Ein großes Potential für die automatische Spracherkennung sieht Nuance-Generalmanager Michael-Maria Bommer im Mobilfunk. Ich hatte dazu bereits einen Artikel für NeueNachricht geschrieben. Nach Aussagen von Bommer sind Softwarelösungen seines Unternehmens zur Handysteuerung bereits auf rund vier Milliarden Endgeräten vorinstalliert. „In diesem Jahr werden weltweit 1,1 Milliarden Handys ausgeliefert. Auf 880 Millionen Geräten ist Nuance-Technologie im Betriebssystem integriert. Insgesamt gibt es für die mobile Kommunikation zur Zeit die innovativsten und prägendsten Entwicklungen. Beispielsweise das Diktieren von SMS. Sie sprechen eine Botschaft ins Handy, die von dort an unseren Server geschickt, transkripiert und innerhalb von einer Sekunde als Text zurückgeschickt wird. Die Qualität, der Komfort und die Sicherheit, die mit diesem System etwa während der Autofahrt erzielt wird, ist enorm”, sagte Bommer auf der Fachkonferenz „Conversations“ in München. Davon sind auch andere Branchenexperten überzeugt.

„Wer Textnachrichten auf dem Handy verfassen will, muss immer noch viele Beschränkungen hinnehmen. Am Format der Endgeräte wird sich nicht viel ändern. Die Tastatur in unterschiedlichen Variationen ist für viele Menschen einfach zu klein. Sprachsteuerung wird sich hier über kurz oder lang durchsetzen, nicht nur beim Schreiben von Kurznachrichten, sondern auch bei Suchfunktionen“, prognostiziert Peter Weilmuenster, Vorstandschef des ITK-Dienstleisters Bitronic.

Die FAZ-Redaktion „Motor und Technik“ konnte jetzt eine Beta-Software von Nuance auf verschiedenen Geräten vom Nokia bis zum Blackberry testen. „Ein Tastendruck startet das System, man sagt beispielsweise ‚SMS an Klaus Müller auf dem Handy’. Die Software identifiziert den zugehörigen Eintrag im Telefonbuch des Geräts und bereitet das SMS-Formular vor. Mit einem weiteren Tastendruck diktiert man nun seine Nachricht, die Aufnahme landet via Mobilfunk in wenigen Sekunden bei Nuance, dort wird transkribiert und das Resultat in die SMS-Maske eingefügt. Eventuelle Fehler lassen sich flink berichtigen, weil der Nuance-Dienst zu jedem erkannten Wort mögliche und wahrscheinliche Alternativen mitschickt. Das alles klappt, wenn man sich auf ein, zwei Sätze beschränkt, deutlich schneller als die Eingabe der Nachricht per Hand, selbst wenn man ein luxuriöses Smartphone mit einer etwas größeren Tastatur hat“, schreibt der FAZ-Redakteur Michael Spehr.

Die Handy-Spracherkennung werde in Amerika zusammen mit AT&T entwickelt, in Deutschland soll ein solches System ebenfalls in Kooperation mit den Mobilfunk-Netzbetreibern starten. „Vorstellbar ist, dass manche Angebote für den Kunden sogar unentgeltlich bereitgestellt werden. Denn wenn man eine SMS schnell diktieren kann, wird man mehr davon verschicken“, so Spehr.

Was Nuance sonst noch vorhat, schilderte Marketingsdirektor Steve Chambers in seiner Eröffnungsrede auf der Conversations DACH seines Unternehmens in München.

Tenminste; als we de wetenschappers mogen geloven die in de media hun verhaal doen. Met nadruk noem ik hier de wetenschappers die de weg naar de media makkelijk weten te vinden, omdat ik na het lezen van het artikel uit Villamedia ben gaan twijfelen aan hun uitingen over de ’Global Warming’.

Belangrijk hierbij is ook de rol van journalisten. Zij bieden deze wetenschappers een platform, maar moeten ook nuance brengen in de discussie rond de ‘climate change’. En van dat laatste lijkt geen sprake te zijn. 

