Cumbrians opposing the MRWS (Managing Radioactive Wastes Safely) charade use their own funds to attend meetings and expose the lies.
Meanwhile the government quango tasked with looking after the interests of the Lake District (Lake District National Park) are in receipt of money from the government quango tasked with “steps towards geological disposal (MRWS).

Lord Clark non executive director of Sellafield is on a salary ‘not in the public domain’ he is also chair of the Lake District National Park Partnership. Lake District National Park meetings chaired by Lord Clark reveal a bias as he talks up the safety and economic importance of Sellafield and new nuclear developments while playing down the risks.

Under his chairmanship the LDNPA SUPPORTS dangerous new build (9 new reactors) at Sellafield and is going merrily along on ‘steps towards geological disposal’ of high level nuclear waste under Cumbria.

Is this too cosy relationship illegal or classed as bribery – probably not? But evidence shows that the LDNPA has become a lapdog rather than a watchdog when it comes to the nuclearisation of Cumbria.

Subject: Freedom of Info request MRWS monies?

Dear Richard,

As you know the LDNPA supports proposed new build at Sellafield (up to
nine reactors) and is content to ‘work with partners on steps towards
geological disposal.’

The LDNP Partnership chairman is also a non executive director of Sellafield.
Lord Clark’s salary as non executive Sellafield director is ‘not in the
public’ domain even under the Freedom of Information Act.

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST
Under the Freedom of Information Act Radiation Free Lakeland would like to
know how much money has been paid and/or is scheduled to be paid to the
LDNP from WC:MRWS or MRWS Managing Radioactive Wastes Safely?

Many thanks

yours sincerely,

Marianne

This post will be about nuclear power and is complimentary to a recent article by LiberalConservativ

This post will be about nuclear power and is complimentary to a recent article by LiberalConservativeThought, of whom I often discuss ideas with (including Academocracy and Lords Scientific).

Fission
Nuclear fission works by firing neutrons at an atomic nucleus making it unstable then decaying. As the nucleus decays it releases energy and more neutrons – which in turn hits other nuclei near them creating a chain reaction. This only works with certain isotopes called fissle isotopes: Plutonium-239, Plutonium-241, Urainium-233 and Uranium-235.

Canada: Avril Lavigne, Wolverine & pressurized heavy water reactors.

U-235 occurs in natural uranium (0.72%) and enriched uranium (2.5-5%), these are the two main fuels used in nuclear power plants. Usually natural isn’t enough on it’s own and it has to be enriched, but in the Canada Deuterium Uranium (CANDU) pressurised heavy water reactor only natural is needed.

The UK and France also developed reactors capable of this (UK: Magnox, AGR | France: UNGG, PWR).

Weapons-grade Plutonium
Weapons-grade plutonium has over 93% of the fissile isotope, Pu-239, and can be used, like reactor-grade Plutonium, in fuel for electricity production via:

Fabrication with uranium oxide as a MOX fuel for burning in existing reactors,

Fabrication with thorium as a fuel for existing Russian reactors,

Fuelling fast-neutron reactors.

Fast neutron reactors produce about 60 times as much energy as the normal reactors, but are very expensive. As of now China (1), India (1), Japan (2) and Russia (1) have the only active ones. The USA and UK have stopped all research and development into fast reactors and the only work being carried out is related to decommissioning them.

Thorium and even safer reactors
At about three times the amount of naturally occuring uranium, thorium is quite abundant. Although thorium isn’t fissle, after absorbing slow neutrons and decaying twice, Th-232 will produce U-233. At the moment CANDU reactors can use thorium as a fuel, but The Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactor (LFTR) gets the most out of thorium because it uses a molten salt reactors which aren’t pressurised so cannot explode and it cannot have a meltdown because the fuel is already in a molten state. Unbelievably almost all of the thorium is used up in the thorium-cycle and the excess consists of less than 0.1% transuranic elements.

