Last night was an event I have been looking forward to for a very long time; Fake Blood at Digital. I have been a fan of this DJ for quite a while (as well as his part of his collective work with the Black Ghosts), and a previous set earlier in the year was one of my favourite gigs of the year.

The club was packed with perky pulsating students – bar a few old stragglers (bad auntie being one of them). The girls with their primed hair were donning fake blood over their over perfected faces (much to our amusement), and which would eventually be dripping off the walls – it was completely a sweat pit.

Mr Blood himself? Majestic. No words to describe the phatness transcending from his fingers, so you dance like a raving loon to it instead, becoming crazier as the night drew on.  At points he build with a pulsating techno tune, but dropping an almighty raving base wobbler (you might be forgiven for thinking the subs were fans until you realized they stole your eardrums). He even possessed a slick remix of ‘Cyrstalised’ by the XX, which scores him extra respect points with the Brightonians. Initally ending on a smart reedit of Mars, he was encored a record 5 times, surreally mashing up Abba (the kids loved it). And judging by the smile on his face, I think he likes us too.

Nothing like a good dance to great music to make you feel alive. Though many of my moves would not had been so gracefully accomplished without the double pants theory. Cheers girls xxx

“Space and The Woods” by Late of the Pier

My buddy, my pal, Josh (aka ShomerfuckingShabbos), brought both Late of the Pier and Klaxons into my life by suggesting them to Sassy O’Malley, my brother, as seen over there to the left with his Twitter feed (he will be a contributor soon enough). I can’t thank him enough for this.

These two bands showed me there is much to be appreciated in dirty, spastic, synth-y rock. They’ve both been referred to as “nu rave” or “nu wave,” but anybody who feels the need to call them that can screw off, largely due to the association with whoever coined “nu metal” for what became the end of popular radio as an even remotely respectable medium. It’s gotten to the point where new bands that I love cannot be defined easily. Rather than saying, “Oh, they’re part of that whole new-new wave thing,” most respectable music aficionados that I know simply try to ballpark it with a couple of somewhat related bands and an adjective or two.

Klaxons, for example, was introduced to me by my brother simply saying, “Trust me. You’re going to like this. It’s totally your thing.” He was completely right, but more importantly, I know why he didn’t throw any band names my way to prepare me. It’s because they have a truly unique sound. There were no obvious musical reference points, and it didn’t fit neatly into a specific genre.

Do we need to make up a new genre for this music? I think the last useful new genre name I heard was “post-rock,” and that’s partly because it is so broad. These bands like Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Sigur Rós were using rock and orchestral instruments to make music that clearly did not have the same intention as any traditional rock song. Even as such, post-rock as a genre term is useful but not necessary, and it’s broadness saves it from insulting the huge variety of bands that are included in it.

I think trying to make up a genre for a modern-day band heavily influenced by new wave by calling them “nu wave” is incredibly simple, especially considering the branding of “new wave” bands in the 80s is similar to post-rock in that it describes what it isn’t rather than what it is. There just isn’t a good reason that I can see for making up new genre names, especially those that simply mix or reference the names of other long-established genres.

Now is the time to quit with the genre excess and simply do what comes naturally: use adjectives and give points of musical reference. More importantly, for all of these modern bands soaking in seventy years of modern musical influence, neither of these descriptors attempts to define the band or song or composer. It’s more to spark interest and excitement in the listener for the new, undefinable experience they’re about to go through.

Better yet, do what my brother did: say “trust me” and hit play.

Nigdy nie słyszeliśmy o takich zespołach jak Sonic Youth, Velvet Underground czy CAN, tego ostatniego z resztą nie lubimy, a ten pierwszy według nas nigdy nie wyszedł poza rockowe schematy.

Muzyka zespołu to wypadkowa motorycznej sekcji rytmicznej, chwytliwych melodii i słodkiego gitarowego zgiełku. Zespół sprawdza się w ostrych punkowych skitach nie stroniąc od numerów psychodelicznych i transowych.

15 czerwca 2007 nakładem Love Industry ukazał się debiut Psychocukru – płyta MAŁPY MORSKIE. Druga plyta ‘NO MORE WORK!’ miała swoją premierę 1 października 2008 roku. Na nowej płycie Psychocukier podejmuje także wątki dotyczące tożsamości, próby określenia miejsca w postindustrialnym kulturowym krajobrazie miasta (Izrael Poznansky, Kamikaze). W śmiały sposób kontestuje pojęcie pracy jako czynnika nadającego sens egzystencji (Śpiący Pies w BMW).

W warstwie muzycznej mamy na No More Work do czynienia z bardzo ciekawą i odważną próbą redefinicji grania gitarowego. Próbę daleko odbiegającą od tego, co dziś uchodzi za gitarowe granie na polskiej scenie „indie”.