Wie mijn naam googlet, vindt resultaten van een eerder opgestarte blog met de naam Save Our Nature. Ik wilde een blog maken over alle berichtgeving rondom het klimaat. Nog steeds heeft het mijn aandacht, maar anders dan een paar jaar geleden. Mijn ogen zijn wel enigszins geopend. Er kan anders gekeken worden naar de opwarming van de aarde.

Op mijn stage bij het AD werd ik door mijn praktijkbegeleider al gewezen op de critici van Al Gore en ik moet toegeven dat ik ook neig naar een kritische houding ten opzichte van het doemdenken van veel wetenschappers. Graag wijs ik u op dit artikel.  En dit is niet het enige.

Al Gore heeft voor de film An Inconvenient Truth  veel lof mogen ontvangen, maar kreeg ook veel kritiek. In Groot-Britannië mag de film zelfs alleen maar getoond worden met een voorafgaande waarschuwing. Deze waarschuwing wijst de kijker op negen wetenschappelijke onjuistheden in de film.

Nu even terug naar de rol van de journalist. Hoe komt het toch dat de meeste vakgenoten kiezen voor het doemscenario? Wordt dat beter gelezen? Schrijft het lekker weg? Of zijn ze stiekem allemaal klimaatfanaten en willen ze zo snel mogelijk dat iedereen ophoudt met het milieu verontreinigen? 

Van dat laatste ga ik niet uit. Persoonlijk vind ik de voorgaande twee redenen ook niet erg overtuigend. Blijft de vraag wat de reden dan wél is.

In het artikel van het villamedia-magazine beschrijft de auteur de werkwijze van veel journalisten. De schrijver stelt dat ze alleen samenvattingen van wetenschappelijke onderzoeken meenemen in hun berichtgeving, waardoor de nuance van een geheel onderzoek doorgaans ontbreekt. Een idee om over na te denken. Niet alleen als het over de opwarming van de aarde gaat.

Wetenschappelijk onderzoek. Een lastig onderdeel in de journalistiek.

Vaak stijgt de kennis ons boven het hoofd, waardoor onze zoektocht naar een heldere conclusie niet verder gaat dan de korte samenvatting. Helaas doet dit geen recht aan het hele onderzoek. Bovendien is het nog maar afwachten hoe de journalist de gegevens interpreteert. Journalistieke interpretaties zitten er (helaas) vaak naast.

Wetenschappers zijn te vertrouwen. Dat is het gangbare idee in de media. Gek genoeg haalt dit idee onze hele beroepsattitude onderuit. We ‘durven’ niet kritisch meer te zijn op de wetenschap. Of misschien durven we het wel, maar zijn we het te weinig. We laten ons overrompelen door hun kennis.

Natuurlijk zijn er oplettende journalisten en horen een tegengeluid. Het principe ‘hoor en wederhoor’ herinnert hen aan de aandacht die ze behoren te besteden aan beide kanten van een verhaal. Helaas levert het ook dan soms geen goed resultaat op.

Ik denk aan de prikken voor tienermeisjes tegen baarmoederhalskanker. Vorig jaar nog prominent in het nieuws geweest.  De NVKP (Nederlandse Vereniging Kritisch Prikken) raadde deze prikken af om redenen die de doktoren en de wetenschappers weerspraken. Met argumenten weerlegden doktoren het verhaal van de NVKP. Toch wist de media niet wat te doen.

Het gevolg? Chaos en onrust. Ouders wisten niet of de prik nu veilig was of niet. Doktoren kregen via de media niet de kans de bevolking te overtuigen van de prik tegen baarmoederhalskanker. Verslaggevers steunden in dit geval te weinig op de kennis van doktoren en wetenschappers, waardoor hun uitspraken 1 op 1 werden gepresenteerd met die van de vereniging. 