Although nuclear power is portrayed in the media as basically kicking a nuke, it is reasonably safe. Infact given the technological advancements in the industry, it could well be safer than (and definitely greener than) the coal and oil industries. Even so, nuclear scientists are looking for safer more efficient ways to generate power and the LFTR looks like the new clear way of generating nuclear power.

I was delighted to find the House of Lords discussing thorium pros and cons so reasonably and was glad to hear mention of the zero fatalities from Fukushima.

St. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) - A state report finds a radioactive waste dump posing no leukemia threat to St. Charles County residents, but a Washington University geochemist says don’t believe everything you read.

Dr. Robert Criss says the report is bogus, and notes that the Department of Health omitted the zip code, 63368, closest to the Weldon Spring waste dump. “If they were looking at zip codes, to include in the report of this kind, if that was an oversight, they should all be fired,” said Criss.

Criss said the report also compares current cancer numbers to mid-century statistics, even though St. Charles County population has grown by seven times. And Criss calls it a “crock” that the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services won’t release statistics on leukemia cases by zip code.

Criss said the Department dilutes the numbers further by including every corner of the county, and refusing to break those numbers down by zip code.

There’s a secure solution to America’s energy problem buried under booming Carlsbad, N.M

There’s a secure solution to America’s energy problem buried under booming Carlsbad, N.M. If only Washington would get out of the way.

French and US polls that I’ve read consistently show that people who live near nuclear power stations want to have more nuclear, not less. That perspective is almost impossible to find in the usual sensational media coverage. But this recent Forbes article is different. Carlsbad New Mexico is the site of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP ).

(…) Since opening in 1999, WIPP has operated so smoothly and safely that Carlsbad is lobbying the feds to expand the project to take the nuclear mother lode: 160,000 more tons of the worst high-level nuclear waste in the country

(…) Carlsbad has a different take. “It’s really a labor of love,” says Forrest. “We’ve proven that nuclear waste can be disposed of in a safe, reliable way.”

This attitude—“Yes in my backyard,” if you will—has brought near permanent prosperity to this isolated spot that until recently had no endemic economic engine. Unemployment sits at 3.8%, versus 6.5% statewide and 8.5% nationally. And thanks to this project—euphemistically known as the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, or WIPP—New Mexico has received more than $300 million in federal highway funds in the past decade, $100 million of which has gone into the roads around Carlsbad. WIPP is the nation’s only permanent, deep geologic repository for nuclear waste. The roads have to be good for the two dozen trucks a week hauling in radioactive drums brimming with the plutonium-laden detritus of America’s nuclear weapons production.

As recommended by the Obama administration’s blue ribbon commission, community involvement is essential to the successful siting and operation of a spent fuel storage facility. A similar story is found in the Swedish town of Östhammar a town of 22,000 inhabitants a two-hour drive north of Stockholm. Spiegel May 19, 2011 Why One Swedish Town Welcomes a Waste Dump. The towns of Östhammar and Oskarshamn competed for the new storage facility:

(…) For years, local officials were worried that another town with a nuclear power plant — Oskarshamn, which is 465 kilometers away and was also vying to be the site of the repository — would end up winning the contest. The two towns decided to make a deal. The company building the repository, Svensk Kärnbränslehantering (SKB), would provide two billion Swedish krona, or about €223 million ($312 million), of which the runner-up would receive 75 percent and the winner only 25 percent.

Some might say it was an attractive incentive for one of the towns to step on the brakes and come in second place.

The decision was made on a rainy summer day in 2009. Edelsvärd remembers the day very clearly. Östhammar town officials were sitting at the town hall, watching a live broadcast of the showdown in Stockholm. When the name of their community appeared on the screen, Edelsvärd says that “people weren’t cheering the way they would at a football match, but you could sense the feeling of elation in the room. It was a very Swedish way of expressing joy.”

Another case of good decisions resulting from competent community consultation is Finland’s new repository at Onkalo.

