The Legendary Country Western tailor to the stars — Nudie Cohn.

Nudie suits have been worn by just about everyone who is anyone in the world of Country/Rock music. Simply put, he made Country cool with his one-off original creations that bedazzled a long list of diverse celebs– John Wayne, Gene Autry, George Jones, Elvis, Cher, John Lennon, Ronald Reagan, Elton John, Robert Mitchum, Pat Buttram, Tony Curtis, Michael Landon, Glenn Campbell, Hank Snow, Porter Wagoner, Hank Williams Sr., and groups such as, America, Chicago, ZZ top, and the Flying Burrito Bros (Gram Parsons’ “Gilded Palace of Sin” suit is considered the Sistine Chapel of Nudies).  To own a Nudie is to own something special; collected by fashion and music hounds alike– Dwight Yoakam, Ben Harper, Lenny Kravitz, Perry Farrell, Jeff Tweedy, and other A-list Rockers of today keep the Nudie flame burning, and even inspired a few of them to create their own line of signature clothing.

The man behind the amazing rhinestone-studded, hand-embroidered suits was none other than Mr. Nudie Cohn– arguably, the larger-than-life 5-foot-7 Russian Rhinestone Cowboy is the most influential and innovative fashion designer and tailor to ever bless the world of Country music.  And he couldn’t stop at clothing– he put his Midas Touch on everything around him– especially his customized fleet of Nudie-fied GM cruisers that he used to promote his LA based Nudies Rodeo Tailors shop on Lankershim Blvd.  Of the original 18 cars, the whereabouts of only 9 are known today.

Pontiac Bonnevilles were the car of choice, Mr. Cuevas said, partly because they were among the longest cars on the road. “We took the seats out and did the upholstery in hand tooled leather,” he said. “We put guns and bullets and silver dollars all over it.”

Mr. Cuevas recalled that guns were cheap and easy to buy in Los Angeles. The Winchesters, Colts and derringers were sent to be plugged and silver-plated. When returned, the guns were holstered or became gearshifts and door handles. Silver dollars were strategically added.

“I thought it was fantastic,” Mr. Cuevas said. “The more things we had to hang on the car, the better.”

In the early 1960s, for promotional purposes, Cohn began receiving a free Pontiac every year. Typically, he’d drive the cars for a while and then sell them or give them away. While Mr. Cuevas said he recalled a few going out the door at prices up to $35,000, Nudie gave his ‘63 Bonneville (adorned with more than 100 valuable coins, including Morgan silver dollars) to his friend Roy Rogers.

Today, that car is hooked to a Nudie-customized covered-wagon trailer in the Roy Rogers museum in Branson, Mo., not far from Trigger, the world’s most famous stuffed horse. Dave Koch, a museum spokesman, said Rogers drove the car regularly near his Apple Valley, Calif., home, until souvenir hunters began prying off coins.

“It was such a long vehicle with that extended rear bumper, that it was very difficult to drive on hills,” Mr. Koch said. “You had to enter driveways at a major angle.”

Lindsay Lohan – from Disney star to soft porn. Some how she pulls it off.  In this shoot by photographer Yu Tsai for Muse Magazine, we see the see what we could say is the real Miss Lohan. According to herself she agreed to do the shoot as long as she was allowed to keep her “artistic integrity”. I dont know, sound just like another PR trick. But I must say, the pictures are outstanding! Actually I love them!

Early 2006 if I am not mistaken Ben and Nick created Apartment and officially jump started the streetwear scene in Brisbane. They were one of the first to establish a store that catered to streetwear affacionados, and the 4000 got it’s first instore glimpse at many brands, some that were unattainable before they came along and even introduced modern classics such as FEIT.

As streetwear has evovled so did Apartment and true to their taste they are introducing brands and designers to Brisbane that have until now only been seen on blogs and webstores. Apartment is again setting the tone for modern streetwear with brands that represent simplicity, quality and attention to detail. It is admirable that they are bold enough to venture into the new, it is one of ‘the’ stores you must checkout if you’re in the 4000.