Ook nu weer verdween hiermee de nuance. Overigens is dit nu het geval bij de vaccinatie tegen de mexicaanse griep. Viroloog Ab Osterhaus werd bekritiseerd op zijn verhaal over het griepvirus. Nu de inenting in volle gang is, zijn veel mensen blij dat er in ieder geval iéts tegen gedaan wordt.

Of het nu gaat over het klimaat, over een vaccinatie of over een ander wetenschappelijk onderwerp; het blijft lastig voor journalisten. In ieder geval een onderdeel van ons vak waar we nog veel aan kunnen en moéten werken. 
Blijven schrijven met de nuance in de pen!

Dat is de enige oplossing.

Das Amazing Race, der Wettbewerb „Mensch-gegen-Maschine“, bildete den krönenden Abschluss der Conversations DACH in München.

Die Deutsche Meisterin im Schnellschreiben Martina Wichers stellte sich der Herausforderung in einem Tipp-Wettbewerb gegen die Spracherkennungs-Software „Dragon NaturallySpeaking“ von Nuance anzutreten. In dem Rennen wurde ein 2200 Zeichen langer Text auf Zeit getippt bzw. diktiert, wobei auf korrekte Rechtschreibung, Interpunktion sowie Groß- und Kleinschreibung wert gelegt wurde.

Trotz ihrer beeindruckenden Leistung von sagenhaften 500 Zeichen pro Minute (8 Zeichen/Sekunde) konnte Frau Wichers nicht gegen die Software gewinnen. Christof Stuhlmann (Nuance) diktierte den Text, den die Software fehlerfrei erkannte, in 2 Minuten 51 und unterbot damit Frau Wichers um 1 ½ Minuten.

There is great power in both. With great power comes great responsibility. Not going to lie though; it’s lots of fun to have those powers and use them without regard to consequences. Just have to be careful.

In Japan’s early history, a serious disregard for manners could be punishable by death, and any samurai could kill any common person who failed to show him proper respect. The Japanese were required to behave in precisely prescribed ways—wearing permitted clothing, walking only a certain way, sleeping with their heads pointing in a certain direction and legs arranged a particular way. Eating, greeting, gesturing with hands, opening doors and many work tasks had to be done in assigned ways without deviation. Conduct became a measure of morality, and virtue in manners was visible for all to see. Even today, the code of conduct plays a significant role in the lives of the Japanese. Many societies, not Japan alone, have a prescribed form and manner for every familiar situation that might arise. Unforeseen situations can cause intense embarrassment or discomfort. Throughout East Asia, actions are judged by the manner in which they are performed. More important than the accomplishment of a task is the question of how someone went about trying to complete the task: Did he act sincerely? More important than winning the race is the grace of the runner. More important than expertise is the way one gets along with others. More important than profits is harmony. In contrast, Westerners and particularly Americans are more concerned with the principles of things, hard “measures” and objective facts. Although rules of ethics are extremely important, we are more goal oriented than method-conscious, we say “a good loser is a loser.”

One aspect of form is the concept of “face.” Much has been written about “face-saving” in Japan and China, but face-saving is important absolutely everywhere. The difference is only a matter of degree and nuance. Where an American might feel a little guilty or inadequate, an Asian, Arab or South American may feel deep shame and humiliation. What an American might see as a little honest and constructive criticism, the foreigner may take as a devastating blow to pride and dignity. A foreigner is likely to be sensitive to feelings of others in transactions that an American would consider strictly impersonal, such as returning a defective product or switching hairdressers. The traveler simply must be more conscious of saying things or behaving in ways that cannot be taken as disrespect, criticism or humiliation. Harmony with the environment can be as important as sensitivity to people in some cultures. In Japan a woman wears a soft pastel dress to a flower show so as not to take away from the beauty of the flowers. In countries where people believe in reincarnation they are careful about all forms of life. In India, for example, people are careful not to swallow gnats or step on ants—one might be a relative.