Please remember that what the media and Greenpeace call “nuclear waste” is actually incredibly valuable fuel for power generation. E.g., in the case of England, the UK DECC chief scientist David MacKay supported estimates that all of England’s electrical needs can be supplied for 500 years by burning the existing UK “waste”. This is in the context of Duncan Clark’s article on deployment of fast reactors such as the GE Hitachi PRISM being proposed to burn the UK “waste plutonium”.

(…) According to figures calculated for the Guardian by the American writer and fast reactor advocate Tom Blees, this alternative approach could – given a large enough number of reactors – produce enough low-carbon electricity from Britain’s waste stockpile to supply the UK at current rates of demand for more than 500 years.

MacKay confirmed this figure. “As an upper bound on what you could get from those resources in fast reactors I think it’s a very reasonable estimate. In reality you’d get all kinds of issues so you wouldn’t achieve the upper bound but I still think it’s a reasonable starting point.”

Despite federal promises to the power industry to dispose of their highly toxic, long-lived poisons — and despite utilities collecting more than $25 billion in fees for such from customers — more than 75,000 metric tons of high-level waste is still being stored at nuclear power plants and other sites across the country, including the South Texas Project nuclear complex in Matagorda County.

Not only is radioactive waste extremely difficult to contain, it’s also wildly unpopular. Go figure.

WHEN THE WATER FLOWS – a graphic novel

This graphic novel tells the story of retired Lakeland farmers, Tom, Ellen and collie dog ‘Blue.’ A government quango called ‘Managing Radioactive Wastes Safely’ sets out with careful orchestration to seduce Tom and Ellen with promises of unlimited money and persuasive reassurances in return for ‘volunteering’ their homeland as a nuclear sacrifice zone.

Reviews

New Writing Cumbria “Just as When the Wind Blows confronted gentle, optimistic couple Jim and Hilda Bloggs with the horrors of nuclear conflagration, When the Water Flows features retired Cumbrian farmer Tom and his wife and grandchildren, trying to make sense of Government proposals to find ‘geologically suitable’ sites for the burial of nuclear waste – one of which might be on their doorstep”. http://www.newwritingcumbria.org.uk/when-the-water- flows/comment-page-1/

A few times since I became aware of family farm/banker issues, as I have written in previous blogs via Acres, USA; The Voice for Eco-Agriculture, I have heard how it will all collapse in on itself and money will be meaningless. Somebody always has a survival package you can buy. My Elder Child, now a human in his adult nature, suggested since I knew so much about collapse I should do a new business with survival packs all set up. What happens with knowing, is a result from actually surviving, mountain top hostile environments while hypothermia fogs the brain, standing in hurricane flood waters with diesel fuel all around, just about everything Mother nature can train with and never having the ill pleasure of having to go to war, bless their soles, even if they did volunteer. All of this was the instant thinking that prelude to my answer, “With the $3.00 in my wallet and a half a tank of gas?” And I thought about those books along the way that promised the collapse now, and then, which never happened, because no one really understands that the economy under the Federal Reserve is the Social Thesis of controlled economy from all those going broke family farmers since 1970.

Now I am in the hind end of a very successful craft mastery, crashed out of business once again by the flights and dives set in motion with the controlled money machines. My longest run was building over 50 houses on Martha’s Vineyard, quietly, unpretentious, seriously attempting to make the world a better place over 17 years. I interrupt this message to share that I am not done yet. Left to my own devices, freedom to pursue happiness, I am sure I can make a significant contribution to the people and neighborhoods around me. Elder Child stepped in behind me in the nearly same path. At b35 I could have written a dissertation on the Federal Reserve and the Morman part in it during the last “Depression.” Son One, doesn’t know much about the Federal Reserve.

