The most recent album from NoTwist is the soundtrack to the Hans-Christian Schmid motion picture ‘Sturm’. Released September 2009 the album consists of hypnotic ambient pieces which just seem to hang unsuspended in space.

Slow electronic swells and piano loops combine with xylophone, glockenspiel, accordion and violin to produce a truly hypnotic experience.

Siamo a quota troppi caffè, troppe sigarette e poca voglia di parlare. Sveglia prima che Bologna si svegliasse ho bevuto il primo giù in cortile, sulla panchina subito all’entrata. Cercavo un po’ di luce, un po’ di aria e comincio davvero a credere che questa casa sia divenuta troppo stretta, troppo buia e troppo mia. Ho guardato nella strada, attraverso le grate del cancello, tutto era ancora troppo immobile e ho ringraziato Dio per essermi svegliata così presto. Tra pochi minuti quella strada sarà piena di macchine e gente che corre e ringrazio anche di aver una stanza che si affaccia nel retro del cortile. Non sentirò i clacson e le frenate, non sentirò la fretta altrui e le parole. Tutte quelle che non sempre vuoi sentire. Capita ogni volta che sento che sto per stringere qualcosa. Sento quello e smetto di parlare. Chiudo i ponti con l’esterno e mi concentro sullo slancio. Lascio il mondo fuori anche se non sempre è quello che vorrei. Vorrei riuscire a viver più cose nello stesso frangente, render partecipi gli altri della forza e la paura di quello slancio ma non ho mai imparato a farlo. O sono dentro o sono fuori e le vie di mezzo mi confondono, non mi piacciono. Sono questi i momenti in cui tendo sempre a rivalutare tutto, quel che voglio e quel che no. Ciò che credo sia importante e quel che invece mi allontana dalla meta, mi distrae trascinandomi in problematiche senza senso che in realtà non mi appartengono. Sono questi i momenti in cui scelgo chi sta dentro e chi sta fuori, chi cammina con me e chi è libero di andare chè la vita bussa forte e io, alla mia, ho già risposto. Sento la durezza salire piano e non sopporto le cose che me la tirano fuori. Guardo al tempo appena trascorso e lo viviseziono in un secondo, il tempo di un caffè, con la rapidità che ho sempre avuto nello scegliere una strada. Ho sempre scelto sola e ogni scelta la rifarei, tale e quale a come è stata. Ho scelto di partire e poi restare. Ho scelto gli studi politici e poi quelli legali, di insegnar ad altri la bellezza del latino che ricordavo io e lo splendore che si sbriglia in ogni ragionamento filosofico sulla miseria e la forza di quel che siamo. Ho visto crescere così ragazzini e ho ritrovato in loro parole mie fino a commuovermi, li ho visti approdar all’università e poi mostrarmi un libretto, cadere e risalire con negli occhi il suono della forza che a volte pare mia. Mi son fusa nella vita di tutti quelli che ho incontrato, li ho lasciati scivolare nei miei giorni perchè sentissero la normalità e la semplicità della vita stessa. Il silenzio e l’energia, la debolezza e poi la forza. Perchè continuassero a chiedersi perchè? e a stupirsi per ogni singolo abbraccio, chè nulla è dovuto e il rispettto altrui presuppone il comprenderlo, il tenerlo bene in mente. Mille cose tengo bene in mente io, sempre e, tra queste, il non pretendere mai, mai dagli altri, prender solo quel che han voglia di darmi e ringraziare, dentro, per averlo avuto. Ho imparato ad osservare per capire e fino a tal punto che, a voltre, ti basta uno sguardo per sentir la vita altrui e ogni singolo pensiero come quando sai, che se volessi, potresti colpire duro ed affondare e comunque non lo fai. Risparmi il fiato chè ognuno ha sua strada e confidi nel fatto che prima o poi il conto arriverà, arriva sempre e ti auguri che molti intorno a te abbiano fatto in tempo a costruir mura di difesa. Affondi