Agriflu, manufactured by Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics in Siena, Italy, was approved for people ages 18 years and older to prevent the seasonal flu (influenza virus subtypes A and B). The symptoms of H1N1 are similar to those of regular seasonal flu. Whether it is caving to pharmaceutical pressure or what, America now has Agriflu added to its list of acceptable vaccines, further opening the door to allow Novartis to produce variated swine flu or some other pandemic vaccine in the future.  The U.S. requires that H1N1 manufacturers be licensed for the seasonal flu first- which is why Baxter Pharmaceutical and others were not permitted to have access to millions of patients in America.  Seeing as there is no seasonal flu so to speak of, my antenna are up.

Novartis of Switzerland is expected to supply nearly half of the vaccines in the U.S. and applied for it’s Swine Flu vaccine patent on November 6, 2006.  The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) accepted and granted the application,  US 20090047353 for a “Split Influenza Vaccine with Adjuvants” in February 2009, just about the time the flu was beginning to spread.  Celtura is the Novel H1N1 Swine Flu Vaccine produced by Novartis. I take exception to the use of the term LIKE VIRUS.  LIKE WHAT THE F**k U TALKING ABOUT?  Which one of the “like viruses” would be nice to be identified to the citizens of the U.S. on behalf of it’s govenernment, don’t ya think?  Why would two year old viruses still be the most prevelent in these vaccines when since April we’ve all known H1N1 was going to do the most damage?

The FDA announced the formation of a Transparency Task Force to recommend ways to improve the openness and transparency of the agency’s information. In 2008, Dr. Paul L. Herrling, Head of Corporate Research at Novartis and Chairman of the Board of the Novartis Institute for Tropical Diseases (NITD), proposed a plan to fund and manage the development treatments for the neglected diseases.  His plan, called the Fund for R&D in Neglected Diseases (FRIND) (published in Global Forum Update on Research for Health Volume 5 [Global Health Update]) would provide funding and management of the preclinical development and clinical testing of treatments in the “pipeline” now managed by academic institutions, product development partnerships (PDPs), and companies.  Funds would come from foundations and governments and would be granted to projects incrementally based on results.  “Portfolio Management Teams” similar to those of pharmaceutical companies would allocate funds (and perhaps provide guidance) to projects.  The net result would be better allocation of resources and decrease in the later stage attrition.

Practically, implementing FRIND faces the hurdle of persuading the entrenched interests to cede control and the donors to fund yet-another potentially huge bureaucracy.  FRIND is a good idea and I wish Dr. Herrling success but also propose a more modest effort as a complement to FRIND.  I propose to create a low-cost service for anyone or organization intending to develop a product for a global health disease (treatment, diagnostic, or vaccine) and needing to:

-establish proof of concept;

-generate data to justify continued funding; or

-create sufficient value in the product to attract a licensee.

Peloton Partnering, named after the group of bicycle racers who benefit from each other’s momentum, will be a web-based community of life sciences industry professionals interested in global health and wiling and able to contribute some time to advancing global health product development. The initial aim of the network will be to match those participants with product development needs to those with product development expertise (e.g., design and execution of POC experiments, ADME/tox, clinical trials) or with business development or sales and marketing expertise to collaborate on specific projects pro bono.  In my experience, several hours of thoughtful and constructive advice can be invaluable to small organizations with limited resources.

Of course, there are wrinkles to work out, e.g.,

-confidentiality (there is none, just old-fashion trust);

-liability (none permitted);

-credibility of participants (reliance on peer-recommendation);

-performance metrics (mostly subjective);

-communication across distance and possibly cultures (video conferencing?); and

-donated time really isn’t free (maybe donors will get social responsibility credits for their organizations).

There are probably other snags I haven’t thought of.  The Peloton Partnering effort would be grass-roots-based and low-budget and a complement to the top-down, big-budget approach of FRIND.