Many Americans are afraid of the draconian, unconstitutional laws–lest we forget Amendment 9–that their government proposes tyranny through. Can’t you hear the message? The time of Piscean government is coming to a close and old folks like the Rockafellas and Bushas, Chenees, and Ko-Ko Cocoapuffas, are shaking in their authoritative boots. It’s the generation about 35-40 that’s got them worried. Any person with half an actuary table in their concept of life can tell you Baby Boomers, no how many fancy Winchesters and Military knockoffs they own, are simply not the internal threat–though I would advise, some of them you don’t want to mess with. A metaphoric and humorous piece of entertainment that fits is the scene in Clint Eastwood’s movie where Granny takes on the Bikers Gang.

I read an alternative news post this morning by Stephen Lendman on Rense.com reporting on a new prediction by some top stock Guru. Do you think he might be considered an insider? I think the plan by the Fed was to shuffle the deck chairs until enough investors sat back down so they could wash the shuffle board and get ready to entice a new soap and water mix. A funny thing happened on a cruise ship, and Arch Dukes better watch their ass. Remember, mon dauphin, the lesson of Ferdinand and Kennedy is don’t take the wrong road! You could end up starting a whole war. Of course, as Lyndon Johnson knew, before Dallas, his friends were making a fortune off of Vietnam and things had not really heated up. Just before Dallas, Kennedy ordered troops home and planned to downgrade the war.

The Neo-Cons put their desires on paper, and behold, it all came true.

The people have to be milked for extended war. The advertising men gave previous wars mind control phraseology that ran deep, then they appropriated all the way to Ernesto Che Guevara for post modernity college tee shirts, right alongside, Mumia and Leonard. You can always take your responsibility back and learn to live with empathy for your neighbors and guess what, that will solve a host of world problems. America cares not for rights and freedoms, just as long as the gas pump, rent, and grocery store, all controlled by the Federal Reserve through market manipulations of money, make some kind of expected ratio to their television time. When the price changes without income changes, uh oh! Walmart on the card.

Have you ever read that part of the holy book on vanity? There I was, going to beat the game this time, investing my dollars and some credit in building a business in San Francisco. Spin the wheel place your bets. The “table” was rigged. Some people these days are running around looking for signs. Signs of a Blue Star, signs of a pole shift and a planet hiding behind the sun. Searching New Age Old worn out Spirituality formulas in a world gone way past any rational process under the tyranny of gimme. Senility and back stabbing is the politics de jour. Nancy Pelosi looked cute for an elder lady with her smirk and wink about Gingrich ending up President; “I know something.”

The big problem she has now, is any implication or connection to a false flag event someone else can hang on her, and she’ll be in the bunk next to Jim Kirwin at the FEMA camp. She has admitted, “I know something.” What, Nancy Pelosi, are you referring to? Ron, change planes often. Senator Paul Wellstone might have been a good candidate. The admen will create the dog to wag the tail.

Someone born today will be 20 as I’ll be 85. There is an actuary table for 20 year olds, so not every human baby will make it to 20, and the odds are increasingly higher I won’t make 85. This is such a small amount of time. 20 years is just about how long it takes to build a good business to retire from, unless you sell your soul at the corporate crossroads and bully, burn, and back stab your way to money. “I know something.”

The resource depletionists figure it will all be in stone age rebirthing about ten years from now. That doesn’t give the current 20 year old much hope. Wonder what those who are now being born, find out that the Modernists royally, or I suppose Royally fucked over the planet for paper; for a fist full of dollars and a few dollars more.

At the store where I buy a coffee to support economic circulation, the young woman today expressed enlightened philosophy about the times we are in, way far and above the general dinge of mind controlled consumerists. I left feeling lifted and hopeful. I got home and was reminded by the young men and women who have made their way to my friend’s One-man-community, and all hope for the 20 somethings evaporated and I could understand John McCain’s irrational North Vietnamese conditioned hatred of his own people. We’ve come full circle from Hanoi Jane to Hanoi John, and guess what, in the final analysis, Jane was much more on the side of Freedom and Liberty than John now appears to be. Good thing Jane married a media mogul and kept her royalties flowing.