With summer and fall behind us, we lucky Vancouverites get to look forward to our seasonal dosage of rain, snow, slush and everything inbetween.  Yes kids, it’s time to put away those summer sneakers and whip out the heavy artillery against mother nature. But not so fast, you skepticals might be thinking: ” Ain’t no way I’m  rockin em ugly ass gumboots na mean!” But oh, ye of little faith, hypedink has got you covered. 1. Red Wing’s:
   In 1905, Charles H. Beckman started the Red Wing Shoe Company in Red Wing, Minnesota. The first boot sold for $1.75. Though the decimal point might have hopped over couple places, Red Wings have been synonymous with basic principles of quality, craftsmanship, durability and comfort. 2. Clarks:
   No list would be complete without these. While brothers James and Cyrus Clark might have started this company in 1825, it is , by no means, outdated.    This refreshingly original marriage between the two produced some of the most hyped footwear this season. With the trend reverting back towards American workwear/footwear, consumers have been looking for timeless staples that will remain in their closet for years to come ( Sorry flourescent colored shoes ) While, they borrowed from the classic silhouettes we have featured above (desert boot) there are many subtleties and details that make them unique in their own respect.  With Canadian retailer Ransom at the helm, you know these will stand up to the harsh Canadian winter. And they’re Adidas, show some love mmkay?

So that about wraps out our first installment for this winter season. I’m personally waiting for a pair of clarks to arrive, while Justin beat me to the punch and has been rocking these to keep his feet warm. Beautiful eh?

My twin mantras are to buy beautiful things and pay cheap prices. One of my favourite resources on the internet is the Buying and Selling thread at www.styleforum.net as it accomplishes both.

This great website has everything from Brioni and Turnbull & Asser, to the more modern offerings of Nudie denim and Red Wing boots.  Check it out here  and see if you can’t get some great deals on things you otherwise couldn’t afford, didn’t know was out there or may not have had access to.

В Киеве на улице Костельной открылся магазин одежды “Физкультура” – для спортивных и умных модников. Он напоминает лавочки в творческих районах Нью-Йорка, вроде Сохо или Гринвич-Виллидж, где посреди десятка пар дизайнерских кроссовок сидит с ноутбуком и чашкой кофе сам хозяин. Ассортимент и площадь “Физкультуры”, конечно, значительно больше, но ощущение камерности и избирательности подхода – то же. Новый магазин выглядит очень гостеприимно: открытое белоснежное пространство со стеклянными витринами в пол, много света – что называется, полная информационная прозрачность.

В “Физкультуру” нужно идти за одеждой casual – красивой и небанальной. Например, марки Fred Perry, которая наконец-то появилась в городе в достойном количестве, со своими замечательными поло, ветровками, брюками и кроссовками, отмеченными вышитым лавровым венком. То есть теперь можно собрать весь классический комплект, точь-в-точь как у лондонских и бирмингемских собратьев, которых еще в начале 2000-х не пускали в британские бары, безошибочно опознавая по лавровому венку потенциальных troublemakers. Для женщин привезли первую линию марки Laurel – помимо поло, есть клетчатые хлопковые тенниски, теннисные платья и тонкий трикотаж на пуговицах. Для мужчин приготовили коллекцию Fred Perry by Raf Simons. Перед нами вторая коллекция, разработанная бельгийцем для этой марки. На этот раз в ее основе – цветовые блоки, инспирированные культурой Западной Африки: ярко-синий цвет в сочетании с оранжевым, черным и коричневым. Главная вещь коллекции – полосатая рубашка-поло.

Джинсовые марки тут те, что считаются правильными, причем не в джетсеттерских кругах, а у интеллектуалов. Мужские и женские японские джинсы Evisu с цветной галочкой на заднем кармане и шведские Nudie – это все raw denim, необработанный. Джинсы полагается покупать на размер-два меньше и жить в них несколько месяцев, преодолевая сопротивление материала. Усилия вознаграждаются удивительной гармонией штанов с их обладателем: они садятся точно по фигуре и естественным образом выцветают.
Еще в “Физкультуру” привезли женскую коллекцию JC de Castelbajac. Имя Жан-Шарля де Кастельбажака сейчас не то чтобы на слуху, но когда-то аббревиатура JC/DC звучала действительно громко – пик его славы пришелся на 70-е. Есть и популярная английская марка уличной одежды Hari с расслабленными спортивными костюмами, куртками, майками и худи, а также итальянская C.P. Company с повседневной и якобы рассчитанной на экстремальный отдых одеждой. Здесь же мужские футболки французов Sixpack с принтами уличных художников и граффитчиков и женские – от британцев Environmental Justice Foundation с дизайнерскими принтами от Luella, Giles, John Rocha и Zandra Rhodes.

