The N900 has a 5mp camera – 4:3 ratio at 2576×1936. It also takes widescreen 16:9 images at 2576×1488 (3.5MP). Below are some photos I took a couple of days ago on the way to one of my lectures. It was a pretty gloomy/cloudy/rainy day with some brief spots of sunshine.

Just for reference, in this occasion, the automatic white balance looked off on the N97, much cooler than the actual scene which looked more accurate with the N900.

I did have comparison sample with the N97 but I seem to have left that in my room at Cardiff to post it here (I hope so! Otherwise I’m gonna have to phone the insurance people). I can’t go get it as I’m 30 minutes away from London. [I knew I'd leave something important behind].

This means I’m going to be completely reliant on the N900 for music/photo/navigation which is going to be such a strain on the battery. My Proporta Charger is an absolute fail and isn’t charging anything (Apparently their warranty does not cover electrical products).

I do have a spare BP-4L but the N900 takes BL-5J which are completely different sizes.

If you’re reading this, then this demonstrate the N900 can use the native wordpress.com site for blogging. No app download, just raw wordpress pretty much how it would appear on your desktop….albeit within the confines of a 800×480 pixel wide screen. Note screenshot below is zoomed.

The flash media uploader looks and acts like the same tool on my pc.

It’s not 100% the same thing. The biggest issue is that the browser snaps the pages to fit within the 800 pixel length, instead giving priority to the left and right panes but not the main text windows.

I wish, like on my N800 there was a way not to ‘view to fit screen’…though with N800 even that doesn’t help.

I think it’s good enough for most types of blogging. I can post links, copied from another window,

• create
• lists
• using
• bullet points

insert headings

change font colour, underline, italics, bold, copy and paste…copy and paste….copy and paste…etc…

…so you’ve pretty much got the formatting sorted.

And it’s also a testament to the keyboard that you can write pretty lengthy posts with it at reasonable speed, as well as the added convenienve of mobile broadband using 3.5G to post without the confines of a WiFi spot.

I was just about to leave to catch a train (going home-home first then London for the weekend) but thought that I couldn’t let the weekend go by without a blog post.

This is just an absolute quicky showing off the N900’s autofocus video. Unlike the N97 or other Nseries that are stuck to a fixed zoom point (N97 horribly set to infinity, so anything closer than, um 1 mile is blurry), with the N900, the subject can be very far away, within a few cm and the infinite degrees in between.

This was literally all shot, edited in  2 minutes. Uploading whilst I type this.

Initially the intention was to give a jist of the size of the N900. But since I was snapping away in phone retail stores, I didn’t get appropriate angle shots so you can see how easy it is to be deceived by comparison photos unless you see them flat, centre and horizontal with comparisons of [layered] length, width and thickness.

www.sizeasy.com/ helps if you want to compare phone sizes and you’ve got their dimension. This of course ignores curves/tapering which assist in the illusion that your device is smaller than what it actually is.

Ignoring size comparisons, the photos below are still worth a look for comparing aesthetics/design.

The only one that’s slightly useful for size comparisons is N900 vs Blackberry Bold. (This is my mate’s Bold, snapped these just as the lecturer was walking in – but still much better to have a flat surface to take comparison shots with)

This morning WOMWorld kindly sent over the Nokia N900! Much excitement aside, I won’t be writing much in this post; I’ll leave the video and photos to speak for themselves.

Hopefully you’ll be on a broadband connection as there’s tons of live pics of the N900, the box contents as well as an unboxing video shot in HD.

…The Nokia N900 has arrived at my house. Well maybe. I haven’t opened the DHL bag yet and won’t open it until I get home after lectures. I want the first time the N900 box is opened to be on film, ha. It may possibly be that there’s just a box inside, maybe even a mixup and it’s not an N900, heaven forbid! I literally have seconds to go before I have to leave for “Muscle Development in Drosophila melanogaster 2″.

Memory Tester Touch is a game that well…tests your memory.

You’ve got a 3×3 grid of 9 squares. One square lights up at a time, and you have to remember the pattern as one new square is lit (provided you’ve got the previous pattern right – otherwise game over)

You get one point for each correctly lit square you remember. Get a square wrong and you’re back down to zero. Unless you hit a new high score, the previous high score will continue flashing.