piano in un pensiero e lasci che scivoli nel ricordo, come tutte le cose che hai lasciato andare chè era tempo di partire. Pensi alle cose che ti sono state dette e provi a riordinarle, pensi alla libertà che il mondo si è sempre preso nei tuoi confronti e a quella che gli hai concesso soltanto tu. Pensi ai volti che hai incrociato per la strada e a quelli che hai fermato nella vita e poi ancora nel ricordo. Pensi al fatto che ogni singola persona sia importante ma nessuna fondamentale e pensi a chi crede possa esser il contrario, di gente che conosci da quando sei bambino e cerca ancora persone su cui poggiar la vita stessa e di quanto stiano male nella ricerca spasmodica di equilibri nei giorni altrui, come se questo fosse fattibile e normale. Pensi agli equilibri, quelli tuoi. Ricordi il tempo che è passato e ogni singola cosa letta, ogni film nella penombra e ogni mondo dentro il mondo. Ricordi strade come se ci fossi ancora dentro e ogni passo nella notte, ogni fiato trattenuto e l’amore sotto un faro. L’erba fredda sotto i piedi e una sciarpa regalata, quel primo regalo senza compleanno di una madre in quasi trent’anni e se la guardo mi stupisco ancora. La guardo e penso all’inverno che verrà, a quando la porterò con me e sotto ci sarà la sua collana, quelle piccole perle che ho scelto di portar con me perchè fosse lieve il peso dell’assenza e della vita, quelle sue. Penso ad un padre e alla sua poltrona, alle mille biblioteche in cui sempre mi portava e alle cose che mi leggeva aspettando poi un responso, alle domeniche passate con lui che guardava fuori da una finestra e mi insegnava la forza di una poesia perchè sentissi il dolore altrui e lo facessi mio, perchè carpissi ogni singolo pensiero nascosto nella scelta di una parola e poi una pausa, poi si voltava e mi chiedeva sorridendo:” E’ chiaro adesso?”. Penso alle volte in cui l’ho guardato di nascosto quando stanco, al buio, si perdeva nei pensieri tutti suoi e mi lasciava addosso quella strana sensazione di attesa, mi sentivo come Didi e Gogo che aspettano Godot, pur sapendo che tarda ad arrivare, pur sentendo dentro che mai succederà. Restavo lì, immobile, fin quando mi avvicinavo per chiedergli di dirmi qualcosa, qualunque cosa e lui rispondeva, quasi sempre, con le parole di Dante, mi guardava, da sopra le lenti degli occhiali, con lo sguardo di chi pensa “e allora vediamo che sai fare“ e intanto diceva: “Che Canto è?” o, alle volte in cui recitava una poesia e mi chiedeva se riuscivo a veder quello che vedeva lui. Ma io vedevo e sentivo prima lui nei versi che sceglieva, nelle pause che dava. Vedevo quel che nascondeva ai giorni e un po’ a se stesso. Sentivo le cose che mi confidava usando uomini e parole del passato e tornavam dagli altri che erano in cucina come se ci fossimo confidati e comunque ci eravamo capiti e tanto da finir per comunicare sempre così. Mi chiama, a volte, e usa ancora una poesia, io sorrido e gli rispondo in versi, basta quello per capirsi e narrarsi la paura, basta quello per smuovere un sorriso e riprendere la strada. Penso a tutto nel tempo di un caffè. Penso alla sintonia tra le menti che ho desiderato sempre poi, la stessa di allora, quella che ti scalda il cuore e ti dona forza per andare, ti permette di riconoscere alcune persone e di sentirle dentro in ogni istante, quella stessa sintonia di uno sguardo attraverso una tavolata o nell’abitacolo di un’auto, quella che supera il rumore intorno e trova un varco nello stesso. Spegne il tempo e le distanze, fissa gli occhi dentro gli occhi e vibra sottopelle. Vibra piano e ferma il tempo, ti culla in mezzo al mondo e poi ti lascia andare. Ti attraversa lievemente pur nello spazio di un frangente. Ti entra dentro e soffia piano. Ti entra dentro e muore piano.