Powiew świeżości w zatęchłym ciężko-metalowym i paździerzowo-punkowym mieście. Lubelski kolektyw składający się z dwóch Dj’ów grających taneczne klimaty spod znaku indie, post-punk, electro i new-rave. Swoją działalność rozpoczął we wrześniu 2008 r… Już niedługo będzie można ich posłuchać na różnych imprezach a w przygotowaniu są energiczne sety i nowe remixy.

Der erste Videoclip von Super Super zum Track “Hausparty” feierte im Stuttgarter Club “Wohnzimmer” Premiere. Komplett abgedreht und produziert von Manoo für 4what films. Zwar kein Rap, doch der Track geht höllisch ab, Nu Rave halt. Take a Look!

Hát gyerekek ma megint mivel hozott össze a sors. Nézem, mondom ezmiez? Ez a nu rave. Röviden és tömören, valami mindenféle most menő stílusból összegenerált katyvasz. Azt nem tudom, hogy hogyan sikerült rátalálnom, de egy kicsit utánanéztem. Hát úgy bővebben ezt úgy kell elképzelni, hogy természetesen ez nem csak egy divatirányzat, hanem egy zenei ’stílus’. Hmm. Itt álljunk meg egy pillanatra. Rá kellett döbbennem arra, hogy ez bizony az a zene, amikor van benne némi gitár és a többi az szín tiszta elektronika. De azért mégsem az a full tuccogós valami. Hát nem tudom. Valaki homályosítson fel ha rosszul tudom… Volt már szerencsém ilyennel találkozni mostanában, de már régebben is volt rá példa. Igazából nem tudtam, hogy ez ilyen ‘őrületté’ növi ki magát. Természetesen ez is a tengerentúlról indult el és érkezett kishazánkba is. Ami még meglepő volt számomra, hogy ez bizony már 2007-ben is volt. Na jó. Álljunk meg egy pillanatra. Én ennek a hullámát csak most kezdem tapasztalni. Vagy csak én vagyok ilyen elmaradott kisvárosi internetet erősen használó viszonylag jól tájékozott ember? Azt azért úgyis mindenki nagyjából vágja, hogy most mi a ‘hűdetrendi azonnalbekellszerezni cucc. Na pl ezalatt a latexharisnyát meg ezeket a műanyag színes napszemcsiket értem. Na hát ez kb számomra annyit jelent, hogy jelen pillanatban a disco kezd egyre nagyobb teret hódítani. Na meg ez az öltözködésben megnyilvánuló modernhippizmus, jó színesen, feltűnően, neonosan. Kíváncsi leszek, hogy ebből mi lesz.

Ez is egy olyan dolog, hogy valaki szereti, valaki meg utálja. Ízlések és pofonok. Ezvan.

A Justice-t speciel már régóta ismerem. Mondjuk azt azért nem tagadom le, hogy a kipp tetszik. =]  Amúgy még jó példa lehetne erre a Klaxons is.

Na más téma. Tegnap este jót sikerült nevetnem egyik (nem kedves) ismerősöm msn kiírásán, aminek a lényege az volt, hogy 13-14 éves kislányok hogyan merészelnek felrakni májvipre bikinis képeket. Hmm. Ja és, hogy ezekből lesznek a kiégett ribancok. Nos, hát egyrész igaza van. Egyetértek vele, mivel, hogy valóban azt hiszik páran, mert a pózoljbikiniben otthon a tükör előtt dolog irtómenő, mivel a nagyok is így csinálják. Hát meglepő ennek a korosztálynak a viselkedése. Másrészt meg, – amivel nem értek egyet, hogy ki is a kiégett ribanc? Ez amolyan bagolymondjaverébnek, de ezt nem részletezném, hogy miért.

A mai nap tanulsága: én maradok a rákendrolnál – na jó azért hajlandó vagyok meghallgatni ilyen zenét is és amúgy engem nemérdekel, hogy ki rakosgat magáról ilyen képeket. ^.^

O que é New Rave? Onde nasceu? Quem criou? No que influenciou?

Pelo o que parece o movimento Nu (new) Rave apareceu na Inglaterra em meados de 2005, acabou tendo repercussão no Japão, onde teve muita influencia na moda, o som new rave é uma conhecida mistura musical dos anos 90, Rock com eletrônico, o termo new rave ainda é polemico pois bandas como Klaxons e CSS (banda brasileira) dizem que essa classificação não passa de uma invenção da mídia Inglêsa.

A Forma de se vestir é inegável, as cores fluorescentes e maquiagens exageradas marcam bem o estilo, algo que já não é tão novidade, pois se prestarmos atenção nos visuais temos a impressão de estar vendo uma mistura do visual punk+hip Hop+Hippye+funk das décadas de 60,70 e 80 tocando um som jah conhecido da década de 90 bem representado por bandas como “Prodigy” bem antes de existir o termo New Rave.