At the onedotzero event, I remember trying to get the N900 to crash with low memory errors or slow down. I couldn’t.

MySymbian proves this in the video below where the N900 is pushed to multitask all available apps. Where most others would have frozen, crashed or killed other applications to open a new one, the N900 juggles one new app after another without breaking into a sweat.

Whilst on the move, being able to handle several tasks simultaneously and quickly switch to the application at hand should be part definition of Smartphone.

Many smartphones can multitask – but they have a limit (and application switcher interface could be improved!*). Though you can be on guard and stick to the limit, sometimes you inadvertendly exceed that which will lead to problems of crashing, apps unintentionally closing and freezing.

The N900 bears this burden.

This would have been reason alone for me to get a N900 were I not trapped in another contract. Le Sigh.

I am however, concerned how much this multitasking will affect battery life (particularly as multitask apps are actively doing something, e.g. pulling data, accessing on board memory which is using power). Nevertheless, for me, battery life concerns are far outweighed by the advantages of multitasking without worrying too much that the phone won’t handle it and crash.

*N900 doesn’t just have static thumbnails or a set size window size or worse or just icons – it has dynamic live windows that alter in size the more windows you multitask – max  16 live windows viewable at one time. No guessing what application is which by their icon (especially if you have multiple browser windows open), no flicking through endlessly through big fat window/thumbnail representations alone.

Stuff Magazine takes a look at  “Meem 5″ powered Nokia N900. Ha, MEEM.

What’s echoing across many of the gadget blogs is that the N900 is:

• Chunky,
• Bulky
• Impressive – has “potential”.
• has a Great Browser

How much will this bulkiness put the mass public off from even trying out the N900? It was certainly enough for the supposed “Gadget Inspectors” over at the Telegraph to punish the N900 with only 6/10

Expect a full review (hopefully after some understanding of how to actually operate the N900) from Stuff Magazine peeps soon.

After an initially positive view of the N900 over at the Telegraph, Claudine and some guy (Alan Carr?) as supposed “Gadget Inspectors” take a look at the Nokia N900. To see the video, you’ll want to head over to the Telegraph.

Some interesting points:

• Whilst Claudine isn’t a fan of the physical QWERTY keyboard + touch screen hybrid, the guy (what is his name? I’ll refer to him as ‘the guy’) likes them. You do have a choice of using a virtual QWERTY (albeit with lack of multitouch, typing may be slightly slower)
• + Apparently, it’s the best pull-out QWERTY keyboard the guy come across, though the top row is slightly problematic being too close to the screen. Much better accuracy than with the HTC Hero and Magic .
• +Claudine loves the panoramic/4 desktops – quickly switch the shortcuts/info/widgets that suits your mood.
• +Claudine thinks that Maemo5 is a “lovely OS” and that the browser is “absolutely beautiful”.
• - They harp on about the 181g weight of thee N900. Closest current smartphone in same weight category is the 178g Touch Pro2
• -They HATE the Ovi store which seems to taint the rest of their review of the phone as they compare it to the iPhone and it’s gargantuam library (of fart apps). They compare Ovi Store to being Primark and Apple’s AppStore to Selfridges or Harrods. Harrods? Seriously…and that’s not really fair on Primark because what they lack in quality they make up for in quantity.
• -When asked if Claudine would give up her iPhone for the N900, she said no – mainly because again – the Ovi Store.
• Claudine says she sees bags of potential with the N900 and Maemo, but that she’ll will wait around for the second generation of MaemoPhone (Which is what Nokia had intended from the very beginning; N900 for tech geeks, N920 or whatever is next is for mass market)
• The final verdict of their first impression, Claudine gives N900 7/10, mainly due to the Ovi Store and the guy gives the N900 6/10, due to the N900 being too heavy (notice his douchey joke) and because Nokia have included a stylus that you could lose.

The main reason to hate the presence of a stylus is because it means you’ve got a resistive screen. Though the N900 has an excellent resistive screen, you do still need a tad bit of pressure, when touch screens should really be all about featherweight contact.

On having a stylus: the N900 doesn’t need it. The 5800 had a stylus embedded and has done absolutely fine. Though subjective, I have never seen anyone use the stylus. It’s optional (for the tech geeks), not necessary.