E pensare che avevano iniziato con l'hardcore

(Nelle puntate precedenti: 2000 – Deftones, “White pony”; 2001 – Giardini di Mirò, “Rise and fall of academic drifting”)

Le brigate rosse nel 2002 ammazzano Marco Biagi. Abbandonato al proprio destino dal governo di allora, definito dopo la sua morte un rompicoglioni da un ministro della Repubblica, Biagi è diventato il simbolo di quella riforma del lavoro cui stava lavorando e che, probabilmente, se fosse stato in vita non avrebbe redatto nei termini che conosciamo. Nello stesso tempo, Sergio Cofferati chiama a raccolta tre milioni di persone contro l’abolizione dell’articolo 18. Io ero lì. Quello che è successo dopo: Cofferati segato dalla guida degli allora Ds, Biagi usato dalla destra come un’icona da presentare al proprio elettorato, lavoro sempre più precario, Claudio Scajola nuovamente ministro della Repubblica. Ce n’è abbastanza per lamentarsi di come sono andate le cose.

Proprio in quel periodo esce “Neon golden” dei tedeschi Notwist. Seguito di quello “Shrink” che aveva contribuito a far cambiare rotta alla band di Marcus Acher, nata hardcore punk – con qualche rimando al metal – e poi evoluta in qualcosa di diverso. Con “Neon golden” l’indietronica trova il suo punto più alto assieme a “Scary world theory” dei Lali Puna (sempre Acher in mezzo, non a caso). Puro modernariato musicale. Un’elettronica umana, troppo umana. Un folk gelido e desolato. Chip e silicio in comunione con valvole e sudore. Un lavoro che spinge più in là quanto è stato fatto dai Radiohead di “Kid A”. Un bestseller indie che ha fatto al pop quello che i Mogwai hanno fatto al rock. Bellissimo.

went to my audition today for the worship team at Seacoast church and it went almost perfect! i love being a part of worship teams. i love being a part of something bigger than myself. it’s such a rush and i rarely want it to stop. can’t wait to work with the rest of the team!

today’s song is Consequence by Notwist

you’re probably wondering “who the crap is that?” well i saw a flick called Push a few days ago and had a hard time believing that it didn’t have a soundtrack. it’s a sci-fi flick (or syfy for lame-o’s) about people with abnormal abilities being hunted by the government to become weapons. it’s based in Hong Kong and the music is awesome! this is my favorite song from the movie, it’s slow but it gets stuck with me. i love the chord progression and the subtle lyrics. it’s perfect after a long day of work or drama to relax. i love the music and the movie so you all should check out both! the music is a little harder to find, but the movie is awesome! and this is another great song to write to. i think i’m going to make a playlist of the songs that i find my muse to.

Mi capita molto spesso di dire, quando parlo con qualcuno e stiamo ascoltando musica, “ecco, questa è una di quelle canzoni che avrei tanto voluto comporre io, se avessi il talento”. E mi rendo conto che sono tante, sempre di più. L’altro giorno una mia amica mi ha chiesto di mandarle un’email con tutte queste benedette canzoni. Quelle che più di ogni altra scardinano ogni mia difesa emotiva e mi trasformano in un adolescente in guerra col mondo. Non sono tutte. Magari in seguito farò un aggiornamento.

Deftones, “Be quiet and drive (far away)”

Il bassista Chi Cheng è ancora in coma. Speriamo davvero che si riprenda. La canzone li vede ancora giovani, magri e ispirati. Dopo dodici anni continua a colpire al cuore. “Non m’importa dove, purché sia lontano da qui”.

dEUS, “Instant street”

I belgi dEUS sono stati per molto tempo la risposta europea più convincente allo strapotere angloamericano nella cultura pop moderna. Negli ultimi anni hanno un po’ perso furore e magia. “Instant street” è probabilmente tutto quello che deve essere un pezzo rock. Melodia, passione, intensità.