The success of volunteers coaching and mentoring businesses is well-established through the success of programs like SCORE (SCORE) which matches retired executives with US small businesses, university-based venture mentoring programs like MIT’s Venture Mentoring Service (MIT VMS) and regionally-based programs like Innovate St. Louis (Innovate STL).  The Lemelson Foundation has an international entrepreneur mentoring program (Recognition and Mentoring Program; RAMP) and the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance has a social venture mentoring program (Venture Well).  I have also heard about, but have few details for, a proposed network for supporting companies of the “global south” that has a mentoring component (the Global Health Accelerator as described by Frew et al. in Health Affairs (“A Business Plan To Help The ‘Global South’ In Its Fight Against Neglected Diseases;” Health Affairs). There is also an on-line collaborative community of academic researchers for drug discovery for neglected disease, the Tropical Disease Initiative (TDI).

Peloton Partnering would be only a part of addressing the challenge of developing and delivering affordable global health products but it seems to me doable and worthwhile.  I’ll be test-marketing the idea over the next months and will appreciate hearing any comments.

Contratto tra Novartis e il Ministero del Lavoro, della Salute e delle Politiche Sociali per la fornitura del vaccino Focetria contro la pandemia A/H1N1

Una delle clausole del contratto – che, ricordiamoci sempre, concede a Novartis l’immunità legale per le cause di risarcimento danni -  era che lo stesso rimanesse riservato:

Per “informazioni riservate” si intende (i) qualsiasi tipo di informazioni verbali, visive o scritte concernenti il Prodotto o le attività commerciali della controparte inviate da una Parte all’altra in conformità, osservanza o nel rispetto delle disposizioni del Contrattto o da essa altrimenti ottenute a prescindere dal fatto che la natura riservata di tali informazioni fosse stata espressamente indicata o meno), e (ii) l’esistenza e i termini del Contratto.

Bene: adesso sappiamo (io che scrivo e voi che leggete) sia dell’esistenza del contratto, che dei suoi termini. E ora, che fare?

As of Februrary 2010 Novartis is to terminate its research collaboration agreement begun with Idera Pharmaceuticals Inc in May 2005. The aim of the collaboration was to discover, develop, and commercialize TLR9 agonists that are based on Idera’s proprietary IMO chemistry and identified as potential treatments for asthma and allergies.

Under the agreement, Idera received a US$4 million upfront license fee and in 2007 a US$1 million payment for an extension of the research collaboration. In March 2008 the research agreement was extended to December 2008 to allow for the progress of QAX935 (IMO-2134), a novel agonist of TLR9 identified in the collaboration, into human clinical trials. Idera received a US$1 million milestone payment f as a result of the initiation of the Phase 1 clinical study.

With the termination of the research collaboration in February 2010 Idera will regain all rights to IMO-2134 without any financial obligations to Novartis and will no longer be subject to restrictions on its right to develop its TLR-targeted compounds, including its TLR antagonists and TLR antisense oligonucleotides, for respiratory diseases.

Costa Rica will have the first 200,000 doses AH1N1 flu vaccine during the first week of December.

The announcement of the arrival of the first batch of vaccines to fight the influenza pandemic was made by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) to the Ministry of Health and it was confirmed by the deputy minister of health, Ana Morice.

She added that PAHO has also announced that Costa Rica will receive another batch with 250,000 doses of flu vaccine in January.

Costa Rica made the purchase of immunizations through the PAHO Revolving Fund.

Initially, the price for each vaccine was $7 (approximately ¢4000) but PAHO increased the price and now the country must pay $7.50 (about ¢ 4,275) per dose.  The total cost of the 450,000 vaccines is about ¢1.725 billion.  Vice Minister Morice said that she did not know the reason why the price for the vaccines increased.

The increase in vaccine unit price means that the country will have to pay about ¢115 million more to the Fund.  This amount does not include payment for shipping and customs clearance.

Morice said that the vaccines come in vials of ten doses each, which makes the lots cheaper than if they contained a single dose.

