• azgrowl: Azureus completed downloads

If you’re like me (and not everyone is) you have several computers doing various things around the house.  For example, the computer that does my Azureus downloads isn’t my main PC.  With Growl installed on several PCs, you can push notifications from one PC to another.  My downloading PC can send a notification to my main PC so I know when things happen without having to look.

I’ve also been trying Prowl.  Prowl is a Growl client for iPhone.  It costs $2.99.  You just set up an account at their site and they give you an API key.  You put that key in Growl and Growl will forward your alerts to your iPhone as push notifications.  Prowl also supports some web applications that don’t get forwarded from Growl.  I’m trying a Twitter one called Prey Fetcher.

I think this one will be quite useful.  I’m sure there are some more apps or plugins out there I might use.  I think what appeals to me most is that sending text messages or emails as notifications isn’t really using the right tool for the job.  The combination of a little pop-up in the corner of my screen and a push notification on my iPhone is an elegant way for me to keep up with what’s going on.

Do you know that option in Outlook / Thunderbird / your mail client of choice which you can enable, so you’re notified when a mail is read?  I don’t use it all the time, but when it’s absolutely important to me that a mail is read I might select that option.  It’s not that I think that my e-mails are of uber importance.  But when I get a notification that my mail is read, at least I know that I got my – usually quite important message – across.  If they decide to ignore that message, then that’s fine. At least they’ve read it.

But in the past few weeks, I’ve sent some mails for which I didn’t get the calming notification “that my mail has been read”.  I’ll tell you this right here, and right now: you annoy me.  Do you think I select that option for fun?  Hasn’t it occurred to you that I know whether you read my important e-mail?  If i send a mail in which I tell you that something has to be done ASAP, I need to know that you at least received the mail.  Unfortunately, that option doesn’t exist in Thunderbird.

The point is: if you get the request to notify me when you’ve read my mail, click “yes”’.  “No” is for losers that want me to refresh my inbox every five minutes, waiting for that confirmation to drop in my inbox.  You don’t want to be a loser, do you?

Note: I’m well aware that there are people that use that option for every e-mail they send, or that regularely abuse the “priority” setting.  I’m not one of those people. Click “YES” now!!

Note 2: if this post doesn’t make much sense: let’s just say that I’m a person who worries too much.  I REALLY need that confirmation sometimes

ok so moving a bit away from my previous post topics, heres something that ive come to notice concerning my iphone 3G..

as many of you know, i have an iphone, and i have jailbroken it on the iphone 3.1 software.. this, while allowing me access to several hacks like different sms tones and themes, has also allowed me to tweak my phone to my hearts content.. ive installed many promising programs and these have helped me get maximum workflow from my ageing iphone 3G. ive managed to install a swap file tweak to help with the 1 year old handsets low ram problems (compared to my 3gs, my iphone 3g is one laggy monster), and sbsettings drop down menu has given me access to controls that would take me a vital moments digging into a menu to change. the ability to free memory and quit processes, also backgrounder has allowed me to play some games while surfing the web.. its gotten to the point where even information from my calendar appointments, emails and even the weather can be made avaliable on my lockscreen. or even send an sms message while running a game or video, now how cool is that. (note these aren’t my phone images but theyre basically the same)

so now these tweaks are essential to my phones usage and i certainly hope apple implements atleast some of them in the new iphone 4.0. this software, we all know will be released alongside a new handset next year (basing this from the history of a new iphone and software bundle every year). but one shortcoming that apple definately needs to fix is the push notification system.

basic push notifications are great, and do help me get various pieces of information from say my favourite sports results, everyday (one tip, i subscribed to some news channels on twitter, so i just get one twitter push notification everytime a new headline pops up, much easier than having to see thru every app what the new headlines are). but once you get a whole load of them.. now thats where the problems arise. now heres where ive started to try and alleviate this problem.

I’ve managed to download this handy little thing (app or extension.. something) called GriP (only for jb iphone guys). though it is still in what i believe to be BETA (it was avaliable on an iphone source i had through cydia), it is awesome and will hopefully be replaced soon with an even better version (apparently called inotifyex – which im eagerly awaiting, hopefuly it fixes what im whining about hehe).

it is basically like the mac application Growl but for the iphone (much like the paid app store app prowl), and allows me to change and customise that annoying large push popup in the middle of the screen. it notifies me with a little popup instead of the push message, and it can also be set to notify me of new emails aswell. i can change the colour, size and position of the popup and even choose if it is collapsible or not. while it does give me this the customisable option for the popup, the ability to control what it notifies me of and the ability to be non-obtrusive and use very little resources, it still suffers from the iphone push problem as i like to call it. (below – elert – a similar program but only for email, & GriP in action)

with a large number of push notifications being pushed to the iphone, push messages that were previously on the phone get overwritten with another incomming alert. now say you have 4 pushes coming from say, facebook (hopefully push will be implemented in facebook 3.1) . you’d only see one notification while your facebook app would have 4 badges on it. now this isnt that bad if say some of the push apps were on the app page you were currently in but what if they weren’t?

how would you know the had an alert if say another alert came through and overwrote the notification on your screen?

now i’ve discovered a tweak on the net (with some digging) and now it has been packaged by someone and released through cydia, the GriP notification sbsettings toggle. This toggle lets you go through your GriP (push) notifications, even the previous ones that were ignored or overwritten, and access them. i use this alot to access my notifications (yes i get alot as i have push twitter) but another inherent problem with GriP is when you are notified, your alert fades away after a maximum of 10 seconds.. ( i kno theres the ’sticky’ turned on option, but i dont want ALL my notifications up on my screen…) that it piles up the notifications on your screen and after alot of them they make your screen look ugly and you have to dismiss them one by one..