In vielen Berufen muss ein hohes Schreibaufkommen unter Zeitdruck bewältigt werden. “Kein Wunder, dass immer mehr Krankenhäuser und Gerichte nach neuen Wegen suchen. Da ist zunächst der Umstieg auf die Digitaltechnik, die das mühsame Hantieren mit Kassettenbändern ersetzt und zudem den elektronischen Transport der Diktate erlaubt. Dass die Akustik solcher Aufzeichnungen deutlich besser ist, kommt als angenehmer Nebeneffekt hinzu. Der zweite Schritt ist der Übergang zur elektronischen Spracherkennung am PC, wobei in der Regel die Standardsoftware Dragon Naturally Speaking für Windows zum Einsatz kommt. Kein anderes Programm hat eine vergleichbar hohe Erkennungsleistung”, schreibt beispielsweise Michael Spehr von der FAZ.

Wozu Maschinen schon jetzt in der Lage sind, stellte ein Amazing Race am 11. November 2009 in München auf dem Fachkongress Conversations DACH unter Beweis. In einem Mensch-gegen-Maschine-Wettkampf trat Martina Wichers, Deutsche Meisterin im Schnellschreiben, gegen das Spracherkennungssystem Dragon Naturally Speaking von Nuance an. Frau Wichers war unheimlich schnell. Das beweist mein Mitschnitt. Die Software brauchte allerdings nur die Hälfte der Zeit. Hier der Film.

Spracherkennung und die Sprachsteuerung von Geräten oder Suchmaschinen sind schon längst keine Zukunftsmusik mehr. Vor allen Dingen im Mobilfunk setzt man auf neue Steuerungsmöglichkeiten und Applikationen. “Wer die schlauesten Handy-Anwendungen anbietet, wird den Mobilfunkmarkt der Zukunft beherrschen”, berichtet beispielsweise Spiegel Online. “Stellen Sie sich eine Handy-Anwendung vor, die über einen Tastsensor Ihren Stresslevel misst und die zu ihrem Gemütszustand passende Musik abspielt. Dass Sie die Nummer des Notrufs wählen und ein Arzt, der sich zufällig in einem benachbarten Gebäude aufhält, automatisch darüber informiert wird. Oder dass Sie Ihr Smartphone in der Stadt auf Gebäude richten und das Telefon ihnen anzeigt, wie ihre Umgebung vor 50 oder 100 Jahren ausgesehen haben dürfte”, so Spiegel Online.

Augmented Reality, erweiterte Realität, heiße das Schlagwort für solche Tech-Visionen, die Wissenschaftlern zufolge in den kommenden Jahren die Mobilfunkbranche durcheinanderwirbeln könnten. Es gehe um Bilder und Videos, um Informationsschilder und Töne, die das Smartphone dem Nutzer an Ort und Stelle aus dem Internet saugt und auf dem Display mit dem Abbild der Wirklichkeit kombiniert. Das Handy werde so zu einer Art Sinneserweiterung. Was man mit Sprachsteuerung schon heute mit Handys veranstalten kann, beweist der interaktive Horrorfilm “Last Call” von der Werbeagentur Jung von Matt. Hier können Kinobesucher aktiv ins Geschehen eingreifen. „Wir wollen zwei Grenzen aufheben: die eine zwischen Film und Game, die andere zwischen Handlung und Zuschauer“, erklärt Andreas Henke, Creative Director von Jung von Matt, im Interview mit NeueNachricht.

Die strikte Trennung von Leinwand und Handlung soll gesprengt werden. „Hier der passive Zuschauer hinter seinem riesigen Popcorn-Becher. Vielleicht sollte man den Erfolg unseres Films an der Zahl ungewollt umgestoßener Popcorn-Becher messen“, sagt Henke. Seine Agentur möchte dem Kunden 13th Street und den Zuschauern ein innovatives Markenerlebnis bieten: „Kurz gesagt: guten modernen Horror. Gerade das Horrorgenre hat in der Vergangenheit sehr innovative Projekte geliefert. Wie vor einigen Jahren ‚Blair Witch Projekt’ oder Paranormal Activity in diesem Herbst in den USA“, so der Ausblick von Henke, der den Film beim Nuance-Fachkongress Conversations DACH vorstellte. Die Präsentation von Henke war wirklich witzig und eindrucksvoll.