The vaccines that Costa Rica will receive are from Novartis pharmaceuticals, which some weeks ago conducted a clinical study on almost 800 Costa Ricans to try the effectiveness of the AH1N1 flu vaccine.

Although drug companies will make a donation of several thousand vaccines to poor countries through PAHO, Costa Rica did not qualify.

According to vice minister Morice, this exclusion is beneficial because each country receiving a donation must sign a document which will immunize the pharmaceuticals from any litigation in case there are any severe reactions in the population due to the vaccine  .

“Given those conditions, it is better if they do not give Costa Rica anything,” said Morice.

The 450,000 vaccines that the country will receive account for a quarter of the total doses (1.8 million) that the Ministry of Health wants.

According to  the vice minister, a maximum period of 48 hours will elapse from the moment the vaccines arrive to the beginning of the anti-flu campaign.

“The doses will have to be dispatched immediately once they are in customs so as not to break the cold chain (vaccines should be kept under refrigeration),” said the official.

However, the doses must pass a short quality test conducted by the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) on all drugs.

“However, since the vaccine is pretested, not much time will go by before it is distributed,” she said.

To move the process forward, the Ministry of Health and the CCSS in Costa Rica will request medical centers to identify patients with certain risk factors and they will be the ones who will first to receive the vaccine.

“Each local health center (EBAIS, clinics and hospitals) must identify how many people they have with risk factors such as asthma and diabetes and, based on these data, we will say:  ’First vaccinate these people, then others’,” commented Morice on how the campaign will be conducted.

Hopefully, this first vaccination will have positive results because, after having paid such a high cost and after having clashed with the pharmaceutical company, the best thing for all Costa Ricans would be for things to turn out well.

On November 25 2009 Novartis entered a licensing agreement with Incyte Corporation for exclusive rights to two oral targeted investigational therapies for patients with a range of life-threatening blood disorders and cancers that currently do not have effective treatment options. Under the agreement Novartis is to take responsibility for the future development of Incyte’s investigational JAK inhibitor, INCB18424, outside the US and for future development of an early-stage cmet inhibitor, INCB28060, globally.

Under the agreement Incyte is to receive an upfront payment of US$ 150 million and a first milestone payment of US$ 60 million for initiation of the European Phase III trial of INCB18424 that began in July 2009. The agreement covers ex-US commercialisation rights for the JAK inhibitor and global commercialisation rights for the cMET inhibitor. Each company is to cover the costs in their respective territories for the JAK inhibitor but will share the costs of collaborative studies equally. Incyte is also eligible for further development and commercialisation milestones payments of up to approximately US$1.1 billion and could receive tiered, double-digit royalty payments on future ex-US INCB18424 sales.

Novartis is to take responsiblility for all costs and activities for the cMET inhibitor after the Phase I clinical trial. After the first milestone, Incyte is eligible for additional payments based on achieving defined development and commercialization milestones and to receive royalties on future sales. Incyte has retained an option to co-develop and co-promote the cMET inhibitor in the US and to participate in the cMET inhibitor’s global development.

Tuy nhiên, để xác định đâu là một công ty lớn, cổ phiếu của nó sẽ có giá trị trên thị trường, bạn cần phải căn cứ vào năm dấu hiệu phân biệt quan trọng sau đây:

1. Có thương hiệu nổi tiếng và uy tín trên thị trường

Trước hết, bạn hãy nghĩ đến các thương hiệu nổi tiếng trên thế giới mà chủ sở hữu của nó đã đầu tư vào sản xuất trong đất nước bạn, dưới dạng các công ty 100% vốn nước ngoài hay các công ty liên doanh. Ví dụ như General Electric, Microsoft, Apple, Marlboro…, đó là những thương hiệu được xếp hạng trong 40 thương hiệu nổi tiếng nhất trên thế giới, theo sự bình chọn và đánh giá của Tổ chức tư vấn thương hiệu Interbrand. Dấu hiệu này rất quan trọng, đảm bảo sự thành công trong kinh doanh của công ty này trên đất nước của bạn, và hiển nhiên cổ phiếu của họ chắc chắn sẽ có giá trị trên thị trường. Nếu bạn quyết định đầu tư vào cổ phiếu của những công ty này, mức độ rủi ro sẽ rất ít.

