If anyone in your fraternity claims it was a crap year in music I think it’s a fitting moment to slap the person, put his (or her) head into the bassbins of Fabric, turn the volume knob in deep South East and aurally torture the person to the following Top 10 Reader Choices List on Space Dust as voted by YOU!

Running a blog can be a singular affair where you at times feel you might be the only person who actually like what you’re posting.

This is when statistics come in handy. Giving a perspective of what you people, around the world, actually like (and don’t like) on Space Dust.

It would have been selfish of me to just keep this information for myself, and it would have been even more narcissistic of me to only highlight my personal choices of the year.

#1: The Temper Trap – Sweet Disposition (Axwell & Dirty South Remix)

Since dropping sometime prior to summer 2009 Axwell & Dirty Souths take on The Temper Trap’s ridiculously catchy – “Sweet Disposition” – just kept growing and growing and growing.

It was a match made in Heaven between a great song, and two astonishing talented producers who delivered the Chord Hook Of The Year

#2: Skunk Anansie – Because Of You (Duke Dumont Remix)

The comeback of Skin and the boys very nearly beat The Temper Trap to the #1 post for a short while, but with Tongy well on the case of “Sweet Disposition” the remixes of “Because Of You” was left behind in second and third position on the Top 10 Readers Choices chart.

Surprisingly the Duke Dumont Dub-Step remix proved more popular with you lot than the Michael Cleis version, which somehow speak loudly about the formidable rise of Dub-Step in 2009.

#3: Skunk Anansie – Because Of You (Michel  Cleis Remix)

Michel Cleis’ 9′06 mins. epic remix of “Because Of You” followed in the wake of his huge, terrace-rocking “La Mezcla”!

Treading a similar path – its understated drum-pattern coupled with shimmering top-line, and Skin’s chanting vocal, kind of opened the Ibiza heavens, and upon your return you just couldn’t get enough of it!

#4: Metronomy – Do The Right Thing (Wild Geese Remix)

After being featured  in the Aeroplane August Mix Chart the powers of Metronomy exploded to the forefront, and this mid-tempo, Balearic, “Your Love”-top line driving Nu-Disco remix by Wild Geese just summed up the whole vibe of Summer 2009 in 7′21″ mins.

#5: DJ Hell – The DJ (Radio Slave Remix)

DJ Hell provided some fantastic moments in 2009. Not content with delivering one Tech gem after the other on his Gigolo label – he also enlisted the powers of Radio Slave who promptly took the road-call of Diddy of “20 mins. versions) literally and pushed the fucker to a staggering 28. mins on his remix.

To keep a crowd locked in the same track for 28. mins seems like an entirety, but with Hell and Radio Slave time wisked by in second and lapped it up like kittens.

#6: Cosmic Balearic Beat Vol 2: Dance Disorder – My Time (Radio Slave After The After Remix)

Nu-Disco has undoubtedly surpassed the sound of Electro faster than you can say “Kawasaki”, and with Aeroplane at the helm the compilation of Cosmic Balearic Beat Vol. 2 proved to be the soundtrack of the summer 2009.

I could have posted the entire album, but this workout by Radio Slave, working his 11.mins. chunk magic, on Dance Disorder’s “My Time” had you swinging from the rafters.

#7: Soul II Soul – Back To Life (Remix By The Rules)

What can you say ? The legacy of Soul II Soul’s awesome classic – “Back To Life” – got the justified update treatment by The Rules, and suddenly magic was born again.

It sent us way back to the summer of 1989. It proved that great music transcends time and fashions, and even on cold December night, like tonight, it sends rays of summer light straight into you living room.

Goose bumps all around – go hug a stranger!

#8: The Tough Alliance – A New Chance (The Juan Maclean Remix)

The DFA crew had an awesome year. The Juan Maclean in particular seemed busier than most, and whatever moved seemed to have a The Juan Maclean Remix attached.

The Tough Alliance delivered this Pop driven gem in the shape of “A New Chance”, which The Juan Maclean sent on an NYC Disco-strutting walk down the piano-driven pavements of Lower East Side with a Balearic stamp firmly placed on the forehead of the two Swedes.

#9: Marbeya Sound – Salmons Take

The announcement of Cosmic Balearic Beats Vol .2 back in August had you reaching for mouse-action, and this seeded Balearic Nu-Disco diamond by Marbeya Sound – “Salmons Take” – seemed to hold on right up until time of writing.

It’s mid-tempo, cascading arpeggio driven, Disco strut is just the kind of shit, which might soundtrack a new version of “Saturday Night Fever” anno 2010.

#10: Orbital vs. Roy Two Thousand – Halcyon 2K

Considering the sea of re-edits and remixes of remixes of remixes cluttering the Blog’o’sphere this awesome, lovingly crafted homage to the 25 Year Jubilee of Orbital created by Roy Two Thousand stood way above the rest of the pack.

And thankfully – you lot voted with you love and finger tips for this to remain within the Top 10 Space Dust Readers Choice chart.

Just to prove the point of Dub-Step, and its atmospheric rise to wider acclaim, Roy Two Thousand’s take on “Halcyon 2K” is the kind of stuff, which should have had an official release, but – thankfully – got a life of its own on the Blog’o'Sphere!