A cég, akiről szó van: Nuance.

A Recognita magyar cégként indult 20 évvel ezelőtt. Pár fejlesztő kivált a Sztakiból, hogy megalkossák a szintén Recognitának keresztelt karakterfelismerő (OCR) szoftvert. Erre akkoriban nagy igény volt, rohamosan terjedt a lapolvasás, szükség volt ilyen jellegű alkalmazásokra. Különösen jól működő terméket sikerült alkotniuk, az akkortájt létező 2-3 ilyen alkalmazás közül ez működött a legkisebb hibaszázalékkal.

Ez azonban nem volt elég a sikerhez, sajnos marketing/értékesítési tapasztaltuk kevés volt, hogy világszinten labdába rúgjanak, ezért társultak egy Scansoft nevű amerikai céggel, akiknek szintén volt egy OCR termékük.

Négy évvel ezelőtt az akkor Scansoft-Recognitának hívott céggel egyesült a Nuance. A Nuance világszinten több ezer alkalmazottal működő multinacionális vállalat. Fő profiljuk a beszédfelismerés technológiája és erre épülő alkalmazások. A magyarországi iroda viszonylag autonóm szerepet élvez, az itteni fókuszban továbbra is az OCR és további képfeldolgozáshoz illetve szövegszerkesztéshez kapcsolódó technológiák maradtak.

Termék-portfoliójuk természetesen kibővült az elmúlt két évtizedben. A Recognita nevű alkalmazást ma már Omnipage-nek hívják, ezen a téren gyakorlatilag monopóliumhelyzetben vannak. Van egy alkalmazásmotorjuk OCR technológiákkal kapcsolatban, amit más fejlesztő cégeknek adnak el. Van egy Paperport nevű dokumentum menedzsment rendszerük erős képfeldolgozási oldallal. Ennek az egyszerűsített verzióját több neves nyomtató és scannergyártó cégnek adják el OEM szoftverként. Fejlesztettek még egy PDF szerkesztőt is, ami több mint 70%-át tudja az Adobe termékének plusz néhány egyedi funkciót is, ára viszont csak töredéke.

Jelenleg így néz ki a cég tevékenysége, a közeljövőnben viszont nagy változások várhatóak, ezért is keresnek most több mint 20 új munkatársat.

Egyrészt ők is haladnak a korral, eddigi desktop alkalmazásaikat szeretnék webes kliens-szerver alkalmazásokká alakítani, elsősorban az üzleti szférát megcélozva. Másrészt nemrég vásároltak fel egy amerikai fejlesztőcéget, az e-Copy-t, akik multifunkciós eszközökre (nagy irodai nyomtató-lapolvasó-fénymásoló egyben) fejlesztenek lapolvasással kapcsolatos munkafolyamat- és dokumentummenedzsment alkalmazásokat. Ezek a gépek ma már nagyon okosak, képesek összekapcsolódni egyéb céges eszközökkel (pl. adatbázisok, dokumentumszerverek, vállalatirányítási rendszerek).

A budapesti irodában jelenleg kb. 60 ember dolgozik, ez a létszám nő a közeljövőben a másfélszeresére. Három nagyobb csoportra osztható tevékenységük: technológia fejlesztés, alkalmazás fejlesztés és minőségbiztosítás. Jelenleg leginkább utóbbi két csapatba keresnek munkatársakat. Irodájuk a Budapest XIII. ker. Váci úton van, több szintet foglalnak el egy irodaházból, kényelmes és tágas irodákkal.

• SENIOR JAVA FEJLESZTŐK: a lenyeg, hogy a felsorolt technologiak iranymutatoak, ha egyik-masik hianyzik az nem baj, csak nagyon fontos, hogy: 1) legyen webfejlesztesi tapasztalatod; 2) ne akarj adatbazisos/J2EE cuccot fejleszteni; 3) legyél nagyon önálló!