Nick Drake, “Pink moon”

Quando era vivo nessuno se lo filava, il povero Nick Drake. Poi hanno preso “Pink moon” e l’hanno usata per una pubblicità. Che chi l’ha vista ricorda con commozione. Perché avere la pelle d’oca mentre cercano di venderti un’automobile non è qualcosa che capita tutti i giorni. Quando si dice la colonna sonora. Se trasmettessero oggi lo spot butterei subito la mia Ypsilon ipocondriaca, che troppo spesso fa visita all’officina. E tornerei tra le braccia di mamma Volkswagen. Contento. Anche se con un pizzico di malinconia.

Smashing Pumpkins, “Obscured”

Ci sarebbe gran parte del repertorio dei Pumpkins da citare. Questa è una delle canzoni meno conosciute e più sottovalutate, anche da Corgan stesso. L’atmosfera è rarefatta, il crescendo è meraviglioso, il finale è inquieto. Bellissimo.

Brad, “Buttercup”

Un po’ volgarmente definiti side project dei Pearl Jam, per via della presenza di Stone Gossard. La voce di Shawn Smith è una delle più espressive del rock anni Novanta. Avrebbero meritato molto più di quanto hanno raccolto, i Brad.

Mansun, “Legacy”

“All relationships are emptying and temporary, life is wearing me thin, I feel so drained, my legacy, a sea of faces just like me, nobody cares when you’re gone”. Un gioiello scomparso dalla memoria della gente. Il vero inno del brit pop, giunto quando era troppo tardi. Nichilisti Mansun. Anche loro avrebbero meritato di più.

Red House Painters, “Katy song”

Questa non è una canzone. E’ struggimento.

Apostle Of Hustle, “Chances are”

Punta Raisi, Pensiero stupendo, la pioggia, i cannoli, la spiaggia, Sabrina, Fiz, Daniele e gli altri. Sembra una vita fa. In effetti lo è, a pensarci bene.

Shipping News, “Axons and dendrites”

In cinque minuti ribadisce la forza dell’indie rock. E’ una mano che stringe sempre più forte intorno al cuore, come a voler farlo sanguinare di emotività. Il video si sente male. L’impatto resta inalterato. Qui trovate la versione originale.

Averli visti dal vivo è stata una delle esperienze più intense della mia vita.

Broken Social Scene, “Almost crimes”

Sul palco sono la metà di mille. Non so cosa darei per essere in mezzo a questo mucchio selvaggio di chitarre, ritmo e bellezza.

PS: Sul web non ho trovato “Operation dragon” dei Three Second Kiss. Cercatelo, comunque. Probabilmente il pezzo noise rock più esaltante che sia mai stato composto.

Od Florki już się pewnie nie odczepimy. Tydzień temu Florka. W tym tygodniu Florka. To ona zagospodaruje nam feministyczny aspekt słodko-gorzkości w tym roku. Jeśli Państwo nie słyszało jeszcze Florki, to ja pozwolę sobie tutaj Państwu coś z niej przedstawić, co by się Państwo też mogło zakochać bez opamiętania.

Florence & the Machine “Dog Days Are Over”

Nowa płyta Röyksopp już w marcu. I choć singel nie wróży niczego dobrego, to jednak forma została utrzymana.

A potem odwiedziła nas diwa. Antoś wraca po ponad 4 latach przerwy. Czas, jaki dzieli The Crying Light od Am I a Bird Now, pozwala spojrzeć na nową jego płytę dystansem. Hegarty przestaje być dziwadłem, które przypadkiem dostało jedną z najważniejszych nagród świata (cyt. z kolegi, może sam się kiedyś przyzna). Przepracował swoje niedopasowanie, swoją odmienność, która czyni go wrażliwym i wyjątkowym. Na dalszy plan schodzą pytania o jego seksualność. Na The Crying Light artysta dzieli się swoimi wątpliwościami co do kondycji natury. Rozumianej nie tylko jako środowisko, w którym żyjemy (Another World, którym Antony żegna się ze światem, który pędzi nieubłaganie ku zagładzie), ale również i relacje z najbliższymi (przejmujący hołd dla zmarłej matki Her Eyes Are Underneath The Ground, czy zapis tęsknoty za kochankiem, który odszedł w Aeon).