‘Tis the season!

This’ll probably be the last post on electronic rumors before the new year, between now and then we’ll be working hard on our ‘best of 2009’ post.

It’s not many years ago when it was totally unheard of for record companies to release stuff in December – apart from numb-skull X-Mas compilations poluting the market with the same licensed X-Mas tracks you’ve heard a zillion times before.

With record companies now finally having come into the digital age you get releases as late as 21st. December, and DFA Records just slipped another chapter in their Scion A/V Remix Series, which highlights the massive The Juan Maclean and 4 new remixes from his 2009 album – “The Future Will Come”.

With mixes supplied from the likes of a stupendously brilliant workout from Canyons, a mid-tempo analogue roller from Gavin Russom, a pumped-up Gay-Tech anthem from Shit Robot and this percussive driving, Tech-House nugget from House Of House there’s enough feast on this plate to keep your stomach full a long way through the holiday season.

One of the only Indie albums which made it onto running on loop in my car this year was “In This Light & On This Evening” by Editors.

Its combination of perfect tune-smith work, a touch of Joy Division and a flirtation with electronics made it one the best listening albums this year. In fact – if you still haven’t heard it – it comes with my highest recommendations if you like a combination of the above.

“You Don’t Know Love” gets the once-over by the increasingly brilliant Caged Baby, who promptly transforms the string laden original into a pumping Disco strut swinging along on an almost “Billie Jean” inspired drum-pattern with added cowbell!

Coming packed to the rafters with giant handclaps, chugging Italo arpeggio and surging, plugged, pizzicato strings combined with that forceful vocal the Caged Baby remix is indeed a thrilling, suspense-laden soundtrack to your night on the tiles.

Holy Ghost are lashing out X-mas presents on their blog.

This remix of Van She and their current single – “Don’t Fear The Reaper” – was done for Bacardi Live, and the Holy boys took the challenge literally an added “More Cowbell” just for the sake of it!

It’s momentarily all over the Blog’o'Sphere, so – hey – why not here as well!

The vocals are a bit “so’n’so”, but the Holy Ghost instrumentation should get you shuffling your feet in no time!

I first fell in love with Calling In Sick’s music after I heard their storming reMix of Midfield General (Feat. ViLa)’s ‘Disco Sirens’.

My production partner and I nearly signed Simon Spacerock to Adam Freeland and his Marine Parade label, with Adam being in love with our single – “Feeks”!

Lots of Trans Atlantic talks later things unfortunately stranded after Adam relocated to Los Angeles, and instead we signed with Koma & Bones’s Burrito label.

Adam went on to become a Rock Star with lots of flashy L.A chicks around him, while we maintained our houses, got kids and provide you with sonic goodies to warm yourself by.

No hard feelings – we still love Adam and (almost) everything he does. Although it has to be said his latest Freeland album – “Cope (TM)” – was a below-par imitation of Justice, and soundwise just got there a little late.

The entire album has now been remixed  under the imaginative title of - “Cope (TM) Remixed”- and in short the list of producers providing mixes reads like a who’s who in the business with the list being so long I can’t be bothered with listing them all.

The result is thankfully far greater than its original counterpart, and of the stand-outs is this diamond remix by the ever-genious of Prins Thomas, who like his fellow Norwegians – Lindstrøm, Todd Terje and Rune Lindbæk – seem to be working in super-large 10.mins . chunks. If not 40. mins – like Lindstrøm!

You know what to expect from Prins Thomas, and with an 10′48″ mins. acoustic-driven Disco-Strut you also know what you need to do!

The previous post of Steve Miller Band made me think of ageing 1960’s Blues-Boogie specialists – Canned Heat – who amazingly are still around, and still touring tirelessly around the world.

Just goes to show – once smitten you never stop, and if you and I are not careful we will insist on keep going until our ears drop off or someone says: “Enough – stop! – you’re pitiful!”

Nevertheless – you might remember this as “On The Road Again”, and it was SUPER large during the Vietnam War when it was legit to have 30 inch beards, flowers in your hair and have an opinion around psychedelics.

Hmmm – sounds like last weekend – doesn’t it?

The ever wicked Norwegian – Todd Terje – crafted this lovingly resurrection of “On The Road Again”, slipped under the banner of “Wanda Rode Again” back in ‘08, and in short it’s a piece of genius with subtle kick, snare, claps and FX’s added to the already genius of the track.

If you’re playing the “Back-Joint” or the after-party – this is the kind of shit you drop at 6.A.M to spin peoples heads!

Makes sense – just like 30 inch beards, flowers in your hair and psychedelics!

I can’t say I’ve ever been a major fan of Californian Blues/Prog-Rock turned Pop in the late 70’s – Steve Miller Band.

Mostly know for their “The Joker” and “Fly Like An Eagle” their back-catalogue is a piece of Americana I was either too young to understand or it just never appealed to me because I was into Disco at the time!

What goes around comes around, and in the capable hands of now legendary Scottish DJ slash Edit maestro – DJ Harri – everything makes sense when two worlds are collide in one.