Uma coisa muito fácil de se encontrar em termos de moda e design New Rave são os toy arts, se você prestar atenção muitos fabricante de toy também fabricam roupas e são estas roupas que adeptos do visual nu rave aderem, e o mesmo acontece com os toy arts, por serem em sua maioria toys que refletem algum estilo é fácil encontrar toys com muitas características new rave.

Antes de torcer o nariz escute algumas bandas, não é certo tomarmos  decisões generalizadas, por que assim como as roupas o som também varia de banda para banda.

Lettori TH!Smag vi presento una linea che mi ha colpito la prima volta che l’ho vista indossato da un mio caro amico,  vedete questo brand di nome CARACAS MOOD è molto più che un idea creativa o un progetto stilistico, a me sembra molto di più, mi sembra quasi un movimento stilistico che spazia tra le tendenze giovanili del momento.  Basta vedere i colori che abbinano e le stampe creative applicate su queste t-shirt slim cut o over-size. Qui sopra ci sono alcuni esempi ma andate a vedere il resto sul loro sito! Sono davvero dei designer in gamba!

Having watched most of the Twenty20 through a pop-up window at my desk, I felt very fortunate to take my seat on the pavilion balcony at the Oval to sample it first-hand yesterday. Here are a few things that I learnt:

1. With Chris Gayle’s fluoro-shades and the equally luminous sweatbands worn by the quick bowlers, the West Indies are definitely the most nu-rave team in international cricket. They really should come out to bat to the Klaxons.

2. Younus Khan speaks with the cadence of an agitated racing commentator. He also looks a lot like DS Don Beech from The Bill. But I knew this already.

3. A scantily-clad young female cavorting lasciviously whilst draped in the Pakistani flag seems a bit wrong.

4. Well done to Surrey who won their first County Championship match in nearly two years. I actually learnt that today by looking at the internet on my phone while on a picnic with my parents but I feel it needs to be said.

5. The Yahoo yodelling jingle that accompanies every change of bowler maybe the worst excess of the commercialisation of cricket, but it is strangely entertaining.

6. The ICC need to hire a PA announcer that doesn’t sound so sinister when declaring to the crowd that “all the children are very welcome today”.

7. The dubious novelty of the Mexican Wave. It is popular not only with England fans. Happily after a few abortive attempts, the crowd seemed to give up on it. I think this is because, like water down the toilet, the Mexican Wave goes counter-clockwise in New Zealand. The opposite to everywhere else. So after a few awkward occasions when they just waved at each other, it was put to one side.

8. Twenty20 is more than just great fun. But it doesn’t compare to a Test Match.

Valerie es una suerte de colectivo electrónico francés (de Nantes) que además de buenos músicos cuenta entre sus amigos con unos ilustradores malviajados en el futurismo ochentoso, que también tienen su propio colectivo y que se llama the Zonders.

Entre el trabajo de estos colectivos han definido un estilo, una rama del Nu Rave que tiene su propia personalidad -formada de entre otras que tenía la gente hace veinte años- que nos entrega música realmente disfrutable, bailable, buena ondita, trendy, pop, sabrosona y que también se conoce por Post French Touch.

Una mezcla entre lo kitsh y la nostalgia es la manera en la que lo define su mismisimo organizador, conocido como College y que ha compartido con gente como Anoraak, Mintel Rose y Russ Chimes (algunos ya han pasado por las pantallas de este blog).

Ahora, con esa idea detras de las consolas -y como son bien cuatitos todos- se han juntado para cooperarse de a track por cabeza y formar este LP, Valerie & Friends, para que todos tengamos el gusto de darle una probadita a ese Miami ‘85 de luces neón que sólo existe en la memoria. Y en las provincias de Francia.

I think it’s gonna be like the last record but swollen. We’ve been listening to a lot of European prog music and dubstep and dance and folk. A huge broad variety of things really. There’s one track we’ve been playing in soundcheck, it’s this massive prog opus.”
თუმცა აშკარა იყო რომ ახალ სტილთან გვქონდა/გვაქვს საქმე.ეს არ ეხება მხოლოდ მუსიკალურ მხარეს, ჩაცმის სტილიც განსხვავებული ჰქონდათ/აქვთ, თუმცა როგორც მუსიკაში ისევე ჩაცმაში ინდის გავლენა დიდი იყო/არის.

HMV ჯგუფს ახასიათებდა, როგორც acid-rave sci-fi punk-funk-ს, MySpace-ზე სტილში მითითებული იყო Psychedelic / Progressive / Pop, NME-მ დაწერა რომ ისინი სრულიად განსხვავდებოდნენ იმ დროინდელი ინდი სცენისგან და სტილს New Rave უწოდეს.
New(Nu) Rave-ს განვითარებაში არავის შეუტანია იმხელა წვლილი როგორიც KLAXONS-მა, პირველი ალბომის მნიშვნელობა საკმაოდ დიდი იყო/არის/იქნება ამ სტილისთვის.