Royalty is privilege. It means a tidbit for buying the DVD or CD or MP3. It means a bigger legal fee for writing contracts, and lobbying to shut down counter fitters. It’s probably going to be one of the next War On … when War On Terror wears out. The game is, and step up to the wheel folks, mind controlling you with The Spectacle. Read my blogs, or as Nancy Zeta Talker says, do your homework. Step right up we have varieties of denial to help forget the exhaust pipe is more than CO2 and that’s the least of the Oil Demon. We have magic powder dropping from the sky with the Big Computer Nerd buying toxic agriculture technology in complete disregard that most of the point of family farming is Holiness.

It is Holy to work the Land. The article I linked above talks about small family farms being unprofitable. How about add backs like excellent local food. How about family farmers are invested in their land and can be convinced of methods beneficial to all life–the Holy Covenant.

My associate in San Francisco used to joke about chasing the almighty dollar. Dad pointed out it doesn’t grow on trees, until I planted an orchard and explained the economics of raw materials. Now we will face scarcity, man made and natural limitation. We don’t have to have all the high tech metals if we don’t need all those jets and drones to kill other people, but then, we are now living under a military fantasy–Full Spectrum Domination. Dad said Hitler was out to rule the world, Stalin sure showed he was out to rule the Ukraine, and now there is Chernobyl.

Afghanistan is the Empire Breaker. There’s probably an alien force field there like the Bermuda Triangle and that’s why so many governments there look like 16th Century Caliphates. Maybe it would help us to think of it as a very big “Rome” of the Moslem world. I’m all for the war if it stops the abuse of women and minorities. I’m not going to hold my breathe. Besides, I want my breathe free and easy when somebody turns up Mitt Romney’s other wives, because if he has half the spiritual power Joe Smith had, he’ll have a few more than Newt, and he will be taking care of them!

Wallowing in Collapse will not redeem us. Fat needs burning on bicycles, I might vote for Tyranny just to set the Freedom to be Responsible thing going. I voted for McGovern and what a waste of time that was. There again, Nixon’s buddies were making lots of money off the war.

ActionAmerica.org Editor John Gaver has invented a novel concept: using problems to solve problems.

ActionAmerica.org Editor John Gaver has invented a novel concept: using problems to solve problems. He has shown how this works on the example of the illegal immigrant problem:

“Let’s use problems to solve problems.

Everyone seems to be focusing on the problems we’re having in this country, rather than on solutions.

For example, they worry about things like Illegal immigration, rebuilding New Orleans and wild animals attacking humans in Florida. So, let’s see how we can use these three problems to solve these same three problems.

It’s as simple as 1-2-3. The result is a win-win-win situation:

Dig a moat the length of the Mexican border.

Use the dirt to raise the levies in New Orleans.

Put the Florida alligators in the moat.

No problems.”

This method can also be used on nuclear waste. You see, America also has three other problems:

1) The US nuclear arsenal is too small and inadequate to protect America.

2) There are currently 75,000 metric tons of solid nuclear waste in the US and the federal government hasn’t found any way to dispose of it.

3) Demand for nuclear fuel is growing as a result of the Nuclear Renaissance, and so are the costs of uranium ore and nuclear fuel.

Let’s see if we can solve these problems using them:

1) Recycle all of the recycleable nuclear fuel, using the uranium from this spent fuel as nuclear fuel and the plutonium from spent fuel for nuclear weapon production.

2) Dispose of all nonrecycleable nuclear fuel by dumping it in the Marianas Trench, the deepest sea trench in the world.

See? All three problems solved!

Please call the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) DC office today at 1-800-368-5642 or 301-415-700

Please call the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) DC office today at 1-800-368-5642 or 301-415-7000 and tell them what you think of this idea.