2. Kinh doanh những sản phẩm và dịch vụ có ý nghĩa

Bạn hãy tìm kiếm những công ty mà sản phẩm, dịch vụ của chúng thực sự là nhu cầu thiết yếu và là sở thích của người tiêu dùng. Các công ty dược phẩm: ví dụ  như hãng dược phẩm khổng lồ Novartis của Thụy Sĩ chẳng hạn, những sản phẩm do công ty này sản xuất ra như thuốc bổ Calcium và dầu nong… bán đắt như tôm tươi. Bất kể khách hàng là người lắm tiền nhiều của hay không dư dả lắm, họ đều sẵn sàng mua những sản phẩm như vậy.

Tại sao vậy? Bởi kinh tế ngày một tăng trưởng đã khuyến khích người dân có nhu cầu chăm sóc sức khỏe cao hơn. Đồng hành với sự thịnh vượng kinh tế là xu hướng ngồi làm việc tại chỗ trước màn hành vi tính nhiều hơn. Trẻ em cũng không thoát khỏi xu hướng này. Các nhân tố đó sẽ dẫn đến tình trạng béo phì, tăng huyết áp hay tiểu đường, khiến nhu cầu sử dụng thuốc gia tăng.

Bên cạnh đó, các hãng khác như Coca-Cola hay Yum!… cũng là chủ sở hữu những sản phẩm rất được người tiêu dùng ưa chuộng, và chắc chắn chúng sẽ còn được mua nhiều.

3. Thu nhập chắc chắn và đáng tin cậy, tăng trưởng trong bán hàng và lợi nhuận chính đáng

Tức là trước khi quyết định đầu tư vào cổ phiếu của một công ty, bạn nên xem xét ba vấn đề cơ bản của công ty là: thu nhập; lượng hàng bán ra trên thị trường và lợi nhuận.

- Về thu nhập, bạn có thể sử dụng một số chỉ tiêu sau để đánh giá sự chắc chắn và đáng tin cậy của công ty:

+ Chỉ số thu nhập trên một đơn vị cổ phiếu – EPS (Earning per Share): thu nhập dòng hay lợi nhuận sau thuế có thể được xem xét bằng tổng lợi nhuận hay xét trên một đơn vị cổ phiếu gọi là chỉ số EPS. Một công ty có sự gia tăng về tốc độ tăng trưởng thu nhập khi tốc độ tăng trưởng thu nhập của quý sau cao hơn quý trước. Một cổ phiếu tốt, có tốc độ gia tăng về tăng trưởng thu nhập cao hơn so với ba hay bốn quý trước. Tăng trưởng của chỉ số thu nhập ít nhất là 25% so với cùng quý của năm trước. EPS hàng năm của cổ phiếu tốt ít nhất phải tăng trưởng 25% so với ba năm trước.

Ví dụ: Tập đoàn Johnson & Johnson có thu nhập tăng trong 73 năm liên tiếp, có tốc độ tăng đột biến tiền lãi cổ phần (cổ tức) trong 44 năm liên tiếp, và công khai yết thị thu nhập kiếm được tăng trong 21 năm liên tiếp.Theo bạn, cổ phiếu của tập đoàn này có thực sự hấp dẫn không?

+ Chỉ số thị giá chia cho thu nhập của mỗi cổ phần – P/E là một trong những chỉ số phân tích quan trọng quyết định đầu tư chứng khoán của nhà đầu tư. Thu nhập từ cổ phiếu sẽ có ảnh hưởng quyết định đến giá thị trường của cổ phiếu đó. Hệ số P/E đo lường mốiquan hệ giữa giá thị trường (Market Price – PM) và thua nhập của mỗi cổ phiếu (EPS) và được tính như sau:

P/E= PM/EPS.