With over 20 years of DJ experience – DJ Harri – has certainly been round the blog a couple of times (like me!), and knows his shit from his sheep, so to craft a lovingly edit of Steve Miller Band’s – “Macho City” – was a bold move and a nice not-obvious choice considering “Fly Like An Eagle” have been done to death.

“Macho City (DJ Harri Edit)” sits comfortably in todays mid-tempo Nu-Disco fascination, and coming complete with dubbed-out FX, funky slap-bass and Steve Miller doing his best on funky Disco guitar-licks there’s enough wizardry in here for it to be a stable feature on the wonderful Tim Sweeney – Beats In Space, New York – show.

And come to think it – a thunderstorm sample always provides an intense moment of atmosphere.

Get out of the rain – and get into this!

They claim Space is The Final Frontier – if so welcome to it!

Perhaps one of the most criminally overlooked tracks in the Blog’o’sphere in 2009 – Dada Munchamonkey – “The Operator” - was actually slipped by Skyline Records back in April, but Google the fucker and you only get 2 pages!

Where were you ?

The brainchild of – Edward Joseph Ruscha V – who is son of the acclaimed L.A painter – Edward Joseph Ruscha IV (I’m not making this up – people!) – but you might also know him as part of The Laughing Light Of Plenty, and someone who makes deeply experimental leftfield music using stacks of analogue synths, and performs productions almost live!

The term “Space Disco” has often been used on these pages, but rarely has it fitted better than on “The Operator”, and its DJ Garth Rocket Mix, although you could actually say its roots are more hidden in Tribal-House.

With some wonderful souped-up drum patterns, live organ grinds, spacey FX and wicked bassline “The Operator” nearly comes across as a modern day Jaydee – “Plastic Dreams” for modern day Discotheques and Space Cadets.

If you are to discover one good track for the day – make it this one!

You won’t regret!

Gloomy post-punk act O Children have had their single ‘Dead Disco Dancer’ masterfully reMixed by New York Disco heroes The Golden Filter.

Anything The Golden Filer touched seems to turn to …well, gold, and this reMix is no exception. A dark Disco dub tune that really kicks in around the four minute mark.

Justin Laberge is a 22-years-old House producer from Vancouver, Canada. His sample based productions, some of them released on local Solid Bump Records, will probably remind you of those early French Cassius, Stardust or Superfunk sounds..

It probably figures, when asked for a small bio his response came down to: ‘vinyl records! vinyls forever!’.. Here’s one of his latest, a Daft Punk remix that would do absolutely no harm to a late night afterparty.

Thanks to a friend this came to Jackplug: Les Chinois. Not French nor Chinese, these two young musicians come from Holland and this might be the only thing you’ll ever hear from them. Which is too bad really, here’s some proof:

I was eagerly looking forward to the Joe Goddard solo album, but it never really got my juices flowing.

This new Hot Chip single – “One Life Stand” – scheduled for release on 9th. February is however a very good reason to start throwing the X-mas tree about.

Lifted from the forthcoming album, which is expected to be a lot harder than previous material, “One Life Stand” is great pin-pointer to which direction things are heading with its firm feet on the wooden floor.

Riding on a fantastic Boogie rhythm with electro’ish bassline, and some dead cool kettle-drum patterns thrown on top Alexis Taylor sounds as crisp as ever.

It holds all the classic Hot Chip hallmarks, and with a great chorus to hold onto you will definitely do a rewind’n'reload more than once after hearing this.

Bring on the album – excitement is all around!

The hype machine is rattling as more Sky Ferreira material is popping up on the internet. This L.A.-girl is 17, ambitious, backed up by some hot European producers (Who happen to be part of Miike Snow) and her skills are being compared to those of Mariah Carey (and probably Gaga, Madonna, Hannah Montana and so on for miles of corny equasions.)

Enough already. This one production actually sounds good, kinda sounds like Aeroplane which is a big plus. Stevie Nicks fans might not necessarily like this cover, but it’s a stable production. Gotta thank Skeet Skeet for this as he posted it first. He also made a nice Beatles vs. Dr. Dre Mashup together with young Ferreira, which appeared simultaneously on the internet with this Stevie Nicks cover:

Sky Ferreira promises her upcoming album to be a ‘Revolutionary pop album’. ‘Revolutionary’ and ‘pop(ular)’, contradiction? No judgements just yet. She’s off on a good start, so let’s hear the album first.

It’s that time again, for one of the greatest UK Electro acts around, CHEW LiPS, to kindly give away another free track to coincide with the last of their regular club nights.

This time there’s a twist though, while previous giveaways have been taster of what to expect on their painfully anticipated for coming album, this tune ‘Rising Tide’ won’t be featured on the release and the band have put it up online for a limited time only.

The music here has got an almost Yazoo flavour which works perfectly with Tig’s vocals.

Iceland’s crazy bassheads Steed Lord have dropped their own reMix of ‘Royal Ruffian’ taken from their album ‘Truth Serum’.

It’s a hell of a lot heavier than the original (now that the original was lightweight!), the lead synths and vocoders remain but the beats and bass hammer through the speakers.