If you miss the alert and it dissapears or say you have more notifications that can fit on the screen, how would you know you got that particular one in the first place?

What we need is atleast an icon on the statusbar that notifies us of a push message or a whole load of them, much like notifier icons for jailbroken iphones. this could possibly also include a counter or something similar? would this be possible?

This would be great, and if an iphone jailbreak developer saw this, id gladly ask you make one. but what most of us that have noticed this problem (including some blogs that helped me become aware of it aswell) will want is for Apple to implement an elegant solution (maybe attach it as drop down like sbsettings), much like Androids window shade or the palm pres notification area…

(and alot of people will definately see this when facebook push is introduced)

after that, with a little visual tweaking, hopefully it doesnt look toyish like androids interface… and a couple of crazy new features that apple may probably throw in, then the phone would be perfect in my opinion=)

You’ll be standing in the shower, lathering up  when Chantal, your holographic computer controlled AI partner, informs you in a cool voice you have a new email. How splendid, it must be the office letting you know there is no work today! “Anything else?” You ask; “Negative” her electronically synthesized voice responds.

Over at TINYenormous they’ve made this dream come true – minus the holographic computer controlled AI partner bit. Rather its simply a physical email notification system consisting of an LED and Arduino with some python code. We like the concept but prefer our Google Desktop with Gmail setup instead. Perhaps by using a small wireless server and rechargeable batteries, it could make a great dinner table centerpiece notifying you of the latest email. How simple, or how complicated would you make a setup?

Twitter annonce qu’il est en train de tester une nouvelle manière d’annoncer les nouveaux tweets. C’est uniquement valable pour l’interface Web puisque les applications tierces ont une mise à jour automatique.

Ainsi, on pourra connaitre le nombre de nouveaux tweets depuis le dernier rafraichissement de la page. Cela fonctionne de la même manière que la recherche qui affiche les nouveaux résultats, une fois que vous avez cliquez sur le bouton, les nouveaux tweets s’affichent avec le même type de flux.

Bien que ce ne soit pas une évolution majeure, elle est vraiment utile pour ceux qui utilisent la version Web de Twitter. Je dirais même que cette option devrais être étendue aux replies, aux messages directs et aux retweets. C’est déjà le cas de Facebook qui rend la navigation plus confortable.

Bien que Twitter fait des tests limités, on espère que cela va être disponible pour tous les utilisateurs dans les prochaines semaines.

Twilight’s official Amazon store has now added an feature where they have now added the option of e-mail alerts for whenever The Twilight Saga:  New Moon, Eclipse & Breaking Dawn movies are ready for pre-order!

Even though The Twilight Saga:  Breaking Dawn hasn’t even started filming yet, let alone even been confirmed 100%, they have already added an alert for whenever the Blu-Ray & DVD is ready for purchase!  This is great!

I, for one, have already subscribed to them all just to make sure I’m notified when they’re available.  Make sure you do the same and sign up, too– after all, you’ll need to be ready for your next Twilight-related party!!  :)

I dont know about everyone else but for some reason I just found the notification system really annoying with my Ubuntu setup, after struggling with a few files and settings finally was able to get it all disabled.

Here is a quick how-to in case someone wants to disable/enable it….

For disabling use the following:

sudo mv /usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.freedesktop.Notifications.service
/usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.freedesktop.Notifications.service.disabled

To re-enable it:

sudo mv /usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.freedesktop.Notifications.service.
disabled /usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.freedesktop.Notifications.service

Oh ya, selain itu koneksi internet juga menjadi salah satu alasan saya berhenti ngeblog saat itu. Baru sebulan terakhir ini saya memasang kembali koneksi internet baru, setelah sebelumnya saya putus. Selama ini, saya lebih sering “nongkrong” di situs-situs jejaring sosial, semacam facebook maupun plurk. Dan bodohnya, saya tidak tahu persis hal-hal berguna apa yang saya lakukan di sana, selain ngupdate status dan bermain MafiaWars

Blog ini juga sengaja saya buat baru karena saya menyukai segala sesuatu yang baru (mobil baru, rumah baru, … , pacar baru ), karena sebelumnya, blog saya ada disini. Selain, alamatnya yang susah diinget *padahal ini juga susah*, saya juga mengganti username dari Ordinary Kid menjadi Nikias. Nama ini berasal dari bahasa Yunani (Greek) yang memiliki arti “kemenangan”. Nikias konon merupakan jenderal perang Yunani saat perang Peloponnesian melawan bangsa Sparta. Selain itu, nama ini kedengarannya juga cukup bagus.

Sebenarnya banyak hal yang ingin diceritakan selama setahun belakangan. Ya, cukup sekian. Mudah-mudahan selebrasi kali ini bukan hanya omong kosong.

Saya benar-benar kembali!