• SENIOR BACKEND SYSADMIN: ez egy jutalomjáték rendszermérnököknek! Végre lehet játszani! A feladat az, hogy mindenféle infrastruktúrát kell szimulálni, amin a tesztelők kipróbálják a különböző szoftvereket. Tehát különféle heterogén rendszereket kell összerakni, és csak addig üzemeltetni, amíg a tesztelők használják azt a formációt éppen. Nem lesz user, se live alkalmazás a közelben, tehát a rendszer összedőlhet nyugodtan, sőt, mivel akkor fel tudják jegyezni, hogy ilyen meg ilyen csillagok együttálláasakor borul a szerver. 150 különböző fejlesztes alá kell infrastruktúrákat építeni. Ez egy System Sims4 Live játek! Oprendszer náciknak nem idális a pozíció, mert össze kell rakni Linuxot Windows-zal, Unix-szal, Mac-el, mindenféle kombinációban, terhelés alatt vagy nélküle. Örökös zöldmezős építkezés!

• SENIOR SW ENGINEER IN TEST: Ebbe a pozícióba első sorban egy C# fejlesztő kerestetik, aki egy teszteléshez használandó frameworköt fejleszt ki, ugyanakkor ideje egy kisebb részében összeállít teszteseteket is. Végülis mindegy, hogy milyen programnyelven tudsz programozni, ha értesz a tesztautomatizáláshoz!

• TECHNICAL WRITER a dokumentáció készítéséhez.

• SENIOR QA ENGINEER: tulajdonkeppen ez egy Lead QA pozíció, azaz teszteket kell tervezni, azaz a tesztelés területén senior ember kell. Mindenképpen tudnod kell fejleszteni valamilyen szinten, de elsősorban várszigorú, felelősségteljes, rugalmas es kreatív, értelmes ember kellmes is.

• RELEASE ENGINEER: nem kell feltétlenül pont azokhoz az eszközökhöz érteni, ami a leírásban szerepel, elég érteni ilyesmi eszközökhöz, és ha 2 különféléhez értesz, akkor elhiszik neked, hogy meg tudod tanulni a harmadikat.

• PRINCIPAL ARCHITECT: ez a masik jutalomjáték, annak, aki már nagyon sokat fejlesztett. Ebben a poziban már csak tervezni kell, stratégiát meghatározni, használható technológiakat feltúrni, de implementalni nem! Amint olyan fazisban van a projekt, hogy mar csak le kell kódolni, viszik a masik projektre. Semmi projektmenedzsment, semmi határidőkkel való szivás. Csak megtervezés es továbblépés. Jellemzően ki kell találni, hogy egy komplex szoftver mely része fusson a szerveren, mely a kliensen, es melyik milyen technologiával. Döntéshozás, de indoklással.

“Il suffit d’aimer pour être amoureux. Il faut témoigner qu’on aime pour être amant. On est souvent très amoureux sans oser paraître amant. Quelquefois on se déclare amant sans être amoureux.

Dans le langage ordinaire, la distinction entre amant et amoureux est inverse de celle que ces deux mots présentent dans le style élevé. On peut dire qu’une jeune fille a un amoureux, sans rien préjuger de défavorable ; on ne peut pas dire qu’elle a un amant. Below is an open letter we will soon be sending to Nokia, Vodacom, MTN, Nuance and Code Factory. It is a proposal for combining the flood of second-hand phones in Africa with text-to speech software so that blind people in developing countries can share in the empowering accessibility of mobile phones.

Dear Nokia/Vodacom/MTN/Nuance/Code Factory

Please consider the below proposal both from a social responsibility perspective and a wonderful marketing opportunity. It is a proposal for combining the flood of second-hand phones in Africa with text-to speech software so that blind people in developing countries can share in the empowering accessibility of mobile phones.

Background

The development of text-to-speech software for computers and mobile phones has heralded a Gutenberg moment for blind people equal to, or greater than, the development of Braille. The empowering benefits of these advances have however been limited predominantly to rich developed countries.