В секции женской обуви – несколько пар кед Fred Perry и около двух десятков всемирно известных балеток Repetto. Для мужчин – цветные монохромные кроссовки, кожаные вьетнамки Costume National active, цветные высокие кроссовки на липучках Gaetano Navarra и резиновые шлепанцы Neil Barret.
Хороший выбор солнцезащитных очков Linda Farrow, замечательные итальянские спортивные сумки Zanellato и спортинвентарь этой же марки: гантели, боксерские перчатки, мячи для гандбола и волейбола.

I am happy because it can be customized to fit the needs of different clients(check out the version we did for Orange Optika). I still am a bit disappointed in the youtube quality.

We used a vintage stag film from the 1950’s which we digitalized and then had some expert animators do the spinning of the frames and the  “sewing” of footage into the temple. It was apparently quite the ordeal…

Manuel was born, Manuel Arturo José Cuevas Martinez, on April 23rd, 1938 in Michoacán, Mexico, and was the fifth of eleven children of Esperanza and José Guadalupe Cuevas. 
Manuel’s was taught to sew at the age of seven, by his older brother and tailor, Adolfo. He has made his own clothes ever since. During this time Manuel mastered a wide scope of the clothier’s art, including leather working, hat making, silver working and boot making.
Manuel then attended the University of Guadalajara majoring in psychology before leaving his native Mexico for Los Angeles in the mid 1950s.

In Los Angeles, Manuel he took on several low wage jobs and eventually landed a job with master embroiderer, Viola Grae. Manuel was working for Viola Grae when he met Nudie and Manuel joined Nudie as his head tailor at Nudie’s Rodeo Tailors in the early 1960’s.
Manuel worked along side Nudie for fourteen years. While at Nudie’s shop, he quickly became head designer and primary creator for many of Nudie’s clientele, he also became Nude’s son-in-law when he married Nudie’s daughter Barbara.

After Manuel and Barbara divorced, Manuel left Nudie’s employ and opened up his own business in North Hollywood in the mid-1970’s. 
Soon after opening his shop, Manuel purchased a dozen or so machines from the infamous designer, Nathan Turk. Turk had just closed up his business, Turk of Hollywood, due to health reasons. In a generous gesture, Turk never cashed Manuel’s check for those machines. Manuel has always admired Nathan Turk and has given credit to Turk for some of his inspirations. Manuel, himself has also been known to be generous in giving a few of his creations away to some of the newer up-coming country musicians who otherwise would do without.

Manuel had found an unlimited outlet for his creativity working alongside great designers such as Viola Grae, master embroiderer, Nudie Cohn, the famous cowboy clothier, and Sy Devore, Hollywood Tailor to the Stars.
He found inspirations from such great clothiers as Rodeo Ben, Nathan Turk, and Nudie Kohn, all of which were immigrants to the USA, as he himself was, and all found fame in the world as clothiers as he had.

In the late 1980’s, Manuel moved to Nashville, Tennessee nearer to where many of his clientele, most of which were in the Country Music Industry, and opened his business, Manuel’s Exclusive Clothier’s.

His creations are truly a work of art and can be found in museums nationwide, including Metropolitan, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame and even the Smithsonian. Locally, in Nashville, you can find his works on display at the Country Music Hall of Fame and if you’re just lucky enough to know Manuel’s close friend, Marty Stuart, his closet is rumored to hold over 3000 pieces of Country Cowboy Couture that includes masterpieces from Turk, Nudie and, of course, Manuel.

Today, Manuel continues to craft western couture garments at his shop, Manuel’s Exclusive Clothier located at 1922 Broadway, Nashville, Tn. 37205, 615-321-5444. Most of Manuel’s custom-made outfits, all of which are sold as custom-made with Manuel’s direct involvement, will normally sell from $5,000 to $7,500, yet some can cost $20,000 or more. A buyer can also opt to buy from Manuel’s’ ready to wear line, Manuel Limited Collection is offered a lower cost across the country at only the finest of Western Wear Stores.