The Crying Light to dla Antony’ego również sprawdzian nowych możliwości. Wraz z uznanym muzykiem klasycznym, Nikiem Muhlym, przygotował aranżacje orkiestracyjne, które stanowią podstawę kompozycji zawartych na płycie. Co więcej, po raz pierwszy szansonista korzysta z gitary, z którą – jak sam twierdzi – wreszcie się przeprosił.

Artykuł o Antonym, wraz z pełną recenzją tej płyty, pojawi się w lutowym „Teraz Rocku”.

O Animalach i ich nowej płycie już pisałem. Stąd też tylko bonus – koncertowa wersja Brother Sport.

Wszystko wskazywało na to, że James pojawi się w żółtej koszulce lidera z napisem „luuzzer”. Z tą płytą próbuje się przebić już ponad 2 lata. Tym razem chyba powinno się udać: czasy dla wyrośniętych Harrych Potterów bardziej przyjazne, a wartość jego twórczości zwróciła uwagę i BBC 6 i XFm, gdzie No Surprise hasa po plejlistach. Dziennikarze klasyfikują jego twórczość jako folktronikę. Nie można prościej?

A James wywołał skojarzenia z tą oto klasyczną już dziś kompozycją – pamiętam, że poznałem tę piosenkę 10 lat temu, gdzieś w nocy, dzięki tej samej telewizji, z której urywek pojawia się poniżej.

Zespół przyjeżdża do Polski w maju, w Krakowie wystąpi w przedziwnym zestawie z Travisem.

Wczoraj doczepiłem do infomacji o ubiegłotygodniowej audycji linka do niej właśnie. Jeśli więc kogoś nie było tydzień temu, audycję można odsłuchać TU. Ponieważ dopiero rozkminiam system, postaram się, by audycje pojawiały się z mniejszym spóźnieniem.

I don’t necessarily buy into the notion that this album is overtly more accessible then previous releases. If you don’t like Sigur Rós, then you probably won’t like this one. However, if you are a fan, then you’ll love it.

The background story to this album gets trotted out with a tiresome degree of regularity. However, it goes to explain much of the weight and gravitas behind each song. Even though I’m suffering from some type of Bon Iver fatigue syndrome – due entirely to overplay, I may add – this remains the stand out album of last year.

Before the kNEWs came about there was knewit06.com, album reviews for ARTISTdirect, concert coverage for Hot 97, and internships at Jive Records and Iron Horse Music Group. Even with my recent forays into other industries I always keep my ears tuned into the most inspirational and emerging acts in the music biz today.

# 1: Vampire Weekend : Vampire Weekend

VW/VW came out last winter but was perfectly summer. The band’s moniker doesn’t match their sound. The lead singer dresses preppy, then acts punk. Whatever, doesn’t matter. A flawless album beginning to end, it traverses genres not in the cool until they said so. It references Lil Jon, says Fuck exactly five time, and exudes privilege . Here’s to hoping they don’t sophomore slump.

# 2: Lil Wayne : Tha Carter III

Lil Wayne’s crazy, he says so himself. He’s a martian. He’s a VD. He’s also become a great rapper. And while he sold a guest verse to more albums in ‘08 then most rappers do in their entire career, The Carter III was his baby. See: Cover Art. This is the disc that made many a fool of those that said Wheezy couldn’t step away from mix tapes and cough syrup to put out a commercial product.

# 3: Tokyo Police Club : Elephant Shell

The debut album from these clever Canadian’s landed them on a state-side stadium tour with Weezer. That’s because it’s damn good. It’s a streamlined package of poppy, jagged, and morose. It’s makes you want to jump around and think at the same time. And I tried doing that, it’s pretty tough.

# 4: Colin Meloy : Colin Meloy Sings Live!

The Decemberists singer pleases himself a little too much with his crowd banter, but makes good with soft strums and songs like story lines. Packing personal oldies, obscure covers, and fan favorite into this live set list keeps it interesting.

# 5: MGMT : Oracular Spectacular

Equally weird and wonderful. Doubly fun and frightening. I have yet to meet someone who doesn’t have a passionate comment about this duo. A perfect disc for rocking out with and electronic twist.