The following two factors means distributing speaking phones for free in Africa can be both viable and inexpensive:

1. The incredible uptake of mobile phones in developing countries – particularly in Africa.
2. The availability of simple-to-use text-to-speech software. (Note that giving away licenses to these products in countries where there is no market will be of negligible cost, but of significant public relations value.)

How the project could work

Three things are required for such a project: 1. a source of compatible mobile phones, 2. Licenses for the text-to-speech software and 3. An organizational structure to ensure effective administration and implementation of the project.

These three factors are considered below:

1. Sourcing mobile phones

The currently available text-to-speech software packages work mainly with Nokia phones running the Symbian Series 60 operating system. (This is why this mail is also being sent to Nokia)

-         Compatible second-hand phones could be sourced from Nokia (through their existing recycling programme) or through service providers like Vodacom or MTN. When upgrading a phone, users can be given the option to donate their old phone to the blind.

-         Excess stock of older phones could be donated.

-         Organizations for the blind or service providers can run donate a phone for the blind projects or compatible second-hand phones can be bought.

1. Sourcing the text-to-speech software

Nuance’s Talks and Code Factory’s Mobile Speak software are the current market leaders in this field. These companies can donate X amount of licenses to their software, the cost of which will be negligible since the software can be downloaded and all that Nuance or Code Factory would have to provide would be serial numbers. As long as the project is restricted to countries in which these companies do not have a substantial footprint, the potential losses in sales would be negligible and more than amply made up for by the great public relations possibilities. In addition, such donations could be seen as a first step toward creating a future market.

1. Organizational structure to drive the project

-         The project would have to be driven by a large company such as Nokia, Vodacome or MTN who already has a footprint in the targeted countries. This way the project can piggyback on existing company infrastructure and have direct public relations value.

-         Organizations for the blind would have to be significant partners in the project. These could help with identifying eligible recipients of the phones, distribution, training and support in the use of speaking phones.

-         Note that the text-to-speech software is limited to certain languages. Thus, only countries where French, Portuguese, or English are widely spoken could be considered at the moment.

We hope that you will give this project serious consideration. In our view it is tragic that millions of blind people still have to do without something as simple as being able to send and receive SMSs. Empowerment does not have to be expensive!

Today has been a severely literary day; I spent most of it reading for classes. And I spent my free time feeling like I should be writing, so I’ve been going over my book so I could continue it. The feeling is so strange. It’s like the nostalgia and sentimentality of going over an old journal mixed with the intention to create.

Lately, in the moments when I’m alone with my thoughts (which can be very often, even in a room full of people), I’ve been feeling very sentimental. Like I just want to love and be loved–but not necessarily in love. Like I just want a big hug from certain people I love without worrying about anything, and being able to just stay in those hugs until forever. And sleep together in a real pile, just like the Wild Things.

As part of my ongoing campaign to learn new words and enhance my comprehension, indulge me as I take a moment to analyze a certain word I’ve seen several times in the last decade yet whose specific meaning has eluded me.

“PhotoSketch picture software wins plaudits,” is the Telegraph.co.uk headline I read today, sparking a certain urgency: plaudit is the word I would like to focus on now.

Pronounced PLOD-itt, plaudit is a shortened form of plaudite, now obscure.  It’s also related to plause, and without knowing that word you can predict I’m taking us to applause, which is what these all mean.  Plause and plaudit (classical Latin: plausus) are both nouns that mean applause, people clapping in appreciation and admiration for a thing.  But plaudit expands the expression of this appreciation a little bit further, permitting a verbal round of congratulations rather than two hands clapping.  The Oxford English Dictionary allows that it means, in general, “any emphatic expression of approval” (and notes that it usually appears in its plural form).

Plaudite appears as early as the mid-1500s: “Yett I pray yo^u vouchesafe vs a plaudite eare yo^u go,” from ‘Buggbears’ in Early Plays in Italian.  Roughly translated to modern-speak: “Promise me you’ll clap before you leave,” something very close to that–the actual expression could change, of course, flavored by the larger context in which it appears.  It could be as playful as Puck soliciting the audience, or as desperate as an actor really needing a patron’s support.  Who knows?  I haven’t read ‘Buggbears.’

