…And 3D Realms is all out of gum.

While it is disheartening to hear the fizzle-pop of a dying developer, especially one that is handling a hallmark of the gaming industry like Duke motha-fuckin Nukem, I can’t say that I’m really all that shocked. They have just never been that solid of a developer. The only game that they have fully developed in house that has been successful has only ever been Duke Nukem 3D. Now, Prey and Max Payne were fun games, but both of those games were developed outside of 3D realms (Human Head Studios and Remedy Entertainment respectfully). Maybe 3D Realms should have passed the torch to somebody else before it became too late. Then we would at least have something to play, homie. I mean, 13 years in development is ridiculous. Just think of all the games that have come out since then. It didn’t take us 13 years to send some one to the moon. Even if the game did come out, how good could it possibly be? It would have to be the Holy Grail of game play, with some sort of perpetual motion graphics engine that would never again need to be upgraded; literally the last game you EVER need to buy, in order to justify 13 years.

Now with that said, some people speculate that this might be a clever public-relations stunt by 3D Realms or Take Two to drum up publicity. It would be great timing for one of the coolest reveals at E3 2009. I am keeping my fingers crossed. I don’t want to jinks it by saying it’s unlikely, and hoping that the “rules of jinks” doesn’t apply to print media, but the chances seem slim. And to anybody that would be unsettled enough, if this were a PR stunt, to not at least check-out Duke Nukem Forever I say the following, “Stop being a self-righteous, fart-sniffing sissy and grow a pair. It’s not going to be the last time you’re going to be lied too.” I hope the game does come out sometime before I die.

…Bioshock 2 is on its last stick of gum as well.

I’ve heard that Bioshock 2 will have multiplayer. No co-op, just competitive arena type games, i.e. death match, capture the flag, etc. I don’t know how I feel about this, it seems ill conceived. I’ve heard it described as having a call of duty 4 leveling system except with plasmids, and unlike other games that have there multiplayer as an autonomous part of the game, away from the single-player, Bioshock 2 will somehow weave it into its story arc. In other words, the multiplayer will be set prior to the first Bioshock during the actual collapse of Rapture. I think that it is a strange choice for 2K Games to make. The game never left me feeling that it needed a multiplayer, and how exactly do you implement something like a story driven multiplayer.

Actually it never left me feeling that there needed to be a Bioshock 2. The story of Rapture seemed blissfully well done and above all complete. I think that the true essence of Bioshock is less FPS and more Adventure, and when you start adding things in like multiplayer, the adventure aspect gets lost in translation. Would it have not been a more wise decision for 2K games to create a new intellectual property that would lend itself better to a multiplayer type game? Time will tell. I can only hope that the title will not be damaged due to its sudden desire to please the masses.

It’s official, Duke Nukem Forever is dead. For those not in the loop, last Wednesday the gamin

It’s official, Duke Nukem Forever is dead.

For those not in the loop, last Wednesday the gaming world was informed that long running development house 3D Realms would be shutting down and after 12 years and 9 days so would development on the longest running joke in the games industry.

Can we say we’re surprised? Hardly. I don’t think anyone ever expected DNF to ever see the light of day, at least not during our lifetime. Even if it was released there’s no way it could live up to the expectations that it had built up over it’s gigantic development time, the new innovations it had promised in 1997 are old hat by today’s standards. Vehicular combat, enemy swarms, physics based game play would have been hailed as the bleeding edge of gaming had it been released in a manner more timely. The Dukester would have gone down in the annals of gaming history, 3D Realms would have dug themselves out of their financial pit and the sky would rain down Skittles.

Let’s face it though, this isn’t exactly a the first time a long development period has almost killed a 3D Realms title. Diligent followers of their gaming history will no doubt remember the Prey saga. A game that was in development hell for a period of eleven years, a game that also promised the very latest in gaming technology to deliver unique player experiences, a game that swapped lead designers, then whole development teams, brought on a single coder to work on the engine for a year, was shelved for almost 2 years, a game that was eventually outsourced and completed in a fraction of the time by another company. Finally released in 2006, it was a success for Humanhead Studios and is remembered as one of the standout early titles for the Xbox 360, an interesting storyline and great puzzles that bent time and space made for a fantastic game with a sequel on the way.