Manuel is an artist in the truest sense of the word, so make sure to stop by his shop and visit this Nashville Treasure on your next visit to Music City USA. You will recognize him by his big smile, signature scarf, charming and personable nature… he will also be the one charming all of the women within site.

Sorry about the lack of updates! I’ve been kind of busy lately. I met my brother for coffee yesterday afternoon and he attempted to help me fix the problem with my Photoshop. Unfortunately we weren’t able to fix it yesterday but my brother is a wiz with computers so I’m confident it’ll be back in business soon!

This evening my sister and I went to the Grolsch Block Party. Nudie had a party with People magazine which was fun, and totally packed with people! We also stopped by Roxy where Hernandéz Cornet was having an exhibition.

I’m calling it an early night because tomorrow afternoon I’m doing a part in a short tv-commerical type thing. It’s hard to explain. Hopefully it’ll be fun though. I might go and get a new camera after that, I’m still debating whether I want to get a new camera now or if I should wait.

I’ll try to post some pictures from the past couple of days (including this evening) some time tomorrow!

Here are a few pictures of a Damiano frame that is decorated with what we assume to be a 1950 stag film. The film material itself was quite brittle and broke a few time during the digitalizing process.

The combination of Flying Burrito inspired use of  Nudie suits, two sets of keys, and a Benmont Tench ivory-based riff – and that subtle harmony – Now this is a well crafted, beautifully arranged  pop rock  tune.  My friends have been ‘jamming me’ for years about this group.  Wilco’s  obvious  respect for those who came before them, and them, and before them too,  demonstrates class.  Now that’s something truly special.

Something that I have been talking about over and over again to people that actually listen to what I say over and over again are nudies. Nudie Jeans. It all started when I was an innocent boy in college and I met an evil friend called Consumerism and Consumerism introduced me to Materialism. It all went downhill from there. A lot of people started wearing Nudies several years back – they are a Swedish brand but have appealed to many people including celebs. These email blasts on facebook would always advertise to me about them. Then a friend simply known as P. talked about them again when we were in a local store here in Vancity. And ok, I’ll stop.

Alright, so having all that said: the simple concept behind Nudie is that they mold to your skin. They stress the fact that it is a part of you, your second nature, blah blah, so that everything you “do” in them will become a part of your life…..(yeaaaaaa), so the creases that you make while driving, or the stuff you put in your pockets WILL SHOW UP more and more as you wear the jeans. THIS IS because Nudie uses dry jeans. A very tough raw kind of denim. After you wear them for 6 months, you can wash them and you will see the difference (the site calls them more beautiful and beautiful…freaking weird…).

So if you are lookin to cop a pair of new denims, look Nudie Jeans up – they aren’t the MOST expensive in the world and I think it is an awesome concept. You heard it right here. I’m going RIGHT NOW.

Mitt i tiden av lågkonjunktur verkar det som om våra västsvenska konfektionsföretag går bra. Träffade Göran Bille på Lindex idag och fick information om att de har en god utveckling. Två av tre affärsområden såg de ingen som helst nedgång inom. Tvärtom ser man på en intressant expansion den närmaste tiden. Nya butiker i Saudi, Ryssland och Slovakien. Det är flera västsvenska företag som planerar utökning av antalet butiker.  Det visar att den svenska modellen håller, vad avser design och kvalitet. Ytterligare en framgång är en god logistik, ett område som vi kan. Inom branschen är det viktigt med korta ledtider, rätt tajming samt en proffisionell marknadsföring.

Lycka till Kapp-Ahl, Lindex, Gina Tricot, JC, Eton, Oscar Jacobsson, Nudie och alla ni andra. Handel är ett viktigt område för det västsvenska näringslivet. Något som handelskammaren kommer att stödja i framtiden.

I love denim.  I appreciate the process of creating great denim and I love the process of wearing great denim.  As I have mentioned before, I have a love affair with Sweden’s Nudie Jeans Co.

I recently washed my one year old Slim Jim Dry Broken Twills for the first time.  Above is a picture of the an unworn pair, and below is a picture of the results of one year’s worth of wear and one wash.  I think there is a pretty remarkable difference and am really happy with the results!