How would I incorporate this word into my everyday conversation?  I’m not sure that I could, unless I were making a sarcastic little joke.  Large or formal words are grand for that function, where they don’t exactly trip off the tongue when chatting with friends.  If I were feeling especially jolly, I might cheer “Plaudits to you!” to a friend who’d achieved some kind of accomplishment.  In reference to a third-person kind of thing, yeah, I think I’d sound obnoxious if I tried to blog about “plaudits to City of Minneapolis for their new bike-friendly infrastructure.”  I could probably get away with that once and then not use the word again for a few weeks.  Overuse an obscure or specialized word and people think you’re being overly darling to it.

And in the two examples, I’m simply swapping it out for kudos, which I do actually use casually.  While they’re similar, plaudits is not precisely interchangeable with kudos, as the latter means “glory, fame, renown.”  What’s interesting about this word is that it is not plural but appears to be: it is incorrect to reduce it to “kudo” as the word appears as kudos in its Greek origin.  So: don’t write kudos as singular, but generally use plaudit in its plural form.  Swing that and all plaudits are yours.

Donnie Brasco (1997)

Based on true events, director Mike Newell tells the story of how FBI special agent Joseph D. Pistone (Johnny Depp), whose mob alias is Donnie Brasco, climbs the ladder of the mafia hierarchy. Benjamin “Lefty” Ruggiero (Al Pacino) takes Brasco under his wing because Brasco can become somebody that he always aspires to be–a high-level member of the mafia who has genuine power so he can be proud of his life and the things he has done. As Brasco becomes more into the mafia life, he starts to detach from his responsibilities to his job and, more importantly, his family (Anne Heche plays his wife). “Donnie Brasco” was not the kind of movie I expected. Although I did expect for it to have very entertaining tough guy conversations that were common to gangster films, I did not expect it to have as much heart. The relationship between Brasco and Pistone was fascinating because the two almost had a father-son relationship. The tricky thing was that Brasco knew all along that he eventually had to turn Pistone in to the FBI; how could he do that to a friend or a father figure? The performances were exemplary, especially from Depp and Pacino, because there’s a real complexity and tension between the characters and their respective families. I felt like the more they tried to help each other out, the more their families’ lives started falling apart–as if their relationship was toxic or was never meant to be. I also really liked Michael Madsen as Sonny Black. His tough-but-cool persona reminded me of his character Mr. Blonde in “Reservoir Dogs.” Ultimately, this film is about the two lead characters’ evolution: one toward the mafia life and one away from it. For a two-hour running time, we wereable to observe the differences between what a character was thinking and what a character was doing. Although there were a plethora of similiarities between the two, the differences were enough to trigger a certain nuanced intelligence that are worth discussing when the credits start rolling. “Donnie Brasco” is arguably unlike other gangster pictures because it does not necessarily focus on how to be a gangster but on what it means to be a gangster. It’s worth seeing.

The company has put together a very informative video on what the Evernote tool is and how it works (see below). What I like is that it surpasses Google Notebook, which I never really found a use for, through the use of mobile integration tools. At $45 / year for the premium version, it’s very fairly priced for a document / web clip repository.

The tool also integrates with JotNot, an iPhone scanning app which costs $3.99 for the premium version (a must have to integrate).

Another handy tool is Jott. (www.jott.com) It’s a voice-to-text system that allows you to send txts, make lists, schedule appointment reminders, and a bunch of other nifty things. Instead of barking orders at a secretary, bark it into Jott instead for around $12.95 per month for the Jott Pro Assistant account.

On a personal note: What fascinates me most with tools like these is the increased potential for computerized, extended human memory. What you can’t train your own brain to memorize for you, you can put into a computer and organize. Almost like the Pensieve memory-viewer device found in JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series. It will be interesting to see how people interact with technologies like this on an increasing level over time.