So what can we glean from all this? There are still rumors flying around the gaming press and hearsay from their forums telling of the woeful organization, lack of development timetables and milestones and countless “should have, could have, didn’t” stories about Scott Miller and George Broussard’s handling of the situation, but until there’s an official announcement we’re left to merely speculate as to what went on inside the offices at 3D Realms. There’s a bunch of people without jobs who have to read the jibes and taunts of outsiders and their industry fellows, while they try to find work. And a community of people, us gamers, many of whom were around when DNF was first announced, before our beloved pastime became mainstream, us who chuckled each time someone mentioned Duke’s name or at the mere thought of the title being released are still waiting for something to come of this all. There are still those who remain hopeful that Duke will have one last hurrah saving the world from evil space monsters and mutant pigs, some even hoping that the indie community can get the build an maybe finish a game that is worthy of being called Duke Nukem Forever and perhaps it will. But maybe it shouldn’t, this thing that has become one of the best and most loved phantom of gamers around the world carries too much with it to ever be completed, maybe we gamers should be happy with the few clips and the handful of screen shots, the laughs and the memories of countless drunken debates and close the lid on Duke’s coffin.

R.I.P Duke Nukem, we hardly knew ye.

But apparently the Duke is going to outlive 3D Realms in some way. I just got a statement from Apogee and Deep Silver that says those companies are not affected by the “situation at 3D Realms.” It says that development on the Duke Nukem Trilogy is continuing as planned. That’s is a small game, announced last year, planned for the Nintendo DS and the PlayStation Portable.

That is, it’s not a major effort of the same scale as Duke Nukem Forever, which looks like it may be toast for now. Confused yet? It remains to be seen what’s really going on here. Scott Miller and George Broussard founded 3D Realms (then-named Apogee Software) in 1987 and was best known for its Duke Nukem series. The studio had – incredibly – been working on Duke Nukem Forever for 13 years. A teaser for the game was released in 2007.

While 3D Realms has made games other than Duke Nukem (such as the first-person shooter “Prey

While 3D Realms has made games other than Duke Nukem (such as the first-person shooter “Prey”) and while they were once the recently resurrected Apogee (“Commander Keen”! “Rise of the Traid”!), they are definitely most known for having been developing “Duke Nukem Forever” for, oh, about 13 years now.

However, the Texas-based developer may have shut down its doors, if recent reports are to be believed.

This comes on the heels of 3D Realms co-founder swearing up and down that “Duke Nukem Forever” was getting ever nearer to release (take that as you will).

Publisher Take-Two, who has the rights to publish the game should it ever be released, issued a statement not long ago:

“It is the Company’s policy to not comment on its contractual relationships, nor do we comment on rumors and speculation. That said, we can confirm that our relationship with 3D Realms for Duke Nukem Forever was a publishing arrangement, which did not include ongoing funds for development of the title. In addition, Take-Two continues to retain the publishing rights to Duke Nukem Forever.” - Alan Lewis, Vice President of Corporate Communications & Public Affairs for Take-Two.

So if 3D Realms is indeed all out of bubblegum, one has to wonder if Duke Nukem will find a new home, in which case Take-Two will apparently still publish the title.

Apogee also issued a statement saying that they were unaffected by “the issue at 3D Realms,” and they will continue developing “Duke Nukem Trilogy” for the DS and PSP, of which not much is known.

Epic announced that GOW 2 has achieved an amazing 5 million sales worldwide, meaning that the entire Gears of war franchise has now achieved over 11million sales. To celebrate this momentous achievement Epic announced some extra game content for their successful franchise.

As well as this Epic announced that they will be releasing a special edition of the game that will include all downloadable content to date. This special edition game is being called “All fronts collection” I don’t know why but it is. Included in this special edition game is a game add on called “dark corners”, which will also be available on Xbox marketplace for 1600 MS points, this add on will include seven new multiplayer maps and an added campaign chapter. The chapter is called “Road to Ruin” apparently Epic are big on labeling things, this new chapter was deleted from GOW 2 before release but now Epic are looking to celebrate their throwing it in there. I’ll bet the chance to make money without extra work never even entered their minds.

The Ghostbusters game, a game already appearing in hundreds of news articles with praises and bad news alike has been buzzing for ages. A short while ago I wrote an update mentioning how Atari had announced the game was set for release. Well that’s still going to happen but now the game developers Atari have agreed a deal with Sony, to allow them to help develop and release the game on 19th of June.