Again, to journalists writing for general public on tech: the N900 is not for the mass market or Nokia’s answer to the iPhone. Intended users of the N900 and Maemo5 are more like beta-testers for the eventual ‘iPhone Killer’ from Nokia – which by then should have a solid foundation of Maemo Applications to stand on at the Ovi Store. At least, that’s how Maemo marketing want to play it.

Desmentido o boato do dia

A notícia do dia, que está circulando em vários sites e blog tanto aqui no Brasil quanto lá fora foi que durante o N900 meet up, que aconteceu ontem em Londres a Nokia teria afirmado que até 2012 todos os aparelhos da linha N seriam migrados do Symbian para o Maemo. Pela afirmação o Symbian ficaria para as outras séries (E e X). Chegou-se até a suspeitarem de que a versão S40 iria acabar.

Digo e afirmo, como fiz em diversos blogs hoje, isso é empolgação do pessoal por trás do desenvolvimento do Maemo 5. A Nokia já afirmou diversas vezes que o sistema operacional dos seus smartphones É e SEMPRE será o Symbiam e o Maemo ficará apenas para os NITs (Nokia Internet Tablets).

Além disso, quem esteve presente na parte da manhã do Nokia Camp 2009, realizado em São Paulo dia 24 do mês passado, pôde ouvir isso do próprio Pekka Somerto – Vice presidente global de Marketing digital da Nokia.

Para fechar, acabei de receber a resposta da própria Nokia internacional sobre este novo boato:

“Embora seja nossa política não divulgar detalhes do nosso roadmap de produtos, gostaríamos de comunicar explicitamente que continuamos firmemente comprometidos com a nossa escolha da plataforma Symbian para os smartphones. Qualquer especulação sobre o nosso roteiro de 2012, incluindo sistemas operacionais e produtos da marca, é completamente prematura.

Como já dissemos anteriormente, a Nokia tem múltiplas plataformas para servir a fins diferentes e diferentes mercados. Symbian é a melhor opção para levar os smartphones para as massas. Maemo é o nosso software de escolha para dispositivos baseados na tecnologia que você costuma encontrar dentro de um computador. Ele oferece ao usuário uma experiência diferente e nos permite ampliar o mercado.“

Agora eu tenho que ser o chato que diz: “Eu disse… eu disse…“.

The wait is finally over and the Nokia N900 has been launched at stores in USA. The Nokia N900 is not being sold on any carrier but will be sold at the same price sim-free.

The Nokia N900 is already shipping to users who have preordered the device. So they are in for a good treat.

Nokia y Telefónica han anunciado hoy que ofrecerán, en exclusiva en España, la solución Nokia N86 8MP Comes With Music, que permite a los usuarios descubrir una nueva forma de disfrutar de la música desde su móvil Nokia N86 8MP o desde el PC. Los consumidores que accedan a “Comes with Music”, a través de su Nokia N86 8MP CWM de movistar, podrán disfrutar de las más de 5 millones de canciones de Nokia Music Store, sin preocuparse del coste de las canciones y sin límite de acceso durante un año gracias a la tarifa plana ilimitada de Internet en el móvil Plus de movistar. Las canciones se podrán conservar tanto en el móvil como en el ordenador una vez finalizada la suscripción.

Nokia N86 8MP Comes With Music estará disponible en exclusiva con movistar desde 0 euros a partir del próximo 20 de noviembre. Así, por ejemplo, contratando cualquiera de las modalidades de Planazo 29,90 euros de voz, y un compromiso mensual de 15 euros de datos, el móvil costará 29 euros tanto para clientes que provengan de otra compañía como para nuevas altas. It’s interesting that whilst the N900 is meant for a select audience of geeks and the N97 meant for the masses, the N900 has much more appeal to the average consumer. As Cali says,

“a less technical person would probably enjoy the N900. It’s by far the simplest and FUN user interface I’ve ever seen [on a Nokia phone]“

Cali stills finds the iPhone UI to be much simpler, with the Android powered Moto Droid just slightly less challenging than the N900.

Somehow it opens up and you've got two screens (possibly three if the moving one is double backed)

Nokia Key- putting info from one phone to another. Seems a bit outdated to have to use a physical object to transfer content you want. Unless this”key” is just meant to be a SIM card of the future. Otherwise, couldn’t you just do some bluetooth jazz and transfer via contact?