Thông thường, nhiều người cho rằng nên chọn mua những cổ phiếu có P/E thấp vì theo họ những cổ phiếu có chỉ số này cao là đắt và không nên mua. Nhưng trên thực tế, những cổ phiếu tốt nhất thường có chỉ số này rất cao.

Hệ số P/E rất có ích cho việc định giá cổ phiếu. Giả sử bạn đang muốn mua một cổ phiếu hiện tại chưa được giao dịch trên thị trường, nhưng chưa biết mua với giá bao nhiêu là hợp lý. Nếu bạn biết thu nhập của công ty này (EPS), bạn có thể lấy nó nhân với chỉ số P/E được công bố trên thị trường giao dịch chứng khoán của nhóm cổ phiếu tương tự như cổ phiếu này, bạn sẽ xác định được giá của cổ phiếu mà bạn muốn mua.

- Về sự tăng trưởng bán hàng: Đây là chỉ tiêu quan trọng nhất để đo lường một công ty có sức mạnh hay không và là nhân tố chính của tăng trưởng. Khi chọn lựa cổ phiếu tốt hãy tìm công ty có tốc độ bán hàng mạnh để làm tiền đề cho tăng trưởng thu nhập. Tiêu chí để xác định công ty có tăng trưởng bán hàng tốt nếu ba quý gần nhất có sự tăng lượng hàng bán lớn hơn hoặc bằng 25% so với quý gần nhất trước đó.

- Về lợi nhuận: có thể đánh giá trên hai chỉ tiêu:

+ Lợi nhuận ròng: đánh giá tỷ lệ chuyển doanh thu thành thu nhập. Trên quan điểm của nhà đầu tư, nên tìm những công ty có sự tăng về tỷ lệ lợi nhuận ròng/doanh thu. Con số này càng lớn thì có nghĩa công ty đang có xu hướng quản lý và các hoạt động khác tốt lên. Tiêu chí để xác định cho chỉ tiêu này là lợi nhuận trước thuế ít nhất đạt 18% doanh thu. Yêu cầu lợi nhuận sau thuế luôn đạt 10% trở lên.

+ Lợi nhuận trên vốn chủ sở hữu (ROE): Hệ số này phản ánh mức thu nhập ròng trên vốn cổ phần của cổ đông.

ROE= Lợi nhuận ròng/Vốn cổ đông hay giá trị tài sản ròng hữu hình.

Hệ số này thường được các nhà đầu tư phân tích để so sánh với các cổ phiếu khác nhau trên thị trường. Thông thường, hệ số thu nhập trên vốn cổ phần càng cao thì các cổ phiếu càng hấp dẫn, vì hệ số này cho thấy cách đánh giá khả năng sinh lời và các tỷ suất lợi nhuận của công ty khi đem so sánh với hệ số thu nhập trên vốn cổ phần của các công ty khác.

4. Chịu sự quản lý và điều hành bởi các nhà lãnh đạo tài ba

Đây là một trong những tiêu chuẩn và dấu hiệu khá quan trọng mà bạn nên tìm hiểu trước khi quyết định đầu tư. Nếu nhà lãnh đạo giỏi, công ty sẽ phát triển đúng hướng và sẽ là yếu tố đảm bảo sự thành công trong đầu tư vào cổ phiếu của bạn. Thậm chí, nếu chẳng may công ty rơi vào tình trạng gay go, trước bờ vực của sự phá sản, nhưng nếu được điều hành và dẫn dắt của một nhà lãnh đạo tài ba, rất có thể nó sẽ vượt qua được khó khăn, quay về đúng hướng.