However this means that for now Ghostbusters is a PS3 exclusive game. Atari have maintained the right to publish the game to other consoles at a later date but whether or not they will is yet to be seen. For now Xbox owners will just have to keep dreaming about Ghost busting is actually like, as well as thinking up new names for their proton packs …mine was going to be Sheila.

Wolverine: origins has stunned gamers and actually broken the curse of the movie release game, not only that but it beat of the rest of it’s competition and claimed second place in the game chart. It came second to wii fit, which makes sense as everyone wants to get fit but not leave there house you can’t fault Nintendo’s genius there.

The game has even been referred to by one fan boy as “the first movie license game to be better than the movie.” it seems that no matter what you do with a character like Wolverine it’s set for gold.

Capcom have announced that although they are releasing marvel vs.. Capcom 2 on Xbla they have no intentions to release a 3rd. Capcom have said one of the major reasons is trying to negotiate the license as the Marvel title and it’s associated parties has been put about recently.

By releasing the old Xbox game on arcade they hope to ignite gamers excitement for the game and maybe gain some momentum for a possible 3rd. As it stands right now however there doesn’t seem to be any plans for a 3rd, the fate of the game does truly rest in the hands of its gamers.

Capcom have announced however they were thinking about releasing the game with an themed joystick due to the success of the Madcatz street fighter IV sticks, so at least something will come of this.

A game legend was feared dead today as the developer of Duke Nukem Forever, 3D Realms, was shut down. The reason being funds, a common problem especially in today’s financial climate, which leaves Duke without a developer.

3D had been in cahoots with Take-Two but they have said this was purely a publishing arrangement and so they were unable to help fund the project. Duke Nukem Forever was supposedly far enough along development to release game play footage and Take-Two have said they retain the publishing rights. The real question is will Duke Nukem be made or will it fall into oblivion like so many other games.

Ok so, it’s been mentioned before and I’m not one for bandwagons; especially as they ten

Ok so, it’s been mentioned before and I’m not one for bandwagons; especially as they tend to be gripped on to by thoughtless individuals trying to be “kool.”

However, it is undeniable that alot of modern games, particularly first person shooters, have a very muted colour palette consisting of *mostly* greys and browns. To be honest it never really bothered me, if I enjoyed a game, then I enjoyed it and the art style was part of the package. But I came across a great article comparing the enemies from Doom 2 to those in Doom 3.

“OH BUT!” I hear you cry, “Doom 2’s enemies are old, pixlated, cartoony and silly!” “I liked the way Doom 3 looked!” I can also hear you saying to yourself that “he just wants to be like Yahtzee.” -To which I roll mine eyes.

Now they’re both relatively old games themselves, but I think that helps with the point I’m trying to make. Obviously the design team went through their process which appears to have been to “update” and make the designs and graphics “realistic.” Which is fine. But dont you think the Doom 3 monsters seem alot more bland, generic and less eye-catching? Personally I dont see why the Doom 2 enemies can’t look as awesome as a fat, burley biker’s tattoo, in 3d without needing to go all “realistic” and plain. These creatures are Hell-Spawn after all, and I don’t know about you, but the Doom 2 enemies give me the creeps much more than the Doom 3 versions.

Don’t get me wrong, I can understand the decisions the Doom 3 team made, and they’re stuff is pretty intresting on its own, but with graphical power always improving and some games taking advantage, (Mirrors Edge, PoP… TF2 etc) why is it that alot of games just throw grit on the screen and call it done?

A very good example is one of the Duke Nukem Forever screenshots,” it IS kind of pretty, has some nice details and elaborates the on the design to make it more intense, but it is a load of brown and gray at the end of the day.

The other side of the coin is that, the more “GMG&DSB” coloured games we get, the more appreciative we are when something visually succulent comes along.

Well everything can’t be original or wacky or spicy or it becomes just as bland and generic as everything else. -It’ll all blend into each other. I’m not trying to say every game should be or even try to be a; gay-pride parade of colour and zainy-ness. Admittedly alot of the “GMG&DSB” fits with the type of stroy and setting, but that shouldn’t be an excuse for not trying anything.

Although as most of us don’t actually design games, only consume them it seems a bit unfair and redundant to get worked up about any of this, and that’s not what I want.

I dont really see it as a problem at all but it was just on my mind since I’ve been playing the original Dooms again lately.