Residents Organized for Safe Environment (ROSE) Statement of Concern: ROSE believes that the NRC’s stated alternative to Change the Waste Confidence away from the small step approach to the long-term Waste Confidence program for 200 years to make nuclear power plant sites into nuclear waste dumps for 200 years is shortsighted and completely without regard for the safety of the millions of citizens who populate the areas around these power plants.

This type of decision by the NRC, demands that the public take action to secure its own safety from the hazards of such a nuclear waste dump in their vicinity wherever it is located. It calls into question the very mandate itself of the NRC “Protecting People and the Environment” and leads us to the conclusion that the NRC is no longer capable of Protecting the People and the Environment. This may mean it is time to consider disbanding the NRC and forming a new protective agency led by the citizens themselves who have no vested interest in protecting the nuclear industry.

NRC Draft Report for Comment Dec 2011 Waste storage policy. Background and Preliminary Assumptions For an Environmental Impact Statement.—Long-Term Waste Confidence Update. States 6. Alternatives Under the National Environmental Policy Act

“The proposed action is a change to the Commission.’s current Waste Confidence decision and rule, which requires the Commission to revisit the issue of Waste Confidence every five to ten years. As part of this process, the Commission has revised Waste Confidence twice since 1984, and each time has expanded the temporal scope of its analysis by a few decades. This long-term Waste Confidence update would move away from this small-step approach, and would extend the temporal scope of Waste Confidence by as many as 200 years. The EIS will include an analysis of the impacts of four storage scenarios in order to assess the magnitude and range of impacts and the safety of extended storage. Section 8 of this report discusses these scenarios. As with the current Waste Confidence rule and decision, the Waste Confidence EIS will generically describe the potential impacts of extended storage and will assume that the storage of spent nuclear fuel will continue to be a regulated activity in the future. Unlike the current Waste Confidence rule and decision, this long-term Waste Confidence EIS will not require reconsideration of a possible update to the rule and decision every five to ten years. The no-action alternative is to continue to review the Waste Confidence decision and rule for updates every 5 to 10yrs”

Going green develops much more than just tax benefits. A hidden benefit with going green is the fac

Going green develops much more than just tax benefits. A hidden benefit with going green is the fact that there are many jobs created and it provides a cleaner, healthier environment in the process. Going green is a personal choice, but it is one that businesses and individuals are implementing – and to great success. Even the youngest amongst us can live green and apply those concepts for the future.

What Going Green Is

A green business does many things to go green, including, but not limited to recycling and energy conservation. Even simple means of using organic or natural cleaners puts them one step in the right direction. The fact of removing or reducing pollutants that leak into our atmosphere is important, but the fact that this “movement” has reached all across the world with people of all ages, is an incredible testament to the diligence of people who apply it all over the world to their everyday lives and businesses. Even some businesses are building their companies with green or organic materials, an event that actually saves the business money not in tax incentives, but practically by saving money on energy and water costs.

Green life certainly will yield multiple benefits from breathing easier to living longer lives. A tenet of green life is that we become environmentally conscious of all the decisions that we take part of and as more and more people take notice and act, the better off the environment will be.

What Can We Do

Whether you need a green business or want to start a green life, it is important to be able to know how to apply the concepts that exist today. Building green homes and businesses is one thing but understanding what the products are made of and how these products help with the green initiative is certainly useful and practical.

Our first line of defense is the knowledge but the second is to get involved. Seeing how businesses handle a green initiative is a start, but in order to get started, we must be willing to step out into the limelight and try. As the world continues to experience environmental issues businesses, groups, and individuals have stepped up. As we live in an uncertain world being vigilant will go a long way in shaping up a healthier earth.

Recycling, building with organic materials, maximizing energy to the benefit of the business and individual, driving energy efficient vehicles, and even conserving water and energy are normal, everyday occurrences. But if we do it on a mass scale, the impact will be felt for generations to come and the positive results will be more than satisfying.