Richard Parson – Giám đốc điều hành của Time Warner là một trong những nhà lãnh đạo tài giỏi như thế. Ông đã làm được một điều kỳ diệu: giá cổ phiếu của hãng gần như đã quay về mức trước khi rơi vào khủng hoảng, trước khi ông về nắm quyền. Sau cuộc sáp nhập khủng hoảng với AOL trong năm 2001, giá cổ phiếu Time Warner đã rớt tự do. Thế nhưng trong năm 2005, Parson đã dần kéo công việc kinh doanh của hãng truyền thông lớn nhất thế giới này trở về quỹ đạo cũ. Ông đã giải quyết dứt điểm từng vấn đề đau đầu của Time Warner , từ trả bớt nợ, bán bớt các bộ phận làm ăn không hiệu quả cho đến dàn xếp ổn thỏa các các cuộc điều tra liên bang và vụ kiện của các cổ đông.

Bạn có thể tìm hiểu thông tin có ích và ấn tượng về các nhà lãnh đạo giỏi, có uy tín trên các trang web giới thiệu về doanh nghiệp và doanh nhân. Ví dụ, trên trên web www.fool.com, có nhiều tin tức về những nhà lãnh đạo này trên chuyên mục “xác định sự quản lý có hiệu quả” (Identifying effective management) hay “Điều tra về đầu tư” (Investigative Investing).

5. Có lợi thế cạnh tranh nhất định

Trở lại ví dụ của hãng Time Warner và AOL sau khi sáp nhập. Mặc dù trong thời gian đầu, AOL gặp rất nhiều khó khăn, song họ vẫn giữ được nhiều khách hàng trung thành. Tại sao nhiều khách hàng vẫn trung thành với họ? Bất cứ một nhà cung cấp dịch vụ trực tuyến nào cũng muốn cung cấp cho người sử dụng một địa chỉ e-mail miễn phí và lôi kéo khách hàng sử dụng địa chỉ email của mình, chứ không phải của các đối thủ cạnh tranh. Và khi một ai đó đã sử dụng địa chỉ email do hãng của bạn cung cấp, chắc chắn họ sẽ không dễ dàng từ bỏ địa chỉ e-mail của bạn để sử dụng địa chỉ e-mail của một nhà cung cấp khác. Đơn giản là họ sẽ gặp nhiều rắc rối và đau đầu vì thông báo địa chỉ e-mail mới cũng như mất thời gian cập nhật và nhận thư từ từ nhiều địa chỉ e-mail.

Tương tự như vậy, hãng dịch vụ cho thuê phim Netflix của Mỹ là một trong những hãng có tên tuổi và tiên phong trong lĩnh vực cho thuê DVD và bán phim trên mạng internet. Khách hàng có thể thâm nhập vào danh mục các bộ phim mà họ muốn xem và khó có thể từ chối những dịch vụ mà họ cung cấp.

Đó chính là những công ty có một lợi thế cạnh tranh nhất định trên thị trường, mà khi quyết định đầu tư cổ phiếu, bạn có thể xem xét đến chúng.

Sau khi bạn đã xác định được đâu là một công ty mạnh, có triển vọng trên thị trường, bạn quyết định tìm kiếm và mua cổ phiếu của nó với bất cứ giá nào? Đừng làm như vậy. Các công ty chất lượng cao, giá cổ phiếu của họ thường ở mức trung bình. Nếu bạn trả giá cho cổ phiếu của họ quá cao, rất có thể sẽ làm ảnh hưởng đến hoạt động kinh doanh và tổn hại đến thu nhập của họ. Vì vậy, nếu bạn là một người kiên nhẫn, bạn nên chờ đợi thời cơ. Ví dụ: một hãng kinh doanh rất thành công, nhưng gần đây họ bán cổ phiếu với một giá hoàn toàn không quá cao như nhiều người nghĩ. Đó chính là hãng Coca-Cola. Chỉ số P/E của hãng này chỉ xấp xỉ xung quanh 22, thấp hơn mức trung bình trong lịch sử của hãng này.

