Destination Paris!

Marshall and I wanted to start our vacation in Paris because our friends and co-workers were performing in a show with Catherine Lara (solo violinist). The music is beautiful and the show (produced by Dragone and directed by Giuliano Peparini) is spectacular. But more about that later.

Day One

Back to the beginning. Marshall and I took the train from Brussels to Paris after Emily and Mike left to fly back to the USA. We arrived at Gare du Nord and set off to our friend’s apartment nearby where we would stay for a few days. We were a little tired from the fire incident the night before and decided to explore the surrounding neighborhood on foot and leave the more adventurous exploration for the coming days. We found a nice park with some cute duck-like birds and a gazebo thingy with a good view.

A lovely view of Sacre Coeur and the evening sky

A tired Marshall takes in the view

Day Two

The next day (Sunday 21 June) we managed to be much more adventurous. We were fortunate enough to have arrived in Paris just in time for the Fete de la Musique. Live music in the street, live music in the parks, live music everywhere and all the time. Each corner we turned, we encountered another free concert. Reggae, doo-wop, marching band, pan flutes, DJs spinning. You name it, it was somewhere waiting to be discovered.

Our first stop was the Hospital Hotel Dieu. Part hospital, part hotel, this building is located right next to Notre Dame cathedral and has a lovely courtyard with a beautiful garden. We sat and listened to the music for a while and then I spotted a smurf at the other side of the garden.

Papa?

Read more about the Hospital and the statue here. The site includes links to photos of various other costumes this statue has worn throughout the years.

Anyway, after the Hospital we headed past the Notre Dame du Paris across the bridge (Pont au Double) and to the Jardin du Luxembourg. We passed more music of course and stopped a while to listen to each group.

The World Famous Notre Dame du Paris - pretty, isn't she?

After our snack, Aya, Marshall and I headed to the Eiffel Tower to enjoy the surrounding green area, eat a baguette (so very very French of us) and lay in the sunshine.

Day Three

Day Four

Our last day in the lovely city of Paris! After days of outdoor wandering, Marshall and I decided to go indoors and see some art at the Musee d’Orsay. The museum was originally built as a train station, but as train technology developed, the building could not accommodate the newer larger trains. Now the building is home to thousands of paintings and sculptures as well as furniture and a scale model of the Palais Garnier (opera house).

A view from the roof of Musee d'Orsay

After the museum, we met Lionel, Cecilia, Sita (all Dragone folk) and Sita’s parents for dinner before the show. Cecilia introduced us to a drink called a Monaco which is beer and grenadine. It is bright red and quite sweet (even sweeter than a Crepe Citron).

Finally, it was showtime at the Palais des Sports. The show was beautiful and new acts (including a hand to hand act featuring Michal and Pawel; a flamenco solo for Ana and a contortion act) had been added since the original production in Belgium. It was great to see our friends in action and great to hear the music live. See photos here and here (scroll down). Congrats to all on a great show.

We went out for drinks on the Champs Elysees following the performance.

About a year ago I had planned with Mrs Lyons, the PT of Art in Notredame Secondary, to set up an individual art department website. Visiting the school during Holidays we set up several ’sets’ to use as a menu for the project. I also had plans to make the site look more realistic, without cleanly designed buttons, tables and the usual internet hocus pocus… just to make it look more ‘arty’.

On one hand y0u have those like Sen. Arlen Specter, whose sole principle has long been the preservation of his taxpayer-funded “job”, and men like Obama, whose stated principles are extremely elastic as a cover for the redistributive justice he envisions in his socialist utopia.

Then there are people such as Mary Ann Glendon, who declined to allow Notre Dame to present her with its treasured Laetare Medal, in order to quell the furor over a Catholic institution having invited the most pro-abortion absolutist president in history to speak at commencement and receive an honorary degree. Her letter is a model of dignified rebuttal and concern.

Another such is Andrew McCarthy, who turned down the invitation to participate in the May 4 roundtable meeting the President’s Task Force on Detention Policy is convening with current and former prosecutors involved in international terrorism cases. His letter is the most elegant smackdown of Obama’s stand on terrorism and on criminalizing politics you are ever likely to read.

As I said in a previous post, words do matter. But principles matter even more, because without them, your words are hollow carriers of your ambition, not bullets of truth.

S2 from Notredame where given the chance to try an Exquisite Corpse on my last day at the school. The game requires you to draw an image that has links to another image. You pass on the links, hiding the image you’ve drawn and then someone draws another picture using the links and then leaving their own on the opposite side. This continues until the last person, they then finish off the image.

This forms a huge flowing picture when played by lots of people, but can still be as fun if played by two or three people. The game can also be played electronically by emailing the links.

Below is a stop animation (filmed by taking shot after shot on a camera) that was completed as part of a curriculum for excellence in Notredame Secondary School. A curriculum for excellence is changing the way teachers have to teach, involving the pupils more in group tasks and innovative unit ideas. The short film below was conceived, created and filmed by the pupils. Mrs Lyons and myself supervised along with Bill the technician, though we cannot take any credit for the work shown.

The film is about the dangers of drinking and was made by the 3 pupils named in the short.

forse veniva dalle sponde dello stesso fiume.

May seems the perfect time of the year to visit Paris. If you are lucky, you might enjoy great weath

May seems the perfect time of the year to visit Paris. If you are lucky, you might enjoy great weather, and if you are a photographer, you might come home with more shots featuring Parisians than tourists. Go in July or August, and all bets are off.

That peculiar afternoon, after splurging on a whole box of Pepitos (French cookies most excellent), I atoned for my gluttony by taking a vigorous walk on the “Quais de la Seine.”

The bicycle you see on the photograph is a Velib. In July 2007, the City of Paris for ecological and health reasons inaugurated a new service of bike self-service. It offers stations located about every .2 miles and more than 20,000 bikes. The service is free for the first 30 minutes, then you pay a modest fee. Owning a bike in Paris exposes you to the following hazard:

Unfortunately a very common scene in Paris: the remains of a bicycle dutifully chained to a sturdy structure. Renting a bike seems more reasonable now, doesn’t it? Tourists may also use the service under the form of short-term subscriptions. I, myself, had to walk to expiate the Pepitos but the whole idea seemed lovely anyway.

Why on earth would you read the paper at the office when you can do so Quai du Louvre? Really.

A musician Pont du Carroussel. Notice the couple in the background. The beer in the foreground.

Why restrict your knitting activities to the fireside when you can produce a Seine-inspired sock?

And why wouldn’t you convert your barge into a beautiful two masted sailboat?

A timeless sight

Impossible to circumvent: Notredame

The attention to detail in Paris is fascinating.

Nothing better in the world than to make out behind the Cathedral

By this time, I am so pooped from atoning for my sins that I allow myself to take the metro. There is just about enough time to go buy another box of cookies…

I have recently had the chance to look back at my past 3 years of Secondary School teaching and browse my way through most of the fantastic work that’s been produced in that time. Whether that be through photos or actual work that is on display in my home, there are a lot of pieces that, even I, can’t believe they were created by students rather than professionals. One of my favourite sketches of all time is the work below by Agnes (S3 from Notredame High).

Agnes had very fine slender fingers and so her beautifully sketched drawing of her hand reminded me of the work by Klimt or Schiele. She could not see the beauty in her style and found no great pleasure in drawing or Art in general, so it’s amazing that she had such an elegant style and observant eye. I had stored this piece inside an art book to keep it flat, so it was an absolute delight to re-discover it.

I will have to buy a nice thick black frame for it over the weekend and show it off on a wall like it deserves, but until then, I thought it would be apt to award it ‘Artwork of the Week’.