“Một công ty lớn có giá cổ phiếu không quá cao”, đó chính là một công thức kiếm được nhiều tiền trong đầu tư chứng khoán trong nhiều thập kỷ nay. Bạn nên suy nghĩ về điều này trước khi quyết định mua cổ phiếu của một công ty nào đó.

On November 24 2009 Novartis officially inaugurated the US’s first ever large-scale flu cell culture vaccine and adjuvant manufacturing facility in Holly Springs, North Carolina. The facility was established as a result of a partnership between Novartis and the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in an effort to improve influenza vaccine manufacturing technology in the US. The total investment in the facility is nearly US$1 billion.

The operations at this facility will use modern, cell culture-based manufacturing technology which is easier and faster to use than the traditional based egg based vaccine. Cell culture technology for influenza vaccines is not yet approved in the US, but if licensed in an emergency, the facility will be ready to respond to a pandemic as early as 2011. The plant is planned to be running at full scale commercial production in 2013.

Within the partnership, Novartis is responsible for, among other things, pre-construction document development, land use and zoning, construction, commissioning, validation and licensing of the facilities with the goals of regulatory licensure, manufacture and release of seasonal and pre-pandemic vaccine. In the event of an emergency Novartis is also responsible for the provision of pandemic vaccine supply or other vaccines or biologicals. Under the partnership Novartis is expected to provide two commercial-scale annual lots of pre-pandemic vaccine for a minimum of three years. In addition, HHS can exercise options to purchase additional influenza vaccines over 17 years.

While the facility is the first of its kind in the US, Novartis already operates a cell culture-based manufacturing plant in Marburg, Germany. This facility is already licensed to produce a seasonal cell culture-based influenza vaccine, Optaflu®, which has won approval in all 27 member states of the European Union, Iceland and Norway. The facility currently produces Celtura®, a H1N1 pandemic vaccine licensed in Germany and Switzerland.

On November 20 2009 Horizon Discovery and Novartis entered a four-year strategic collaboration for cancer models to be used in Novartis’ drug research programmes. Horizon is to deploy its Genesis gene engineering platform to develop a panel of genetically defined mutant and normal (X-MAN) cancer models for Novartis. Horizon is to receive an up-front payment as well as milestone, and renewal fees of undisclosed value.

Una Asl qualsiasi dell’Emilia Romagna, ore 11:00 del mattino la nostra cavia si presenta al luogo deputato per ricevere la somministrazione del vaccino contro l’influenza A H1N1, reca con se la lettera di “invito” ricevuta qualche giorno prima.

• ore 11:00 c’è già tanta gente in attesa (sembra il casting di un nuovo reality)
• ore 11:25 consegna della lettera
• ore 11:50 chiamata e primo colloquio con un medico, si compila e si firma una liberatoria, si viene mandati in un’altra stanza d’attesa, tra le mani il foglio illustrativo che rivela il nome del vaccino, finalmente si scopre che si tratta di Focetria prodotto da Novartis.
• trascorrono 20 minuti, dietro chiamata si entra in una seconda stanza a colloquio conoscitivo con uno specialista, un quarto d’ora di chiacchere, si passa ad una ulteriore stanza
• trenta minuti d’attesa e si viene chiamati nell’ambulatorio per la somministrazione del vaccino, quindi si passa all’ultima stanza di “decompressione”, quella nella quale si trascorre mezz’ora, come suggerito dal bugiardino, prima di poter lasciare la struttura sanitaria

In totale sono trascorse circa due ore e quaranta minuti. Dopo circa due ore dall’uscita, la nostra cavia inizia ad avere sensazione di caldo e gonfiore al viso, alla terza ora emicrania, dolore al braccio dell’iniezione e indolenzimento, frebbicola leggera verso sera. Il giorno seguente esordio con febbre a 38.5, telefona al medico curante, il quale prescrive due giorni di riposo, comunicati in ditta per la gioia del datore di lavoro, paga Topogigio.

P.S. Ringraziamo la “cavia”, che ha deciso che il vaccino stagionale non lo farà.
